Jupiter and UGM-27 Polaris[edit]

Like the way you've reconfigured the Polaris page. Only one point to make. The USAF Jupiter was not the same design as the US Navy Jupiter. See explanation on Talk:UGM-27 Polaris. Brian.Burnell 16:37, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Customs cutters[edit]

Hi Thom2002, noted that you do lots of edits on Customs related issues, including customs cutters. You recently renamed HMCC Vigilant to UKBA Vigilant. UKBA is not a vessel prefix. This class of vessel is still a customs cutter, and its role has not changed since the Customs functions were incorporated into the new UKBA, nor has its name prefix changed from Her Majesty's Customs Cutter (HMCC). Regular marine photographers get vessel movements from several sources, including this official one published daily by the Royal Navy's Harbourmaster at Portsmouth and other naval bases [1] who continue to use the prefix HMCC. There is no better source than the Harbourmaster who has a legal duty to maintain a log of vessel movements. George.Hutchinson (talk) 01:32, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And this UKBA official webpage here [2] itself titles these cutters as HMC Cutter. Although note that they have dropped the second C and describe them as simply HMC Cutter. George.Hutchinson (talk) 01:48, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi George. Thanks for this. You're not quite right - if you look at the history pages, I actually renamed it from HMRC Vigiliant to UKBA Vigilant (you can probably see why I did this, although I admit it was wrong!). In fact, HMRC, UKBA and HMCC are all wrong for this vessel, and as you say, HMC is the correct title. I shall now rename all the vessels appropriately. Thanks again.Thom2002 (talk) 15:50, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bare URLs[edit]

Hello. By your edit summary for this edit I think you misunderstood my intent when I tagged the article with {{barelinks}}. If you look at the references section you will find several examples of bare URLs being used instead of proper citations. It is laborious to fix these, so I'm trying to get more editors to use the citation templates. Thanks and happy editing! --—Elipongo (Talk contribs) 20:22, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Elipongo. After you added that tag, I went and changed all the bare URLs that I could find, using the citation template as you suggested. I thought the bare URLs had all been removed, so I removed the tag. Sorry if I missed any, although that page is being edited all the time and some may have come in afterwards. I do appreciate what you are trying to do and hopefully you can see from the edit history that I have started trying to use the proper format. Cheers, Thom2002 (talk) 20:50, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that may be the case. And I do indeed see that you're working very hard to maintain the article under today's onslaught. Great job my friend! --—Elipongo (Talk contribs) 21:03, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of The Cenotaph, Whitehall[edit]

Hello! Your submission of The Cenotaph, Whitehall at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! – VisionHolder « talk » 01:10, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know I've addressed the issues with The Cenotaph, Whitehall, and it should be good to go for DYK now. Thanks for doing the initial creation on this - shocking that such an article didn't already exist! Regards, Miyagawa (talk) 14:24, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant, many thanks. Thom2002 (talk) 17:16, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks as well for doing this. I'd known for a long time that the material on this was buried in the cenotaph article, and I'm glad someone finally separated it out into its own article. Carcharoth (talk) 01:09, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:FCO Services.jpg[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:FCO Services.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Cloudbound (talk) 22:04, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thom2002!

Was there a policy that forced your removal of "(Courtesy of Steve Ball)" from the caption of the Discipline Global Mobile article (featured on the DYK now on the Main Page)?

I don't claim that a policy forced my including that caption. However, since Steve Ball did donate the image for Wikipedia's use (specifically for this article, in fact), I felt that a standard acknowledgement (as used in other media) was warranted.

I am inexperienced with pictures, I should note.

Sincerely,  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 16:04, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kiefer. Millions of people have created and/or provided images and text for Wikipedia. However, an acknowledgement of their efforts is not encyclopedic content, and has no place in an encyclopedia article. That's why I removed it. If anybody is interested in the provenance of the image, they can click on it for further details.

Thanks for taking the time to ask about it Thom2002 (talk) 16:14, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thom2002,
Thanks for your polite, quick, and informative response. :)
I had foreseen your answer, but I was wondering whether this explanation was given anywhere on WP. Perhaps other editors have more sense than I do, and so don't include such acknowledgements in the article's captions (when the information is available by clicking).
Best regards,  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 16:30, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Kiefer, I'm not aware of any specific guideline, beyond the general advice in WP:NOT. I had a search, and only found a tiny bit on WP:CITE that says, "For an image or other media file, details of its origin and copyright status should appear on its file page." Blue Water Navy[edit]

Hey,

I removed a statement you added earlier...As a part of its overall modernisation....PLAN is transforming into a BWN or something like that. The section itself is meant to depict the emerging BWN.So there is no need to mention the info again right! Cheers! Thanks! Srikar Kashyap (talk) 16:06, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Um, I rather disagree. The text as it stands talks mainly about the current capability. There was nothing in what you wrote to indicate any emerging capability, apart from the construction of one aircraft carrier (which does not a blue water navy make). In particular, the source I linked to is *very* important because it indicates Communist Party policy. Please don't remove sourced content in this way, without discussion. I'm going to re-instate the text but would much prefer not to have an edit war with you as I think we agree on the general gist of this. Thank you Thom2002 (talk) 16:10, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hey....there is something wrong.I didn't delete the policy of CCP.No!...I only removed this statement...As part of its overall program of naval modernisation, the PLA Navy is moving towards the development of a blue-water navy. That isn't the policy of CCP..is it?...Of course, no edit war intended, we are working on the same mission....:). Thanks Srikar Kashyap (talk) 16:22, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was intending to get across something about CCP policy but perhaps not very clearly! I have had another go, thank you Srikarkashyap. :) Thom2002 (talk) 16:29, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No man...When I edited....I didn't even notice the CCP policy. So I was shocked and amazed when you said I removed CCP Policy.I then searched through history.I then understood what you were trying to say...lol..:D. Srikar Kashyap (talk) 16:33, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can notice..the info I removed and what you added are not same! Thanks Srikar Kashyap (talk) 16:35, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you are quite right, I changed the text in order to be more clear about the point that I was intending to make. Thom2002 (talk) 16:37, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I agree....this sentence now makes more sense than the previous one....the previous one had nothing in it which said that it was the CCP's policy or idea or something like that... Srikar Kashyap (talk) 16:40, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HMG frontbench[edit]

First, your method of trying to delete the article is not correct; it appears you are trying to speedy delete, which is wrong when the proposed deletion is controversial. Moreover, you shouldn't just ignore my arguments. There is a huge difference between Cameron ministry and Her Majesty's Government frontbench. The former is a cataloguing of all people serving in the Coalition from its inception to its eventual end. It shows every role that has existed and everyone who filled them. It is a comprehensive list. The latter is a list of the current government. Full stop. When Cameron gets around to the anticipated reshuffle, every vestige of the current arrangement will disappear, and only the new ministry will be shown. This sort of arrangement is not unique. For many governments, there is a "Cabinet of [Country]" article that lists the current Cabinet or the whole current ministry and a "X Ministry" or "X Government", where X is the Prime Minister, Premier, Chancellor or whatever the head of government is called in the jurisdiction, that lists all the people who have served since X took power. Even for the US, there are lists of members of the House of Representatives and the Senate listing the current membership of each body and the complete membership of the current term, which include people who have died or resigned since taking office.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a list of the current membership of the ministry. It would be wrong to make people fight their way through a full list of all the people who have served, especially once we have had that reshuffle, when the styling of junior ministerial roles will change, making the task of trying to figure out who the current ministers at any given department are at the moment substantially more difficult. -Rrius (talk) 22:50, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I wasn't trying to 'speedy' delete, I think I had mis-understood the purpose of that tag. I'm not convinced by the above arguments, and I do think it would be better to delete the article, but as I don't want to expend the energy on a debate so I shall leave this in peace. Please feel free to remove the tag again, if you haven't already. Thom2002 (talk) 22:56, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I have just noticed you placed the above article for b class assessment and I am not accessing the article however after placing articles there myself I have noticed that there should be at least one citation per paragraph for b class, if this means repeating the same reference four times at the end of each paragraph then it should be done.

Good Luck

That little template at the top is so good on so many levels and in so many ways that, empty or not, it's brilliant. Naturally, putting your name topmost on the list makes you a celebrity in my book :) thanks buddy ! Penyulap 01:45, 11 Jul 2012 (UTC)

Currently a 100% consensus! ;-) Thom2002 (talk) 17:51, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
yes, indeed, that is true :)
That template is a win on so very many levels regardless of its state, however, yes I guess it is the final point to have it filled in of course. Now if it was my block for swearing at ANI, then that's a different matter :)
A renaissance editor doesn't need ALL the questions or ALL the answers, just a great selection of each. In this case, it's the question which is most important, and travelling the unstoppable dynamic of questioning in a manner other editors may follow 'carves a path in the jungle' for other editors and admins to follow (it strengthens every good block just as much). Penyulap 21:31, 9 Jul 2012 (UTC)

ha ha, I was just musing about that myself! I think 'gov' is closest as the money comes from the national governments of the ten actively participating ESA member states. The ATVs are built by a consortia of private companies under prime contractor EADS (which is partially state-owned) and operated from a French-run control centre under the authority of ESA, which is itself an inter-governmental agency. Let's stick with 'gov' ;-) Thom2002 (talk) 21:49, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a fan of that, I mean, if the US flag goes on the services NASA buys, we could end up with 3 flags per soyuz for each of the three seats, omg. Just the Gov and Com or something along those lines, is it too short ? I figure Internet users know what it means, I think will draw the accurate picture.
You've nailed it with ESA and the Gov thing though, I do like that reasoning. (Away, back much later) Penyulap 22:18, 9 Jul 2012 (UTC)
The Gov and Com column made sense to me. For the avoidance of doubt, I've ventured a line of explanation above the table. PS please don't leave, you're just about the wittiest and most helpful person on this psychology-experiment-gone-badly-wrong. Thom2002 (talk) 23:23, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's ok, it is always quite a guessing game how long any good editor will be around, given blocks are rained down upon us at random, like mortars in a warzone. I fight on every front to make things better, and I also help the alternative projects that will inevitably replace wikipedia. By the magic of the internet we can help survivors on the titanic, try and steer the ship away from the inevitable disaster, as well as be on the carpathia, all at the same time. Penyulap 01:50, 11 Jul 2012 (UTC)

There is a newbie who could use some simple help of a spaceflight flavour at Talk:Performance Errors due to Fatigue and Sleep Loss During Spaceflight/Ground based evidence for performance errors due to fatigue and work overload. Yeah, the title sort of sums up one of two things she could use some friendly help with. I can sometimes find it hard to know who to ask straight off about helping newbies, as the spaceflight wikiproject is not really the collaborative fun environment it could be just at the moment, and I worry about recommending it to newbies on account of the BITE they would receive there.

If you can mention her to a few *nice* editors in spaceflight you can think of, that would be cool. There is some effort to delete her work without any reason. Penyulap 00:19, 18 Jul 2012 (UTC)

I would tend to explain Gov first as it is more common, and I wouldn't say cargo for com because of inevitable currency issues (when manned com begins you'd be doing it twice), there is a mouseover and link thing for the ESA, if you want help on that, I can do it. Penyulap 00:15, 18 Jul 2012 (UTC)
