WP:Fishing Version 1.0 assesment

I found the problem at the project template. It was this edit by User:Drinibot who tried to fix the category naming but ended up messing the template mechanic. I just fixed it. Now it should be working fine and the next time User:WP 1.0 bot runs, it should re-generate the numbers of articles in the table correctly. Cheers. --Melanochromis 18:09, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Nice work on the project, BTW. I was editing a lot when I proposed this, but of late I've only had time for occasional touchups. ENeville 05:42, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

GAC backlog elimination drive

This form message is being sent to you either due to your membership with WikiProject Good Articles and/or your inclusion on the Wikipedia:Good article candidates/List of reviewers. A new drive has been started requesting that all members review at least one article (or more, if you wish!) within the next two weeks at GAC to help in removing the large backlog. This message is being sent to all GA members and even members who have been recently reviewing articles. There are almost 130 members in this project and about 180 articles that currently need to be reviewed. If each member helps to review just one or two articles, the majority of the backlog will be cleared. Since the potential amount of reviewers may significantly increase, please make sure to add :{{GAReview}} underneath the article you are reviewing to ensure that only one person is reviewing each article. Additionally, the GA criteria may have been modified since your last review, so look over the criteria again to help you to determine if a candidate is GA-worthy. If you have any questions about this drive or the review process, leave a message on the GAC talk page. --Nehrams2020 23:46, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Dani California GA Review.

I'm thankful the only reason you failed it was due to the Fair Use rationale. I do, however, believe that the images are properly attributed, now. Do you agree by me saying it meets the guidelines to be passed, or is more consideration necessary? If none is, then, I will re-nominate it. If that is irrelevant, then you may simply promote the article. Thanks again, NSR77 (Talk|Contribs) 02:27, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Re:Assessment/Drive

Not a bad idea at all! I wonder if it would be good to move or copy, and then enhance, some of the assessment information to the Assessment page as well. (As well as a sublink to the Drive.)

Now all we have to do is make it happen! (And hopefully, having built it, 'they' will come.)  :) LaughingVulcan 03:51, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

My idea was actually twofold. One was to clear the backlog (which I think anyone could do in four dedicated nights - note that it's about 180 articles for rating. I think, assuming one spends 5 minutes reading each article and really evaluating its' quality according to the scale, that would take about 15 hours for an individual to accomplish. Spend 10 minutes and it becomes thirty hours. Spend ten minutes ten minutes, and it becomes ) But my other idea was, rather than just assessing articles by myself (or others by theirselves,) that the ratings would have more meaning if a small group picked a bunch of articles, each voiced our thoughts, and then took the average (or mean) of ho with a rating change, but I personally feel that working on rating each article in a group would be more accurate. But that was w we collectively rated each one. Or some other consensus-building method. Granted, anyone can come along and undo thatjust my idea. LaughingVulcan 02:12, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Hi! I checked over the template. I think we might have a couple of problems. 1) I think the assessment drive will not necessarily be permanent. That is, any editor can come along and edit an article's rating at any point. So a template for it should be used in the Talk space of the article to document what the drive team members did, as opposed to being merged into the main Fishing Project rating template. 2) Some syntax errors in that template. So, what I did was c/p your template and the fishing rating template, and tweaked it a bit. The result is at User:LaughingVulcan/sandbox/fishassess. That template uses the following syntax:

{{User:LaughingVulcan/sandbox/fishassess

|date=

|class=

|importance=

|reviewers=

}}

or

{{User:LaughingVulcan/sandbox/fishassess|date=|class=|importance=|reviewers=}}

Where date=the date that consensus is reached in the article. class=the class consensus reached by the team, same as fishing rating. importance=the importance consensus reached by the team, same as fishing rating. reviewers=the number of reviewers that participated in reaching the consensus.

I think that some of the paths might need to be edited. The path to "Assessment" should be to the (currently redlinked) assessment parent directory, which should explain the drive and assessment process. The path to the discussion should be in the "drive" "subdirectory."

What I'm envisioning for process is: a) An editor decides that an article would be good for the drive. b) He/she places both the {{WP:FISHING}} template at the top of the Talk, and also the {{WP:FISHING-A}} -or whatever name- template down at the bottom of the comments, with their variables listed but not filled in. c) The editor lists the article in the "Drive" subdirectory of the assessment section of the Project. d) However many editors want to participate, participate. (I'm thinking 24-48 hours in general unless its contentious.) e) When consensus is reached, the original editor (or a scribe,) notes the result in the Drive page, and goes back and edits both templates with the result, probably '''subst:'''ing the second template's results.

Does this make any sense, and where do we want to go with this? LaughingVulcan 16:42, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Looks good! Agree. I'll create a template to post on our members talk pages. What about dates? Start on Monday? I could probably get everything together for then. Length - two weeks? themcman1 Talk 17:39, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
Seems good to me. I'll move it to template space (if you haven't already). Does Template:WP:FISHING-A seem like the logical move point? Monday seems about right. I'd say we should really push and promote it for two weeks or so, then keep it all rolling as an ongoing part of assessment as unrated articles appear on the Project scope. (When I meant "temporary", I meant that any rating assigned is temporary, and that we should temporarily push the assessment drive. But as long as there are unrated articles - and editors who want to participate - we shouldn't lose rating articles by consensus discussion. This all assumes, of course, that we can get at least one or more others involved.)
I'll also look at setting up a base pattern in the Drive space that can be used. I probably won't get to that until later this afternoon, but I'll let you know when you should look it over. LaughingVulcan 18:03, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Aha... We're both so dang quick that we're "talking" over each other LOL... I'm going to be away for a couple of hours. BTW, the project box looks really good.  :) But I would think that, since I took that photo and manipulated it for use in this userbox. :D But anyway, I'm off for a couple hours. LaughingVulcan 18:09, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Okay, did a bit more on both the Assessment and Drive pages, cleaned up a little more on the main assessment template, added a description to the category, and saw your invitation template and loved it! BTW, your Workshop page is still live in Category:WikiProject Fishing Assessment Drive Now it's time for me to go get some fishing done.  :) LaughingVulcan 22:41, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
Edited above comment because I didn't realize that the Category link was live until I came across the page... ;) LaughingVulcan 01:13, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Well, we're off and running.... :) I hope that we will get others to join in. I must admit toying with the idea of supplying a tip to the Signpost to drum up interest. (But I don't know if the system we have will really handle that kind of influx - I'd hate to try and close out 50 in one day.) And speaking of which, I have a closing procedure for each in mind (sorry - something of a process wonk myself.) I'm just wondering if I should write it up in case somebody else starts closing these out. LaughingVulcan 03:36, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Re:RfA

I think you'd make a fine candidate for Adminship. You should know, though, that there will be a lot of editors who will oppose you. Not because there's anything wrong with your record, but because you have well under 1,000 total edits (ppl who judge based on numbers usually want 5,000-10,000 minimum,) only 57 total mainspace edits, a quarter of your edits falling in User (not User Talk) space, and you've only been registered under this name not even four months yet (many set their limit at a minimum 6.) Also, what kind of visibility have you had - will most RfA frequent commenters know who you are? And finally, since you don't seem to make many edits in the areas where Admin tools are used (XfDs, protections, AN, etc.), you will be questioned mercilessly about why you need access to Admin tools. This is especially true for self-noms - they tend to get harder scrutiny.

Please understand, I'm not saying you shouldn't be an Admin - I'd vote in support of a nom, and you are a tireless worker on WP. Just that I don't think most Editors would vote in support on the face of it. Sorry if this came across as harsh - it shouldn't, as I enjoy working with you very much and you do some great stuff here! LaughingVulcan 14:39, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Assessment drive template

Hi! I made some changes to the template in my sandbox, and will move it to the template tonight if you have no objection. The change adds a last variable, "completed=". If the completed field is empty, it provides a note that the assessment for the article is in progress, gives the link to the current discusssions section, and places (leaves) the article in the fishing assessment drive category. If the field is marked (I think with anything, though it should be "Y",) it provides a note that the assessment is complete and directs the user to visit an Assessment Drive Archive page (which I'm working on) to view the discussion, and adds it to Category:WikiProject Fishing Assessed Articles. (Actually I have to set up the category.) The main reason for this is so that we can clear problems with articles in the Drive category (articles tagged with template but not nommed, etc. And it gives us the side bonus of seeing which articles are being assessed and which are done. Take a look at the template at User:LaughingVulcan/sandbox/fishassess2, and I'll let you know when I copy it to template space. LaughingVulcan 12:15, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm not sure if you're the right person but just wanted to let you know that the fishing portal needs updates. I just took the liberty of updating it from May2007 to June2007 but this portal is still lagging one month behind though. I think the "July update" could probably go sometime mid-July as soon as there are nominations and votes for new articles. Cheers, --Melanochromis 03:54, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

July 2007 GAC backlog elimination drive

A new elimination drive of the backlog at Wikipedia:Good article candidates will take place from the month of July through August 12, 2007. There are currently about 130 articles that need to be reviewed right now. If you are interested in helping with the drive, then please visit Wikipedia:Good article candidates backlog elimination drive and record the articles that you have reviewed. Awards will be given based on the number of reviews completed. If you have any questions about this drive or the review process, leave a message on the drive's talk page. Please help to eradicate the backlog to cut down on the waiting time for articles to be reviewed.

You have received this message either due to your membership with WikiProject: Good Articles and/or your inclusion on the Wikipedia:Good article candidates/List of reviewers. --Nehrams2020 23:50, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi there,

Just to let you know, I had started a review on the above article, which had been noted on the article's talk page, at 14:31 server time. Apologies for not noting it on the GAC project page.

After having extensively reviewed the article, I have placed this article on hold, and have detailed my decision on the talk page of the article in question. Apologies for the confusion, but could you please leave a message on my talk page if you disagree with my decision.

Unusual Adoption Request

Hi! Im an English teacher in Toluca Mexico (west of Mexico City). My Advanced B classes will be contributing to Wikipedia as the focus of their English course for Fall 2007. I am looking for people who would like to mentor my students (who will be working in groups) as they do the following assignments: Edit and article (adding a citation), writing a stub with a citation, translating an English language article for Spanish Wikipedia and for the final project, writing a full article for English Wiki (they can expand on the stub mentioned previously). What I would like to do is put a list of "mentors/adopters" on my talk page as a kind of short cut for my students, who have limited time to get things done. The semester begings Aug 6, but the real Wikipedia work wont begin until the beginning of Sept. If you would like to add your name to my list, please go to my talk page and add it there, perhaps with a short introduction, if you like.

Thank you!
