New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello TheSandDoctor/Archives/2023,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Shawntheshipper socks

The EKA (manufacturing company) is re-created it was pastly created by the socks that have been blocked. --- Misterrrrr (talk) 09:52, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

@Misterrrrr: Which master is this related to or what name was it under previously? I'm going in circles from this one to draft and Draft:EKA (Manufacturing company) (and EKA (Manufacturing company)) to this title but there are no blocked socks in any of the editing histories that I can see (including deleted revisions). TheSandDoctor Talk 15:59, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
I just found Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Shawntheshipper and have endorsed the check. TheSandDoctor Talk 16:06, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

Need help

How can i be a Autopatrolled user, my last request was declined. --- Misterrrrr (talk) 18:08, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

@TheSandDoctor can you please reply. --- Misterrrrr (talk) 10:53, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
We are volunteers and aren't always around to answer questions immediately and appreciate some patience. You were just declined by @HJ Mitchell: on January 9th stating that you need more experience so I don't feel comfortable granting it at this time. @Usernamekiran: stated at the time that they believed you didn't have much experience with notability guidelines and reliably identifying reliable sources, which are admittedly tricky concepts to pick up on. I would start by reading the policies and looking at other examples (perhaps featured articles and good articles for quality examples) and try to mirror the structure. Going through the Articles for Creation process would also be helpful, as would asking for assistance with particular questions at the Teahouse.
If HJ Mitchell or usernamekiran have any other suggestions, please do drop them here. TheSandDoctor Talk 16:18, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
@Misterrrrr: Hello. Being auto-patrolled gives no additional technical abilities, or tools/features to the user. That means, if you become autopatrolled user, you will not even realise it. An autopatrolled user can create the same articles as of a normal user, there is no limit for any user on how many articles can be created per day. Only the editors who have shown clear understanding of notability criteria, have perfect article creations, and are generally trusted by the community get this perm. Regarding notability understanding, your two articles have been moved to draftspace, and almost all your articles are stubs about NPOL candidates, these are not at difficult to be reviewed/patrolled. Most of your articles are 2-3 lines cookie-cutter stubs: Dalip Thakur, Kedar Prasad Gupta, Rivaba Jadeja, Fazle Azim Molla. Regarding perfect creations: there are currently 59 of your articles in mainspace, you did not create talkpages for any of these articles (they were created by others) - you should create talkpages with relevant wikiproject banners on them. In all the articles that I sampled, there are no templates in articles like stub, default sort, or authority control. I checked history of Umesh Makwana here. The article you created lacked many things, which were later added by others. I am not saying you should do it one go/edit, you could do it in multiple hours/edits, those who do get auto-patrolled flag, others need to be patrolled. I also have some other concerns which I am not comfortable to share. —usernamekiran (talk) 17:00, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
courtesy link to auto-patrolled request where I had given a brief explanation: special:permalink/1133183923#User:Misterrrrr. —usernamekiran (talk) 17:08, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
Ok, i understood everything now. I was asking for that right because, if i would get any other right than autoconfirmed and the automatic extended confirmed then i would thought that i got something in exchange of my time given to wikipedia. --- Misterrrrr (talk) 04:05, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
@Misterrrrr: Ah, I see. No, there are no other automatic user permissions. The rest need to be applied for in their respective sections at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions (with cause and demonstrated experience). User rights aren't trophies to be acquired, either. I would strongly recommend reading the last explainer I just linked and perhaps going through the pages that describe what each right is/does. cc @Usernamekiran and HJ Mitchell: TheSandDoctor Talk 15:07, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, I understood. --- Misterrrrr (talk) 16:09, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
