Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Hello, TheSandDoctor,

After you restored a draft deleted via CSD G13, you need to make an edit to the page or it immediately because eligible for speedy deletion again. See User:SDZeroBot/G13 eligible. There is a script used by admins who frequent WP:REFUND that might be useful for you, it's at User:SD0001/RFUD-helper. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 00:37, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Liz:! I did? TheSandDoctor Talk 00:39, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
Yep! But don't feel bad, it's a G13 restoration trick that admins don't know about until this thing happens. Very common. Liz Read! Talk! 05:15, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

New username categories

Hello, again, TheSandDoctor,

I see you created some new categories about usernames but they are showing up as categories to be deleted in Category:Candidates for uncontroversial speedy deletion. They are very full categories so they can't be deleted but they probably shouldn't be there any way and I can't see a tag on the pages that I can remove. Just as a head's up, when I've run into this kind of problem with templates or pages mysteriously showing up in CSD categories to be deleted (when they shouldn't be deleted), I've gone to Pppery for help and they seem to be able to find what is causing the problem. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 05:15, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

@Liz: Thanks for the heads up. That is so weird that they are listed as they definitely weren't nominated and shouldn't have been listed based on the page source/categories having members. It'll be interesting to see what @Pppery: thinks. TheSandDoctor Talk 05:22, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
Old (referring to the month the category refers to, not when it was created) {{Monthly clean-up category}}-es with no members are automatically tagged for speedy deletion. This is standard practice and not a problem. It appears what happened in this case is that the bot created the category before populating it (thus resulting in it being correctly tagged for speedy deletion), and then it took some time for the system to realize the category was now populated and remove it from the speedy deletion category. A WP:NULLEDIT would have worked to properly remove it from the category, although by the time I saw that ping the problem had fixed itself. * Pppery * it has begun... 21:51, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
@Pppery: Ah, I didn't know that the categories would be automatically created if a page was inserted; I thought I had to have it do that itself. That said, the retroactive actions that required historical creations are all done and shouldn't re-occur. TheSandDoctor Talk 04:15, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from EmilyBozzo on User:EmilyBozzo/sandbox (01:30, 14 September 2023)

Hello, I am having difficulty with the formatting of my page. Can you please help? --EmilyBozzo (talk) 01:30, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

@EmilyBozzo: I've done some basic formatting on it. For starters, I would recommend taking a look at {{Infobox person}} and replacing massive caption with that. Take inspiration from another article's infobox, such as Bill Gates or another person? TheSandDoctor Talk 04:30, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

Requesting a copy of a deleted article: 2023 Isabela Cessna 206 disappearance

Hi, TheSandDoctor! I am Abacusada, the main contributor to the 2023 Isabela Cessna 206 disappearance article, which was deleted in February 2023 per an AfD. It was about the Cessna 206 that disappeared (now found as of March 2023) around Isabela, Philippines. It was challenged due to notability issues (particularly because of WP:RUNOFTHEMILL, WP:LASTING, and WP:NOTNEWS), as the nominator argued.

Now that it has been months since the incident, I think there has been enough development to the incident to make it almost warrant an article. The aircraft has been found with no survivors in retrieval operations that took more than a month, investigations are taken into place, and two more similar aircraft crashed, all questioning the reliability of each aircraft's emergency locator transmitters. Above that, there are plenty of published reliable sources covering the incident since it disappeared until the present. I would like to humbly ask for a copy of the deleted article since I do not really want to start from scratch. I also chose to approach you since your name appeared on this list, and I have come across your name pretty often on Wikipedia. Your help is well appreciated. Thank you! – Abacusada (t • c) 15:00, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Abacusada:! I did you one better and restored the article as a draft at Draft:2023 Isabela Cessna 206 disappearance. Please do not move it back to the article namespace unless it has gone through WP:AFC. TheSandDoctor Talk 17:35, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
This is noted. Thank you very much! – Abacusada (t • c) 17:46, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello TheSandDoctor/Archives/2023,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Reminders:
