Hello Spelemann, and welcome to Wikipedia!

"If an article is in a category of "Natives of county Meath", or other counties, I wouldn't feel it needs categorizing with "Irish people" as well. Since "Irish people by counties" is a sub category of "Irish Poeple". I removed your last category edit on Turlough O'Carolan. I would use "Irish people" only if I didn't know their native county. Please tell me if you disagree. Spelemann 15:48, 10 February 2007 (UTC)"

I can see and understand your point. My motive in my edits were three-fold; first, to increase the link-scope of such articles, thereby making them available to a wider audience on Wiki. Secondly, Natives of County Meath, Dublin, Antrim, etc, may not make people any the wiser if they are not familiar with Ireland. Third, and last, most of those so edited are people listed in the "Notable Irish people (selection)"; this section is one I wish to restore to the overall article "Irish people", as it gives a very good broad overview of Irish people, while at the same time introducing them to others.

I'm not disagreeing with you; matter of fact your suggestions have given me some pause. Tell you what, I'll cease making such edits untill we get it resolved at the Irish message board. Will you put it up and ask for adjucation? Cheers! Fergananim 10:29, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you that it doesn't make poeple that are not familiar with the Irish geography, any wiser. But what if we made a description on each of the "Natives of County X" so that the readers know that the county is a part of Ireland? I have the impression that the categories is a way to give the reader articles about the same topic, so not primarily to inform the reader (I refer to the first guideline in Wikipedia:Categorization).

This dilemma actually exists in other kinds of articles as well. Take the example of the album Tears of Stone (album); this is categorized by Category:The Chieftains albums, not by Category:Irish folk albums since this is its super category. Perhaps this could give some hints: Wikipedia:Categorization_and_subcategories? I haven't talked to anyone about this before, so it's good for me to get a second opinion from you. And ...

[edit]

Let me know what you think of this 1347 in Ireland; am I going into too much depth, wandering too much from other Year's in style? Fergananim 17:26, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This looks very good too me. You do a good job! Spelemann 00:48, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just after finishing extensive revising of the above article. I aim to keep on at it over the coming weeks and submit it for peer review. Would very much appreciate your thoughts. Fergananim 20:03, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No article on Mac Fhirbhisigh would be complete without one on Nollaig. We're not short on good historians here in Ireland, but for my money Nollaig is head and shoulders above many. Besides citing a few more of his works, and maybe adding a photo, this article is nearly complete. Fergananim 23:45, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Removal of "drum and bugle corps" category from instructor pages

[edit]

Hi. I'm the gentleman in charge of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Drum Corps, and I was curious as to why you removed the "drum and bugle corps" category from the pages of Fred Sanford, Tom Float, Ralph Hardimon, and Marty Hurley. These individuals are well known for their involvement within the drum and bugle corps activity (and it says so, I think, on each of their pages. I won't be adding back the category yet; I'd like to hear what your reason is. Maybe they shouldn't be in the category after all. Thanks! Mr Bound 16:29, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I've been going through many of the articles marked with Category:Musicians, since they should be categorised further into its subcategories. I might have been wrong with removing the category "Drum and bugle corps", but I thought this was a category for a group of people, not a person. An analogy is the categories musical groups and musicians, where musical groups are a group of people, and musicians are for single persons. I might be wrong in your situation, but if you disagree I'm willing to go along with your viewpoint. Another category I removed are Category:Rudimental Percussion, do you disagree with this as well? For me it is not logic to put a musician in a category of instruments. Thanks for giving me a chance to explain. Spelemann 09:20, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Scots, Attacotti and Deisi

[edit]

Hi! I would like your opinion on the above short addition I made to Prehistoric settlement of Great Britain and Ireland. Cheers. Fergananim 14:31, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I put up a new article. Hopefully it's better than the last. I'd like you to check it out and let me know. Thanks Martonic17 19:45, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hej, Spelemann!

I changed the article a little; inter alia I removed the reference to Hardanger. The song is rather spread, in several languages; e.g., Sveriges Medeltida Ballader lists 189 variants in Swedish. I hope you don't mind, and keep up your good work! (Om du har lust, så kan du gärna kika litet på besläktade norska sidor, till exempel no:TSB katalogen och no:Kategori:Norske folkeviser.)
