Uploading a picture

Hey Thevardon, welcome! Got your note. I'm answering it now, this is just to let you know I'm working on it and I'll have your answer in about 3 minutes :) delldot talk 15:16, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Now then. My first advice would be to create an account on commons and upload the picture there - that way, it can be used on all wikimedia projects (e.g. other language wikipedias), not just the english wikipedia. The upoloading process is pretty much the same there as it is here. You go to commons:Special:Upload and browse to find your file to upload it from your computer. For destination filename, choose something that makes sense, like "cricket player in taunton.jpg" or something.

If you want wikipedia to be able to use it, you'll have to release it under a license compatible with the GFDL, which more or less means anyone can use it for any reason (if you're not cool with that, don't upload the picture). To release it, you just choose one of the "Own work - copyleft" licenses from the dropdown box on the upload form (whichever one suits your fancy) or the "GNU Free Documentation License" one. The upload form provides you with a thing that looks like {{Information |Description= |Source= |Date= |Author= |Permission= |other_versions= }} And the text at the top of the upload form gives pretty good directions for filling it out. Description is just an explanation of what the picture's of, source and author is yourself, permission would be what license you're releasing it under, I'd go for GFDL. For other versions put none unless there are other versions of the same picture.

Once you have uploaded it, you'll have a page on commons called Image:cricket player in taunton.jpg (to go with my example) or whatever you named it. All you have to do to put the picture on whatever page you want is to edit the page and put this: [[Image:cricket player in taunton.jpg]] on the page where you want it. There's some more advanced stuff I can show you about sizing the picture and placing it where you want it on the page. Drop me another note when you're ready and I'll help with that.

Duplicate images uploaded

Thanks for uploading Image:Cricket player in taunton.jpg. A machine-controlled robot account noticed that you also uploaded the same image under the name Image:1552366.jpg. The copy called Image:1552366.jpg has been marked for speedy deletion since it is redundant. If this sounds okay to you, there is no need for you to take any action.

Copyright problems with Image:Cricket player in taunton.jpg

An image that you uploaded, Image:Cricket player in taunton.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Copyrights

Hi again, Thevardonrushes. I should have been more clear in my previous message. If the image is already published on a website, as it is here, there is a more complicated process for granting permission for wikipedia to use it. Did you take the picture? Did you upload the picture to the viewimages site? Because it currently says "This picture is for viewing purposes only. No reproduction or distribution rights are granted," which means Wikipedia can't use it and it will have to be deleted. If you uploaded the image to the viewimages site, please let me know and I'll let you know what to do. If you didn't, we can't use the image unless you get permission. Hello. The things that we need to know about the image you uploaded run as follows:

• Where did you get the image? A crop of this image can be found at this BBC sport item, for example, which does rather indicate that the photograph was commissioned for official use. And if that's the case, then it may well not be yours to free into the public domain, which means we have to license it as a non-free image.

• For what purposes do you wish to use the image? If it's simply to illustrate/indentify the cricketer, then we run into the problem that we generally only use free images for that purpose.

I see I got it from the BBC Page with Darth Vader thing and I understand not to do that again because it is copyrighted. I am very sorry about this incident shall not happen again.Would it also be possible then to delete the file off of Wikipedia. Re: Questions

Hi. I've made you an archive box at User talk:Thevardonrushes/ArchiveBox, mostly by copying my existing one (shown on my user page). What you copied from my talk page to here were "transclusion links" - basically these include the content of the linked page onto the page where the link is added. You can probably see what I mean by looking at this page in relation to your archive box page (linked above).

Now, the archival bot will put conversations into a new archive page every month, which means you'll have to update the archive box to include the other months. This should be fairly self explanatory by looking at what I've done already.

Finally, if you want to try things out on wikipedia in order to learn how to use the mediawiki software, you should do so at the public sandbox or in a more private sandbox of your own, at User:Thevardonrushes/Sandbox (you'll be able to create this page and do what you want there - it's a perfect place to prepare new articles before moving them to the main article space). OK, I looked at the edit history of Alpesh Vadher. I did see a number of users with similar names to each other. However, they have not been editing for months, so they are not currently a problem. I'm not sure that any two of them had been editing around the same time in the past, either. Sockpuppets are only a problem if they're being used abusively. At Wikipedia:Suspected sockpuppets it says "please be sure that: [t]he problem is current; if the suspected sock puppets have not edited recently, the case will likely be closed as stale."

So, unless you have some other information, I suggest that you post a note at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/surajsamant stating that the case can be closed because there was no recent activity from the sockpuppets.

Also, please sign your name in the section of Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/surajsamant which says "report submission by". --Coppertwig (talk) 18:49, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
