- Traditionally, 26 points/two silvers will be enough to qualify, as has been stated in the ISU press releases regarding both Guignard/Fabbri and Brezina. "Individual scheduled or expected future events should be included only if the event is notable and almost certain to take place," (from Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a crystal ball) or as the ISU states, "This second silver medal on the circuit should be enough to get the Italian couple into their first Grand Prix Final." and "The multiple Czech Champion accumulated 257.98 points overall to take the silver medal and most likely a ticket to the Grand Prix Final in Vancouver." In addition, here is an interview with Brezina where he discusses his GPF qualification; the source is a publication that focuses on figure skating. Thus, these are events that should be included, as they are not merely predictions; there is precedent and several sources suggesting the high likelihood of them occurring. It is NOT okay to add them to the qualifier table when they have NOT yet qualified. Not only is it speculation, it's also unsourced. As another example, some users thought Jason Brown would qualify last year and highlighted him early – he ended up being first alternate. To be frank, I'm currently not impressed with precision of language in IFS's reporting, given they also were the ones doing Březina interview where he corrected them that his qualification is not yet confirmed. 2. ISU, i.e. the people running the Grand Prix, state G/F hasn't yet qualified. ISU reporting overrules IFS reporting. 3. Other sources, e.g. Jackie Wong, don't list G/F as qualified yet. 4. Above, where I wrote, "It's okay to write a sentence saying that Březina and Guignard/Fabbri will likely qualify," meant in the literal sense to write a sentence stating they'd "likely qualify", not to list them in Qualifiers table as if their qualification is already 100% guaranteed which it isn't at this moment. 5. Wikipedia is not news, it's not our goal to add information before it's even confirmed. (Side note: if you're reading this comment after NHK is over, obviously calculation would be redone then.) Request for assistance[edit]
Hi Sunnyou31, User:Figureskatingfan here. I've been around Wikipedia for a while, but I'm new to editing figure skating articles, despite my username. It's been fun! However, not being a skater myself (I've worn ice skates only once in my life, when I was about 8 years ago, which is when I discovered that ice is hard and cold and I didn't like falling), one of my challenges has been to describe, paraphrase, and summarize sources. Kinda what we do as editors, right? I can never be sure if I'm explaining things correctly. For example, in the GAN for the Compulsory figures article (Talk:Compulsory figures/GA1, the reviewer wasn't sure that I was describing how circles were done. My response was that I wasn't sure how well I had described it, since I'm not a skater and have no idea if the content in the article matches what skaters do. It was suggested that I find experts who could tell me.
It may be presumptuous to assume that you're a skater, because perhaps you're just a fan like me, but I thought I'd at least ask for your help. Or maybe you know another editor who could help. At any rate, would you look at some of the articles I've worked on in the past several months? I'd really appreciate your input--a fresh set of eyes who has obviously at least some expertise in figure skating. Here's a list of what I've done so far: User:Figureskatingfan/Sandbox 4. Sorry, I should have been clearer; generally, in the past, the figure skating pages leave the [[]] and {{}} brackets in the templates for scores/results, because it's easier to edit them that way when competitions happen. - I dream of horses I guess it's an informal consensus, of sorts. It's usually how the pages are set up prior to the beginning of the season, and generally they remain that way until information becomes available to fill them in; it's just more convenient that way. hi, thanks for your help on Devid Naryzhnyy’s article and it was decided to be kept on wikipedia. I acutally felt very akward about the standard on nomination of deletion of figureskaters(they dont include Junior Grand Prix final) . So I looked up the history of edits on WP:NSKATE and I found someone revised the standard only a month ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/914141159 I’m only asking that is it possible to revise the standard without any permission? Junior Worlds, Youth Olympics[edit]
Hi, I recently noticed you reverted my edit on Mana Kawabe, placing Youth Olympics over Junior Worlds on the competitive highlights table. I (and at least one other editor who makes consistent edits on skating articles) have been placing Junior Worlds over Youth Olympics. I've been doing that for a few reasons, primarily because the ISU places weight on JW (as it counts toward a skater's ISU ranking, and YO does not), but also because it's not viewed as a competition with as much import in figure skating (i.e., the list of competitors at YO often lack the depth of the full international field that you would instead see at JW, and countries don't always send their best junior skaters to YO). Is there any reason to place YO over JW?

@Binaryhit: It's true that YOG doesn't count for World Standings, but since it does count for Personal Bests, it's still an important competition for those who do attend. It has a smaller field with stricter qualification rules, so it won't have the depth of JW, but I disagree that countries don't send their top skaters; several top juniors simply don't meet the age rules in place at YOG (e.g. Kamila Valieva was too young this year) or the event is seen as conflicting/too close to U.S. and Canadian Nationals (e.g. Alysa Liu choosing to skip this year's edition).
I place YOG above JW to mirror Olympics being listed above Worlds in the senior section of the results table, even if YOG isn't as important as OG (i.e. doesn't count for WS). Sunnyou31 (talk) 23:20, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
- I agree that YOG is an important competition (I never said it wasn't). And I'm aware of the things you mentioned: that there isn't as much depth because of qualifications and age restrictions. Also, I simply said countries don't always send their top skaters; you even acknowledged so with Alysa Liu, not to mention Alena Kostornaia, Anna Shcherbakova, or Alexandra Trusova, all of who could have potentially competed and are certainly their countries top skaters. And yes, YOG is an event that is around other events (e.g., U.S. Nationals, Europeans), but that also goes to show the priorities skaters have; focusing on a senior national from a major skating federation is more important than the potential for a YOG medal, and obviously senior Europeans are more important than YOG even if it has "Olympic" in its name.
- I get the idea of making the junior/senior sections of the competitive highlights table parallel, but the Olympics really are held to a different prestige than the Youth Olympics. Again, the fact that YOG does not count toward world standing (though the Olympics do) really doesn't make it a true junior equivalent to the Olympics, so I don't feel it's right to mirror that.
- I acknowledge that there is a lack of consistency (i.e., some skater pages put Junior Worlds over YOG, while other flip that). Personally, I would like to make it all consistent by putting JW over YO (and would argue there is more prestige in the former), but I don't know if there are enough editors involved on skating Wiki to have a consensus or make a manual of style for figure skating articles. binaryhit (talk) 02:11, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Name spelling[edit]
Thank you very much for your contributions to Gym articles: I do appreciate it. Very much. But please consider that I would also give my own contributions and peculiar knowledge to improve those articles, as you do. FIG (licence) is not the « Bible » for how to write properly names with no errors. They forget accents very often in French and Polish names, write Ukrainian names as they were Russian, put not always usual names. Cypriot Greek names are not always spelled as the Greek ones. Of course they are as correct as possible (99%) because most of the countries in the world use Latin spelling in the same way, but do not consider FIG like a good source of spelling. In most of the cases like for Elīna Vihrova, you have to admit I wasn’t wrong. So please when I write "Anastasiya" (and not Anastasiia) you can control easily elsewhere that I am the only one to write this first name in that way (in the best sources). - Hi Arorae, I understand that you are making good faith edits. I believe FIG licenses are a good starting point, even though they can only use the standard alphabet (i.e. no accents), because these are the official names submitted by gymnasts' federations. My reasoning for reverting:
- * Per Wikipedia:Romanization of Ukrainian: "Living and very well-known people's names normally use their own preferred or most common spelling"...which for both Bachynska and Motak would be "Anastasiia" or "Anastasia".
- * WP:COMMONNAME also states that: "Wikipedia...generally prefers the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources)" which is again, "Anastasiia" ([1], [2], [3]) or "Anastasia" ([4], [5], [6]). I have included "Anastasiya" as an alternate spelling on their pages, as it is used by some gymnastics media, albeit relatively rarely ([7]).
- Hi Arorae, I understand that you are making good faith edits. I believe FIG licenses are a good starting point, even though they can only use the standard alphabet (i.e. no accents), because these are the official names submitted by gymnasts' federations. My reasoning for reverting:

- Thanks again for your very complete reply and answers. I have saw that you have already moved back Elina to Elīna (as I thought). In Latvian, many newspapers do not put the correct accents (even if they are compulsory in this language, even on Rīga the capital) especially when written by Russian native speakers (they do not care because no existing accents in Russian). Vihrova is (probably) a Russian-speaker so she doesn’t care a lot about writing her name in the Latvian way. - as per WP:Commonname, WP « generally » prefers. What about Viktoria Listunova? FIG (licence) spells her name Viktoriia (see here), but I am sure that a very few people will follow this strange spelling (the correct one would be Viktoriya). As you can see Anastasiia is written on the same scheme. By people who do not care a lot to have standardised spelling. I agree that Commonname should be our main goal. - Arorae: The FIG license is a good starting point, but since "Viktoria" is equally common or more commonly used in the media, it's probably fine to leave as is (For example, Aliya Mustafina's current FIG license is spelled "Aliia", but she is better known under the "Aliya" spelling). Most names that use the -iia or -ia spelling in the FIG database are used interchangeably depending on the editor on Wikipedia; the names that use -iya on their FIG license are generally reflected on Wikipedia (e.g. Anastasiya Alistratava). Hi Sunnyou31, I am trying to create Wikipedia pages for Vasilisa Kaganovskaia and Valeriy Angelopol. I am very very new at this and am so lost. I tried to use other ice dance pages as a template, but would you be interested in helping with these pages? I feel like they could have a good chance of a podium finish at JGP Finals and Jr World Championships this year. It would mean a lot if you could help at all - even if it's just putting in a basic template I can fill out. Thank you so much!

- Hi Avenc17, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm happy to help create their pages, although it's currently a bit early for Kaganovskaia/Angelopol to have pages (see WP:NSKATE for the general criteria to determine notability). Creating pages is definitely hard, and I think it's important to be familiar with Wikipedia's syntax first, whether that be through editing or using your sandbox, before doing so. The infoboxes on their draft pages look fine so far, but any template that I could provide would be the same as on other skaters' pages, which you said you've already looked at so not sure it would be very helpful.
