Re Talk:Flux (disambiguation), it would be much better if the article's lede was just improved and we could use the lede. I tend to mainly edit dabs and computing at the moment. It's not clear to me what you're referring to about an intensive property, or from your wording, intensive viewpoint? Widefox; talk 11:33, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

@Widefox: sorry to take so long to come back to you, I've been having computer problems and need to catch up.
  • The flux intensive property is the vector representation. The reason for this is very simple: the vector represents the value of the flux at a single point. This is the very definition of an intensive property.
  • You stated on the talk page that "The second definition is a surface integral". That's not quite correct. The relationship between the vector representation and the scalar representation is that the scalar quantity is a surface integral over the vector field. This integral yields the total flux through a surface, not just at a single point. Since this represents the flux of the whole system/material, it is an extensive property.
  • The author of the article clearly starts off from the vector definition and then derives the scalar quantity from it. In my field (electrical engineering) we start off the other way round. We define electric flux as proportional (in SI units, equal) to the electric charge enclosed by a surface. From this we derive a vector quantity of flux per unit area crossing the surface. We call this quantity flux density rather than just flux.
  • You raised the question of the statement in Principles of Medicinal Chemistry that we can only talk about fluxes of extensive properties, the flux of an intensive property would be meaningless... This does not mean that flux itself has to be an extensive property. The authors say flux of an extensive property. The definition they give for flux is, in fact, an intensive property. All they are saying is that one can, for instance, talk about a flow of mass (extensive), but one can't sensibly talk about a flow of density (intensive). I put a lot of work into improving it for the deleted version I found, and would like to continue developing it some more, as it was my first article and the guy seems to be notable.   • You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device that has logged into your account before, you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can also set in your preferences to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address, which may be encouraged for admins and accounts with sensitive permissions.
  • Syntax highlighting is now available as a beta feature (more info). This may assist administrators and template editors when dealing with intricate syntax of high-risk templates and system messages.
  • In your notification preferences, you can now block specific users from pinging you. This functionality will soon be available for Special:EmailUser as well.

  • Applications for CheckUser and Oversight are being accepted by the Arbitration Committee until September 12. Community discussion of the candidates will begin on September 18.

Kedar Joshi

Reorg Ripple(electrical)?

You seem to be one of the guru's in this area, so I ask your opinion first. I propose to reorg this article, which involves the Ripple (filters) and Ripple current redirect pages. There's also a Ripple (electronics) page that redirects here that might need to be considered. This article is a union of two different topics with unavoidably the same name. Most of the info under time domain ripple voltage is covered (or will be covered when I'm done) under Rectifier#rectifier smoothing filter. It should be in one place or the other but not both. As discussed in the article, (time domain)ripple is uniquely associated with rectification. DC generator ripple can/should be discussed in the article (if any) about DC generators, since it is of a different form and has different implications. I propose the following:

Ripple current can be caused by non-linear devices other than rectifiers (transformer actuated triac circuits in Carver power amplifiers comes to mind), and I don't know where in the encyclopedia such info might be, but when it appears, the last link above can redirect there.

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Planar transmission line

I've been going through GAN and trying to do reviews of some of the oldest nominations, which includes planar transmission line. I took a look at the article, and would be willing to review it, but wanted to check with you first as I don't have the technical background to be of much use with the content. I'm fairly scientifically literate, and I'd do some reading to see how much I could understand of the material, but I would understand if you'd prefer the article be reviewed by a someone with more relevant knowledge. Frankly, I think it is advantageous to have a non-technical reviewer. It's too easy to talk jargon to a reviewer who understands the jargon. Doesn't make for the best encyclopaedia articles. Editing the bipolar transistor page

I'm sorry I do not know how to do all of this. It is my first time in here and there is a LOT of stuff about how to do all of this. I just cannot wade throught it all.

But to my original point, I disagree with the use of "convention current" to explain how transistors work. I have been using negative flow all my life, since the CK722 came out. I never did like the idea of positive current. The figure in the bipolar junction article is OK except that the arrows on the wires should be reversed. The drawings inside the crystal are fine. I believe the entire article would be easier to understand if "conventional current" was not mentioned.

@Lloydr: First of all, it was not me that reverted your edit. What we write in Wikipedia is based on what is found in reliable sources. I believe that textbooks commonly use conventional current flow. If you want to do something different you will need to back that up by citing the sources you are using. You would also be well advised to discuss it on the article talk page first as the convention used in that article has been established for a long time. Your personal preferences don't come into it; everything has to trace back to reliable sources. SpinningSpark 18:29, 13 February 2018 (UTC)


OK. I think I am replying to Spinningspark. There is way too much info about how to navigate all these talk pages.

Of course I have seen the continual emphasis on citing sources. My source about disregarding "conventional current" would be some old history about how dear old Ben Franklin made a mistake. That's no reason we have to follow, now that we know electrons have negative charge. This is not scientific protocol. It's common sense. And that's what makes Wiki articles understandable.

@Lloydr: You will need to do more than cite that "Franklin made a mistake". You will need to show that the modern view of scholars in electrical science is that a different convention should be used to conventional current. I don't think you will be able to do that. The vast majority of formal writing uses conventional current and that isn't likely to change. Neutral point of view (NPOV) is a core policy on Wikipedia. Part of that is accurately representing the views of reliable sources without undue weight. Wikipedia is not the place to right great wrongs. If you cannot sign up to all of that then Wikipedia is not the place for you to do your writing. Sorry, but that's how it is here.
Besides that, when it comes to a device like the bpjt with current carrying both positive and negative charges, it is impossible to choose a convention where one carrier or the other is not flowing against the convention. I think choosing the positive direction of current as the direction of flow of positive charges makes sense and is consistent. Consistency would require the sign of charge on the electron to change if the sign of conventional current were changed. Even less likely that that is ever going to happen.   • The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
  • A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
  • A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

  • CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
  • The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.

Navigation pages?

Keep in mind that all articles on Wikipedia are navigation pages. All it takes is one link to turn a page into a navigation page. If you click on that link, you've navigated to another page.

Wikipedia is a hypertext publication. So absolutely YES it should include navigation pages, and every one of its pages should be (and is) a navigation page (that is, include links).

At the same time, there are no purely navigation pages in the encyclopedia. They all contain other information besides links. Even the links themselves convey non-link information (in addition to being links, they are also topics - so links on Wikipedia almost always convey topical information. In addition to this, all articles, including lists, convey inclusion and relationship information, and may also include further descriptive information.

Inclusion information tells us what topics belong to the current subject. Just being presented on the page (as a heading, a list item, or as the subject of a paragraph) can tell us that, or it can be covered more explicitly as prose (e.g., "cardiology is a branch of medicine"). Being included in the List of cats indicates that you are a cat.

Relationship information shows how things within the subject are related to the subject and/or to each other. This type of information can be presented explicitly (e.g., "John and Joe are brothers"). Or it can be implicit in the structure of the article. Subheadings, indented list items, and so on, convey such information, like in a family tree. If a topic has its own heading, that shows one of its relationships to the subject is that it is a subtopic of it. That's a parent-offspring relationship.

Further descriptive information is presented as prose, either in paragraph format (in regular articles) or as annotations (in outlines). For example, "Apples are not always red."

All articles, whether in prose or list format are both informational and navigational.

Hey, if you've got it then take it and run. I got turned around and thought it was 500crore club which was deleted earlier today.   • Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
  • Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
  • The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.

@Judith Sunris: Yes, when you provide sources in response to a "citation needed" or "unsourced" template, you should remove the template at the same time. However, the sources you have provided might not be considered reliable and might attract a new tag saying that. See WP:RS for details. SpinningSpark 15:15, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

On 26 July 2017, you deleted Tim Jonze under G4. I have no idea what was the last version, but G4 wasn't applicable for deletion since it went through Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tim Jonze (2nd nomination), where you had supported redirect,[1] and the AfD resulted in "no consensus". So I did. I must have entirely missed that there had been a second AfD, the prod notice only linked to the first one. I was only servicing the proposed deletions needing attention category at the time, and this one needed attention because it was a prod on an article previously at AFD. Embarassing, that I actually took part in the second AFD. So, whatever the rights and wrongs of this article, I shouldn't have deleted it as I was involved, besides it not being a G4. Which browser/OS are you using? I have tried with several browsers (Firefox/Linux, Safari/iOS (desktop+mobile), Firefox/Android (idem), Chrome/Android (idem), IE11/Windows7 (using an online "browser testing" site)) and all of them align the dots and dashes below the text baseline, with the proposed fix working fine. Maybe your system's default monospace font simply doesn't support the ▄ character (in which case I'd say the problem's on your side). Could you please upload a screenshot of User:Cousteau/sandbox/morse#Official: to see what my fix would look like on your browser? How about now? User:Cousteau/sandbox/morse — There seems to be some weird CSS rule in Monobook that sets line height to "1.5em" at some point (regardless of the final font size), and this made the vertical-align: X% attribute be based on this odd fixed size rather than on the actual font size. I have changed it from 50% to 1em to ensure that it is proportional to the font size. Do you approve? —Cousteau (talk) 16:10, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
That's working for me now, but I think it would look nicer if you set the height to be level with a dash. I make that 0.65em or thereabouts. I assume you are going to test with other browsers/skins before going live. SpinningSpark 17:07, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
It was supposed to be level with the dash... I have switched to 1.5ex (which is a unit that is supposed to be related with the height of a lowercase letter) which seems to work with all use cases. Mass deleted photos by Taivo

Dear Spinningspark, Sorry for late reply. I read your notice today. I sent the second reply to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Taivo This answer should explain the issue of laureates' photos uploaded as licence-free 'own work'. The unique photo of Zener is also explained; Professor Riviere is available by e-mail. Documentation, names, e-mails etc. can be provided for direct final verification. The issue of Koster is under negotiations with Max-Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Germany. Koster's photos were not available for long time for obvious reasons (NSDAP membership). The photo of Mason's was popular in academic community for long time (it was not provided by Mason's family). Thus the two oldest photos were not taken by a precisely identifiable member of the scientific community and/or family member. At the moment we are working to approach old Professors in MPI to obtain Koster's photo made after 1965. (His photo from 80' was used to produce the Koster Medal.; the original photo is lost). You may approach Mason's old colleagues from Columbia Univ. such as Dan Beshers (91 years old), Mason's family, or Prof. Elbaum. I was told that older generation (Mason, Nowick) from Henry Krumb School of Mines passed away. We do not have other Mason's photos. Our Mason's photo was copied from Nowick's lecture.

The editor from German wikipedia has already explained that several references refer to bio of recipients rather, not to the Prize. This is why the references in German wikipedia has already been sifted by around 50%. I will try to help to delete such irrelevant references in short time (we were not aware about this problem). Information about the Prize exist in printed matters not available in internet. I understand that they started to publish announcements in internet pretty late. I agree that references were not properly selected to meet wikipedia expectations and requirements. Frankly speaking, I am embarassed that you classified, for example, Alfred Seeger as a non-existing person or faked reference. Such people like Zener, Seeger, Bordoni, Nowick, Granato, Ke etc. are well known scientists with significant contribution in materials science and physics. Photo of Seeger was taken before the Zener Prize Award Ceremony in Rome in the Concert Hall (courtesy of R. Cantelli). Let me first clean some reference. Most of that is completely irrelevant. The images are still not "own work" and are still not your copyright and so have been improperly uploaded. Please don't conflate the issue, of course I don't think Seeger is non-existent. It is some of the refs in article that I think are non-existent. Sentence spacing

Double-spacing sentences is not the "proper" way to write or edit at all. This certainly isn't standard in literature, academia or media writing, all of which fields I have worked in professionally as an editor.

Guideline and policy news

  • The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
  • A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

Technical news

  • AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
  • When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
  • The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
  • There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.
