My first edit on a talk page ever
I have a talk page.

Appropriate subjects for dab pages
WP:MOSDABRL states, for dab pages, "Do not create red links to articles that are unlikely ever to be written". Clarityfiend (talk) 05:40, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
- I realized that after I had submitted the edit. So thus, the edit was retracted and I took a different route (which should have been posted in the notes when I retracted my edit on the article in question.) Steel1943 (talk) 05:42, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Redirect requests
I noticed you requested several redirects at WP:AFC/R over the past few days. Why don't you create them yourself? Requesting them seems unnecessarily complicated. Huon (talk) 03:25, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- I wasn't aware that I could do so. Would I just go through adding a new article, with the only information in the article being the redirect template, and the target? (If that is the case, I had no idea I could do so; I was following the flow for creating a redirect via the article creation wizard.) Steel1943 (talk) 03:31, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- Every autoconfirmed editor (ie everybody who has been aroud for a few days and has made at least ten edits or so) can create new redirects just as well as new articles. The easiest way is probably to enter the desired name in the search bar, and if no article of that title exists, the first line of the results page will be:
- You may create the page "Redirect name", but consider checking the search results below to see whether the topic is already covered.
- Just click on the redlink and create a page with
- #Redirect [[Redirect target]]
- as the first line. You can add one of these templates to sort the redirect into the appropriate redirect category, but that's not strictly necessary. Huon (talk) 03:50, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Some of your goals
Hi, I noticed your intention #3 to update links from redirects to the most recent article name. This can be useful if an out-of-date or misleading name is displayed in an article e.g. Super 8 Hotels. However, if it is already displayed acceptably using a piped link as Super 8, it's best to leave the redirect as it is. Redirects work efficiently, and there is guidance somewhere which says it puts more load on the servers when editors change the links, than for the server to redirect page requests when readers click on them.
In any case, that seems to be a poor example, as the article starts "Super 8 Worldwide, formerly Super 8 Motels..." It that is correct, the page should be moved to Super 8 Worldwide. That would leave a redirect at the "motels" page, and only the "hotels" redirect page would need to be updated. I've left it for you to do...
Your aim number 4 (adding infoboxes) is much appreciated, thank you.
Aim number 1 is something that I also do, but selectively. I usually check first whether there are any more incoming links, by clicking on the redlink and then on "What links here". Multiple incoming links often indicate that a useful article could be created. In fact, some of the articles that I have created came about this way, using Google News and Google Books to find reliable sources to start a new article.
On a point of detail, please see MOS:DABNAME, as I hope this will explain why I re-edited the page Joseph after you today.
Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links could be a good thing for you to assist with, given your stated interests at this stage. I highly recommend installing the tool WP:POPUPS as it makes this work very quick and easy.
WP:WikiProjects might point you in other useful directions where you could collaborate with other editors. This includes WP:WPDAB and WP:WPNAMES, as well as all kinds of scientific & cultural topics.
Feel free to drop me a line any time! – Fayenatic London 13:26, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- Fayenatic london, thank you for you input regarding the submissions I recently placed, as well as direction in how to assist in some of the projects in Wikipedia. And your point about Super 8 Worldwide: I wasn't sure yet if it would have been acceptable to move the article over to that yet; the only location the name Super 8 Worldwide is even referenced is as Super 8's copyright. Super 8 has yet to brand themselves as so. I'm actually going to review that and, most likely, put in a move request for the article Super 8 Motels to become Super 8 Worldwide (and thus, do my aim #5 as a follow-up).
- Also, I was curious: I did review the article WP:DABNAME, but I didn't find anything about given name disambiguation pages should not have a hatnote. Am I missing something? Steel1943 (talk) 23:17, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- I see you moved the Super 8 page yourself – well done. WP:Be bold!
- I mentioned WP:DABNAME to explain why I was reinstating two individuals called Joseph (and only two) on the disambiguation page.
- MOS:DAB is the manual of style for disambiguation pages; it's probably worth reading it all, given your interest in this sort of editing. It mentions using hatnotes for different words that may easily be confused, as at Tongo. That's probably the only time to use them on disambiguation pages; other entries should either go in the main lists on the page, or under "see also" at the end.
- Something else you might be willing to help with is splitting name pages from DAB pages. For a few examples, you could review these edits of mine to "Mervin", "Marvin" etc.
- Lastly, can I offer another useful tool: append a search term to this if you want to find pages that include a word (or other characters) anywhere in the title.
- Special:Search/intitle:
- – Fayenatic London 14:40, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- Interesting points here. There are some cases where it's more useful to have a redirect than a piped link, because that leaves scope for future creation of an article at the topic which is currently redirected. If you pipe the link instead, we lose the ability to find easily the links to that topic. So please go carefully in your quest to turn all redirects into orphans: it's not always a good idea. In particular most of the redirects in Category:Redirects from subtopics should probably be left as redirects. PamD 07:25, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
- PamD, after a bit of working around on Wikipedia for about a month now, I actually now fully agree with you point (and, in effect, should probably change my list of goals.) I'm starting to obtain an outlook where the only real good place to have a piped link is in a template that includes the {{navbox}} template; this way, the link will not be selectable when on the article which the name clicked now redirects (example: since Studio 6 redirects to Motel 6, I would updated all links that say Studio 6 in the template to Studio 6 so that when on the Motel 6 article, the Studio 6 link will appear as Studio 6 instead of Studio 6.) In fact, yeah, changing goals now! Steel1943 (talk) 23:55, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
Nicki Minaj
Hello!
Thanks for helping out at Nicki Minaj! Looking over WP:LASTNAME it says: "For people well known by one-word names, nicknames or pseudonyms, but who often also use their legal names professionally (e.g. musician/actors Beyoncé Knowles, André Benjamin, Jennifer Lopez; doctor/broadcaster Dr. Drew Pinsky), use the legal surname." Minaj almost never uses 'Maraj' and it isn't featured on any of her professional work, I would advocate keeping 'Minaj' throughout because of this. If you think we should use Maraj in her 'Early life' sections, you could open a discussion on the talk page? Thanks! Jennie | ☎ 22:11, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
- I could definitely open up a section on the talkpage for this. However, I will state though that I was also looking at WP:LASTNAME and it specifically states at the very beginning "After the initial mention of any name..", and then it goes on from there. The recognition of the last name "Minaj" does not happen in the article until the second-to-the-last sentence in the "2004–2007: Career beginnings" section. For that reason, all mentions of her last name prior to the official statement of her becoming "Nicky Minaj" should remain "Maraj". I honestly don't think that this needs discussion: I am going to undo that action. If you feel this to be incorrect, please respond to this and I will move this conversation over to the article's talk page. Thank you. Steel1943 (talk) 02:22, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've opened a discussion on the article's talk page, here :) Jennie | ☎ 09:40, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Hi Steel1943, I'm replying here rather than on the template talk page, as that page should probably still be a redirect. Actually, {{db-multiple}} is already semi-protected, which is the same level of protection that almost all of the other speedy deletion templates have. (The only one that is fully protected is {{db-meta}}.) I think semi protection is probably sufficient unless the template is vandalised. I'm restoring the redirect from Template talk:Db-multiple to Template talk:Db-meta for now, but if you want a third opinion, feel free to post another thread on Template talk:Db-meta. Best regards — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 17:50, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
- No worries. I was putting that on {{db-multiple}}'s talk page due to the other WP:CSD templates of higher use (such as {{db-c1}}) having a protection level that would prevent users from trying to click on the dispute button on the template's page in error. Also, I put in the same request for {{db-spamuser}}. Steel1943 (talk) 17:57, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, I've indefinitely semi-protected {{db-spamuser}}, as it wasn't protected previously. If you spot any others like that, please send them to WP:RFPP. Thanks — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 18:17, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
- Mr. Stradivarius, thank you for that information. I was unaware that there was a request page for issues such as this. Steel1943 (talk) 18:27, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

I should have listed all of these last time, but I wasn't aware there were a lot more of these (until I looked through Category:Speedy deletion templates).
Could you please create the following articles/editnotices:
- Template:Editnotices/Page/Template talk:Db
- Template:Editnotices/Page/Template talk:Db-negublp
- Template:Editnotices/Page/Template talk:Db-gfdl
...and put this template in each of these articles/editnotices:

CVUA
- Electriccatfish2, I appreciate the offer, but no thanks. As I honestly desired to use the rollback function for a reason that is not the purpose for which the function was created, and since finding and fixing vandalism is all about being on the right article at the right time, and beating everyone else to the punch to be the first one to fix it ... no thanks. Steel1943 (talk) 02:54, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- No it isn't, actually. Vandal patrollers, such as myself patrol for vandalism at places such as Special: Recentchanges. We use automated tools that show us suspicious edits and we decide if they are vandalism or not. We'll teach you all about that at the CVUA. However, the CVUA is not the route to rollback. The function of the academy is to train users how to fight vandalism. Electric Catfish 19:58, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Speedy deletion declined: Ifrit (Final Fantasy 8)
Hello Steel1943. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Ifrit (Final Fantasy 8), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not a recently created redirect - consider WP:RfD. Thank you. — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 09:13, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
- No problem Mr. Stradivarius. Thank you for letting me know. Steel1943 (talk) 23:16, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for August 28
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Splinter, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Epidermis (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Ultima (series) GAN
Sorry, but I have failed your GA nomination of the Ultima series: Talk:Ultima (series)/GA1. The problems are multiple-issue tags and a serious lack of citations, real-world information and a real lead section. Obviously suggest addressing these before a renomination. Thanks, bridies (talk) 10:59, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
A quick editing question
Hi....I noticed that in re: article re: actress Jennifer O'neill in her filmography section, you corrected the release date of the movie "Committed" to 1991; that movie title is also now "in red" and mousing over it shows "page does not exist". Yes, there is no wiki article about this movie of hers, but the Internet Movie data base entry for this movie is here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094900/
but I do not know how to edit this "Committed" entry to link it to its appropriate IMDB entry, so a person can just click on it and go there. Any assistance appreciated.... thanks...Taninao0126 (talk) 13:55, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
Response to A quick editing question
- This was actually two separate edits. The first edit was, of course, that the date in the list was incorrect. However, that was a completely separate edit from the edit which I did that resulted in a "red link". If you look through the article edit history, the link that I created, Committed, is actually a link that appears like Committed, even though it directs to the non-existent article Committed (1991 film). Before I made that edit, that text did not link anywhere; it showed up as Committed. The reason I changed it was because I felt that at some point, the article Committed (1991 film) would be created by someone.
- Also, links to external sites do not serve a purpose in an article's main sections. Honestly, if you were to attempt to replace the Committed link I created with it, instead, directing to the information from an external site, your edit would be immediately undone by an editor such as myself. Links to external sites only truly belong as either references on an article, or one of the last sections in an article (in the article Jennifer O'Neill, the "last section" would be the section labeled External links. In addition, the External links section, at the present time, already contains an external link to the Jennifer O'Neill profile page on the IMDB web site, so including a separate link to the Committed movie profile on IMDB would not belong on the Wikipedia article Jennifer O'Neill (since the article is about Jennifer O'Neill, not about any specific movie she was in.) With all this being said, here is what I would recommend to you in order to not have anything be erased:
- ...Create the article Committed (1991 film). Cheers! Steel1943 (talk) 03:13, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
