Shiny things

[edit]

Well, thank you for the shiny award, but it took me about 30 seconds: copy, paste into http://diberri.dyndns.org/wikipedia/html2wiki/ , click "convert", copy, paste into Word, replace nowiki tags with nothing, replace / with nothing, copy, paste in Wikipedia, save :) Renata (talk) 03:42, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Still, it took about 1& or 2% of the time it would have taken me. :) —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  03:44 9 March, 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I haven't gotten to this sooner, I've not been around at all these last few months. It's not like I can't or shouldn't, I've just kind of gotten into other stuff. I…um…learned from Elara. ;) It's interesting, because sometimes (as you've noticed) I use slightly looser language on the net than I would in real life, but in real life I only swear when, well for example if somebody was threatening my daughter or sister or mother or pretty much anyone in my family, I would likely lose it and indulge my taste for the verbal colour palette. Apart from that, any young kids could listen to what I say during the course of my day. —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  18:28 8 April, 2008 (UTC)

One of my faves. BTW, thought you'd appreciate more César Cui in it. Thank me later.(-: Jonyungk (talk) 04:28, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cui only exists in hell (where he deserved to go), where he runs a conservatory. —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  04:32 13 April, 2008 (UTC)
Nothing more about the symphony? Perhaps I have given Cui more than his due. Jonyungk (talk) 21:46, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps. —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  00:53 17 April, 2008 (UTC)
Doee this mean I'm in the Rachdoghouse? I suspect you're really piussed off about this. If that's the case, it's like Andy M and the Mahler 2nd Symphony—why do anything on it? It'll all get undid anyway. Jonyungk (talk) 04:07, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh no, don't worry about that. Sure, Cui pisses me off, but in order to keep NPOV I suppose we should include some of his comments. I guess I could have sounded less curt there, but I didn't want to make an idiot of myself by soapboxing for thirty lines. :) —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  00:53 22 April, 2008 (UTC)
Well, that's understandable. You should perhaps save something for Pitts Sanborn's comments on the Rachmaninofff Fourth Concerto. :) Jonyungk (talk) 17:12, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
…which actually isn't that bad of a piece—I just happen to like the other three better. ;) —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  00:14 23 April, 2008 (UTC)
For me it's tempting to skip all four and head straight for the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Jonyungk (talk) 00:55, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Which I have also done. I have a six-CD set of Vladimir Aškenazy with André Previn conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. It has (this is all, I think)

Piano Concerto No. 1
Piano Concerto No. 2
Piano Concerto No. 3
Piano Concerto No. 4
Piano Sonata No. 2 ("why not No. 1 as well?" I asked when it came in the mail)
Suite No. 1
Suite No. 2
Russian Rhapsody
Preludes Opp. 3 #2; 23; 32
Etudes-Tableaux, Opp. 33 & 39
I think there might be one more thing, but maybe that's all. —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  23:00 23 April, 2008 (UTC)
Nice set. I have the "Trio" box set of Ashkenazy playing
Piano Concerto No. 1
Piano Concerto No. 2
Piano Concerto No. 3
Piano Concerto No. 4
Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Variations on a Theme of Corelli(The piece you were trying to remember?)
Piano Sonata No. 2
Nobody seems to do the First Sonata—it's big, extremely taxing and hard as hell to hold together. Olli Mustonen recorded a version recently that works for me. Sergio Fiorentino also recorded it but it didn't work that well for me—strange since I like most of the other Rachmaninoff pieces I've heard him play. Jonyungk (talk) 00:14, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That must be the same set I have. And the Corelli Variations were the one I couldn't remember. :) —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  01:04 24 April, 2008 (UTC)

Hi - I see you have recently created one or more new stub types. As it states at Wikipedia:Stub, at the top of most stub categories, and in many other places on Wikipedia, it is recommended that new stub types are proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it is otherwise correctly formatted, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, and whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there as to any rationale for this stub type. And please, in future, consider proposing new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 02:11, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How much do you like Shosty?

[edit]

I don't remember working as hard on an article on a piece of music as I have on the Lenningrad Symphony off-and-on the last couple of weeks. Funny thing is, I didn't rewrite the article—just added onto what was already there and NPOV'd much of the rest. Funny, huh? Jonyungk (talk) 05:37, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tuba cruft?

[edit]

You seem to be one of the only musically informed (judging by your edits) editors of the Tuba article. I suspect that many of the composers listed in the "Roles" section are either not all that notable, or are not even composers, but just the names of some middle-schooler's friends. Not knowing very much about the tuba or the repertoire, I thought I'd ask you to check it out or help find a knowledgeable tubist to help. Any ideas? - Special-T (talk) 01:49, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You mean this section?

(===Roles===) An orchestra usually has a single tuba, though occasionally a second tuba is required. It serves as the bass of the brass section, as reinforcement for the strings and woodwinds, and as a solo instrument.

The Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz was the first major work orchestrated for tuba. It was originally scored for two ophicleides, but Berlioz changed it after hearing the newly invented tuba. Other composers also composed influential parts for the tuba, including:

Concertos have been written for the tuba by many notable composers, including Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edward Gregson, John Williams, Alexander Arutiunian, James Woodward, Eric Ewazen, James Barnes, Martin Ellerby, Rober Jager, Alexej Lebedjew, Philip Sparke, and Bruce Broughton. Tubas are also used in concert bands, marching bands, and in drum and bugle (and drum and brass) corps. In British style brass bands, both E-flat and B-flat tubas are used and are normally referred to as basses.

 $PЯINGεrαgђ  04:08 26 May, 2008 (UTC)
Yes - the pieces named seem a little arbitrary (do they all actually feature some "top-10" tuba part?), but mostly the list of composers of tuba concertos needs a going-over by someone familiar with the literature. - Special-T (talk) 04:33, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly, but my thinking is that if the link is blue (which all but two of them are), then they're probably notable enough to be in the list. I also know from other material that at least Vaughan Williams, Willians, and Woodward actually did write concerti. —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  04:42 27 May, 2008 (UTC)
A couple of them (Barnes & Woodward, I think) lead to disambiguation pages which don't include a composer in the list; Broughton is a film composer, and his article that reads like a press release. It seems that, with such a short list, there are undue weight and possible COI issues. I'll remove the redlinks and bad links for now. Thanks for your help. - Special-T (talk) 11:27, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, let me look at it…there does indeed appear to be no composer by the name of James Woodward, however James Barnes is one (look at the list); was born in 1949. —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  19:31 28 May, 2008 (UTC)
I did a little trimming - my remaining concern is whether these are indeed the composers who should be on a very short list of composers of tuba concertos. Thanks a lot for your help. - Special-T (talk) 19:45, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
