Re Team SMD (Science Carnival 2010)[edit]

This is an article about a McGill university varsity sports team. It should not be deleted as it is very important to the team to maintain its wikipedia article. The competitive nature of the program requires that the team maintain a wikipedia page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Szpejdman (talkcontribs) 17:58, 16 November 2009

There is nothing that suggests this team is notable, a mandatory requirement for article inclusion. Remember, Wikipedia is an article, not a social site. Singularity42 (talk) 18:02, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NOTE: All of the above has been copied from Talk:Team SMD (Science Carnival 2010). Singularity42 (talk) 18:04, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've noted the "hangon" tag you applied to the above-captioned article. You make an interesting argument with respect to this being a sports team, but there seem to me to be inconsistencies in this presentation. If you are a team competing in a science carnival, that's not a sport as far as I know, and I'd fall back on the requirements of the general notability guideline; there are no reliable sources indicating that this team has any kind of notability. If you are a drinking team, as the article states, then I would look to the requirements of WP:ATHLETE. So far as I know, there is no serious recognition of the consumption of alcohol being considered as a sporting event by your university -- my recollection as a McGill alumnus suggests that, far from being officially recognized, it's quite likely that this would be officially repudiated. There is certainly no professional drinking league extant and I am quite unable to find any amateur association that governs international or national-level drinking bouts, indicating (as seems reasonable to me) that all such competition is entirely haphazard, without any recognized rules, schedule, etc. At any rate, I find it extremely difficult to accept that consuming alcohol is recognized as a legitimate sport by anyone and I would require much, much more in the way of concrete evidence (such as, for instance, the analogous materials relating to the existence of a professional eating competition) before accepting that argument. For those reasons I have decided to agree with the individual who tagged the article for speedy deletion. However, if you feel you have a case to make (I think you'd be wasting your time and everyone else's, but you are entitled to make a case for the article's reinstatement) you can try deletion review. Best of luck with your future contributions to Wikipedia. Accounting4Taste:talk 21:55, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
While I was writing this note, a colleague deleted the article, probably for the same reasons. My pointer to WP:Deletion review still applies. Accounting4Taste:talk 21:57, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you.

A tag has been placed on Team SMD (Science Carnival 2010) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, individual animal(s), an organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Singularity42 (talk) 22:29, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the above comments from Accounting4Taste before re-creating this article. Thanks! Singularity42 (talk) 22:29, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's about enough, Szpejdman. Altough you mount an entertaining defence, it is nonsense, and you know it. Cut it out. Seriously. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 22:30, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree. Please use Facebook or other social networking software for the kinds of purposes you're suggesting; it truly is not appropriate for Wikipedia. Accounting4Taste:talk 22:42, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Team SMD (Science Carnival 2010) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. November 2009[edit]

Please do not replace Wikipedia pages with blank content, as you did to Scantlly Clad Olympiad. Blank pages are harmful to Wikipedia because they have a tendency to confuse readers. If it is a duplicate article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If the page has been vandalized, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed. Jdrewitt (talk) 16:57, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
