Alison Balsom photo

Hi. I hope you don't mind that I reverted your Alison Balsom pic, at least for the moment. The problem is that it looks like the image may be deleted unless its copyright status is clarified. I wish I knew more about how to advise you on resolving this but if you have a look at its page at commons:file:AlisonBalsom.jpg you'll find some guidance there. Thomas, thanks for the message and for your efforts but it looks like it's still not worked ... indeed it looks like things have got slightly worse in that the image is marked for speedy deletion because of its copyright status. It's a bit of a complex area but basically, although it's a pain for you, it's Wikipedia protecting itself against damage from copyrighted material. If I were you I'd have a close look at what that page it saying and try to get help from an editor well-versed in these things. Please don't take this as gospel but I think that what has to happen is that it has to be released by the copyright owner under a particular type of Creative Commons licence (or one looser than that), so that it can be freely reused with attribution or without or whatever ... but a lot of the protections that are held back by marking it (c)A.N.Other will I think make it incompatible with Wikipedia. Honest, I'd go and seek help there and check up on the licence that is needed. It's a nice pic and it would be sad to lose it but wp just won't allow it in without the right permissions. Good luck! What DBaK said is correct. First of all, on commons there can only be Creative Commons, Public Domain or similar licenses. Copyrighted material, even if it qualifies under fair use, is not allowed on commons. That brings up an interesting point: fair use. Per Wikipedia:NFCC#1, if there is a non-free alternative then a copyrighted version should not be used, and does not qualify under fair use for Wikipedia's purposes. Sadly this means this version cannot be used unless you obtain permission from the original copyright owner. You can do this by contacting the person or corporation who owns the copyright and asking to send you written permission to use the file on Wikipedia. Then, email the permission to Commons OTRS using the instructions provided there and upload the photo again to commons. Sorry this is such a hassle, but as DBaK said, it has to be to protect the Wikimedia foundation. Happy editing, Vacation9 17:21, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Thomas, it went pear-shaped again over at Commons. Please have a look at your page there and see the bit (currently right at the bottom) about emailing them about the new photo.
