James Clark

[edit]

Thanks for creating James Clark (Bible Christian)'s article. Having looked at the LCS photograph [1] there is only one other person that would qualify for a Wikipedia article. Peter Foxcroft [2], [3] [4] Psychologist Guy (talk) 20:21, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion. I've made a start on his article here: Peter Foxcroft Throughthemind (talk) 21:09, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work, there is a list of early vice president of the Vegetarian Society here [5]. We have covered most of them. Sadly some will not qualify for an article. I believe at some point it would be worth updating the Vegetarian Society Wikipedia article with notable members. Psychologist Guy (talk) 14:36, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am looking over the 1886 list of vice-presidents [6]:

I will look up those who do not have articles. Lady Mount-Temple might be Georgina Cowper-Temple, Lady Mount Temple? Psychologist Guy (talk) 16:44, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In regard to Rev W. J. Monk, we do have a photograph [7]. He died in 1896, I will try and locate some other information. Psychologist Guy (talk) 16:54, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice, I'll see what I can do. William Harvey[1] would also qualify for a an article as he served as president of the society. Throughthemind (talk) 18:32, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if a navigational box for the Vegetarian Society, like this would be be good. Throughthemind (talk) 18:41, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes a navigational box for the VS is a good idea. I have created a section for the presidents on the article [8]. A lot of the presidents are missing and need to be added. One contradictory piece of information I have found is W. A. Sibly (William Arthur Sibly), born 14 May 1883 died September 20th, 1959 is listed in Whos Who as being the President of the Vegetarian Society from 1938, however this couldn't have been correct because Peter Freeman (politician) was the President during this time. There is some information about Sibly here [9] Psychologist Guy (talk) 22:00, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maxwell Lee (1931-2005) was a President of the Vegetarian Society but I do not know the exact dates. There is an obituary of him here [10], [11]. After this, the President was probably Paul McCartney. It's odd that nobody on the internet has ever tried to compile an accurate list of the Presidents until myself doing it now. The VC no longer has a President. Psychologist Guy (talk) 00:27, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work on the template. It does seem strange that it's never been compiled. I'll add additional people if I find them.
Maybe we should still add Sibly. It would be nice to have the years served for the presidents and maybe the vice-presidents if they can be found. Throughthemind (talk) 17:47, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will send out some emails and try and find out about when Sibly was President. I have read several newspaper clippings saying he was President in 1951. I am guessing he was President for about 10 or 12 years. Psychologist Guy (talk) 21:07, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've made an article for W. A. Sibly. Throughthemind (talk) 17:16, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your work, you have put a lot of hours in creating very detailed well sourced articles. I am disappointed that the modern VS is not interested in covering its own history. All they have on their website is a single very weak article. It doesn't mention any of the Presidents or vice-Presidents. It's a bit odd how you can have a society with such a fascinating history as this but the modern CEO doesn't want to document it. You and me probably know more about the Society's history than the staff. It's all very odd. People have tried to reach out to them for four years but there is no reply if you ask about its history. Unfortunately their archives are no longer available for public viewing. The VS used to be great, it's a shame that is no longer what it was in its glory days. They used to have meetings with 2000 and 3000 people showing up in halls, and all sorts of regional events and talks. Now all they do is beg for donations. Psychologist Guy (talk) 22:03, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. It's very frustrating for sure. It would be good for the wider public to learn about the history of the movement and the society. I'd imagine many people see vegetarianism as a "trendy" new thing, when it actually stretches back quick far through history. Throughthemind (talk) 14:04, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Food Reform Society

[edit]

On Anna Kingsford's Wikipedia article there has been a claim in the lead for many years that she founded the "Food Reform Society" in 1881. I believe this is a mistake. In the 1880s there were a lot of "Reform Societies" in the UK competing with each other to promote vegetarianism [12]. It is noted in 1885 that the Food Reform Society merged into the Vegetarian Society [13]. This was the London Food Reform Society (also known as the National Food Reform Society). There doesn't appear to be any good sourcing claiming that Kingsford created the Food Reform Society, this source merely states she was a contributor [14]. From what I have seen the London Food Reform Society was created in 1877 by T. R. Allinson [15]. It is likely that false information has been on her Wikipedia article for a long time. If you Google this you find modern articles and books copying the Wikipedia page. Historians have not bothered to fact-check the information. When I have got some more time I will write a small section about the Food Reform Society on the Vegetarian Society article. Psychologist Guy (talk) 21:07, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Vegetarian Society, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The Telegraph.

Vegetarian Society CEO list

[edit]

I have been emailed some of the recent CEO/president of the Vegetarian Society:

  • Maxwell Lee (2000)
  • Dr Annette Pinner (June/July 2006)
  • Dr Jon Green (December 2010)
  • Lynn Elliott (March 2013-September 2021)
  • Richard McIlwain (September 2021 - present)

Interestingly they stopped using the term President after Maxwell Lee, then there was just a CEO of the Vegetarian Society. Psychologist Guy (talk) 13:03, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also some more information here [16]. John le Grice was a Deputy President. Psychologist Guy (talk) 13:08, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will create an article for Maxwell Lee. I am not sure if the other will qualify. Psychologist Guy (talk) 13:22, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
