Creating a new category

[edit]

Hey there. Thought I would ask you a quesdtion about HOW one creates a new category? The reason is that I have FINALLY been able to get lists together on what specific towns in WV belonged to specifc coal fields. Ergo, WHY NOT have a category that states town x, belong to the coalfield Y. The specific coalfield in question is the Winding Gulf Coal Field, BUT there are of course several more coal fields and I thought, WHY NOT do something and help out?Coal town guy (talk) 20:30, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the ais use of the category, I made an error as I was trying to get a specifc town. ThanksCoal town guy (talk) 01:29, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. By the way, for future reference you make a new category in the same way that you make a new article, except the only content that you actually put in while editing is the categories that category belongs to (and in some cases the category's main article, though that's not necessary in most cases). Company Store and Truck System

[edit]

Hey there, I have a doozy of a style question for you. I am at this time delighted to have created a Coal town article and an approved article on Coal Scrip. BUT, since the archetype structure in a coal town is, The Company store, I was , CONCERNED because, I was redirected to the Truck System. In a coal town, you went to the store, it did evolve into a type of truck system because, there was nothing else for miles around, kind of well remote. I think the current redirect is a total political POV which is a valid discussion but fails to define what the Company store was. It would be fabulos to have that as a part of an article, but I have no wish to revisit grad school and discuss post structuralist socialist arguments that made academics feel great while my family worked to death in a coal camp. SO, in keeping with the neutral POV which I would like, what would be the proper and nice way to say, hey, we will have a new article here and can we have the politics a part of an article the defines what a Company Store was?Coal town guy (talk) 12:19, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I can see how the article got redirected. In anywhere where other stores would or could exist, such as company towns in urban or less remote rural settings, the company store primarily existed as part of a truck system so the workers would have to buy their goods there. Coal towns are a special case since they were so remote, though, and the company store was the only store that would have existed in the area. Of course, based on the coal scrip article, the coal companies set up a truck system anyway (possibly to keep other stores from opening, but that's another discussion). Of course the company stores did have other functions in coal towns (which you probably know more about than I do), but since the only thing the coal town stores seem to have had in common with all other company stores was that they were part of a truck system, it might be better to mention the other functions in the coal town article rather than to start a company store article. It would be worth starting a company store article if we had enough information about all types of company stores/towns, but someone would have to do quite a bit of research about the other types of company towns before starting the article to keep it balanced, and even then it still wouldn't be worth starting if most of the other company towns only had stores to support a truck system. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 13:52, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent and I CAN Do that after I get home and dig out a few books....MUCH appreciated. Trying to keep neutral, trying to define before I interpret.Coal town guy (talk) 14:11, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I wanted to say thank you for finding and adding pictures for a number of North Dakota NRHP sites, including one or more edits directly at List of RHPs in ND. And for your starting a number of ND NRHP articles, too. I'm curious if some/all of the pics might be your own, you don't have to say of course. As you've seen, I've started a bunch more ND NRHP articles and have included the pics you linked. USA Superfluous, need some help

[edit]

Hey- Quick question. In all of the articles I am creating in KY and WV, I am noticing a number of edits by a person removing United States as they state Having Hazard County, Kentucky, United States, makes USA Superfluous and then they tell me about a standard. Thats cool, WHAT standard? I have requested the standard or its location and the "reply" is more edits. Personally, I do not mind the edits. However, its piss poor form to transmit an edict and then not bother to give a reference or direction because I need to either "suck it up" or "figure it out". If it were me, I would try as your example has shown as well. SO, in the effort of assuming good faith, do you know where this reference is? MUCH appreciated. My apologies for the churlish nature of the post but I do not mind rules, we need them, its edicts and no reasoning Coal town guy (talk) 13:02, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've ran into this issue in multiple forms in the past. There are certain editors who will either delink United States from the first sentence of community articles, or remove it entirely. The policy for delinking is usually WP:OVERLINK, which says major geographic features should not be linked; I disagree with the policy in this case, but consensus is probably against me and I don't feel that it's worth debating. I've never seen the policy which says that the United States should be removed entirely from lead sentences, though, and I think it's a bad idea. Adding United States is helpful for foreign readers who don't know all of the states, especially for the less prominent states such as KY and WV. I'd rather work on more productive things than get into a fight over it, but as far as I know there's no policy or good reason for removing United States/USA from the lead. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 13:27, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Much appreciated, I agree with you as well. I did an interview on BBC Radio and they are most appreciative of having Country names with place names as well. Oh well.Coal town guy (talk) 13:40, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Providence, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina

[edit]

Hi I came across Providence, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina at the dab page of Providence, North Carolina. According to GNIS-there are several communities named Providence within Mecklenburg County. This is confusing. Could you please take a look? Many thanks-RFD (talk) 11:21, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is an odd one. Both entries are pointing to roughly the same area and are probably referring to the same place. The only problem is that place is now well within the Charlotte city limits and is no longer an unincorporated community. Based on the number of places called "Providence" in the area I suspect it's either a neighborhood or at least has some history as an independent community, but I unfortunately can't find any sources to back that up. So for now I'd say to leave it as a red link until someone who knows its history better can write an article. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 11:44, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi-One of the Lieutenant Governors of Iowa, John Herriott was born in Herriottsville, Pennsylvania. It is not listed on the GNIS. Is it a ghost town? It is a historical question mark. Thank you-RFD (talk) 12:25, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

RFD, its in Allegheny County near South Fayette. I believe its an older community (pre civil war), but not a ghost town per seCoal town guy (talk) 12:33, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I personally do not think that these links should be in the title when they can be put into an external links section. In addition to that Opera 12.01 Build 1532 for Linux i386 has issues when I try to use WikiMiniAtlas with those links in place. – Allen4names (IPv6 contributions) 18:48, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The KML links are in the title for the same reason coordinates are in the title; it provides a quick link to the map so readers don't have to read through the entire article to see where the route is. WikiMiniAtlas sort of does the same thing, but since it doesn't label other roads (or a whole bunch of other features) and has no satellite coverage, the other two links are going to be more useful for most people. (Granted, it would be nice if there were more mapping options like there are for coordinates, but I don't know how technically feasible that is.) As for the issue with Opera, I don't know what's causing that. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:27, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If it were just the links I would leave them alone. I have posted a comment at Template talk:Attached KML but I don't think I have got a responce yet. BTW, I prefer to keep discussions on a single talk page so please use {{Talkback}} instead of splitting the discussion. – Allen4names (IPv6 contributions) 04:36, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Coal Scrip fact and neutrality???

[edit]

Hey- Need your keen eye. As you know I created an artcile on coal scrip. I actually submitted it for approval because the other article on Company Scrip is at best a lecture I heard ibn grad school on post socialist structuralism.....I madeit a sure thing to quote, verbatim, no original research. Now it has no original research and factual citations tags....So, I edited it. It needs to be expanded oh yes, but, what am I missing?? You observations, good bad or indifferent are welcomedCoal town guy (talk) 01:08, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The original research shouldn't be an issue now that you added the other reference. Based on what the tagger said at his talk page, the neutrality issue seems to be over the word "monopoly". Personally I think that's nitpicking a bit, but it would probably be best if you could find a source that uses the word monopoly to describe the system. OZODOR articles

[edit]

I'd like to ask for your comments on the proposed merger of the recently created South Side Elevated (CTA) into Green Line (CTA). This was done by the same user who created the Ravenswood branch article that was merged into the Brown Line article. Looking at his user page it looks like he's preparing to create two new articles which would really be sub articles of Green Line and Red Line (CTA), neither of which are developed enough to have such pages. I tried explaining to him that we don't create sub pages like that until ready for them, but he either doesn't understand or doesn't care. He also created an article (since speedily deleted) on a fictional Gold Line of his own devising. I ask for your assistance because he seems to be becoming quite irate. He has made some good edits I would rather not be the cause of the loss of a member of the Wiki community. Lost on Belmont 3200N (talk) 03:51, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sinnipee/Sinipee

[edit]

Hi-I came across Sinnipee (also Sinipee) in Grant County, Wisconsin. It was a community near Dubuque, Iowa in the 19th Century before it disappeared. I think Lock and Dam #7 flooded whats left of Sinnipee (Sinipee). The Sinnipee Cemetery is whats left of the community and that is in the GNIS. GNIS spells it as Sinnipee; the Wisconsin Historical Society spells it Sinipee. Several ghost towns website lists Sinnipee, Wisconsin as a ghost town. All of the inbound links to the article used that name, so I assumed it was his common name and used it as the title. I have no objection if you want to move it; I was having a hard time deciding which name to use as the title myself, as I'm not terribly familiar with Arabic names. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 16:17, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's always a tough case when links use different ways to handle a name. I'm in favor of using his full name as that is how the Olympics handled it, with a redirect from his firstname. Bgwhite (talk) 19:47, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fine by me, though I should note that the Olympics weren't terribly good about handling non-Western names. They never used diacritics, and there were a few countries (Mongolia comes to mind) where they did a terrible job of Westernizing the local names. search question

Hey there, I have a good question, which I hope has an easy answer. Is there a way to find articles with no references that are specific to a state or region? Example: How would I find ALL geo stub articles for Kentucky that do not have references??? Many thanks Coal town guy (talk) 19:02, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There's not a perfect way to do that, but category intersection tools are probably your best bet, so you can see which pages are in both a category about a state and Category:All articles lacking sources. This tool works well for me; here's an example search I did so you can see how it works. It can get some extraneous results and it doesn't work for WikiProjects, but it's probably the best option. There are also categories like Category:Unreferenced Kentucky articles, but these are severely underused (the Kentucky one only has four articles in it). TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 22:47, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Category Intersection is FANDAMTASTIC. I have found over 90 KY stubs and 67 WV stubs lacking ANY references. MANY thanks!Coal town guy (talk) 01:57, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question, do you think it would be OK if I post coal tonnage production stats for coal towns? It would not be original research for certainCoal town guy (talk) 00:36, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Seems fine with me. I wouldn't go into too much detail with the statistics, but adding how much each town produced should be OK. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:17, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Neighborhoods, HUH?

[edit]

Hey- MANY thanks for the cross cat query as I have rescued a few articles for certain. BUT, I have a question. MANY articles with zero references are listed as being in a neighborhood. In other words, at one point this place was its own entity and then over time, it got sucked into a larger neighborhood or rather, defined as being in a neighbohood. GNIS does not provide any data oin this. Many had their own PO etc etc

SO, WTF do I do with these are far as defining them? Are they an unincorporated community? OR do I just say, Oh well, its a neighborhood? I have not the slightest of what to do and there are alot of themCoal town guy (talk) 13:45, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It probably depends on the community to a certain extent. I've seen some articles where unincorporated communities were called neighborhoods by mistake, but there are also some where a nearby city annexed the community. The Census Bureau shows city boundaries on its reference maps (go to the "Reference maps" section here and once the map loads check "2010 place" under "Boundaries and Features"), which might be helpful (though their site can be irritating to use in my experience). Can you show me a few of the articles so I know what exactly we're dealing with here? TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 16:49, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Because you asked....:::Sure, how about Penile or Springhurst, Louisville...literally hundreds, lumped in one cat...The cat itself is a list, hamlets, cdps etc etc
Ah, I see what happened here. Louisville's government merged with Jefferson County's in 2003, so all of the unincorporated communities in Jefferson County technically became neighborhoods of Louisville. So if the GNIS says that the place is in Jefferson County, you can just cite that because it means it's a neighborhood of Louisville too (even if the GNIS still says it's unincorporated - they're not always good about updating stuff). I also found this map of Louisville neighborhoods, which only seems to cover Louisville's original neighborhoods but should still be useful.
As an aside, consolidated city-county governments in rural areas are really annoying to deal with. The counties usually have former unincorporated communities that are still notable, but they don't always have navboxes if they're small counties, so you have to be careful that articles don't get orphaned. At least Louisville is big enough that the neighborhoods have their own navbox. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 17:38, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Take in Hollow, WV and possible original research

[edit]

Hey- Quick question. There was a place in WV named Take in Hollow. GNIS states this as a place but not populated. It was, by folks we called Hollow dwellers. I have pics of folks who lived there in their homes at that place and a moden sign showing a road that takes you there. However, I suspect, an article on this place would be original research. Is there a way I could make this a community or should I just be happy with the web page I maintain for the area?Coal town guy (talk) 22:11, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much about the community online (besides your website, of course), but there's probably enough to at least start an article. I've found a couple of newspaper articles which mention it (apparently there was a shooting there in the 50s), so there shouldn't be a problem with verifying that it was a community. The problem I have is I can't pin down its location. The maps I've found only show Take In Ridge, Take In Creek, or Take In Hollow Road, all of which seem to extend from Sullivan to somewhere northeast of Whitby. You know that area way better than I do though, so if you know the location you can probably start an article. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:21, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My grandfather sold the murder weapon to the guilty party before, its quite a tale........Take In changes locations depending on the age of the person from the area, however, there is agreement that it was found by walking from Sullivan WV in Raleigh County. MANY thanks. There are some former Hollow dwellers who will be tickled pinkCoal town guy (talk) 00:28, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greater Eureka Area page (why was it deleted)

[edit]

Hello TheCatalyst31 i'm here because i was wondering why was my page deleted, was there a reason, i live in Eureka, you might in Eureka or nearby, and yes there is a Greater Eureka Area but i think its a urban area, if you want to delete my page, just let me know and i'l edit it, or delete it, well just remember i live in Eureka, i know a lot about Eureka and nearby, i was not not including all of Humboldt County, i was only including Eureka and the surrounding CDP's, i'm really sorry that i made bunch of accounts, and i did not write anything bad on wikipedia, like bad words or anything, and i will be very careful next time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mike3GO (talkcontribs) 03:57, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey- I contacted GNIS and spoke with Lou Yost. As a result, I am starting to send him data on updating GNIS. He was very receptive. ANYWAY, did you have sompe places you wanted to add to GNIS? Is this person "noteable"

[edit]

Via research and public record, it turns out that one of the first recorded settlers of Raleigh County WV was Alexander Halstead. He is buried at the Halstead cemetery at Whitby WV. Is Alexander Halstead a "notable" person. As to his actual life, he was a farmer.IF he is notable, I would add him to the Whitby WV article. YES, I have pics of his gravestoneCoal town guy (talk) 18:10, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find much coverage of Alexander Halstead himself, so he probably wouldn't be considered notable enough for his own article unless you have sources about him that I can't find. That said, if he was one of Whitby's first settlers he should be mentioned in the Whitby article anyway, since he would have played a significant role in its history. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 22:28, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
GROOOOVY. I have written a web page for the Halstead cemetery in Whitby (surprise). His gravestone is wonderfully maintained, although, as fate would have it, the entire cemetery is being redone, apparently, his family found my web page on Whitby and decided to clean the place up. I will of course NOT use my web page as a sourceCoal town guy (talk) 23:29, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed your comment on RFD's talk page and I agree with TheCatalyst31 that you would need several more sources to prove his notability. But his founding of the community does belong on that article. You're right about not using a website that you did. Royalbroil 01:30, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greater Eureka Area issues

[edit]

Hello TheCatalyst31 i heard about this page called the Greater Eureka Area and the Eureka Metropolitan Area, and this guy made bunch of accounts on wikipedia, and this all goes back to somewhere in 2009, he has been making those silly tricks for more than 3 years already, this guy needs to stop, i wonder who is this guy, is he a kid or teenager, or someone under 18, i went through youtube searching for people who got banned from wikipedia, it turns out it was some teenagers, i would think this person is probably a teenager, and i agree with you, this guy needs to stop right now, i live in Eureka so i know how it is, i saw that he vandalized his talk page (as Mike3GO), and this user named Ponyo blocked him with no expiry date, this user needs to stop changing things on wikipedia, and this guy needs to grow up, and i know this person is a male, because i saw other users, and he usually uses this name Alan or Al Villarruel, i would think his name is Alan Villarruel, and this guy is somewhere between 12 and 17 years old, if i knew his parents i would tell his parents to tell him to stop, because this is getting old, very old, do admins have rights to delete accounts of editors of this guy, i would suggest to delete all his accounts, and have him not allowed on wikipedia, or otherwise he can just behave on wikipedia, i agree with you, this guy needs to stop, im not a admin, but you can do something about it, report it to the wikipedia company, or report it to wikipedia officers, like the CEO, Chairman, President, or Founder, because this guy is editing the same old things, and i also been seeing what is the Greater Eureka Area actually and i think it's a urban cluster, which includes Eureka and the surrounding CDPS, such as Myrtletown or Cutten, can i make a page about this urban area, i would like to make the Greater Eureka Area but not as a Metropolitan area, i would like to make the Greater Eureka Area page as a urban cluster, does wikipedia except urban areas on this site. well thank you very much for deleting this guy and if i were a admin, i would do the same thing as you did, and this same guy created a wiki, named Alanpedia, and claims that wikipedia is the worst website, and here is the link [1], and here is a page about all the urban areas in the State of California List of California urban areas and go down to number 59 and it will say about the Greater Eureka Area, and the Greater Eureka Area is a urban area, not a metro area, well thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GeorgeWells (talkcontribs) 03:05, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide/Task forces explains a lot about task forces and how to set them up. The one thing I would caution you about is to make sure you can find other editors who would be willing to join the task force. A whole lot of task forces and even projects have gone inactive, so you really would have to be careful to make sure this one doesn't fizzle out. I wouldn't recommend starting it until you have found a decent number of interested editors. I'm also not entirely sure which project it would be a task force of; WikiProject Cities doesn't seem to do task forces, and it wouldn't fit entirely under any of the geographic ones. If you really want to do a task force, make sure you've thought all this out. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 18:46, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's quite the name. It seems like Idaho also has a couple of streams called Bitch Creek, at least according to the GNIS; I assume one of them runs near the cow camp, though I can't find it on the USGS map of the area (never mind, I found it, it seems to be on the Teton-Fremont county line and not all that close to the cow camp). It would appear as though we now know the name origin of Bitch Creek Cow Camp. Interesting. Sadly, there was a bit of a "concern" about the veracity of the place itself, but this is being ironed out thats to cool calm minds. Maple Works (Mapleworks), Wisconsin

[edit]

Hi-I am looking up information about Mapleworks (Maple Works), Wisconsin which is a ghost town near the village of Granton, Wisconsin in Clark County[2] Orangemike asked me to research this. I would do the article but there is no GNIS. Also there is a book about Wood County, Wisconsin of which I have used and there were mention of lumbering communities like Scranton, Wisconsin, etc. that are no longer in existence. Coalguy and I had talked about Wisconsin's logging/lumbering industry and the fact there were communities that sprung up and then died. You can included lead mining. Any comments?Thanks-RFD (talk) 20:42, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I found this book of Clark County history, which has some info on Mapleworks. The GNIS often doesn't have entries for ghost towns, and I don't know of any general sources for these sorts of places; my advice would be to write an article with the sources you have if you find out about a ghost town, even if we don't have the coordinates yet. From Stub to Start, what does one do?

[edit]

Hey there, a few weeks ago, I had requested that Whitby, West Virginia be upgraded to a start, as opposed to a Stub. Is there another way to get the ball rolling as it were? Many ThanksCoal town guy (talk) 02:53, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Reassessment usually takes some time, since there's a bit of a backlog, so I'd say to just be patient and wait for someone to get to it. I'd do it myself, except I think it's right on the border between start and stub and want another opinion. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:11, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Kalaupapa, Hawaii‎, WHY is this a ghost town???

[edit]

Hey, take a look at Kalaupapa, Hawaii

These folks have an active post office (got their postmark at my home just a few weeks ago), tours etc etc and a set population. Sure, its a leper colony and one of the very very few if only populated leper colonies in the US. Now, I am ok with ghost towns. I have lived in some former towns which are worthy of webster/wiki ghost towns, virtually no population, NO post office and certainly a "tour" would be a drunken bet. SO, help me out here.....if you could PLEASE. WHY is thia place in the category of ghost towns in Hawaii???Coal town guy (talk) 13:36, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also-Please take a look at the Waikolu Valley Molokai article. The Kalawao County, Hawaii template lists this as an unincorporated community. However, the Waikolu Valley Molokai article has no citations and needs lost of work. Thanks again-RFD (talk) 14:12, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
According to the article on ghost towns, a ghost town does not have to be uninhabited. See Virginia City, Montana, and Scenic, South Dakota has, or had, an open post office in 2011. However, its population has significantly decreased, and the economy is dependent on tourism. Based on other examples I've seen, Kalaupapa would at least qualify as a semi-ghost town. -happy5214 14:20, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
GROOVY, now a BONUS, Waikolu, the valley and place is classified as Civil in GNIS and within Kalawao County...question, this place was the water supply for Kalaupapa (YES, I have the GNIS document or decision card stating such), I can add the county template, BUT HOW do I call a place "Civil"??Coal town guy (talk) 14:22, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
UPDATE: Waikolu is located in Maui county, and then feeds Kalawao County/Kalaupapa, SO, the county template would need to be MauiCoal town guy (talk) 14:59, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"Civil" is just a GNIS classification for any kind of administrative government division. In this case, it was probably a water supply district, though I can't say for sure. I'm not sure what the proper classification for it would be in the infobox, though. The page also needs to be moved to a different title, though I'm not sure if it should be Waikolu Valley or Waikolu, Hawaii. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:32, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In this specific instance, you would be correct. The GNIS data card has a PDF with exactly that dataCoal town guy (talk) 00:19, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Waikolu Valley Molokai, needs to become Waikolu, Hawaii

[edit]

Hey, per our chats, I think you are 100% on target, can we rename Waikolu Valley Molokai to Waikolu, Hawaii. Otherwise, the valley itself, while very beautiful, is not even listed in GNIS but the Civil place, Waikolu is. Many thanks for putting in alot of listening to a chat about the water supply for a sparsely populated leper colony in the USCoal town guy (talk) 00:18, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been moved to Waikolu, Hawaii. I find these small quirks of geography interesting, so I don't mind the discussion at all. I'm still amazed that a former leper colony that hasn't allowed new residents since 1969 still has more people than one county in Texas. There are 3 Buena Vista communities for Tennessee in GNIS:the first one in Carroll County is no problem. The one in Blount County seems to be in Maryville, Tennessee and I am not sure of Buena Vista Estates in Davidson County. Thanks-RFD (talk) 23:15, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Buena Vista in Carroll County has to be the one with the post office, especially since it's the only one near Jackson. The Buena Vista in Blount County is within Maryville and probably isn't notable. Buena Vista Estates appears to be part of Nashville, though it's hard to say since Nashville and Davidson County have a consolidated government. It's in a suburban area with a bunch of new-looking subdivisions, though, so even if it wasn't part of Nashville proper before the consolidation it probably doesn't have much of a history or identity. I wouldn't worry about writing an article for it. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:14, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you-RFD (talk) 12:03, 28 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pickwick Dam has a GNIS entry as a locale and is marked on the Hardin County highway map as Pickwick Village, so it appears to be an actual community; I went ahead and started its article. 10545 is the ZIP code for Maryknoll, so I redirected Maryknoll, New York to that article. Hey- I thought as an Admin you might want to see this. A person left mea message on my talk page, which was OK. They have started to create redirects to all of my pages. It's been done for all of the incorporated places, and it's useful for people who search by postal abbreviations, so I'd say it's pretty good. Okay-please take a look at the Oneida, Wisconsin article; the GNIS number: 1583863 is for the the Town of Oneida not the community. The community GNIS is: 1570830 and has the community in Brown&Outagamie Counties. Part of the community is in the town of Oneida in Outagamie County; the other part is in the Village of Hobart in Brown County. That gets complicated since Hobart, Wisconsin is incorporated. Iam not sure how to correct this. Thank you-RFD (talk) 21:32, 30 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I updated everything in the infobox for Oneida so it refers to the community rather than the town. As far as it being in two counties, as of 2000 Oneida was split between the town of Oneida and the town of Hobart, at least according to the Census Bureau's map. After Hobart incorporated, half of Oneida became part of Hobart and half was left unincorporated, so Oneida is now both a neighborhood and an unincorporated community. I'm fine with leaving the introduction the way the article has it now, though I'd also be fine with putting a bit more emphasis on the part in Hobart. Hi-in Nyttend's zipcode directory-I came across Duck River, Tennessee. There was a historical post office there. There is no unincorporated community named Duck River, Tennessee. Also there are 5 or 6 unincorporated communities in Tennessee named Grandview including the one with the zipcode. Thanks again-RFD (talk) 11:15, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ubet Montana

[edit]

I am working with a few folks on Ubet Montana. Question for you: Is the Post Office of a town, the "defining structure" of its name? There is a loong twisted history, but the bottom line is, Ubet, became Judith Gap and Judith Gap, along with its PO in GNIS are located in Wheatland County. Can we move the article for Ubet to Wheatland County?? Here is the article which needs work, in question: Ubet, MontanaCoal town guy (talk) 13:34, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Judith Gap was a railway stop, named after Ubet, the famous stage stop; Ubet's old site is about five miles away from Judith Gap (or at least, the old Ubet Cemetery is 4.8 miles from Judith Gap), and in another county. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:42, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Orange Mike, I am with you, BUT we are now looking at 3 counties. We could just say that the place borders a few, or would that be incorrect. We have Fergus, Jusith Basin and Wheatland, I thought that if we could at least get one county for say the PO, we could then note that this place has "pieces" in 3 counties....Otherwise, we need to agree on a set of coordinates so we can at least get a map of the place. What say you? I took the liberty od quoting the Judith Gap Po description :"Opened as Ubet 10/03/1881 and closed 2/29/1904. Reestablished 8/01/1908 and name changed to Judith Gap 10/08/1908."

Coal town guy (talk) 13:47, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE Garneill was a train station, not necessarily the town, though it too was called Ubet...and in Fergus CountyCoal town guy (talk) 13:58, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
According to the articles in Progressive Men of Montana and the WPA Montana book, first there was Ubet: a stage stop in what was then Fergus County, and is now Judith Basin County, with its own post office (for which Augustus Barrows came up with the name "U-Bet"). Later there was a station opened a few miles away, initially called "Ubet" after the famous stage stop, later renamed "Garneill"; and then another train station, initially called "Ubet" for the same reason, later renamed "Judith Gap". According to the coordinates for the Ubet Cemetery, Judith Gap is about 4.8 miles from where Ubet used to be. Don't get confused by the fact that Fergus County has been split up several times: Judith Basin was formed from western Fergus County in 1920, after Ubet had apparently withered away with the passing of the stagecoach era, and Wheatland was created about the same time, in part from Meagher County (where Barrows' original Sawmill Gulch was located). It seems clear that Ubet (now completely gone), Garneill (apparently ditto) and Judith Gap are three different places in the same remote area. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:10, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Given that Judith Gap seems to have taken the ecological niche which Ubet once filled, I think the database you took the P.O. information from, considered the "new Ubet"/Judith Gap as the successor to the old Ubet station at the stage stop settlement a few miles away: the clientele were bound to be the same folks. And the account in the WPA book of Garneill makes it clear that Garneill in its heyday was divided into three rival sub-settlements! --Orange Mike | Talk 14:14, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
HMMMMMM, SO, we could get the place in Wheatland County, notate that it has pieces in 3 counties AND OF COURSE, notate the source you quoted....piece if cake. Does that sound good? I think this cool stuff, we spent a few hours on the water supply to a US leper colony, so, Ubet, is a walk in the tri county park....as it wereCoal town guy (talk) 14:39, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But "pieces in three counties" is contrary to fact. This is, as I said, one place which originated the name, and two others which briefly bore the same name, but rapidly saw it changed to their own names. The WPA book on Montana can be read online pretty easily: do a search for "Ubet, Montana" with "Garneill". (I don't think any of these places are/were in the present-day Fergus County.) --Orange Mike | Talk 15:14, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ooops, I see. So, within GNIS, what coordinates would more closely reflect reality?? Given, that YES, the WPA data is probably the most accurate. Once we get consensus, we can get this place a map, which , IMO, would help ALOTCoal town guy (talk) 15:19, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Note=I started an article for Garneill, Montana. According to GNIS-the community is in Fergus County, Montana-thanks-RFD (talk) 15:36, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So according to the GNIS, Garneill is in present-day Fergus County, and its coordinates place it right on the western border of the county. The area still has a grain elevator and a few homes, so it's not entirely gone. According to the WPA book, the original Ubet was three miles west of Garneill (not east like the article said), which would put it in present-day Judith Basin County. Judith Gap is clearly in Wheatland County just south of the Fergus/Judith Basin border, but very much distinct from the other two places. So these are three different places, all of which were called Ubet at some point but none of which are the same settlement. Does that seem right? TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:12, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That seems about right. Additionally, the Judith Gap, the post office, has the former name of...Ubet. SO, where in GNIS, is the data, that most accurately describes, Ubet? When we get an agreed upon area, I can insert a map and the world will be a better place, for Ubet, that is AND thanks for the good eyes on Garneill!Coal town guy (talk) 00:58, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The original Ubet doesn't seem to be in the GNIS, which isn't too surprising given how long ago it was abandoned. Probably the best way to get the exact location of Ubet would be to find a map from the time of its existence, though I don't know where one of those would be. Hi-Rome, Tennessee, Romeo, Tennessee, Hickman, Tennessee, Shawanee, Tennessee, Lone Mountain, Tennessee, Eagan, Tennessee, Egan, Tennessee, Pruden, Tennessee. It appears Pruden is also in Bell County, Kentucky so that one might need some work-thank you-RFD (talk) 20:56, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pruden looks like it's a bit confusing. The GNIS has two entries for Pruden; #1310724 lists Claiborne County, Tennessee as the primary county and Bell County, Kentucky as the secondary county, and #501387 lists Bell County first and Claiborne County second. The coordinates for both are in roughly the same place but on different sides of the state line, and it looks like they refer to the same community based on the satellite imagery. Both the Tennessee and Kentucky county highway maps show Pruden; the Kentucky one is a bit offset from the state line, but not so much that it's a distinct place. So I think they're the same community, despite the GNIS having two entries. Does that seem right to you? TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 03:21, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that Pruden is the same community in 2 different states. You should go ahead and redo the Pruden article. Thanks-RFD (talk) 13:22, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I look at both GNIS for Pruden again-Pruden is the same community in two different states-thanks-RFD (talk) 14:03, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rat Salad isn't the only song article from Paranoid I'm trying to get deleted. Electric Funeral and Hand of Doom also fail notability and that only 5 out of 8 of the songs on Paranoid warrant articles. All except Rat Salad, Electric Funeral, and Hand of Doom. --Mrmoustache14 (talk) 03:33, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I understand, and I'm only trying to get 2 (MAYBE 3) of the articles deleted, so I put them on the AfD list instead of a proposed deletion. We'll see where it goes from there. Since one article is an unsourced stub that can't be expanded (Rat Salad) and the other article is just a flowery biased description (Electric Funeral) both of which prove no notability, I think the editors will take my side. I'm sorry If I came off rude, it's just this other user keeps opposing my assertions without a reason except for the fact he probably is a huge Sabbath fan. Thank you for suggesting AfD though! --Mrmoustache14 (talk) 04:38, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi-I have a zipcode for Lowland, Tennessee: 37778, but no GNIS. There is The Lowlands, Tennessee listed but I am not sure if that is the sameone. Thanks-RFD (talk) 00:52, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Lowland is an interesting one. The GNIS lists Lowland as a locale in Hamblen County and says the post office is in the same area (it's definitely not the same as The Lowlands, since that's in Putnam County). Lowland is also on the Hamblen County highway map, so it appears to be a community of some sort. The odd thing is that it seems to be more of an industrial center than a population center. The post office is apparently closed, but it was located in the middle of a fibers plant which is also closed now, and apparently replaced by a hospital. I also looked through Google news archives and found a bunch of stories about industrial plants opening and closing in Lowland. It's probably still a community and in any case looks to be notable, but it doesn't appear to be a typical community. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:21, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi-Bybee, Tennessee, Heiskell, Tennessee. Would you please look at Wasp, Tennessee? The article states Wasp is a ghost town but the GNIS staes it is a populated place. A little confusing. Also I decided not to start an article about The Lowlands, Tennessee. It looks like it is located in Cookeville, Tennessee. Thanks-RFD (talk) 11:31, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wasp looks like a ghost town to me. It's not on the Cocke County highway map anymore, and the satellite view of the area doesn't show any sign of a settlement, plus one of the sources (which is a dead link now) refers to "ruins". I agree with you on The Lowlands, it looks like it's part of Cookeville. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 11:56, 15 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Guild and Haletown appear to be the same place; I'll work on the article. I'm not sure if Tipton's unincorporated, though. It looks like Atoka annexed it at some point, so it's probably a neighborhood now. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:15, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You were right and I was wrong

[edit]

I hate being wrong. I'm used to being the smartest person in the room and it is very humbling for me when I am wrong about something because I'm not athletic, and when it comes to brains or brawn, brains is whats i gots. This doesn't mean that I won't nominate unicorporated townships for Afd ever again, but it does mean that I won't make the assumption that they can't be sourced. If there is one thing I hate more than wasting time, is being the cause of wasted time. (Self Trout) this is particularly frustrating when I can't get autopatrolled rights because I'm shy of my 50 created pages on one hand, while on the other hand I'm accused by some of being a nazi-like deletionist. It doesn't matter how many years I've been editing, it seems that when it comes to Wikipedia you are only as good as your last few edits, agreed? Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I appreciate your efforts, and I think you are a really cool person. Here's a barnstar:

1)I believe its a copy of a published work 2)UNLESS it can be better referenced, its ALMOST utter nonsense 3)My GG monther was one, BUT, again, I do NOT belive this to be an "encyclopedic" article

WHAT do you think??Coal town guy (talk) 03:19, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The topic is probably notable, but the article as it stands is terrible. Most of it is either copied from or written very closely to the second reference, which is itself heavily biased against the medical profession. The original author seems to also have issues with physicians; the whole business about physicians driving granny women out of business sounds like some sort of "modern science is terrible" diatribe. IMO pretty much everything after the introduction needs to be taken out, the intro needs to be rewritten, and hopefully someone can find neutral sources. Hi In looking at Nyttend's Zipcode Directory I am having some problems with several entries: The Gnis has no entry for McMan, Oklahoma 73444 just for the PO and the Gnis for Houlka, Mississippi 38850 mentions that Houlka, Mississippi was incorporated by the town of New Houlka, Mississippi> Any help and advice would be appreciaed. Thank you for your service to Wikipedia. RFD (talk) 14:00, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Houlka and New Houlka appear to be the same place, so I redirected Houlka to New Houlka. After a lot of searching, I found that McMan is an alternate name for Dundee, Oklahoma. It also apparently hasn't had a post office since 1966, and the USPS says ZIP code 73444 is actually Hennepin, Oklahoma. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:47, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WV County Page question

[edit]

Hey there- On several main WV County pages is a list of communities and then, in the county template, the communities are listed again. HOWEVER, my issue is as follows: In Fayette and Wood Counties, the number of communities (thank you thank you) has grown and listing them on the main county page would be at best, bad formatting.....Do you think it would be OK to indicate that the list if partial, as in Unincorporated Comminities (partial) and then tell them to look in the template below (Partial list, see county box below for full list)????? Please do let me know. As Greenbrier, Kanawha, Raleigh Wood and Fayette would be AT BEST problematic.........OR, should we just remove the freaking list from the County page??Coal town guy (talk) 15:41, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It seems fine to just have a partial list for counties like that with 100+ communities; we probably don't need every place in those lists if we say that they're all in the template. As long as we mention the more significant places (CDPs, places with post offices, places that had post offices until recently, etc.), it should be OK. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 22:07, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lima Center, Wisconsin

[edit]

Hi-I had to revert changes to the Lima Center, Wisconsin article. An editor kept changing it to the village (town) of Lima Center that does not exist. Lima Center is located in the town of Lima, Rock County, Wisconsin. I left a Welcome! template and a comment at the editor's talk page and a comment at the Lima Center, Wisconsin article. I am assuming good faith. I suggested to the editor to read Political subdivisions of Wisconsin especially about towns and unincorporated communities. Thank you again-RFD (talk) 12:57, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, Lima is definitely still a town, and Lima Center is still unincorporated. The editor probably just isn't entirely familiar with how towns and villages work in Wisconsin, but that's a pretty common mistake. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:51, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WV Help!

[edit]

Hey- I have attemp[ted to contact an editor in good faith concerning Beckley, West Virginia and Bradshaw. Specifically, Beckley has a cat of Populated places established in 1838. In 1838, Beckley, was a piece of paper. It was not until some 10+ years later that the place had streets (mud paths) much less permanent settlers in the city proper. Should we have this category there?

Bradshw was a total copy of an article, which I removed the copied material after citing the url where they basically, copied the whole freaking page with zero refs..."Jewel" of WV, majestic mountains, friendly people etc etc, uh...NO. At least not in Wiki terms. My contention is WTF is that article, a start?? Should it even be a start. Hell I added the zip code, HOW could you have a start there? ANY look see or comment you could provide would of course be welcomedCoal town guy (talk) 13:52, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The link you gave for Bradshaw copied Wikipedia, rather than the other way around. They have a "link to full article" that links to Wikipedia at the bottom of their page, and they copied the geography and demograpics sections that have been in the article since 2002. That said, none of the stuff you removed was referenced and a lot of it was unencyclopedic, so I don't see a good reason to put it back. The article at least has the geography and demographics sections, so I'm fine with calling it a start.
As for Beckley, if what you say is correct it was legally established in 1838, which I would say counts as being established in 1838. Though that date doesn't have a reference either... TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:54, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have this feeling that the "data" they copied is in a McDowell county travel brochure, I think I have a copy in my shelf at the house, IF I find it, I will of course have a chuckle. As to the establishment date of Beckley have no reference, I will fix that. I take it for granted that it would have a reference, hmmm. MANY thanks for seeing that Jwel of the coal belt and friendly folks do not an encyclopedic article make.Coal town guy (talk) 00:44, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Little help please

[edit]

Hey- I want to get the list of WV counties to FA list staus. I think its ready. Take a look [here] and tell me what you think. I will of course be seeking a few opinionsCoal town guy (talk) 23:16, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So I looked at some of the other featured lists of counties to see what they look like. This mostly taught me that the featured lists of counties are very inconsistent in what they include, but it did give me a few ideas about the intro:
  • There should probably be some more history of how the counties were formed. It doesn't have to be that long, but it should be more than two sentences. It should probably say a bit more about the pre-statehood history of the counties (since that's fairly important for WV), and it should also mention how the counties became part of what was then Virginia. For instance, was the whole state split up into large counties early on, or were new counties gradually added as Virginia spread out?
  • You might want to mention the largest and smallest counties; some lists, like Alabama and Tennessee do this, but others don't. Probably your call.
  • I assume this is temporary, but the map shouldn't be that big.
  • The article could probably use a copyedit before it gets nominated. I might just do that myself if I have time.
  • All of the data in the table looks good now that it has references.
Overall the article looks like it's pretty close to a FL. Everything that needs to be in the table is there and referenced, which is the most important thing. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:37, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for the help thus far! I took a good look at the featured lists...WOW, talk about NO standard......anyway, I think its best if I put a "date of passing" for the individuals who have been honored by having a county named after them. AFTER that, a copy edit and a few details might make this a featured list...YAY...Of note: take a look at the New Jersey County List. Stotesbury political

[edit]

I have some pics (good ones, mine, public etc etc) that will explain the political side of St Johns at Stotesbury. LOOOONG ago, in 2002, coal field history folks like myself were the red headed bastard step kids that everyone did not like, ESPECIALLY in small towns that are, to be kind, aesthetically challenged.....St Johns was the black church, all wood multiple stories, look on Flickr, look for a user named whitbywv, you will see. I have a pic of the foundation stone. They let the church go to collapse, preserving it would have been an attraction, because, the church was ...stunning. The white church, also nice, BUT NOT stunning still has services. It is perfectly maintained. It has no graveyard. The church at St Johns, had a cemetery, a black cemetery, rather historic, and NOT well maintained. Many of us, would watch the place. We babysat it and shared notes on Skype, or Yahoo. The collapse was not a surprise. The only thing I will say, in my own encyclopedic fashion is that I took photos inside before the collapse, I did video, and, its, very odd, some things, you just cant explain, that was an odd placeCoal town guy (talk) 15:46, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at your photos; the place looked pretty run down even before it collapsed. Shame that it wasn't better maintained. By the way, any chance you could change the license on your Flickr photos to a Creative Commons license so we could use them here? It looks like they'd work well in the articles, and there's a nice tool which can just move them over from Flickr if they have the right license. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:20, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a way they could remain on Flickr? There are some folks who need to see them...I owe them alot, and they lived there....Coal town guy (talk) 01:11, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, they always remain on Flickr. The tool just copies them so they're on Commons too. It's really useful, there are a lot of people who post photos on Flickr under a free license but don't think of putting them on Wikipedia, so I just upload them. See this picture, for instance. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:26, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This I can do, I just need to change the license on Flickr?.......pics preserve places, very cheaply. OF note, I an receiving lots of help on the WV cvounty list.....many thanks againCoal town guy (talk) 01:31, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, just change the license on Flickr to either Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) or Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike (CC-BY-SA). Either one is acceptable for Wikipedia. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:34, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Beckley WV was a piece paper after all

[edit]

Hey- The cool thing about trying to get the FL status out of WV counties is that I am able to peruse my library at home with gusto.......SO, I actually found the historical reference that in 1838, Beckley WV was a piece of paper and folks got their jollies laughing their collective posteriors off at Alfred Beckley, the founder.....Beckley, West Virginia. Ironically, I so saw my Beckley Centennial medal and posted it to the Beckley page as well. Articles

[edit]

Hi-Would you please take a look at the Peabody Preserve (Tarrytown, New York) article? It was copied from the Schmeeckle Reserve (Stevens Point, Wisconsin) article. I am not sure why the editor did it except maybe experimenting. The Peabody Preserve article came up on the new articles section at WP Wisconsin. Thanks again-RFD (talk) 20:47, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I removed everything from the Peabody Preserve article except the one sentence that wasn't copied. I'm not sure it's notable either, but I found a couple of articles about it so I won't nominate it for deletion right now. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:35, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Wisconsin Question

[edit]

I am as they say, rather ignorant of Wisconsin. HOWEVER, do you or RFD have any desire to have the List of Counties in Wisconsin be a FL??? I would be willing with date formats and anything else. I was reading the US County page, its rather close to being a featured category which I thought would be cool. Try not to laugh too hardCoal town guy (talk) 22:14, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would be open to a list of counties in Wisconsin. I never could figure out graphs, many of the templates, infoboxes on Wikipedia-many thanks-RFD (talk) 22:33, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can create a clickable county map, I can get the dates (year ranges) up to WP:DATE standard, after that, I would need a Wisconsinite (sorry if thats not the term) to tell me who the History hero of the state is, and from there refs and of course, the lead paragraphs could be up to you 2 or whomever would be up for that IF thats a thing you want. I figured since I just went through the process, I can helpCoal town guy (talk) 22:38, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have the time to work on a FL right now, but it's something to consider for the future. If I did do a list of counties, it would probably be List of counties in Illinois actually, since I probably have better access to historical resources for Illinois than Wisconsin. But if I do work on that at some point, I'd definitely appreciate your help. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 22:55, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Could you find some more counties...WOW.....I will make the image maps and make sure both are WP:DATE compliant. After finally getting WV up to par, I really wanted to give back to the community as many of the edits and standards are raised. Let me know when either of you want to tackle a specific state. Coal town guy (talk) 01:02, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Coal town guy, I could be that Wisconsinite (you got the term right)! I would love to be your student. I never was able to get anything up to Featured Level despite my attempts. I added the article to my watchlist. Let's discuss the details of what you need help with on the talk page. I've been to all 72 counties and have added photos from dozens of them to Wikipedia/Commons. Royalbroil 03:34, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
YOU DA MAN. I have made the list WP:Date compliant, and am in the process of making the county map clickable. I think the county map should be a bit larger, I can play with that too. As far what needs to be done to make it a FL, I can get a list together by tomorrow. I will say that the recent FL for WV taught me that they have raised the expectations of ANY list AND we have some really cool people here who know formatting far far better than I ever will. The list is dam good, the only things left are not that hard, BUT I would rather have a pair or 2 of Wisconsin eyes as it were. MANY thanks for the heads up. Last but never least, if I screw the pooch because I do not know Wisconsin history, please accept my apologies nowCoal town guy (talk) 03:40, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Categorie issues at AfD

[edit]

Sorry if I caused more work for you using HotCat to categorize debates. After a few times I caught on that I wasn't doing it right. I looked around at DelSort but didn't see a how to guide for doing it manually so I didn't know where to start out cleaning up my mess. It looks like a tool is necessary to do it more easily, and I will look in to getting one so I can (actually) help out. By fixing my mistakes you helped me figure out how to do it correctly. Again, thanks for fixing my mistakes and helping me do the same!Synchronism (talk) 10:43, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. You actually don't need a tool to categorize the debates; there's a template for it near the top of each AfD which looks like {{REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD|X}}. To categorize the debate, put the appropriate letter from here in place of the X. I can see why it's confusing, since that's probably the strangest name we have for a commonly-used template. Something cool and WV

[edit]

Hey- Take a look here. Remember when I said that in May something really cool would happen? Funny thing about coal scrip, WV has the largest diversity of its issuers (LOTS OF COAL TOWNS). Anyway, in May, via alot of very cool people, I get to run a scrip machine. An actual, from the day, machine that issued scrip. I believe it is one of 2 actual functioning original machines. I would love to expand the article link I provided and eventually, make it GA. HOWEVER, I would need a WV history person who might find this interesting. I already let Caponer know but he is in a move right now. I thought you might have some input later about how to build the articleCoal town guy (talk) 15:37, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bloomfield, Walworth County, Wisconsin

[edit]

Hi-I just found out that part of the town of Bloomfield, Walworth County, Wisconsin was incorporated as a village in early 2012. Some of the recent information mention that sections of the town of Bloomfield, Walworth County, Wisconsin could be annex to other incorporated areas like Genoa City, Wisconsin. To add to the confusion the village and town are located at the Bloomfield Town Hall. There is a possibilty the town of Bloomfield in Walworth could be dissolved. Also the CDP of Pell Lake, Wisconsin was incorporated into the new village and the Pell Lake Sanitary District was dissolved as a result. Any assistance and help in sorting this would appreciated. I will let User: Rockfang known. Rockfang has help out with Wisconsin articles about sections of Wisconsin town incorporating into villages. Thanks-RFD (talk) 12:47, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for starting the Village of Bloomfield article. As of right now there is no village website. The existence of the Town of Bloomfield will be resolved in some matter. RFD (talk) 23:27, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Census Bureau's Geographic Changes page explains a lot of the boundary changes. Aside from starting the village article, I updated the Town of Bloomfield and Pell Lake articles. I also updated Powers Lake; apparently the Walworth County part of Powers Lake got incorporated into the village. I should probably check if North Bloomfield, Wisconsin is part of the village or not. The Town of Bloomfield doesn't seem to have a working website anymore either. We'll see what happens to the rest of it, I guess. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:30, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Update: It looks like North Bloomfield is just north of the village, so it's fine for now. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:33, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the update. I assume it will still be a while before the village officially exists, especially since it doesn't seem to have a name yet. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:15, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
About Harrison, my research confirmed that there used to be an unincorporated community named Harrison at the location listed at Harrison (community), Calumet County, Wisconsin. I was highlighted by a church which was torn down almost 100 years ago. There still are some houses so I think the article should remain as it is. I knew about the new village passing the referendum but I didn't start an article on the village. It should have a separate article since the village will be miles away from the unincorporated community. I suppose since it passed, someone could start an article on the upcoming community. It's beyond crystal ball. There should be some reliable references but I decided to wait. I thought I heard that the name is going to be Harrison. I don't know exactly which part of the town is becoming a village. Royalbroil 03:46, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The new village could be in place by April 2, 2013-Wisconsin Spring Election. The Wisconsin Secretary of State Doug LaFollette would certified the new village. The Catalyst31 is right we don't know the name of the new village yet. The Town of Harrison website provides information about the incorporation and has a map of where the new village is located. You have to through several links to get to it. It would be under Incorporation Presentation-37 pages. Thanks again-RFD (talk) 10:58, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wisconsin on my mind

[edit]

Hey - Take a look here. When the county origin states unorganized territory, what is that AND is there a book I can look that up in??Coal town guy (talk) 00:42, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Unorganized territory" just means the county was formed from land that wasn't part of a county until then. I'm not sure where to verify that though; as I mentioned, I don't really know where to find good sources for Wisconsin history. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:28, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I found this: History, Winnebago County, Wisconsin: Its Cities, Towns, Resources, People ISBN 1241509107. Pages 175-177 for Winnebago County I like this history alot. It will be a tad harder as far as verification. Please do correct me if you see an issue. Coal town guy (talk) 01:32, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like it's a good resource for that county at least. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:38, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
AND there is another table for the renamed counties, of which 2 have been found, do you know of any others???Coal town guy (talk) 13:52, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know of any others myself. There are probably only 2, but I don't know the history well enough to say for sure. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 16:44, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Village of Harrison, Calumet County, Wisconsin

[edit]

Hi-I am still watching for developments on the new village of Harrison in Calumet County, Wisconsin. According to the Town of Harrison website the Wisconsin Circuit Court order for the incorporation referendum was to be for the Village of Harrison. The new Village of Harrison is in the Darboy, Wisconsin area. The Secretary of State Doug LaFollette needs to certify the incorporation papers. I am still not sure about the unincorporation community of Harrison which is located elsewhere in Calumet County. I would like to get back to Nyttend's Zipcode Directory. The only comment on the Forestville merger is one editor who says they will probably eventually merit separate articles, but they also said that a year ago and still haven't really expanded either. It does seem like Forestville would fit in the state park article, but given how much else there is to say about the state park it also makes sense to keep them separate. I can see this going either way, so I think I'm going to leave them separate for now. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 20:32, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks as always-RFD (talk) 20:55, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An additional thought: there is precedent in Wisconsin about communities in Wisconsin with multiple names. In Douglas County, Wisconsin you have the city, village, and town of Superior all within a few miles of each other and the city and village of Pewaukee. You will probably have the town of Harrison, the village of Harrison, and the unincorporated community of Harrison is the same county-Calumet County. The unincorporated community is not located in the new village of Harrison. Thanks again-RFD (talk) 21:14, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fin Leavell

[edit]

Hello TheCatalyst31! I have been a daily user of Wikipedia for almost a decade now. I haven't started many pages (actually, I can't even remember if I've actually created one before tonight!), but I have tried my best to keep it "clean & correct" around various articles. I've never marked any pages for deletion or questioned the authors for their sources.. as everything I've ever "needed" from Wikipedia I could verify from an outside sources (kudos! for we have an amazing resource here...). Tonight I started the article Fin Leavell who is one of my -and many others - favorite musicians of all time. He has released countless album internationally and is known by quite a large audience. 30 minutes after I saved the page, I got flagged for notability and sources. While I can see how the article could be confusing to someone who didn't have a lot of knowledge on the music scene, I would just like some help trying to fix the article. I can't tell if the person who flagged me is a new user or not? And this is the first time I'm using a talk page - I feel way more comfortable asking you a question since I see a whole bunch of questions below me. Thank you and I appreciate any help that could be given. I also wanted to note that the article isn't 100% completed. I did plan on filling in some juicy details about performances on the Cartoon Network, at the Playboy Mansion, music contributed to the Playboy video game, music contributed to movie and television soundtracks, touring mates, producers connected to him, and additional notability information. I just couldn't do it tonight. Again, I hope you can help. Thank you :) Ilikesealife (talk) aka Melody Letecia

The Village of Harrison, Calumet County

[edit]

Hi-I started to put some notes together for the new article about the village of Harrison in Calumet County, Wisconsin. I am waiting for the GNIS to come through and the village election on April 23. The unincorporated community of Harrison in Calumet County still needs to be change. Hopefully I would like to get back to Nyttend's Zipcode Directory and start more articles about communities that have zipcodes. Right now I have been working on US state legislators especially those who died. Thanks-RFD (talk) 16:20, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GNIS

[edit]

Hi-I was wondering if you would please contact GNIS about the new village of Harrison in Calumet, Wisconsin. I am not sure if they are aware of the new village. The election for the officers of the new village will be on April 23. Also if GNIS has any idea about the unincorporated community of Harrison (GNIS-1577629). The Town of Harrison is GNIS-1583354. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 20:05, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I told the GNIS folks about the new village and asked them whether the other Harrison should be marked as historical. I'll tell you when I get a response. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 22:15, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WV county routes, a goody, I think

[edit]

Hey there- I have a good question for you that I think you can easily answer and I have no clue about (surprise). A few years ago, while taking pics at Jenkinjones WV, I noted that while I used an old topo map to walk about, my gps and google maps kept saying, County Route 8 etc etc, SO, I took a look see recently here on Wikipedia......In Anawalt there is a CR8/2 and in Jenkinjones, there is a CR8/3.......As these are in McDowell County, I took a look at CR8 here for WV, no mention of McDowell....what am I missing??? How can I help or do I need to do anything????Coal town guy (talk) 17:36, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In general Wikipedia doesn't have much coverage of county roads unless they're particularly notable. Most county roads tend to be short local roads that aren't as well traveled as state highways, so most of the time the only source you can find for a county road is the official highway map (and in some states you don't even get that). There are often lists of county roads, but when you can only make the lists by picking every highway out of a map, they often don't exist (I think only 3 counties in WV have lists of their county roads). It would make sense to discuss what county roads pass through a community, though, since they're often the only way to get in and out of a place.
As for CR 8 in particular, I looked up WVDOT's map of McDowell County, and it shows CR 8 as running from WV 84 in Anawalt to the Virginia border southeast of Jenkinjones. It's the main road into Jenkinjones, which would explain why your GPS said you were on it. The map says that CR 8/2 and CR 8/3 are both in Anawalt; I'm not sure where on Wikipedia it says that CR 8/3 goes to Jenkinjones, but that should be corrected. If you have any other questions about road stuff, feel free to ask me. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:17, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
COOLIO. As for Wiki specifically, Jenkinjones Company Store and Offices merely states its CR8. BUT, every map thus far states 8/3. I wanted to update the McDowell County article to reflect CR8 as part of its transportation section. BUT, when I look up CR8 WV here on Wikipedia, it has it in the northernmost part of the state. SO, my quandry is, HOW do I show CR as bering in McDowell County and some how resolve the current CR8 article with refs in the northernmost part of WV?? Is this another CR8, and not the one documented here? I view this as an opportunity to contribute and do alot of updates to roads. ANY help you could provide would be greatCoal town guy (talk) 22:59, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
County routes can be (and usually are) repeated in different counties, so I imagine that there are a whole lot of CR 8's in WV. When you mention a route in the northernmost part of the state, are you referring to West Virginia Route 8? Because that's a state route (and as far as I can tell, the only route numbered 8 in WV with its own article). State routes are part of a different system than county routes, so there shouldn't be any conflict between the two. You can probably add the important county highways to the Transportation section of the McDowell County page; if you start to do this for other highways/counties, you should probably take a look at the official maps, which should have all of the county highways. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:39, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
AHA, got it. There are indeed mu7ltiple CR8, in WV...BUT the State Route 8, TOTALLY different. COOLCoal town guy (talk) 00:03, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Category:National Register of Historic Places in Missouri by county

[edit]

Thanks for creating and populating this category! I created several pages to go into it but completely forgot to create it until well after you'd done it. Nyttend (talk) 02:14, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. By the way, do you have any idea what to do about the Missouri list in general? It's the only state besides Texas that's split into multiple lists alphabetically, and some of the alphabetical lists (e.g. National Register of Historic Places listings in Missouri, Counties J–K) don't make much sense. I'm thinking of either splitting off every county list or splitting off more of the large ones and merging everything else back into the main list. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:31, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See my comments at Talk:National Register of Historic Places listings in Missouri. I'm in the middle of splitting out all of the counties with five or more listings; the remaining counties have an aggregate total of little more than 100 sites, which is quite doable for a single list. Accordingly, I was planning to merge all of the alphabetical lists into the statewide one. Nyttend (talk) 02:53, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds good to me. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 03:11, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As part of the process, I've added new headers and footers to the existing county pages; they previously had a single sentence and GeoGroupTemplate, plus a few navboxes, while I've added fuller texts (including the number of sites) and a map to the header, and See alsos to the bottom. I don't normally customise this kind of header, but I've done it for St Louis County, since the independent status of St Louis is bound to cause confusion otherwise. Jackson County was also hard: Kansas City has been separated out from the county list (and it's divided into two pieces), but unlike most cities that get their own lists, KC is also in other counties, and unlike multi-county big cities like Columbus OH, Kansas City has sites in multiple counties! I've had to put together a unique page for it, and I'm about to start linking the sublists to each other. Nyttend (talk) 03:59, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know Ohio, but this portion is literally the area I know least; I've not been near Athens since I was in elementary school, and I've only once been near Logan since 2005. Going by the contents of the Wikipedia articles, I'd say that we should expand the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway article; I've changed the Hocking County list to link to it. WV Route 16

[edit]

OK, A few questions sio I do not upset the apple cart. Coal City Road, turns into WV 16 just outside of Amigo, West Virginia. ALSO, Part of 16, is known as Robert C Byrd Drive as you go into Sophia, West Virginia. HOW would I properly indiocate this within the article as I have to date NOT edited a road article yet? I have of course noted this on the WV 16 talk page as well. Coal town guy (talk) 15:50, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Normally each road article has a "Route description" section where you can add details about the road such as the local names. Unfortunately, WV 16 is still a stub, and since it's a 250-mile highway I'm not quite sure how to add the Raleigh County portion without describing the rest of the highway. The best thing I could think to do is add that part to a new "Route description" section and let someone fill in the rest later. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 18:26, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Village of Harrison, Calumet County, Calumet

[edit]

Hi-Many thanks for starting the Spring Prairie, Wisconsin article. Okay on the the new Village of Harrison GNIS came through with this:GNIS-2746307. I had thought of starting the article but you have more experience with such articles that you may want to start it yourself. The unincorporated community of Harrison in Calumet County is apparently the same. How are you doing? I had been working on articles about United States state legislators who died recently. Hopeful, I can get back to Nyttend's zipcode directory. Many thanks as always-RFD (talk) 09:22, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I started an article on the new village and updated the town's article. Unfortunately, the village determination used a different estimate of the town's area, so I couldn't update the town's area. The various Harrisons in Calumet County should probably be disambiguated now; I'll do that part in a bit. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:07, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

IP user and another user hitting Banco WV, they are the same

[edit]

Hey- We have an IP user registered to a school and a user name performing the exact vandalism on Banco WV.........I do not know if locking the article would help as this one is going everywhere. Can we ban the IP if the obvious user is being a sock puppet??Coal town guy (talk) 20:40, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Since the IP is registered to a school district, it's going to be used by a lot of different people, so I wouldn't block it as a sockpuppet. If the vandalism keeps up, of course, they can be blocked for that. The user is the one I'm more concerned about. They appear to have been using the random page button to vandalize things; I had to revert a bunch of their vandalism going back about a month. They hadn't been warned before yesterday and their last edit was constructive, so I won't block them, but I'd still keep an eye on their contributions. Protecting the article won't help with an established user, so I don't think that's necessary right now. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:09, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We have a redirect happy user

[edit]

Hey- A user named Gilliam has done some redirecting that is starting to be rather troubling. We has a redirect on McDowell KY which said it was a CDP. Its not. We had a redirect which deletyed Kettle Island Coal Camp KY, to Kettle Island KY, they are seperate. We also have at last count a few hundred redirects for several communities in WV which seem OK, but some, NOT so muchCoal town guy (talk) 13:27, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So the issue with McDowell is complicated. Mcdowell, Kentucky, and McDowell, Kentucky, are the same place, but that place isn't a CDP. The article for McDowell says it's a CDP because the GNIS added an entry for "McDowell Census Designated Place" even though the Census Bureau doesn't recognize McDowell as a CDP. I attempted to fix the article but another editor reverted me because of the GNIS entry, and we never reached a consensus. Of course the GNIS now says that McDowell isn't a CDP in the listing for the populated place, so it's internally inconsistent. There are a lot of erroneous CDP listings like this, but the only place where these got turned into erroneous Wikipedia articles is in eastern Kentucky. So Gilliam was right to merge in that case, it's just that McDowell, Kentucky needs to be resolved one way or the other.
As for Kettle Island, it seems like a pretty innocent mistake; I almost thought they were the same place until I asked you about it. The rest of Gilliam's edits are constructive so I don't see anything to be worried about. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:03, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

AFC articles

Thanks for processing a number of new articles i have created under the Articles For Creation system. I don't know how to get a report of all my currently outstanding ones there. But I see from messages to my Talk page that several have been declined, and I wonder if you would be willing to take a look at these:

Either way on these, I do appreciate what you have been doing. And it is interesting to see the big task of the AFC editors. Thanks! --doncram 15:44, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually i just figured out that the catscan tool can find the NRHP ones (most) out of my outstanding articles. Running http://toolserver.org/~magnus/catscan_rewrite.php with category= "Pending AfC submissions", with template= "infobox NRHP", and with checkbox in Namespace= for "Wikipedia Talk" checked, currently shows 20 NRHP articles by me. Or here it is in one click.
If it is easy or pleasant for you to evaluate these, feel free. :) --doncram 18:47, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Got your note. I'll try to consider your views expressed. About using a quote vs. paraphrasing, I don't want to argue it but generally there can be different opinions. I do understand the point that if there is straightforward, unoriginal material, then putting it into our own words and not focussing reader attention on a specific quotation is usually better. If there is an unusual assertion, however, or distinctive/special/clever wording, it can be better to quote the distinctive wording and allow the reader to enjoy that (and give credit to the NRHP nomination document author). I have seen others change distinctive quotes down to poor-quality wording that is simply inferior, sometimes changing the meaning even, and other times just settling for generally poor wording. There's a matter of judgment about when a passage is worthy of quoting; my taste/standard may be different than yours. For example, in the Hilda Erickson House article, i thot the newspaper quote about being a "last living pioneer" out of some group was worthy for longer quoting both for clarity about its specific claim, and for its pretty succinct form. I wouldn't want to paraphrase it into something a lot longer to try to keep the same meaning. And when quoting from an NRHP nomination author, I might consider some phrase to be distinctive that you do not view as special. I know I have had that kind of disagreement with another editor before. By the way though, I do agree with your comment about craftsman vs. bungalow in the Erickson article. And though there is not a quality standard in what is required for a starter article, I do value better writing, so I am indeed happy to consider your views however you choose to share them. If you edited an article that I had started, I would notice and consider your specific changes to be feedback about what you think is better, too. --doncram 23:54, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your attention, including questions and comments, to several articles. One small communication thing: i would put a sentence like "It has also been known as Ayer's Rock Pictograph Site, Bob Rabbit's Pictographs and as INY-134 and as INY-105" (which showed redlinks) into an article, then I would follow the redlinks to create the redirects, then I would return to bold them. It's a minor pain not to have the article started already in mainspace, where i could do that. Redirects back to the article, however, would be deleted by a bot, if the article is in AFC space. It saves steps to let them be as redlinks, then fix after it gets to mainspace, but i see that is confusing to reviewers. Another communication/AFC usage issue is how to indicate/provide stuff for a Talk page. Anyhow, thanks v. much for your attention to these. I do hope you enjoy the reviewing and editing and interaction. I am accused somewhere else for creating articles just to turn a county red...which is not true, i do really enjoy creating the articles and learning a little bit about faraway places and achieving something good for others to build further upon (like just finding coords for the Swedish Zion Lutheran Church, which makes all the difference for a wikipedian photographer to find it, or finding other sources, etc.) I am mildly amused by turning counties red, though, so let that direct where i channel my efforts, which no one should complain about imho. Anyhow, thanks for ur good work, am signing off for now. Cheers, --doncram 03:43, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really mind the whole "turning counties red" thing, so long as it's leading to more quality articles. I've been working from county lists myself lately: see Merced County, California, for instance. It's a good way to learn about the history of a county. As for the redirect issue, I'll keep that in mind in the future; I can probably just take care of that when I do the rest of my post-AfC cleanup. Category warring....No, I am not kidding

[edit]

As fate would have it: war of edits on County Gov in USA. Do you think it needs a lock? The back and forth on the one man remove the local gov crusade is getting mighty thinCoal town guy (talk) 16:14, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this county government edit war is getting ridiculous, but since I've already commented on part of the dispute, I'd probably be considered involved. I do think someone neutral needs to settle this though. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 19:17, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Are you OK if I consult with Acroterion(sp?). I think his level thinking would help this along. I will of coutrse mention your name as well because, it is starting to get a tad over te top and halfway up the other side.Coal town guy (talk) 21:56, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

South Portsmouth

[edit]

Thanks for creating (and fixing my mistake at) South Portsmouth, Kentucky, along with lots of other tiny Kentucky communities. I was there six months ago, and then was here in Fulton County in the opposite corner of the state three weeks ago; it's ridiculously hard to believe that they're in the same state. Atlas and Gazetteer question

[edit]

Hey there- I did indeed find the KY data online. Question though. I have a copy of Delormes WV Atlas and Gazetteer. I know of a few places I could ref usingh this BUT here is my question: With the KY data, there is a number associated and I could get a link and go from there. BUT, with the WV data, a hard copy, I have no number as a place identifier. I could use a page? and that could be an inline ref? I was also going to ask Catalyst as he has done a PILE of WV locations as well. ANY feedback you have would of course be welcome. I have asked Nyytend this as well, BUT I want to be clear and have a sort of consensus. I have ALOT of WV places which I can add....BUT I would have to rely on the Delorme Atlas AND of course a link to the WV Culture and History Place Names Page on the web. In my edits, I have seen WV pages with sort of ref, WHAT do you think??Coal town guy (talk) 20:47, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GNIS response?

[edit]

Hey there- I actually called Lou Yost and e mailed him at GNIS and to date no reply...If I may ask, WHO are you e mailing/communicating with at GNIS because I still have ALOT of WV locations I would love to add. Many thanksCoal town guy (talk) 23:13, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've just been e-mailing gnis_manager@usgs.gov, the e-mail that the Board of Geographic Names tells you to submit errors to. I've had a few different people on their research team get back to me about errors, so you should probably just try that e-mail rather than asking any specific person. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:29, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
VERY COOL. I also just went through the submit a new feature name form, all 14 steps,,,,AND some one will call. WHICH is cool because, I was able to get some nice info on a place named Eight WV in McDowell County. Name of the coal co there. YAY. SO, we will see.Coal town guy (talk) 23:48, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
NOTE IF this turns out well, I have a list of WV towns which some folks may not have heard of, even those who are familiar with the state, ...fingers crossed. Bowyer (Raleigh County), Paint Creek (in Kanawha), Pawhama (in Mercer) etc etc etc etcCoal town guy (talk) 02:00, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Funny that you mention Paint Creek. I remember there's a Paint Creek Road that runs along the West Virginia Turnpike for a while between Charleston and Beckley. Since it's such a long road I always wanted to know if there was a town by that name or just a creek, but I always assumed it was just a creek since I couldn't find a community by the name in the GNIS. It's cool to know that there actually was a community named Paint Creek. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 05:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Its in Kanawha County, they had a post office, and SURPRISE, it was a coal mining town. If you were going from Charleston to Beckley, you could have quickly jaunted over Pluto...Coal town guy (talk) 20:56, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Got an e mail from the GNIS folk, I have submitted my data for Eight WV, the Historical Populated Place in McDowell County. They recognize the PO, but the town is what I want to update, fingers crossed.Coal town guy (talk) 03:03, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Jacksonboro, South Carolina

[edit]

Hi-I came across the Jacksonboro, South Carolina article. It was labelled a county seat but I don't know if it is accurate. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 10:16, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Jacksonboro is not a county seat, I'm not sure why it was in that category. I've cleaned up the article. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 19:06, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So, whatever happened to Paint Creek, in Kanawha County?????

[edit]

It is now called Hansford, at least, the Hansford Post Office, was also known as the Paint Creek Post Office AND GUESS WHAT, thats because it was there. AND see here AND page 114 of A gazetteer of West Virginia, Volume 8, Issue 233. VERY realhere I believe...Coal town guy (talk) 23:51, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, that makes sense. I was inspired yesterday to write an article on the creek itself, and its mouth is at Hansford. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:05, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have spoken to a few residents in that area. Meaning, from the place named Paintcreek, note, its all one word.....It was harsh, I wish I owned some coal scrip from there, but I need both of my kidneys and the kids will go to college, oh well. Are you OK, IF I updated the Hansford, West Virginia page with the data from the old gazetteer (which by the way is a free e book) and the data about the PO from GNIS? Let me know and I will proceed, with a gusto. Nice article by the wayCoal town guy (talk) 00:14, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that sounds like a good thing to do. The Hansford article could use some more history. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:24, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

THEN, I have a larger challenge, and I will need your help, In Raleigh, there was a placee named Bowyer, it became Whitby, West Virginia. GNIS lists a Creek and a school for Bowyer,BUT I have this and this andthis AND this. HOW do I make this a wiki page???????Coal town guy (talk) 01:05, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I'm not sure how much I can help with that one. I can't find any more sources besides the ones on your website and what's in the Whitby article. You probably have more information about it; if you want to start an article, go ahead. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:51, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, I also made the red links blue in the Paint Creek (West Virginia) article you did about the actual creek.Coal town guy (talk) 02:55, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Morgan Morgan, needs help

[edit]

Hey- Morgan Morgan was claimed to be the first settler in WV. Much like kids being taught Christopher Columbus discovered America. BUT, its not sio, and that has been ref'd. HOWEVER, we have folks who are using a genealogy page about Morgan and from what I can tell, Morgan Morgan sired the entire eastern seaboard, built roads by sheer will and must have been a citizen of the planet Krypton as he was an Inn Keeper and Pastor etc etc etc . Its ALMOST an edit war and BONUS....the editors are IP's!!!! Can we at least lock the thing? Or in some way AGAIN state, the refs they have are not correct. Coal town guy (talk) 15:56, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like there's only one or two IPs adding these claims, and it's not really persistent, so I don't think it warrants protection as of now. Though that source doesn't look at all reliable, so if they keep adding it feel free to keep taking it back out. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 19:26, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Residents

[edit]

Hey there- I will be updating a number of county articles, and in that process, I have found a question. Is there a reliable standard for what makes a resident? In short, a movie star drove through a town. Their car broke down or they did a film there. Does that make them a resident?? Otherwise, the resident claims would sky rocket and be unrealistic. [edit]

GOOD NEWS, at least for, those of us who thrive on coal towns, The GNIS folk have indeed read and AGREED with my request to have the town of Eight WV in McDowell County listed within GNIS as a populated place, more than likely, historical! The Post Office has an entry, they did NOT however know if it was an actual town......UNTIL NOW.......The listing should appear within a week.Coal town guy (talk) 02:07, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

YES, I have some MASSIVE updates for the area of Whitby, Jonben, and Fireco. We need a new entry for as place named Battleship, which was Ralco and then called Battleship. Bowyer, was a place which then acquired the name of Whitby. Battleship, which was Ralco, ALSO was part of Whitby, it was then called West Whitby and I have the plat maps from the county (Raleigh) for that. [edit]

Hi-I was looking at Nyttend's Zipcode Directory. Okay Prospect Harbor, Maine was redirected and I added the Gnis an inform box is needed. Bluewater, New Mexico needs work and someone proposed merging it with another article Bluewater Village, New Mexico. It is not very clear. You may want to look at this especiaaly with thw talk page at the Bluewater Village, New Mexico article. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 23:50, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dwyer, New Mexico

[edit]

Hi-Dwyer, New Mexico-thanks-RFD (talk) 11:27, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi-I am working on an article about a New Mexico legislator and rancher G. X. McSherry. The obituaries mentioned he was born in Dwyer, New Mexico. That article I started. However, another article said he was born near Faywood, New Mexico. That gets complicated. Nyttend's zipcode directory lists it as having a 88034 zipcode but the GNIS-919965 lists it as a historical (ghost town). It is confusing Faywood, NM is a ghost town but has a zipcode. Many thanks for your help as always-RFD (talk) 12:42, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker)RFD- No worries, there are a number of "ghost towns" with their own zips. I learned that here as well.Coal town guy (talk) 13:05, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks Coal town guy-RFD (talk) 13:11, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This gets even more confusing. Apparently Faywood is a CDP, and the Census Bureau says it has a population of 33. I'm not sure how the GNIS thinks it's a ghost town when it has 33 residents; I suspect there were two communities named Faywood. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 19:56, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hey- Something of interest for some of us. I just scored a copy of "The American counties : origins of county names, dates of creation, and population data, 1950-2000" for rather cheap.

I was thinking of updating a "few" county hostories. OF NOTE, the book actually does list original county names, AND their renaming dates when it applies......Rather cool ref to have. However, I bought it used, NO WAY I would buy a new copy. SO, heads up IF there should be a few US counties getting some history added, OR if anyone wants a look up, you will know whyCoal town guy (talk) 13:19, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi-Dwyer Junction, Wyoming, Dwyer, Wyoming. There is also Dwyer, Ohio GNIS=1059124 in Montgomery County, Ohio but I think Dwyer, Ohio may be in Dayton, Ohio or in Kettering, Ohio. nv, ne, nm, ar

[edit]
Gann Building, arkansas

Hi -- I've noticed your recent new articles and other contributions in NV and NE nrhp articles. Wonder if u noticed that all three of NV, NE, and NM are likely to roll over "articled" thresholds this week (50%, 20%, and 20%). Maybe will happen this week anyhow, but definitely will if my 17 or so current submissions (updating value: 0 articles in Category:Submissions by Doncram ready for review) happen to be accepted already, by you or others. :) Thanks for your help everywhere, including in Saline Cty, AR. cheers, --doncram 14:03, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that Kansas (I assume you meant KS instead of NE) was that close, and was about to nudge it over 20% myself, but I didn't realize the other two were that close as well. I'll take a look at your articles for review if I have the time. Hopefully we can get KS and NM over 20%, since that would leave only South Dakota less than 20% articled. (The poor state is less than 20% illustrated too. We really need to get an editor from SD.) TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:11, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes, meant KS wherever i said NE above. And interesting to confirm u had the nudging over in mind for KS, i thot u might have. Yes, SD looks lonely, but even if there were an editor or two interested, they'd be without NRHP docs, not available there. I'm willing to do far more where there NRHP docs are available or where there's at least the level of support that AR provides, and I wouldn't even want to recruit an SD person yet, really. Thanks for taking care of Ebenezer Baptist Church and more. --doncram 22:28, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm noticing your multiple "notifications" hits on George P. Washburn architect (architect of KS courthouses) article...makes it easier to do a bit better of an article, if the architect article has been created, huh? :) That was one where there was edit warring against it, from the moment I started the article. Glad it's serving an intended purpose of serving multiple separate NRHP articles, now, anyhow. --doncram 05:02, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking. I see that Acroterion already mentioned NRHP listings, but if you're passing through Fayette County, its list has more missing pictures than the other two combined. I can't think of anything too specific other than that; it's always nice to have pictures of communities, but there are too many for me to single out any one. [edit]

your commenting out the picture in the Court at 744-756.5 Marengo, Pasadena, CA? How do you know this is the wrong court? The pic File:Court at 744-756½ S. Marengo Ave. 3.JPG seems to show the same buildings with an address of 745 (it might be 743, but I see 745). Just checking. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:31, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The pictures don't match the pictures from the NRHP nomination, and the house pictured is the wrong architectural style. Also, according to the map of the court, there isn't a unit 745; they're all even numbers. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 04:00, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hortonville/Hortonia

[edit]

Hi-Hortonia, Vermont, Hortonville, Vermont, Hortonville, Massachusetts, Hortonville, New Mexico. Hortonville, Massachusetts is related to the Hortonville Historic District. I took care of the other three, but Hortonville, MA has already been merged to Hortonville Historic District. As far as I can tell they're the same place, so I'm fine with the merge, though the title should probably be Hortonville, Massachusetts, since that's the common name for the area. I'll ask Polaron about it. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:12, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maryknoll

[edit]

Right you are; I've undeleted it and included in the deletion log a link to your message. Basically, I thought that it was a case of someone (1) figuring that the convent complex should get the link because it's named Maryknoll and it's in New York [basically the same idea as how Long Island, New York redirects to Long Island], and (2) not knowing or not caring that there was a real community of the same name somewhere else in the state. Thanks for pointing out my mistake. Nyttend (talk) 23:41, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your involvement with article review (and a bit of mentorship) for Doncram. Since the Arbcom case closed, I've been pleased and relieved to see that several users have been willing to take the time to work with him. I hope that your good advice doesn't cause you to end up joining me on his enemies list, as Dudemanfellabra seems to have done. --Orlady (talk) 21:22, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

NRHPPROGRESS

[edit]

Thanks for running the script earlier today. I was in a wedding over the weekend, so I was unable to run it. I was actually just getting on now to run the script for the day, but I saw you had already done so. If I may ask, did everything work fine? How long did it take to run? I'm pretty sure you're the only other person besides me to have run it... do you feel like anything needs to be changed? I've pretty much developed it for my own taste without any other input, but I'd like to make it more user-friendly if possible. Just fishing for ideas. Thanks again!--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 18:42, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I ran the script again after fixing the code to ignore the map date. Since it didn't change it in this latest diff, it appears to be working as expected.--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 19:45, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Stotesbury WV update

[edit]

As of this past month, the St Johns Church in Stotesbury, 3 stories, all wood, built by coal miners, was reduced to its stone foundations. I will of course update the Stotesbury article, I will be in fact, totally encyclopedic and not mention this sheer and total waste of what should have been an incredible historic structure. I did film the inside before its collapse, and can if you want provide the youtube linkCoal town guy (talk) 01:29, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for updating me. It's a shame to lose such a historic church. That reminds me, I've been meaning to write an article on it. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:59, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oyotunji

[edit]

Hi-I came across an article about Oyotunji in South Carolina. The village was founded in the 1970s and is based on African traditional religions. There is no GNIS. Thanks-RFD (talk) 11:17, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite sure what to do about this one. It's not a traditional community, which makes it hard to put under the usual categories, and I can't figure out where its coordinates are. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 21:53, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They are a cult at best. There are "outposts" globally...at least, when their "king" attempted to rename downtown Chicago..and does not pay taxes as they proclaim to not be part of the US....., just my 2 cents. Also, all of the links are run by members of the society or, folks who are practitioners, NOT certain if this is even neutral....Coal town guy (talk) 00:37, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kennedy, Wisconsin

[edit]

Hi-the Kennedy, Wisconsin article was changed to a ghost town in Price County, Wisconsin. I checked the GNIS and look at Google satellite and it looks like their are still buildings and probably people still living there. However, Kennedy is not on the Wisconsin DOT Price County map. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 12:09, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect the latest addition is referring to Kennedy as a ghost town in the sense that it's lost most of its population and businesses and not in the sense that it's completely abandoned. I've seen both usages in articles, so it's probably fine. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 19:34, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

KS nrhps

[edit]

I noticed that Kansas Route 66 Historic District-East Galena needs an article in its KS county, while it was a whatchamacallit(?) link before. I don't know what bigger pattern u might be working on, but i hope u don't mind my raising the hurdle if u were trying to finish that county. I've raised the hurdle on myself that way before (e.g. Morrill). Anyhow I'll draft something at User:Doncram/Kansas Route 66 Historic District-East Galena now which you could choose to use or not. cheers, --doncram 05:36, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

While I don't have a problem with raising the hurdle, I'm not convinced that the historic district needs a separate article; I was actually the one that pointed the link to U.S. Route 66 in Kansas in the first place. The historic district only consists of a short section of the Route 66 roadway and doesn't have any additional buildings in it. Since we already have state-by-state articles on Route 66, the sections of the roadbed which are NRHP-listed are usually just covered in the state articles; see here, for example, where several NRHP-listed sections of roadbed in Oklahoma redirect to the main article. Kansas doesn't have any other NRHP-listed pieces of road since its section of roadbed is so short, but there's still no need to split out this one section. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 06:04, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually i assumed that the historic district was one that included buildings in a main street type area; i can't think of a historic district example just including roadway (e.g. for historic Rochambeau march route segments in CT, each typically included historic roadside stone walls or other resources, too). This turned out to be different than i expected. And, sorry, i assumed someone else had done the redirect, unknowing of actual content of the district. I wouldn't mind at all if the topic was covered in the Kansas route 66 article instead. Feel free to copy-paste from the draft article, or whatever, to put some coverage into the KS article. There should be at least a redirect from the actual NRHP HD district name, however, as some readers may be looking for that specifically (coming from NRHP.COM or some other source). I guess i could create that, and try adding material to the KS article, as a section or as just a sentence or two. But why don't you just do it? I've only complicated matters, while i was hoping to be helpful. Sorry/cheers --doncram 23:00, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see you already did add a sentence or so to the KS article; i just did the redirect and added a little more there, trying out using an extended footnote to avoid overwhelming the main text, but trying also to convey that this is the place that the NRHP is covered. Feel free to revise or delete. Done, over, ciao... --doncram 23:24, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry, this one had me confused for a while too. The district isn't named in the same way as other segments of Route 66 (which usually have "roadbed" or something in the name), so I was rather surprised when I read the nomination form and it turned out to be another road segment. It doesn't help that the NPS page on the site discusses businesses in Galena, even though there are no businesses included in the district or even discussed in the nomination form. I'll write something about the segment in the Route 66 in Kansas article. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:30, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for processing a bunch. You may have noticed, List of RHPs in CO is nearly rolling over 40%. I just noticed yesterday it was maybe about 6 short; maybe u have had something to do with it coming to that point already? Anyhow that's why i've put some attention there. Thanks again, cheers, --doncram 23:56, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
CO is just one article short, i think. .4 * 1,430 = 572 i think (I am not a math person); 566 + 5 in that batch = 571, and no more have been drafted by me, so it would be great if you'd go for anything of interest to you. :) --doncram 00:20, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OIC! Me, i was wandering down through CO to NM to TX, and wondering if there is any route to get from there to OK or further, and oic u seem to have some idea, good! Thanks again for recent processing, and CO is clearly over .4 for good if further new items in my cat are processed. --doncram 18:50, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
