Adoption

Hi, I found your entry on the Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user/Adoptee's Area/Adopters page and was hoping you would be up for ‘adopting’ me. I am new to Wikipedia and interested in becoming a low-key yet dedicated member. I study East Asian art history and religious studies, but I am generally curious about and interested in various topics. I am fluent in English and German and I am a trained library technician. I am keen to contribute by cleaning up and expanding articles, but also perhaps by creating new ones (when the time comes).

I am a little overwhelmed with how to best approach beginning my time on Wikipedia and would appreciate some sort of guidance. As I understood from your adoption post your availability is limited and that suits me quite well as I study full time. If I misunderstood this please let me know how much time you would expect me to set aside for this adoption project. I would be very happy to be adopted by you, but otherwise I would appreciate any tips or advice about how to go forward.

Hi, Zrstnr! Sorry for the late reply. There are practically infinite ways to contribute to Wikipedia, and I'm sure it won't be hard for someone with your skillset to find their footing. I'm not very fluent in East Asian art history short of acing a non-Western art history elective some years ago, but I'd be willing to put in as much or as little time as you feel you need. The site's structure under-the-hood is a bit abstruse, so I'd be more than happy to give you the best guidance I can on useful resources, editing philosophies (yes, those exist), creating a user page if you choose to do so, tidying up articles, article creation and deletion, and even detouring outside the English Wikipedia if you feel adventurous.
I've only been here for a few years, and I've never adopted an editor before. Up until recently, I've mostly been a WP:GNOME, so a lot of my experience is in things with minimal interaction like keeping citations clean, wikilinks in check, and spelling and grammar correct. Beyond that, I mostly stick to new page patrol, the Teahouse, and creating or significantly expanding low-profile articles like Socrates Nelson and most of the Neolithodes stubs. So you could say I'm kind of a celebrity around here. That said, if you'd like to be adopted, consider yourself adopted as a clearly promising editor. You set aside whatever amount of time is reasonable, because at the end of the day, whatever feels the most natural for you is probably what will make you the best editor you can be.
With all that out of the way, feel free to ask any question(s) that spring(s) to mind as a new editor. Just whatever comes to mind, unfiltered. Doesn't matter if it seems silly or nebulous or too complex or too simple or anything. It's been a long while since I was on the other side of the looking glass, and so I want to – as best I can – step into your shoes. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 04:30, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
Hey TheTechnician27 sorry for taking a while to respond. I had to finish up a few things and am looking forward to jumping into Wikipedia now that things have settled. I think, to begin, I would be interested in checking and cleaning up citations. Also being a WP:Gnome sounds very appealing.
How do you think I should get started? Just go through random pages and check the links? I suppose I feel overwhelmed with where and how to begin. I need some kind of methodical or systematic approach and I’m a bit unsure of how to get into the whole editing process without feeling like I’m just all over the place and nowhere at the same time. Maybe you’re working on something that I could assist with in this regard? I hope well and look forward to taking the next step!

New page reviewer granted

Hi TheTechnician27. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. signed, Rosguill talk 19:59, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
