June 2014

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm John from Idegon. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Fort Hunt High School, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. You have shown nothing to show that the violinist is notable. See WP:BIO for guidence on what that takes and plase read WP:WTAF and consider following its advice. None of the entries you added were shown by either their articles or by any of the references you added to be connected to the school. Both notability and a properly referenced connection to the school either added to the list or in their bio is required for inclusion on lists like these. Sorry if you were troubled by my actions, but when you write about people it has to be right. One of the most inviolable policies here at Wikipedia is WP:BLP. I am sorry but I do not have the time at the moment, but I will be more than happy to help you get it right sometime later. In the meantime, there is a page here in Wikiland that offers help for new editors like you and is directed specifically for new editors so the hosts try to keep it simple. This stuff is very confusing at first, but I have fith that you will catch on, and I am more than happy to help. Link to follw, and a simplified set of instructions on how to reference that will explain the mechanics of referencing. There were issues with the quality of the references you used also, but I will help you with that later. Not all references are created equal. Happy editing, and I will come back later and talk in more detail about what the problem was. I will also reinstate the one edit that you made that was pretty much ok for a person. Have a good day! Note

[edit]

It should be noted that when I attempted to chastise John for reverting a new editor, I should have taken a look the references. Some mentioned the people went to a different school than what was mentioned. The other references gained with in bio but didn't state where they went to school, and it would be original research to include that without the reference stating what school they went to. John is an experienced editor, and would've explained the situation far better than I could glean with just a brief overview. I'd listen to him, and please negate my earlier comments about 'biting'. It's not what John was doing. Tutelary (talk) 16:52, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Noted and understood. I thank you both for your help. Talers (talk) 18:09, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the entry you added because for lists like these when we say "Notable people" we mean "people who have a biography in Wikipedia" (see also this), which is not the case with the person you listed. Perhaps they do deserve an article of their own, if they meet the notability guidelines. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 18:44, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Further on that. I have to run a quick errand and then (finally!) I will have the time to sit down and offer you a considered reply to your enquiry of this morning. One thing that was a hard learn for me when I was starting out is that Wikipedia:There is no deadline. Everyone here is a volunteer, even the administrators. Whomever you may be consulting collaberating or trying to reach a consensus with has varying demands on their time and may not be able to get right back to you. There is no hurry. A corralary to that is that when we are talking about living people, it is better to leave it out until the issues can be resolved. so, I will be writing you soon. It is quite possible with the time dif that you might not see it til morning, and that is just fine! TTYS> John from Idegon (talk) 03:26, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
