Lord Palmerston's letters

[edit]

I remember your comment on the Talk:First Opium War page about Lord Palmerston's letters to the Chinese Emperor and the Elliots. Are these [[1]] [[2]] the correct ones? Also, I have broken down and purchased a physical book concerning the First Opium War, and hope that I can begin major improvements on the information flow in the article. Cheers. RM close on Asgardia (nation)

[edit]

I think you may have accidentally miscounted here, including me there were six editors favoring Asgardia (micronation), and only three favoring Asgardia. The subject hardly came up, but my second choice would have been Space Kingdom of Asgardia.--Pharos (talk) 23:13, 12 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There's clear agreement to remove (nation) as incorrect. But I didn't think it would be an issue at all (even amongst most of those six editors) to move it to "Asgardia" as there's no other article with that title, of which this is clearly the primary topic. There' only one or two other topics this may get confused with, in which case a hatnote seems more appropriate than a dab page. Do you still support a DAB page? I'll be happy to either revert myself and let the discussion run longer or put it up to move review. Spellcast (talk) 00:12, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Author & Dating Coach Alan Roger Currie

[edit]

Spellcast, I read your comment suggesting that no Wiki bios should begin with phrases such as "an award-winning [insert career title here]", but before initially doing so with Alan Roger Currie's page, I researched a few pages to see if that was appropriate. A few:

So my question becomes, if these biographical Wiki pages above begin with "an award-winning [insert career title here]", why can't Alan Roger Currie's page begin in the same manner? Thank you Chicago Smooth (talk) 04:22, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image should be deleted?

[edit]

Hi Spellcast. I see that you deleted this image. Elsewhere there is this image that says its source is "en:Image:Day239picklebarrelc.JPG", i.e., the source is the deleted image. So should this derived image not be deleted too for the same reason? My personal issue with it as that it does not offer any useful information in terms of identifying it as being part of this or that cuisine. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Here, the image comes from the book naming Cassell's Illustrated History of England[4], publishing in 1896. I tried to search the book to find the image. But I can't find that due to my English skill. The page description is wrote like the affair of the arrow.
Could you find a clear resolution now? We have known the illustrator, the original year may be in 1896. One step will be done. --俠刀行 (talk) 04:44, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Infinite IP blocks?

[edit]

Hi. Noticed that you have some old infinite IP blocks. Do you think that they are still relevant and current?  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:01, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Billinghurst: Yep. I just checked and they're all still valid. All 24 blocks are still either webhosts or anonymisers. Half of them are even blocked globally. Spellcast (talk) 04:11, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I poorly worded my approach. Do we still need these blocks to be infinite blocks all these years later, rather than long-term definite blocks, especially if there are global blocks that cover the IP ranges. Thanks for the answer and thanks for looking. — billinghurst sDrewth 04:28, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Billinghurst: For indefinite rangeblocks of open proxies, periodically reviewing them, say, once every year or few years is just as acceptable of an approach as blocking them long-term. 5-year blocks may sound long but they're not compared to the lifespan of these webhosts. Spellcast (talk) 04:46, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information icon Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

[edit]

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Kyle Mcmahon

[edit]

Greetings, Just getting this info regarding the subject page Kyle Mcmahon, as I was offline for a bit due to a death in the family. Am seeing I was told to contact you regarding undeleting this piece. Subject meets two notability requirements both in television and in radio / podcasts, being in most major markets for I Heart Radio and the podcast having long form interviews with guests that all meet our notability requirements. The other notability would fall under television where subject was the focus of a series of episodes with Oprah, one of which won an Emmy.

This page was created in conjunction with numerous editors and admins from The Teahouse and then went on to be edited and added to by numerous users, editors and admins.

Your work is appreciated

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
