B&E Project Welcome

Thank you for joining the B&E project. Do you have any areas of special interest? Egfrank 18:22, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Project Finance

Hi Random, Unfortunatly project finance is defunked. I could not find enough people intereseted, so I decided to focus on passing my CFA in June. Feel free to take control of the project. --DrewWiki 14:14, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

By Control I meant you can do whatever you want with it. The project is yours to do with it as you please. My vision was to make finance to that the every page within finance was had both backward and foward navigation through a series of different types of templates, right side and bottom. If your intersted, my plan you can see in full on the project finance page, but also you can see it in this progression. Remember to look both to the right and the bottom of the page.

Finance Bond market Credit derivative

Each one leads from the other and allows backward and foward navigation.

These were just my thoughts. If you want to do something totally different, sure go ahead. But i'm still out of commission. My cfa is June 2nd

--DrewWiki 19:10, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm also interested in helping to breathe new life into this project. I think you might also want to contact User:Mackabean who is especially interested in making sure the presentation of some of the newer credit instruments is balanced. See here Egfrank 14:52, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Company assessments

I've started a discussion on company assessments on the B&E project talk page. Perhaps you would like to put your two cents in? Egfrank 14:44, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

hi

hi thanks for the welcome. are you new here too, you still have a welcome thing on yur talk page? Shadow_master66

Hello

Hi Random Editor. Thanks for the compliments on my talkpage. :) Anyways, what kind of advice do you need? According to this (an edit counter), you're on the right track. Editing mainspace (articles) is important, because that's what we're here for; most new editors (including myself 8 months ago), don't do that, and just worry about userspace (userpages, sig books, etc.), which isn't bad unless you over-do it. I notice you've been editing as an IP for a while, so you probably understand how editing works; however, I doubt you got into the wikipedia namespace (aka wikispace; maintenance and policy pages mainly) as much. I recommend starting off with Wikipedia:Wikipediholism test, since it has several links to areas where more participants are needed. Also, you should try Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates, which is where the pictures from the main page are evaluated and voted on; it's very interesting (especially if you like pictures). Good luck, and feel free to ask me anything else. · AO Talk 12:22, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Well, for userpages, there's just one tip: copy whatever you like from others (ask first; even though they'll always say you can borrow their idea, it's nice to let them know you like it). I copied my current design from a previous version of DarknessLord's; it's made almost identically like a Portal. Captain panda copied my previous userpage, which I copied from Arjun, which he copied from... someone else. Another thing I recommend... WP:POPUPS; a bit annoying at the beginning, absolutely necessary once you get used to it. It's great for checking your watchlist, Recent Changes, or when reading an article (even works in edit mode, just that you have to highlight the article name, including it's brackets). Leave me a note if you need more help! · AO Talk 00:30, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
By the way, thank you for supporting in my RfA, but I haven't accepted it yet (only by e-mail), so your !vote was removed. I'll accept on Saturday (because I'm a bit short on time until then), so you can re-add it then if you like, or oppose/neutral/abstain if you prefer. :-) · AO Talk 18:14, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Don't worry, it's not a big deal. :) · AO Talk 19:01, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Adding articles to the B&E project

The simple answer to your query: Be bold. Go for it! There are a lot of pages that unaccountably got left out of the list of B&E related projects. Egfrank 15:00, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Subprime lending

Hey random editor. Egfrank sent me your way as someone interested in business and economics articles. I have been trying to do some work on the subprime lending articles, as this issue has been in the news a lot. In particular, I am interested in fixing up subprime lending and subprime meltdown. Not sure if this stuff is up your alley, but if it is, hit me up on my talk page User talk:Mackabean and I can share some of my ideas of what needs to be done. Cheers! --Mackabean 14:41, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey. Psyched that you are interested in the subprime lending articles. I am going to move this discussion over there so that others who are interested in those articles can see it. So check the Talk:Subprime_lending page and let's chat more there. Glad to have some help on this important topic. --Mackabean 19:56, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I've removed your opinion on that RfA; he hasn't accepted it yet. It's best to let him accept and transclude it before anyone leaves an opinion. But do remember to readd it when it's up :) Majorly (hot!) 18:12, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

You're allowed to do it, but not me. If you'd like to do it, go ahead. :-) · AO Talk 09:16, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Subprime lending

Working on it; I'll tell you if I can fix it. · AO Talk 23:49, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Okay, done. You seem to have forgotten to add "</ref>" after the last reference. That's why the last sentence in the article and the links were missing (they were included as part of the reference). Also, you should try to change all the sources in the article to how I did the last one (and like the last three in the External Links section), using Template:Cite web. I'll help tomorrow, but no time right now. Good luck in the meantime! · AO Talk 23:58, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

It's not against the rules, but not encouraged either. Ask him if he could consider changing his username. =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:47, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello Random

Your sig's code can be significantly reduced:

Before (302 chars): Random Say it here!

After (249 chars): Random Say it here!

It still violates the mentioned limit in the guideline WP:SIG (200 chars), but at least it's better. I have more ideas to help reduce the code, but they require certain small sacrifices in the looks. (Courtesy of the Signature shop) :-) NikoSilver 19:30, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

How about this: Random Say it here!? It's even shorter. By the way, I think you're right about User:The Way, the truth, and the light. · AO Talk 22:57, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Hmm... I don't know how to fix that; sorry. Maybe try a simpler sig (that worked for another friend with the same problem)? · AO Talk 00:11, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Name appropriateness discussion

Thank-you for alerting me to the discussion. It raises some interesting issues. However, may I suggest in the future being a bit more careful about wording of such messages? It didn't come across as neutral. Please see, WP:CANVAS#Types of canvassing for guidelines. Egfrank 07:57, 22 April 2007 (UTC

Date Format

Hello, I have noticed that you are changing the date format of many articles, including John Major and Elizabeth I of England to the American date format. The MofS (see here) states that is preferable to the use the date format of the country the person comes from. So Major and Elizabeth I should have British date format, and should not be changed to American. Please remember this for the future. --UpDown 20:17, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Template Central bank

Hi Random, Thank you for the kind words. Be bold in your edits. It was your template of {{Central Bank}} that prometed me to make {{Central banks of the European Union}}, wich was basicly a ocpy-paste of {{Currencies of Europe}} where I pasted the list of banks.
Have You considered to make the central bank template collapsable, or perhaps converting to use some of the generic templates?
Best regards
Mads Angelbo Talk / Contribs 14:12, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't think I will look into it the near furture, but you can always ask one of the "experts", look in Category:User template coder for some one with experince. or you can make a user_sub_page/sandbox(Wikipedia:About the Sandbox) and try to fiddle with the code before publishing it.

If you think it's a good idea, then I see no reason why not. You've pretty much got everything down; all you need is another couple of months experience, and you're a well rounded wikipedian. :) Also, I don't think deleting Llama's userpage is necessary, since he hasn't edited yet. If says he wants it deleted, then I'd be glad to do it. · AndonicO Talk 00:54, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

There's a fair chance that you would become one. I took 9 months, but I've seen admins with only 6 months experience. Remember though, adminship isn't a big deal. Do you think that just because I became an admin, I'm suddenly a better editor? I very much doubt it. :) · AndonicO Talk 08:24, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

GA Nomination Review for Money

By GA criteria the article would have failed. However, because of its level of importance, I have nominated it as the Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles' collaboration of the week (COW). To qualify for nomination the article must be a GA candidate, therefore I have put the GA nomination on hold for no more than seven days. There is a summary of necessary changes (though it is not a complete list) that you can begin to work on. If the COW nomination does not go through, the GA nomination will be failed unless there are significant improvements to the quality of the article.

Feel free to leave any comments or questions on my talk page. --LaraLoveTalk/Contribs 07:14, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Billion

Hello. I see you have attempted to make billion a redirect to 1000000 (number) and added a disambig at billion (disambiguation). There are a couple of problems with this.

  • You need to discuss a change like this before making it. Check out Talk:Billion. Other users have debated this before. That doesn't mean it can't be changed; just that being bold should give way to finding consensus.
  • More seriously, you should not Cut and Paste when changing the name of a page; use the Move facility to rename it as this preserves the edit history. See WP:MOVE#Page histories.

Regards, jnestorius(talk) 23:42, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello Bhadani. You may remeber me it is The Random Editor. They are discussing Whether or not to make billion a redirect page to 1000000000 (number). I foolishly made an edit without discussing the subject, and it was reverted. I would like to hear your opinion on the matter, whatever it may be. Hi Random. I surely remember you, and thanks for coming to my page. I find that the discussion is perhaps over: Talk:1000000000 (number). However, in my opinion, a page with the name Billion (like the Million) appears to be a better choice and less confusing to all concerned. --Bhadani (talk) 17:27, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Global perspectives task force proposal

Hi Random! Given the high quality of your edits and your international experience, I wanted to draw your attention to a task force that I'm proposing. Any thoughts? Do you think it's a good idea? Do you think it makes more sense as a task force or an independent project? Any advice you have would be appreciated, as I admire your contributions to the community. No sweat if you don't have time to respond...Anyway, here is what I posted on the Project council page:Benzocane 18:25, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Global Perspectives Task force Hi, forgive me if this is discussed somewhere in the archive or if an extant WikiProject covers my proposal, but: I'm wondering if a task force specifically concerned with making sure global perspectives are represented in key articles would be an efficient way to counter the systemic Western, 1st world bias the WikiProject Countering systemic biaslists among its concerns. As has often been noted, many articles have sections (e.g. "media response") that only describe U.S. events/reactions. I would be happy to spearhead an effort to make sure global perspectives are included where relevant. Any thoughts or advice regarding such a task force would be much appreciated. Keep up the great work!Benzocane 03:43, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, Random, for your thoughts and encouragement! Given your work in the community, it counts. I've posted the proposal here. Best, Benzocane 00:14, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Feedback

Hello again. You asked me to comment on your work; I've looked at bit more at your edit history and the main point is that I think you're an efficient and sensible Wikipedian who doesn't really need advice from me :). There are a couple of point you might like to note, and ignore or heed as you see fit.

  • I'm not sure is was necessary to add Template:Central Bank to all the central bank articles: would Category:Central banks and List of central banks be enough context for readers? This is a matter of opinion; see Wikipedia:Navigational templates.
  • I wasn't sure about your edit to Kenneth_Chenault. I edited the article myself: see what you think. I recast the opening paragraph with the important information in the first sentence. I reused some external links you had removed. I added inline references: the current wikiformat for these is pretty ugly and intrusive for editors, but I still think they're too beneficial to ignore. How to implement WP:CITE is not agreed in Wikipedia, but whether to do so is. I've gotten into the habit of making smaller edits with citations rather than longer ones without; I find they better survive subsequent edits by others.

That's about all I have to offer you. If you have any specific concerns, ask away, but it seems to me you're doing fine. Regards, jnestorius(talk) 01:54, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
