He is a professional rugby league player for a Super League team.Londo06 18:14, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I concur with Londo and have removed the speedy tag - clearly a notable subject. Kim Dent-Brown (Talk) 18:20, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. It's not about the notability of the subject, but that the article did not assert the subject's importance or significance. If simply being something automatically asserts importance or significance of the given subject, then something is wrong somewhere. This could all be avoided if people creating articles would invest a small bit of time asserting the importance of the subject while the article is within their own user space, and then bringing the article onto WP. Just my two cents. -- Taroaldo (talk) 18:38, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"in the European Super League." equals significance and importance. The article can be fleshed out by any editor, however as it stands it describes him as playing for a first-grade team. Hyberbole is the probability when articles need to assert the significance, rather than imply it.Londo06 18:54, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Londo06, thank you for the clarification. I will defer to your position, as I am sure you know much more about the European Super League than I do. To me, differing views of importance and significance simply highlight the problems endemic to Wikipedia and its policies. While we all strive for NPOV in editing articles, the same cannot be said for the development of policies governing this environment. -- Taroaldo (talk) 19:08, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heartbeat (Scouting for Girls song)[edit]

I didn't remove the speedy. I simply added a hangon tag.--h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 15:46, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Someone told me that it is OK to do that when your in an edit conflict. I guess that was wrong. I'm very sorry. That persons IP address was blocked by the way.--RyRy5 talk 05:29, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your Welcome. But do I still get my vandalism warning 1? It was an accidental vandalism.--RyRy5 talk 05:39, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will be careful from now on if I take advice from someone who has a bad history. So, this won't effect anything like if I request for adminship, right? And this doesn't count as warning 1, right?--RyRy5 talk 05:57, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be sure to remember that. I never get mad, and I don't intend to vandalize. This is how many people like me as a friend. There is also someone who thinks that "I'm their rolemodel". It's true that I always have a cool head, and I plan to become a very good admin in the future. Thank you very much and I hope you can support me in the future!--RyRy5 talk 06:16, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I plan to run when I have 4 months of experience with at least 5000+ edits. I have been at wikipedia for 1 month and I already have an amazing (as told) 2800+ edits. So, I will run at around June 20th. I will have at least 2 nominators by then (because 2 have already asked). I will be sure to remind you.--RyRy5 talk 06:29, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: New Brunswick Communities[edit]

Have you any idea how much is missing? Please look at the articles on French communes. There are over 30,000 French communes and all have been created with one single sentence. First the article need to be created with basic structure, development is the second step. I am creating these articles to fill up the gap. Thank you for the kind (yet anonymous) words. Just out of curiosity, since I only have one account here, who do you think I am a sock puppet of? Cheers. --- Taroaldo (talk) 19:03, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You sure about that?[edit]

I mean the article is literally two sentences long. Isn't there some sort of 'bare minimum' length for articles? HalfShadow (talk) 03:03, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • According to WP:ATHLETE any player or coach of a top league team automatically satisfies criteria, and even the inclusion of a single sentence is sufficient to exclude csd as an option. Even if it were taken to AfD, the result would likely be keep. Earlier today I encountered one editor who was going through a map and adding one-sentence articles on a bunch of tiny communities in his home province. I mentioned that the volume of these new pages was a bit excessive, but he disagreed. The way Wikipedia is set up, he is correct. None of those pages would likely be deleted under AfD's. Even though we may not like it, eventualism is still throwing its weight around. --- Taroaldo (talk) 03:15, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't really matter to me, per se, I just thought bios had to be a bit...bigger than that. HalfShadow (talk) 03:28, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly they don't, as long as they meet the relevant criteria. --- Taroaldo (talk) 03:31, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I just read the notice you sent to that admin. I was a little too enthusiastic back then. And I felt so sorry of what I did I wanted to apologize. I don't think that was wrong, if it was, please tell me. Also, the adoption Program wasn't really my idea. Two other users (that I know of) have an adoption Program too, one is an admin. I'm also not trying to start another adopt-a-user program. I is only for my adoptees to learn better while giving out tests. I also let admins grade the tests after I do. I also don't unserstand the 3rd notice you gave him/her--RyRy5 talk 06:40, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm not sure what "3rd notice" you are referring to. --- Taroaldo (talk) 06:46, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hope this helps. Look here--RyRy5 talk 06:55, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The location for that referenced link did not fully open. Simply click on the diff - older version at the upper left, and the referenced section should open correctly (it'll be the version on the right). --- Taroaldo (talk) 07:11, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So, do you have any comments about the message I sent?--RyRy5 talk 18:13, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I understand the comments you made above. A couple of admins have provided you with some useful information on your talk page. I really don't have anything else to add to that, except to suggest that you carefully read and consider their advice. -Cheers, --- Taroaldo (talk) 18:28, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have taken their advice and have decided to slow down a little with the program. I hope you can still put in a good word in my RFA. Cheers to you.--RyRy5 talk 23:28, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for reverting my vandalism... it kinda hit close to home. Made me a lil sad when I saw what he wrote. Guess I shouldnt take it to heart and let it roll off, eh? You're welcome. It is a pleasure to revert vandalism whenever I find it, but it is sad that some people have nothing better to do with their time than disparage others. As you spend more time on Wikipedia it will get easier to let it roll off. I think that user has received an indefinite block now, but we'll keep an eye out in case they return under another guise. -Cheers, --- Taroaldo (talk) 19:10, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving my talk page[edit]

Thanks for the message -- yes I have thought about using one of the automated archiving bots, but I don't have a clue where to start. Any pointers please? – ukexpat (talk) 21:36, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. If you wanted to do a basic manual archive, you could create a subpage of your talk page (something like [[/Archive1]]). Bots are definitely easier, especially if the talk page is used frequently. I was actually thinking about looking into one for myself. I will check it out and let you know what I find. --- Taroaldo (talk) 21:47, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I know I could do it manually, but there's no geekiness in that! Please let me know what you find out! Thanks. – ukexpat (talk) 21:56, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering, do you have any comments about anything, like my adoption program?--RyRy5 talk 07:54, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Well, I have seen your sig. in a few different areas while watching Recent Changes. Working in a variety of areas (as you have been doing lately) is an excellent way to broaden an editor's experiences on Wikipedia. I would encourage you to continue, best wishes, --- Taroaldo (talk) 18:53, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I have been working on mainspace edits these last few days, and I finally have 500+ mainspace out of my 4000+ total. I know I have a long way to go, but I plan to at least have 1000 mainspace out of my 5000+ total. I just wanted to let you know how I'm doing. Thanks, I'll continue my work.--RyRy5 talk 23:41, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Great job with the mainspace numbers! Thanks for letting me know how you're doing. --- Taroaldo (talk) 23:47, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I wonder if you would consider a merge/redirect !vote now I have written a page on the school district, please? TerriersFan (talk) 16:35, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi. Thanks for the effort in quickly creating the SD article. I would support a merge, but I still am confused about the reliability of the original RHMS article. In Rolling Hills Middle School it notes that the principal is Gloria Silva, however in the school's web page it says the principal is Rick Ito. The two people mentioned in the RHMS article as senior administrators are not listed anywhere in the senior administration as seen on the school's official page. Since the creator of the RHMS page has no other contributions to Wikipedia, I am concerned that, though the school is real, the page may have been created as a hoax. --- Taroaldo (talk) 17:59, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ignore the above (except for the thanks, of course). I was suffering from a coffee deficiency at the time. Obviously the merge & redir. with the appropriate information is the way to go, and I have now indicated such at the AfD. --- Taroaldo (talk) 18:37, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Pointing out the error with regard to the Principal was helpful. TerriersFan (talk) 18:43, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I have been trying to explain, there were multiple edit conflicts on both talk pages, as a result I pasted in more information than I intended (ie: made a mistake). You haven't even given me a chance to respond on my own talk page, which I think shows that you are not assuming good faith. I came to the debate on the article in question because of what I saw on Recent Changes and it appears that good faith is lacking among quite a few editors there. I will give you an opportunity to remove the above note. Thanks. --- Taroaldo (talk) 22:29, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There were five minutes between edits, I gave you good faith by just letting you know that the first reversion wasn't right, I don't see how five minutes later your second reversion could be considered good faith. Corvus cornixtalk 22:33, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am sorry that you cannot accept an explanation made in good faith. I have replied on your talk page. Thank you. --- Taroaldo (talk) 22:40, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:DTTR. Corvus cornixtalk 22:40, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • That's fair. But WP:DTTR applies both ways. I'm not going to jump through hoops to satisfy someone who isn't being reasonable. Obviously my attempts to engage you in a constructive discussion have been futile, and it's not worth my time to continue. (This note is cross-posted from here) Cheers, --- Taroaldo (talk) 22:57, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

gayelle[edit]

Gayelle (lesbian), I have added many new RS to the article and therefore I would like you to reconsider your vote that was based on a previous version that did not take your WP:NEO or WP:N and WP:RS and WP:V concerns into account.NewAtThis (talk) 04:01, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi. Please review WP:RS. One of the references now listed in the article is a blog called "Neology". Please consider how problematic it is to cite a page titled Neology when you are trying to show that a word is not a neologism. Even the blogger states that it's a "fascinating attempt" to create a new word. How does this support keeping the article? Other references are equally weak. My position remains to delete this article. Thanks. --- Taroaldo (talk) 04:21, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Info re: AfD nomination of Venetian People's Movement[edit]

This comment has been cross-posted from here for my reference only.

  • Hi Checco. I have seen a consensus emerging regarding the above article, so I have withdrawn the nom. I do continue to have concerns about references in another language being provided on English Wikipedia. An editor on English Wikipedia cannot properly ascertain WP:RS or WP:N this way. I made a comment in the nom about WP:RSUE but it was never addressed one way or another. I would appreciate receiving your comment about WP:RSUE in this matter. Thank you. Signed, Taroaldo

--- Taroaldo (talk) 17:56, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I answer here. I understand your concerns and I agree with you that it is better to find English sources for en.Wiki articles. There is a problem, anyway: many parties from non-Enghlish-speaking countries (especially the small ones, but even the largest ones) have no sources in English. Does this mean that they are thus not encyclopedic? I don't think so. A party is encyclopedic because of its electoral strenght, its parliamentary representation and in general its relevance in the taken country. --Checco (talk) 06:55, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think your new pages are neat! Nice creativity. One small thing I was wondering about was the admin-type logo on the menu bar. Do you think it might cause some inexperienced new users to assume you're an admin? What's your opinion on that? --- Taroaldo (talk) 04:50, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. Maybe instead, I should change the admin mop with the admin mop with a ? (question mark) on it. I think it would work. You?--RyRy5 Got something to say? 17:11, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A question mark can imply some mystery. That would encourage people to click, and then they would see the page with your goals on it. Good idea! --- Taroaldo (talk) 19:41, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How I arrived atthat conclusion[edit]

Well, for one, what does the first parameter equal? Nothing444 12:40, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • "subst" indicates to the software that the template should be expanded to the full current version on the page where it was placed. This means that even if the template is modified in the future, the version you placed on the page will not change. This is important on user talk pages because the recipient will read and respond to the message as first seen on the talk page. If the template changes in the future, some context of the user's original comments may be lost. And, according to Wikipedia guidelines, all templates in Category:User warning templates should be substituted. --- Taroaldo (talk) 20:04, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This gesture has roots in Trinidadian culture and its name was not derived based on a word. Due to its nature, it has not found itself to be documented or labeled in any text as it is a fairely recent developement. It is also only practiced by a certain age group (mainly adolecents) in the country. Any cultural expert in Trinidad and Tobago with knowledge on adolecent sub-culture will be able to validate this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.140.155.41 (talk) 20:43, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi. Information in Wikipedia must meet criteria for verifiability. We cannot make assumptions about things which cannot be verified. If something is known colloquially, it still must have reliable sources, which would be more than word-of-mouth confirmation. This is why, for example, neologisms cannot be added. If a cultural expert has written something on the subject in a verifiable and reliable source, that information could be cited in the article. I certainly found the article interesting. Just a heads up[edit]

I thought you might like to know that the Awards Center page has been deleted, along with its newsletter.  :(

So, where do we go from here?

To new and even more interesting projects, of course!

As announced in the newsletter, I've been preparing to co-coordinate a large collaboration/competition called Around the World. It was going to be run at the Awards Center, but since that no longer exists, the collaboration will be hosted somewhere else.

Around the World will begin July 15th as planned - it's location will be announced soon.

It'll be a blast. In the competition, participants will be helping to develop over 200 pages (drafts, which will be moved to article space once they are ready), using advanced tools to edit every single one of them!

This is going to be interesting.

And the event shall have awards which are being created specifically for it as we speak!

If you would like me to keep you informed of this and other interesting collaborations I'll be working on and/or organizing in the future, please drop me a note on my talk page, and I'll be happy to keep you in the know.

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

The Transhumanist 21:50, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I need your feedback...[edit]

Which one do you like better?

Please let me know on my talk page.

Thank you.

What is Around the World?[edit]

It's a collaboration!

A collaboration using advanced wiki-tools!

If everything goes according to plan, it will begin on July 15th.

The event is being co-sponsored by Wikiproject Lists of basic topics and WikiProject Geography, and participants will be "traveling" all around "the World" visiting each country online (here on Wikipedia and perhaps beyond) as they apply advanced wiki-tools to improve pieces of the profiles of each and every country on Earth!. Each pass through these pages is a "trip around the World..."

The set of pages we are working on is currently located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics.

Each page presents essential information on each country in a topic outline format, for ease of overviewing and navigating. Most of the topics presented are linkified, which turns these pages into a hypertextual map to material about each country on Wikipedia. When completed, they shall all become part of Wikipedia's contents system.

The pages share a standard format, with the information on each country presented in the same general order. So rather than getting stuck on a single country trying to complete it, each participant works on all 200+ political entities, completing a single data item or detail across all of the pages!

For this they use advanced tools like WP:AWB, Linky, etc. It goes fast, and since others are doing this at the same time, it makes "the World" feel like a beehive, and the participants are its bees.  :) The energy is contagious.

And since you are moving from country to country, the tasks make it feel like you are traveling around the world, and you get to learn a little about every country as you do so. This approach also allows for greater efficiency, because by the time you've done 30 or so of a particular item, you've figured out how to finish it faster and more effectively (such as where to find the data or how to make adjustments), and this specialization speeds up development - but more importantly it reduces errors.

The tasks are varied, which adds even more variety to the project. Some tasks are look-ups-and-fill-ins, some are copy and paste, some are image hunts, some are maintenance adjustments, some are link fixing, some are blue-linking (creating an underlying redirect so a link turns blue), some are fact checking, etc.

For an example of what a nearly complete page looks like, see these:

List of basic Albania topicsList of basic Argentina topicsList of basic Australia topicsList of basic Canada topicsList of basic Ecuador topicsList of basic Egypt topicsList of basic France topicsList of basic Germany topicsList of basic Iceland topicsList of basic India topicsList of basic Indonesia topicsList of basic Iraq topicsList of basic Republic of Ireland topicsList of basic Italy topicsList of basic Isle of Man topicsList of basic Israel topicsList of basic Japan topicsList of basic Macau topicsList of basic Mexico topicsList of basic Russia topicsList of basic Taiwan topicsList of basic United Kingdom topicsList of basic United States topics

There are only about 200 more pages to go!

During the collaboration, co-coordinators will be standing by, to lend a helping hand to participants, provide instruction and tips on how to use the tools, and help them find what they are looking for. Co-coordinators will also be using advanced tools to inspect the work of participants, and touch it up as needed, or if a task was done wrong throughout, point this out to the participant so he or she can make the necessary corrections.

Co-coordinators are working on the set of pages right now, to familiarize themselves with "the World" so they can help more effectively by the time the main event starts. But there's still lots of preparation left to be done, and we are looking for editors experienced in advanced wikitools who would like to become co-coordinators.

Country outlines project update - 2009/03/08[edit]

Remember "Around the World"?

Well, we've been around the World, and around again (virtually speaking, on Wikipedia), on this project.

Things have been slowing down again, so it's time for a big push...

We've gone live[edit]

This project needed a shot in the arm. Also, its draft pages have been littering Wikipedia's categories for months. The time seemed right to move all the country outline drafts to article space.

WHAT???

Well, the drafts had been sitting in Wikipedia space for a year.

WHAT???

Development has been moving at a snail's pace and we could use the help of the Wikipedia community at large (who are more likely to find these if they are in article space).

WHAT???

Yes, we've gone live.  :)

This puts pressure on us to get the blatantly incomplete elements of these outlines done. The only glaring problem is the government branches sections. These need to be corrected ASAP.

I've mentioned THE GOVERNMENT BRANCHES SECTIONS many times to many people over the past year, but the problem just doesn't seem to have been taken seriously. So let me put it another way:

HELP!!! I need your help on this now. Almost all the countries have a government with an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch. The links for these branches need to be completed for each country outline:

Here's a convenient list you can use WP:LINKY on to access and edit these quickly. Please copy the list's link to the top of your talk page so that you can access it easily.

If you spot any standardization in links, and ways we can automate parts of this process, or for groups of countries that have links in common, please let me know!

Administrative support for outlines[edit]

There has been growing pressure on me to write up the administrative pages for outlines - their instructions, guidelines, etc. Therefore, I'm now in the process of composing these. Fortunately, it is mostly a matter of gathering material from messages I've written to you guys over the past year. Still, this is taking up most of my time, and I will be buried in these for the foreseeable future.

Traffic control[edit]

The next big task after the government branches sections are cleaned up is link support for the outlines.

There's quite a list of links and notices that need to be put in place around Wikipedia, providing access to them to readers, and alerting editors to the need to develop and maintain these pages. This will keep our bot people very busy (and happy).

But the most important thing right now is to get the government branches sections completed. So please, put your bots aside, roll up your shirt sleeves, and start typing.

Thank you.

Thanks for the message[edit]

Hello, Taroaldo. You have new messages at Stephen Keller's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

I wasn't sure exactly if I should put this template in a new section or at the top of the page. Apologies if it's in a poor place. Stephen Keller (talk) 19:49, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You put the template in the perfect place!! Taroaldo (talk) 20:05, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is this how you do it?[edit]

Interesting... thedatrunner —Preceding undated comment added 22:48, 10 March 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Hi! Yes exactly. (And you can also sign your name using four tildes like this: ~~~~.) If someone writes something on my talk page, I will normally answer on my talk page too, and I will leave a template note on their talk page to let them know I replied. If you have any questions about Wikipedia, please let me know and I'll be happy to try to help! Taroaldo (talk) 22:54, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. So what do I do now? It would be great if the page was deleted. I'm trying to create a better page in my sandbox. Is that what people generally do? Thedatrunner (talk) 23:06, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it would be best to develop an article in your sandbox first (most editors do this). As long as the deletion tag remains on the current article, it will likely be deleted shortly. If you think you can develop the article quickly, you can use the "hangon" feature under the deletion tag to show that you want some time to work on the article. If you want to take more time to work on it, then using your userpage sandbox is best, as you can work on it there without worrying about speedy deletion tags, and then move it over to article mainspace when you're ready. Feel free to ask me or any other editor for help with formatting, content, or any questions as you develop the article. Cheers! Taroaldo (talk) 23:15, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for offering your help. I had a question about uploading a picture. I work for the non-profit whose page I'm trying to create. What license would I select to upload a picture? Is there a section about non-profits somewhere? Thedatrunner (talk) 00:40, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi. The kind of info required for an uploaded picture depends on the kind of picture -- do you own it, do you have the copyright holder's permission, or does it qualify under Wikipedia's fair use policy, etc. Regardless of whether or not the subject is a non-profit, the image must satisfy Wikipedia's criteria. There are a number of WP guidelines which will provide all the info necessary: WP:PIC, Image descriptions, WP:IUP, and WP:ICT. I would suggest getting the text and sources of the article lined up first. This will give you plenty of time to determine which of Wikipedia's criteria your pictures fit. Article progress[edit]

Hi. The article is coming along really well. The layout looks great! Do you know of any reliable third party sources which could be added? Or perhaps some links to scholarly papers which credit Diabetes Action as a funding agency?

The reason I ask is that article creation can be hit-or-miss depending on which editors come across it. The standard notability criteria for non-commercial organisations is:

"Organizations are usually notable if they meet both of the following standards:

1. The scope of their activities is national or international in scale.
2. Information about the organization and its activities can be verified by third-party, independent, reliable sources. (In other words, they must satisfy the primary criterion for all organizations as described above.)" -----This was quoted from WP:ORG which is a defining guideline for organisations to be included in Wikipedia.

A concern in this case is references, which so far appear to be internal. WP:PSTS outlines information on sources and is Wikipedia policy.

In short, the primary Wikipedia policies are:

Although Wikipedia claims it is not a bureaucracy, many of its policies can be overly-complex and spread-out. The best advice when creating an article is to ensure to the best extent possible that notability has been established. Notability varies widely: for example a professional league football player is automatically notable (as long as their qualification is verifiable), but an organisation can face a stiffer test.

This article should succeed, but it is best to "address potential objections before they are raised".

I've rambled a bit with a lot of wikireferences and it's late night/early morning where I am, so please let me know if any part of what I wrote is unclear.

Again, well done with the layout. Cheers.

But what is the problem[edit]

What was the problem with my edits to hungary PS: I ve just been in Hungary and would edit a bit, I guess there is no problem to do that, it will be very nice from you, mate, to indicate why you remove my edits ? Stalker X (talk) 22:39, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I have already undone my changes. Sorry for the confusion. If you could write a brief edit summary when saving changes, it would make things a bit clearer, especially is such a big article. Hope you enjoyed your time in Hungary. Cheers. Taroaldo (talk) 22:45, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
