Your edits

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your recent additions to Moldova and Romania-related pages. They're a net positive, but I noticed several problems. Firstly you shouldn't have moved Ion Creangă without any discussion, this writer is famous in both countries and is much better known than the other people named this way with articles on Wikipedia (thus he is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC). I've had to request the move to be reverted because of technical problems, please seek a formal WP:RM discussion next time. You also created a duplicate article Unified Control Commission when Joint Control Commission already existed and wrongly referred to the security zone as the name the Moldovan government refers to Transnistria as when it is a buffer/demilitarized zone under the control of the Joint Control Commission not including all of Transnistria and including some Moldovan-held territory. I also found it a bit strange to not use the diacritic in Creangă's own biography article, and people notable for one single event making them appear in the news cycle for some days are not considered notable (see WP:BLP1E), so a red link to Dmitri Kelov was inappropriate. Again your edits are a net positive but please avoid this carelessness in the future. You might need to be a bit less WP:BOLD in your edits. Have a good day. Super Ψ Dro 01:18, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Super Dromaeosaurus: Thanks for your comments. The great thing about wiki is that it is possible for an editor like yourself to modify when you see fit. You need not ask anyone's permission to do so. Just go ahead and change what you dislike. If you dislike my use of the ASCII English then you are free to insert whatever diacritics you like. Please remember that this is the English language wiki. I am partial to the Unified not Joint Control Commission because of its native Romanian: Comisia Unificată de Control, but I don't think I'll change it simply because I'm too lazy and I leave it to you. Have a nice evening sir. Stickhandler (talk) 01:39, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your understanding. In Wikipedia WP:COMMONNAME dictates what title should articles have. If a way of calling something is more common, it has priority. Compare these searches by looking at the results they generate [1] [2]. Even if "unified" would be closer to Romanian, English-language authors have already established a standard that we can only follow here. Super Ψ Dro 10:30, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's a TV station, not Youtube

[edit]

By the way, YouTube is not considered a reliable source in Wikipedia [3], I think it is only used as a last resort for important information if no other good sources exist. Saying because of this [4]. Super Ψ Dro 01:24, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Super Dromaeosaurus:. You need to look past the service provider towards the news organization that posted the clip. The French TV Station LCI La Chaîne Info is a WP:RS. Stickhandler (talk) 01:39, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I guess that's better, but any established editor would tell you it is preferable if possible to cite the station directly through its website than through YouTube. Super Ψ Dro 10:30, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How did you get the terms "Reichsführer" and "Oberführer",[5] both clearly German words referring to Nazi party ranks, when neither term is used in the cited source? Mellk (talk) 18:42, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Mellk: I think you mistakenly project your mindset when you write "both clearly German words referring to Nazi party ranks". For me it's quite clearly a transliteration of "border Czar" as in Czar (political term) or List of U.S. executive branch czars. Because I felt it would be misunderstood if "czar" were to be used in a Russian context, I instead used the German. Stickhandler (talk) 18:53, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, TMT says: "Putin said he had instructed government agencies to 'provide the needed assistance to residents' and ordered First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov to oversee their work following talks with Smirnov." Calling him 'border czar' or something equivalent would fall under WP:OR.
Secondly, I am not sure how the average reader is supposed to interpret "Oberführer". Unlike 'czar' (which as you mentioned has an article on this), which has uses in informal contexts, the same cannot be said for "Oberführer" or anything to do with "Führer" which clearly has connotations to the Nazi party. Even in German, such a term is associated with Hitler. Mellk (talk) 18:59, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mellk: Oh I see what you're getting at. Stickhandler (talk) 19:09, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Someone else was also confused by this (although they probably should not have referred to it as 'meme talk').[6] Mellk (talk) 19:11, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mellk: Although I disagree with your view of Manturov. He is the third most powerful politician in Russia at the moment. What he says to Kurskites is treated as if it comes directly from Putin's mouth. That's why the Moscow Times article made such a big deal about him. Stickhandler (talk) 19:13, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Which part of what I said are you referring to specifically? Mellk (talk) 19:15, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The part about it being WP:OR. Stickhandler (talk) 19:23, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The term 'border czar' or something equivalent would still be OR as it is not used in the cited article, this is what I was referring to. If we use another source from earlier to support the level of importance then this would be WP:SYNTH. Wouldn't 'border czar' also refer to immigration? At least that is what the current usage seems to be about. Mellk (talk) 19:28, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mellk: how about "Kursk Caudillo"? Stickhandler (talk) 19:40, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is better to use a term that is mentioned in the cited source. Is "First Deputy Prime Minister" not sufficient? Mellk (talk) 19:52, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mellk: but the First Deputy Prime Minister's job description does not list this special military operation in his task list. Stickhandler (talk) 20:11, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did not understand. Are you saying that Putin tasking him with overseeing the work of government agencies in the Kursk region during this incursion makes him a warlord (or caudillo/border czar or equivalent) in this case? Mellk (talk) 20:15, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mellk: yes, with maximum resource priority. Stickhandler (talk) 20:49, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can you find a source that uses similar terminology in regards to this? Generally we want to make sure that each statement is directly supported by the source. Mellk (talk) 20:55, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mellk: I doubt it, until a meta-analysis from a think-tanker. It's likely not all that important to be spending as much ink as we have here today. Stickhandler (talk) 23:05, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Becher process

[edit]

My source on industrial technology, which is very thorough, does not even mention the Becher process, so I am guessing that the article was misleading. For one thing, Ullmann's encyclopedia indicates that almost all TiO2 comes from rutile, not ilmenite. Also it says that chloride process is very dominant. But you might know more.--Smokefoot (talk) 14:02, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Apti Alaudinov

[edit]

Hello, Stickhandler,

Thank you for creating Apti Alaudinov.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

This person is probably notable but they are controversial and some of the language and claims in this BLP seem biased. When a character is so controversial, it is important the only the unambiguously accepted facts are chronicled, and not innuendo or rumour etc., thanks.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Aszx5000}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

Hello @Aszx5000: I encourage you to modify whatever you like on whichever pages you like. You do not need to address me here as you have done. Every last one of my edits is sourced with high-quality reference material. I encourage you to find other sources which paint a picture more to your liking. October 2024

[edit]

Please do not edit war to restore your preferred version after it has been removed, which you did at Mark Carney. Per WP:ONUS, those (in this case you) who wish to restore deleted content must seek consensus on the article's talk page. Please self-revert and take it to Talk:Mark Carney "Ghost of Dan Gurney" (talk)  16:54, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@GhostOfDanGurney: I'm sorry, no edit war was started. The onus appears to be on you because the original editor and I outnumber you. If you want to delete then the place to do it is on the talk page. Stickhandler (talk) 16:58, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:ONUS very clearly says otherwise. Also WP:BLP is working against you here. If you don't self-revert I will escalate this. We must get BLP articles right. ― "Ghost of Dan Gurney" (talk)  17:00, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@GhostOfDanGurney: the text with which you have a problem existed on wikipedia for several years. It was placed there by another editor, not me. Now you come along and delete it because you just noticed it and it ruffled your feathers. It is well sourced and an overseas editor from a major news publisher felt it worthy of notice. It puzzles me that you would feel entitled to escalate anything, while the consensus appears to be 2:1 against you. Stickhandler (talk) 17:11, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You moved it into its own paragraph, thus giving it greatly undue WP:WEIGHT. Please make sure you understand how WP:WEIGHT works before continuing.
Before, it was buried in the "personal life" section, hence why it was easily missed, but I would still argue that it's undue. The article doesn't even focus on any controversy, so this sourcing, even if it is Toronto Star, is dubious. ― "Ghost of Dan Gurney" (talk)  17:19, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I agree with you here. I'm happy to lend it lesser weight than it received as a three-equals subhead. My point was that it was misplaced in his "personal life" section. Maybe it belongs in his "Governor of the Bank of England" section as an unremarkable sentence. Honestly it is so slight as to escape notice, but since another editor thought it deserved mention, I said why not. Stickhandler (talk) 17:28, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You continue to try to edit-war this material in. Please find consensus on the article talk page before attempting to reinsert it. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 18:23, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's odd @NatGertler: where did I edit war? I don't think you can characterize any edit of mine that way. I invite you to try to substantiate your claims. Stickhandler (talk) 00:44, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here you are, reinserting the same problematic content that you had inserted earlier in the day... material on which discussion had been opened on the article talk page with no response there from you, much less consensus. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 01:29, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By my count, you "reverses or undoes the actions of other editors" three times in just over an hour. This means you not only were edit warring but came close to a bright line violation and doing this to restore disputed material on a living person without consensus and without you ever touching the talk page. I suggest if you're going to continue to edit here you quickly learn what edit warring is and the care required for BLP or you're likely to end up blocked. Nil Einne (talk) 06:23, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned on the article talk page, I didn't notice before now this was over two different things. However it doesn't matter since in both cases you are trying to add disputed material in a BLP and as our edit warring page says "reverses or undoes the actions of other editors, in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material". Yes "A series of consecutively saved reverting edits by one user, with no intervening edits by another user, counts as one revert" but I already checked this before my earlier comment and your three reverts had intervening edits. I was on a mobile device so didn't bother to add diffs but can now Can. This edit [8] was clearly a revert as you acknowledged in your edit summary "restore deleted content". You're undoing/restoring content that another editor removed/deleted so it's a revert. Next [9] you used undo for this one so again clearly a revert. Finally [10], you're again restoring the material like you did in your first edit. Making changes doesn't mean it's not a revert, per the "in whole or in part" definition of a revert. Nil Einne (talk) 11:04, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An article you recently created, United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1001 (ES-I), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.
