Puhdys

Hello again, Paul. I'm still working on the Puhdys article, doing bits as I have time. (I hope I don't get chewed out by Wikipedants for not doing it all at once to reduce the revision count.) Anyway, I've still got the last 10 years to go, but the subject has not attracted a lot of other editors. (I wrote Silly (band) all by m'self as well.) So, if you could take a look at it and tell me if it needs any improving, or if something needs more detail, or less, or whatever, I'd be grateful. Participant alert regarding Wikiproject on Advertising

The Wikiproject No Ads, created as a backlash against the Answers.com deal, has served an important function in providing a space for users to express their disagreement with the Foundation proposal. While the current controversies about userboxes raise questions about political and social advocacy on Wikipedia, there should be greater flexibility regarding advocacy about Wikipedia in the Wikipedia namespace. Reported and linked by Slashdot and other press sources as a unique and spontaneous occurence in Wikipedia history, it has apparently had some impact as, despite being scheduled to begin in January, not a peep has been heard about the trial and proposed sponsored link since the deal's controversial announcement months ago. Currently, however, there is an attempt to delete the project or move it off Wikipedia altogether. Since the Foundation has provided no additional information and has not attempted to answer the specific questions that participants in the project raised, it is unclear if the Answers.com deal has been abandoned or simply delayed. autoblock

It seems you were affected by what's known as an autoblock, in which case the message you saw was not intended for you. Rather, it was intended for some other person who used the same IP address. Probably the message mentions the username of that other user. Unfortunately the IP address in question has been blocked a number of times in the past.

Autoblocks are only temporary and usually expire after not too long. Personally, I'd like to see a software change so that confirmed users such as yourself are not affected by autoblocks. -- Curps 23:17, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

I never played Alpha Centauri. I also do not have Civ4. By the way, the languages I want to learn are Mandarin (You may have noticed that I am also on the Chinese Wikipedia) Russian, Arabic, Latin, and Nahuatl. License tagging for Image:Russian Empire in 1900.PNG

Thanks for uploading Image:Russian Empire in 1900.PNG. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

I noticed you reverted the Russian Federation flag I inserted into the Russian Empire article. The inter-language wikis (such as the Finnish one, which I put in my edit summary) have it as the Flag of the Federation and I've seen that flag elsewhere. As a matter of fact, I've seen several different flags, but yours is the first I've come across. Do you have any sources? Oh, and Nikolay? Where did you hear that? I put in an explanation in the talk page for the article, but the main reason being that, as you said yourself, it's the flag of the Russian Federation, rather than the Empire. I also reverted it because the flag that I put into the infobox was that listed previously on the page as the flag of the Empire, as it is the flag of the Romanov Dynasty. If there's some other source that lists it as being the flag of the Empire as well than I'm happy to put it to that, but until that time I'd feel safer using the flag we have.
And for the record, Nikolay is one of the more common transliterations of the name Николай Александрович Романов. I don't care if it's listed as Nicholas though, means nothing to me. Tev 03:52, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

"Yoke"

I'm afraid you are slightly incorrect about the word "yoke" and its meaning. It is negatively connoted. However, I would like to see it stay in the article for two reasons. First, it's traditional: Russia under the Tatar yoke; Bulgaria under the Turkish yoke. Second, the AHD (through Dictionary.com) defines "yoke" to be

The condition of being subjugated by or as if by a conqueror; subjugation or bondage: 14th-century Russia under the Tartar yoke; the yoke of drug addiction.

You will not dispute that the Turks subjugated the peoples under them? --VKokielov 07:18, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid I don't know enough about the Ottoman occupation of the Balkans to be able to decide if I feel that the peoples of the region were oppressed, but I'm willing to leave it as is. I'm glad we could reach a consensus. Tev 14:49, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
Again: subjugated and oppressed are two words with the same basic sense but different shades of meaning. Oppression indicts a mode of government; subjugation -- a government itself. There is no question that the Israelis subjugate the Palestinians; whether they oppress them is a different question altogether. --VKokielov 17:53, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
Alright, if you'd like to go into specifics such as that; yes the Turks subjugated the Balkans, as well as Greece, Anatolia, modern day Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Kuwait, large chunks of Egypt, and at one time much of the coast of North Africa. I don't know enough of the occupation of these territories to make an opinion one way or the other whether these peoples were oppressed. Happy?
Also, since we're going into specifics, the definition you supplied of yoke still carries negative connotations; I doubt anyone would think of being in bondage (at least in this context) as a good thing. It's not enough for me to make a fuss over, but because something is tradition doesn't necessarily mean it's neutral. To use your own example, the 'yoke' of drug addiction can be nothing but negative, and being 'under the Tatar yoke' is hardly neutral, regardless of any truth or untruth in the statement. To be neutral it should still be a word like rule or, yes, subjugation. If something were a negative rule, an adjective such as harshly could be applied. However, that's semantics, and it's not important enough to me to go any further. I'm happy with the article as it is. Tev 18:05, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Mein Deutsch is gut genug, die Songtexte in hohem Maß zu verstehen (na, manchmal brach' ich ein Wörterbuch für spezifische Wörter, und Rammstein mögen solche gebrauchen), aber mein Englisch ist insgesamt besser, ich denke. Huh, just imagine — Rammstein coming to Bulgaria... that's even more impossible! :) I've never seen them, but I'd like to some day, even if I have to travel to Germany or some other country.
Anyway, I've been studying German for almost three years now, and although I don't really use it extensively, I've reached the level of speaking it fluently... to a degree :) As for English, I began studying it while in second form (grade) and I even visited England for two weeks several years ago, so I'm much more confident in my English skills than when communicating in German. Like I said, I only started German pretty recently, largely because I only developed an interest in other languages recently (as in about two years ago). German has been one of the easiest to learn though, at least so far. Latin's been the worst =p

Yep, especially Rammstein... they tour Western Europe, parts of Central Europe and that's it.
German was quite easy for me too, but I had to put in some hard work the first year. German's related to English, so it must have been even easier for you as a native speaker of English. A Bulgarian can say he's got some primary skills (Babel level 1) in Serbo-Croatian and Russian just because they're very close to Bulgarian (but I've had experience with both), and Bulgarians generally don't consider Macedonian a separate language, but a codified dialect and the child of Tito (but don't say that to a Macedonian if you'd like to remain friends :)) Anyway, without any experience with Macedonian a Bulgarian can have a conversation and be perfectly understood (and vice versa), so it's about being born with Babel level 3 ;)
I've travelled quite a lot in Europe and have visited many countries (some even several times), but I've never been to another continent, although I'd really like to. Who knows, I might visit Canada some day! Todor→Bozhinov 11:34, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
I've had some study with all of the major Romance languages except Romanian and Portuguese, so I can understand what you mean by closely related (while English isn't itself a Romance language, it still has quite a bit in common with them, largely due to the French conquest of England in 1066). I found Spanish to be the easiest of the lot, but I was surprised by German being even easier. I always read that for a native English speaker German was one of the easiest to understand, but I never really believed them until now. Go figure.
I've never been off my own continent either, unless you count islands off the main bulk. I've really only ever been to Canada, the States, and Mexico. Not too interesting I'm afraid.
And they have been to the States a couple times, but never anywhere remotely close enough for me to go see them, so they might as well have stayed in Central Europe for how much it effects me =p
If you ever do come to Canada, I'd recommend the West Coast (where I grew up), it's a lot less populous and the terrain is prettier, but if you don't like a bit of cloud or lots of drizzle than you might enjoy other parts of the country more. Tev 15:07, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice! Canada is giant compared to Bulgaria (since it's only a little smaller than Europe), so you must have a lot to offer, and we tend to hear only good things about it here.
In Bulgaria, the major tourist attractions are the Black Sea Coast (Sunny Beach, Golden Sands, Albena, Nesebar, Sozopol) in summer and the mountain resorts (Borovets, Bansko, Pamporovo) in winter, but if you're searching for historical heritage, you might find Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo more attractive, as well as some of the villages and smaller towns. You may also like Sofia, as the capital and the centre of almost everything here, if you like 19th- and 20th-century European architecture and can cope with the crowds and traffic. The infrastructure is generally OK and even great in the better-known tourist places, but is often bad in the country. Todor→Bozhinov 12:43, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Glad to hear from you again! :) I'm pleased to hear you're planning to visit Europe soon. You'll certainly like the Rila Monastery if you decide to go to Bulgaria too. You can combine it with a visit to Greece as the monastery is not too far (less than 200 km, I think) from the Greek border, or otherwise arrive by airport and do some sightseeing in Sofia, which is even closer.

Certainly, listening to German-language music really extended the range of my vocabulary. I even learned some curious words that you wouldn't expect to hear at school :) I heard Antikörper about a week ago (I downloaded it — I'm certain it wouldn't ever be released in Bulgaria and ordering from abroad would be very pricey) and I think it's a great album. I particularly liked Leider, Ohne dich, Vergissmeinnicht and Wie tief, but as a whole the album has a very homogeneous, danceable feel, while at the same time every song is unique. Have to admit that I downloaded it too..while there's an American release, if I ordered it from Amazon it'd cost me more than I want to spend just now. I'm keepin' an eye on the price though; if it drops low enough I'll probably buy it. At first I didn't like Antikörper as much as Eisbrecher, but it's grown on me lately and I pretty much agree with your assessment there. Personally I liked Leider, Ohne Dich, Entlassen, Kein Mitleid (especially the beginning on that), and Vergissmeinnicht. I definitely hope it sells well, since now I want Eisbrecher album #3!

WikiProject Former Countries

I would like to invite you back to WikiProject Former countries. You were previously a member of its former incarnation WP Historical States. The objective of this project is still to improve the content and accessibility of articles on former countries. A taskforce for the states of the Holy Roman Empire has also been started and the child project on Prussia has also been revived. Don King

The article on Don King was blanked because it contained negative unsourced statements. Please do not revert to a version that contains these statements, as it violates the BLP policy. Mexcellent 08:48, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

As I understand it, blanking a page for of any reason is called vandalism. If you have a problem with the article then comment on it in the talk page or remove the negative information yourself. Tev 16:30, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Blanking a page for BLP reasons is not vandalism. You should also be aware that when you restore potentially damaging material, you are the one taking responsibility for it, the same as if you had put it there in the first place. Also, the blocking policy now states "Editors who repeatedly insert unsourced or poorly sourced contentious biographical material about living persons to articles or talk pages may be blocked for disruption. Blocks made for this reason are designed to keep the material off the page until it is written and sourced in accordance with the content policies, including WP:BLP, and should therefore be kept short in the first instance." -Mexcellent 21:28, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
If you want to make a case out of it, go ahead. I'm not taking credit for anything, and when an anti vandalism bot, as well as other users, revert your changes then I'm confident in my position. I frankly don't know a damn thing about Don King, but I'll go by what others do on Wikipedia. If you want to get an admin and have them tell me that you're right, then I'll sincerely apologise and let the whole matter go. Until then, I consider blanking a page vandalism, and will continue to try to remove it when I see it. Do with that as you will. Tev 08:03, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Since I don't have any desire to cause problems, I've also posted a plea for(sourced) information on the man on the the talk page for the article. That being said, I do think that blanking a page for any reason is vandalism. If you have that big a problem with it, you should nominate it officially for deletion and let the community decide. Just my (admin's) 2c: I think Mexcellent was right, partial blanking or "cropping back" (with a proper explanation) is definitely not automatically vandalism, if there's a good reason for it. Otherwise, we'd have all our article grow into chaos and never a chance to keep order. In this case, the BLP argument was strong. The fact that the bot is programmed to catch blankings just reflects the fact that many blankings are vandalism, but certainly not all. Fut.Perf. ☼ 11:24, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Okay, well I'm perfectly willing to admit that I might be mistaken here, since I didn't actually end up reading through the article, but when something that is as long as it was is changed to 'Donald "Don" King is a boxing promoter' without any stub tags or much of an explanation in the edit section, then I tend to assume that that's vandalism.
