If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Burkett Restaurant Equipment & Supplies, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Zachlipton (talk) 20:06, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

[edit]

I am sorry if my first reply to you was rather terse: we are so anxious to encourage everyone to come and edit that (in my opinion) we do not do enough to explain in advance what Wikipedis is not, so new users cannot be blamed for thinking that it is a sort of super-Myspace or free advertising platform.

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a business listing directory or a vehicle for any kind of promotion. It does not expect to have articles about every company (though Wikicompany does). Articles have to be of enough general interest for an encyclopedia article: the Wikipedia term for that is Notability, which is not a matter of opinion but needs to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones and anything based on press releases. The test is, have other people, independent of the subject, thought it significant enough to write about? More detail in Notability (organizations and companies).

Also, articles must be written from a neutral point of view, and so people are strongly discouraged from writing about themselves or their own organizations, because of the conflict of interest involved - their interest is to promote their company, Wikipedia's interest is a neutral, impartial encyclopedia, and experience shows that people too close to their subject find it difficult to write neutrally and avoid PR-speak. For those who want to edit despite a COI, there is a code of conduct at WP:BESTCOI: in essence, do no more than propose changes, and let uninvolved users decide.

You also need to understand that (unlike business listing sites) if your company has an article you will not own it, will not be able to control it or insist on your preferred version, and may encounter Wikipedia's law of unintended consequences.

For more advice, read the FAQ/Organizations, in particular the sections headed:

A tag has been placed on Burkett Restaurant Equipment & Supplies requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
