Access dates and other minor things

[edit]

Hi again, thanks for updating articles about Paralympians, particularly triathletes. I've noticed your edits because the articles about John Maclean and Lindy Hou, which I have expanded, are on my Watchlist. I particularly appreciate your use of informative edit summaries and high-quality references. However, please try to remember to add the date you accessed each reference using the "accessdate parameter; this helps guard against link rot and makes it easier to determine the providence of constantly changing data like sports results. Using the "date" parameter to note the date of publication of a reference where applicable is also helpful.

Another very minor issue with your edits is the placement of categories; HotCat, the script you're using, is a fantastic tool, but it's a bit neater to place categories in a specific order.

See my edits to your article about Yannick Bourseaux for a demonstration of both these points. Graham87 10:23, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please use full month names rather than abbreviations ("January" instead of "Jan"). Thanks for adding the oral history link to Lyn Lillecrapp (which I've renamed per your edits); the parts I've had the chance to listen to so far are fascinating, like many of he NLA interviews. Graham87 03:40, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, you'd already noticed ... oops! Graham87 03:47, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Paratriathlon

[edit]

Hi, I've noticed your interest in paratriathlon champions. I'd like to invite you to take a look at the Paratriathlon article which I created some time ago. The article is still largely the short superficial text that I originally wrote so it is probably ripe for further expansion by an interested editor such as yourself. Roger (talk) 12:59, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProjects you might like to join

[edit]

Take a look at WP:WikiProject Olympics/Paralympics, WP:WikiProject Triathlon, WP:WikiProject Disability and sign up if you're interested. WikiProjects are the "back rooms" where the processes around the creation and improvement of articles covering various topics are organised and discussed. Paratriathlon

[edit]

Whatever assistance you need, let me know. :) Happy to try to assist. I think at some point I had a go at triathlon classification but didn't get much beyond that. Honestly, not the sport I am most knowledge about. (And at the moment, I'm a bit distracted by skiing.) I don't think I've seen much information on the sport at NSIC. Has the IPC officially come out with classification and eligibility for 2016 yet? --LauraHale (talk) 16:15, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, nothing decided yet. I'm getting updates from the ITU via Clare Cunningham (athlete) on the ITU Paratriathlon Athletes Facebook group. Move towards functional classification for the current TRI-2 to TRI-5 (combined). Some discussion about factoring TRI-6, or equalising it in some other way, rather than requiring everyone in the class to wear black-outs on the run. I do hope they split the current TRI-1 - an S4/H2/T52 athlete can't reasonably be expected to beat a bilateral BK amputee, but everyone using a handcycle and race chair is currently lumped in together. Sportygeek (talk) 20:30, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully they figure out classification soon. They only decided the para-snowboarding classification scheme out what? in I think October? Cycling can be weird and something needs to be done there because someone set a world record in London but factoring meant she didn't even medal. Wikinews interviews Spain's most decorated Paralympian, Teresa Perales is an interview I did with one of the Paralympians on the IPC athletes council and there is now talk apparently about doing factoring for swimming. The individual classification articles are a good start, but they can be better. (LW1 (classification) and LW10 are good examples, especially when paired with Para-alpine skiing classification and para-alpine skiing as you can then see how all these pieces nicely fit together. Currently, they don't all do that particularly well.) If I could go back and re-do my PhD, I'd probably end up doing something on the history of classification because it is so fascinating. --LauraHale (talk) 20:39, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can't imagine factoring in international swimming competition, except in the lower classifications where people often compete up due to lack of numbers and thus limited events. At state and national level tho, multi-class racing against world records is more or less the norm (certainly in Australia and the UK). And there are some real anomalies in the current IPC swimming world records, where the WR for a lower classification is faster than the WR one or even 2 classes higher (eg Nataliia Prologaieva's S5 50m backstroke record, Kirsten Bruhn's SB5 breaststroke records). People in classifications with freaky fast WRs are seriously disadvantaged in multi-class - some sort of factoring system would probably be fairer (tho developing a good factoring system would be a major challenge of its own). While I love Jayme Richardson-Paris, so far she's the only female C1 rider. Makes "world record" a bit misleading and hard to interpret. Sportygeek (talk) 00:28, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Did you mean to undo your page move there? If so, why? Graham87 06:14, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Seems the original page has been linked to in lots of other articles. Wasn't sure how a page move would work in that context. Call me a n00b. Sportygeek (talk) 06:36, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the links to the article were through Template:2012 Australian Paralympic Team, a template that lists all Australian members of the 2012 Paralympic team, as its title suggests. I fixed the link in the template, but the links in the articles about the individual Paralympians weren't updated straight away ... the task of updating these links was put into the job queue. To speed the process up, I did null edits on many of the affected pages.
As for which links to update, Jayme has competed under the surname "Paris" at all Paralympic events so far, so I left the articles that discussed her various competition appearances as they were (e.g. Cycling at the 2008 Summer Paralympics). I originally updated the links at List of Australian Paralympic medallists and List of Australian Paralympic cycling medalists, but then decided against it because she hasn't yet won a Paralympic medal under her married name (I'm not hellbent on that decision). The only links apart from the template above that I ended up updating were administrative, such as Book:Australian Paralympians. BTW the guideline on this says to not fix redirects that aren't broken; I usually prefer to ignore this rule because I prefer clean "what links here" lists, but the issue is a bit more complex for maiden and married names.
Also, I moved your post at the Paralympics WikiProject to the talk page, where it's meant to be; the term "recent changes" refers to the Wikipedia feature of the same name, not recent news about the project. Graham87 10:28, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats... You asked an awesome question in the Teahouse!

[edit]

Learning to edit Wikipedia can be challenging, and you are so ahead of the curve. Case in point, asking questions about how to consolidate duplicate references. That's some advanced stuff right there and you're on top of it already. Please drop by the Teahouse (or my talk page) any time if you have more great questions. Cheers!

LW articles

[edit]

Hey, I saw you marked all of the LW classifications as on hold, but didn't provide any GA reviews. What was the reason for that if I may ask? I'm confused. Wizardman 03:22, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've passed the articles on to friends who are subject matter experts. Para-Nordic skiing isn't my sport, but I know CPISRA classification, and (before I edited) found some errors in the articles re that. Wrote what I'd done as a note in the GA template thingy - should I put something as a GA review as well? I'm rather new here :) Sportygeek (talk) 04:25, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The rules are that articles can be reviewed by anyone with a wikipedia user name, i.e. they can't be reviewed by an IP user who does not have an username. The GAN listings for these nominations appear strange, as there is no named reviewer and there are no reviews, but they are listed as being "On Hold". Your statement above is rather vague and it leads to more questions, for instance are you intending to sign up as the reviewer, or are you (in good faith, as the articles have then sitting there unreviewed for some time) possibly "braking the rules" by getting someone else to review them? You describe them as "subject matter experts", but what are they actually doing, giving advise to you (feedback?), or reviewing them themselves against the criteria for Good Articles? Finally, what reviews, the nominations don't yet have reviews, not even blank templates (those are the /GA1 pages that don't yet exist). If you need guidance just ask. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sandy Dukat, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Canton (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Invitation to the African Destubathon

[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:14, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
