Request reason:

My block appears to be completely arbitrary, and based on some wild fantasy by User:Jeffrey_Vernon_Merkey. Admittedly, he seems to have reason to be paranoid, but I feel I have been blocked as part of the collateral damage caused by his highly contentious edits, and his subsequent marking of anyone who disagrees with him as trolls, stalkers, spambots and the like. I shoud add that it appears WP policy was not followed in my ban, no checkuser appears to have been requested or carried out and I have been contacted in no way. I've tried to contact User:Duk about this, but have had no reply after 48 hours, hence my use of this template. Content of mail follows:

Hi.

Apparently I'm blocked for being a single-purpose troll acount. Super. Mr Merkey appears to believe I'm someone he's had dealings with before, Talks_with_birds, based on the fact that the aforementioned lives "by the seaside". Neglecting for a moment that there are quite a few people who live at or near the seaside, he also claims I live "on Vason Island in Washington". As a matter of fact, I live in <redacted>, France, which although idyllic, is neither on an island, in Washington state, or within about 500km of the nearest stretch of ocean. You'll probably see my IP as resolving to Annecy, that's where Orange connections from around here end up.

I did explain my reason for registering, and my reason for posting, in the Talk:Cherokee page, I do not recall "trolling" him, merely expressing an opinion differing from his. Christ, I've tried to be polite in all my dealings with him, even though his edits on the Cherokee matter touch me deeply and are, I feel, flat-out racist.

Of course, Mr Merkey has been a Wikipedia editor for longer than I (as you are aware, I have made no edits that weren't on talk pages), and is apparently a major funding contributor, so I expect my ban will just be another casualty along the wayside. I think it's a shame that people who have something to say in a discussion get banned because one particular user is being paranoid, though. Sure, he appears to have reason to be paranoid, and there certainly are people out trolling him, but I'm not one of them.

Decline reason:

Wow. A week old account already familiar with WP:ANI and WP:RFCU. Hard for me to WP:AGF on your word alone. Please email unblock-en-l from your French ISP based email account to verify your identity and we can take it from there. --  Netsnipe  ►  18:22, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

I'm sorry, but after reading up on Mr Merkey's history, particularly his tendency to sue people, I'd rather my ISP email address stayed well away from any kind of wikipedia storage. That said, if you want confirmation of who I am IRL, mail my registered email address, and I'll happily reply direct to you from my ISP account.

Yes, I'm familiar with the way wikipedia works, and yes, my account is only a week or so old. My personal reasons for finally registering after years of using wikipedia as a first hit for research are given here and here, and can be summed up, in short, as "I don't like the overtly political edits Mr Merkey is making on something that I feel attached to". I haven't gone as far as reverting edits, calling people trolls, sockpuppets or spambots, violating the 3rr or being out-and-out rude, as Mr Merkey has. I haven't managed to get 2 distinct entries on WP:ANI either, for that matter. I do feel somewhat sorry for Mr Merkey, though, and there's no hard feelings toward him for my block. He's obviously being trolled something rotten, and it's good that the administrators have taken some action, but I do feel that I've been caught up in it all inadvertently.Teseaside 19:17, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FYI: the unblock-en-l mailing list archives are not open to the public. --  Netsnipe  ►  19:21, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know. I'm paranoid.
Tell you what. Just forget it. Forget I ever existed. I really can't be bothered with this bullshit. Somebody comes tramping in, starts hackand-slash editing a sensitive article, wielding his mighty POV as the only possible truth, labels everyone who disagrees as trolls, and somehow this is OK. He boasts of his massive donations to Wikipedia - well, if he's donated, good on him, but that shouldn't mean he should be able to make edits willy-nilly. Look at his fucking edit history, for christ's sake. The people he's not trying to get banned, he's trying to drive away. Just rename it "Merkeypedia" and be done with it.
I have a bunch of stuff I was going to post that's utterly non-related to Cherokees or anything Mr Merkey would even consider interesting. If I get round to it, maybe I'll bother to log in as an anon once my IP has changed, and upload it. If not, well, I won't. No great loss, WP has lived without my edits until now, ad will continue to live without them tomorrow.

The above rant written under the influence of frustration. Thanks to User:Netsnipe, for calming me down a bit.Teseaside 08:04, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
