OOK

Good news: The entire OOK project has been renamed to "Outlines". The main links are:

Outlines on the Main Page?

A proposal to place a link on the Main Page to the outlines page is premature.

Besides, a proposal to add any links to the Main Page is likely to fail, because not long ago they did just the opposite and removed links. The line of links just below the portal links was removed, because the links there were already included in the main menu on the sidebar.

What I'd like to see is the portal links on the main page replaced by links to outlines. But that won't be possible until the outline system surpasses portals in quality and quantity. The Transhumanist   21:18, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

It's the sidebar we want

Once the set of outlines has been developed to very high quality, then there might be a chance of getting a link to the outlines page on the sidebar. The sidebar is displayed from every page on Wikipedia, including the Main Page. It would be far better to have a link on the side bar than on the main page. Keep in mind that they took links off of the Main Page that were also on the sidebar. It's become an either/or affair: have a link on the Main Page or the sidebar, but not both. Having a link on the sidebar is a lot better.

Quality would have to be very high. A link to the outlines page is one level below the sidebar. It's on the Contents page which is listed on the sidebar. We would need strong justification or a hell of a lot of support to get a link to the outlines page added to the sidebar. High quality could justify it.

But we've got a lot of work to do to reach this goal. Your help and continuous participation is needed. We need active editors. The Transhumanist 21:18, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Where your help is needed

Where your help is needed is in improving outlines and watching them and their support pages. And most importantly, maintaining outline support pages and participating in outline related discussions!!!!

For example, we missed you at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Contents/Outlines. That's right, less than a month ago, someone tried to start the process of deleting all outlines by nominating the main outlines page for deletion.

Four months ago, someone removed the links to the main outlines page from Wikipedia's content page (the one that's listed on Wikipedia's main menu in the sidebar). They also removed the outlines links from the contents system's navigation templates (the navbar at the top of all the contents pages and in the footer template). There weren't enough editors watching these pages to revert those edits. I was the only one, but it takes more than one editor to overcome the 3 revert limit. Finally it took a proposal to have the links added back in. See Portal talk:Contents#Proposal to restore Outlines entry and keep "Outlines" on this portal's menu templates. Your help was badly needed in watching over and editing the outlines system, and your opinion was needed in the links proposal discussion.

For the whole year preceding that, between October 2009 and September 2010, an editor waged a move war and edit war and discussion campaign against outlines. He kept renaming them to "List of basic" and "List of", and he repeatedly reformatted outlines, like removing their lead paragraphs, removing outline footer templates, etc. etc. I got blocked twice during that war.

We still haven't repaired all the damage that was done. Some of the changes were locked in by discussions on those outlines' talk pages.

Before that, someone tried to reinterpret the outlines instructions page as a guideline proposal and marked it "failed". There was an edit war over that, which was eventually settled on the talk page.

Where have you been?????!!!!!!

The outlines project very much needs your help. It needs you to watch over it. It needs you to become involved.

I will be happy to answer any questions you may have, and to assist you to the best of my ability. The Transhumanist 21:18, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

P.S.: I have a project for you. Are you interested? -TT

  • Sure, anything specific you need is fine, you need only ask. I appreciate you bringing me back up to speed. Thanks, Tarheel95 (talk) 22:34, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Cool. Please start Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines/Popular pages - the instructions are at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.
See others at CAT:POP or WP:POPT. The department is at [1], and the department head is User talk:Mr.Z-man.   The Transhumanist 14:30, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
What do you mean it doesn't recognize "outline"? The project's name is "WikiProject Outlines". Did you read the FAQ? What happened?
Keep in mind you need to set up an assessment system for outlines. See Category:Wikipedia 1.0 assessments and Category:B-Class articles.
Good luck. The Transhumanist 21:55, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
  • I attempted to use B-Class outlines, which was created today. I received the message "recheck category name." Tarheel95 (talk) 22:45, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Popular pages

Greetings. It seems that the Outline project's fearless leader has given us both the task of engineering a "Popular pages" page for the project. Some coordination is probably in order...what has been done so far to facilitate the page? It seems that the biggest sticking point is the form's requirement of a "B-class assessment category," something our project doesn't have since we don't have an assessment system.

In short, what can I do to help? Robert Skyhawk (T C B) 23:54, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

  • All we will need is some way to bypass the B-Class assessment on the toolserver. (Link). As I understand it, the rest of the information should read as follows:
  • Name of Project: WikiProject Outlines
  • Desired name of list: Leave default
  • B-Class Assessment: Bypass if possible or create a system
  • Max pages: 1500
  • Link to project talk page

Your help is extremely appreciated. Thanks, Tarheel95 (talk) 00:19, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

I've added assessments to the transclusion of {{WikiProject Outlines}} template on each outline's talk page. To get the pages to categorize, you'll need add the necessary wikicode to the template. Good luck. The Transhumanist 02:47, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
I dropped a note at Mr.Z-man's talk page asking if there is a way to bypass the requirement of a B-Class assessment category. Will advise should he reply. Robert Skyhawk(T C B) 00:50, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Your contributed article, Outline of bodybuilding

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using theArticle Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I notice that you recently created a new page, Outline of bodybuilding. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - Bodybuilding. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will to continue helping improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Bodybuilding -you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think that the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion(just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note onthe talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contactone of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest thearticle creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. ttonyb (talk) 04:13, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi there. Please do not change genres that contradict reliable sources, like you did in this edit. I have reverted it. Thank you. Yves (talk) 04:11, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Outline update 2011-01-18, and an invitation...

Tarheel,

As you probably know, I'm in the process of getting the outline development team back up to speed. I hope you will help keep an eye on things.

With that in mind, here's a copy of the update on the project I've been sending everyone (you are mentioned, and I've interjected a few notes to you as well), followed by an invitation...

We've undergone a name change: the project has been simplified to "WikiProject Outlines".

The current main focus is on increasing the availability of outlines. If readers can't find the outlines, the outlines can't help them. We need to figure out the best places to put links, and the best ways to attract external traffic directly to these pages.

While studying the link structure to outlines, I came across a navigation aid I forgot we had that you (Tarheel) might find interesting:

If you'd like to use the main page with outline links instead of portal links, set Wikipedia:Main Page alternative (outline links) as your default main page. See the instructions.

(Is that what you had in mind for your Main Page proposal? Test it out for a few weeks to see how comfortable, or uncomfortable, it is. Let me know what you think.)

Due to the occasional sniping attempt on outlines and their support pages, outlines now have an alert page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines/Article alerts. Please go there now and add it to your watchlist.

Tarheel95 and Robert Skyhawk are working on a project to track traffic to outline pages. Speaking of traffic...

A discussion on outline traffic analysis has been started on the Outlines WikiProject talk page. You are cordially invited to participate. Your input is greatly needed on possible ways to increase the availability of the outlines. All ideas and feedback are welcome. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely, The Transhumanist 08:45, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

P.S.: don't forget to watchlist the alert page mentioned above. Cheers. -TT

P.P.S.: how goes the traffic tracking project!!? When will it be fully operational? -TT I'm having trouble with the wikicode for the template you suggested using, do you know someone who can help? Thanks for the update, I will try out the main page link. Tarheel95 (talk) 01:37, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
