Great work![edit]

Great work on all the bike articles you are creating. I just added some of them to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Motorcycling#New_articles which was way out of date and contained stuff that was added to Wikipedia over a year ago - so hardly new articles. Feel free to add any new ones that you create and let's see if we can inject some life into the project in 2009. Happy New Year and safe riding! --TimTay (talk) 15:19, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Tim - it will be good to get out on the bike again but sorting out these articles has kept me busy. I was updating the project page but its another step. I have been putting the project link on all new talk pages. Cheers Thruxton (talk) 15:25, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Scott article[edit]

Hi Thruxton,

You have done a a lot of work on this article over the holiday period. However, some information seems to have gone awol in the process including the whole stationary engine section and the short biographical note on AA Scott himself. Is there any reason for this?

I also note that the article now has a slightly reverential tone about it with all refs to the stagnation of the basic design being removed are you perhaps allowing your POV to intrude?

I am working up The Scott Motorcycle Company as a GA candidate, together with Alfred Angas Scott and as many of the Scott bikes as I can. I would have preferred to copy the whole thing to a sandbox area but would welcome help from people such are yourself, so please feel free to revert anything you think should not have been cut - as long as it has reliable references. My view is that the autobiographical facts should be in the article on AAS. I've been trying to get free use of a photo of Scott, as there are some good ones around but the guys at Commons are taking a hard line on this so if you could help with that it would be great. I’d also like you to consider setting yourself up as a user and joining me on the new Wikipedia:WikiProject_Motorcycling/British_Motorcycles as I’m currently the only member and would really appreciate your help Cheers Thruxton (talk) 08:08, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed about the biographical material, but I'd certainly like to see a return of the stationary engine section, though refs would be a little sparse as much of it was written from my own experience (different IP address but still me)- there was a short series of articles on the subject in Stationary Engine Magazine a few years ago and did you see the "Of ports and pistons" piece in 'Yowl' last year? I am less concerned about the bike bits as there are probably many out there who know a good deal more than me on that subject and of course Jeff Clew's "The Yowling Two-Stroke" is pretty definative when it comes to checking facts (I find the various 'coffee table' encyclopedias of British motorcycles can be somewhat less than accurate - let's hope Wikipedia will not emulate them!).81.134.14.178 (talk) 09:57, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Having reviewed The Scott Motorcycle Company again I found that the section on Stationary Engines was unreferenced. We really want this article to meet Wikipedia:Good article criteria so after a bit of searching I found a relable source and have added a referenced section. I also managed to track down and reference the actual patent for the PA thanks to your lead on the 'Yowl' article - when you have a moment please have a look? Thanks Thruxton (talk) 21:20, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Made a few changes, with refs, to SE and other sections which I hope you will approve of. If you want to improve this and other Scott related articles further I would urge you to get your hands on a copy of Jeff Clew's definitive marque history (often available on ebay).
Glad you found the Yowl article - I forgot it was on uk.rec.engines.stationary newsgroup as well. BTW all usenet material can be searched and retrieved through google groups rather than relying.81.134.14.178 (talk) 12:49, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Advance engine[edit]

Hi, well that is an interesting article! Yes, definately aviation related. I've got a lot of books (but not the ones the webmaster used) and I can find no mention of that company, engine or the three aircraft mentioned. Reading the text and the references it all appears to check out. Will do some work on the article (categories etc) and advertise it in the Av project. Cheers Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 21:30, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, hope those edits are OK, User:Red Sunset is a very good copy editor, he just popped in by coincidence. I have added the aviation project banner and navbox and advertised the article in the project, mainly because there are potentially four aircraft articles and an engine article in there. I added some categories and also added the company to the list of aircraft engine manufacturers. If youknow of other motorcycle engine manufacturers that produced aircraft engines give me a shout, I can think of a few, must have a look. It's possible that there are aircraft engine companies that produced motorcyle engines that we already have on WP. You've certainly been busy, well done on all those DYKs. Cheers Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 22:37, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks it's very tempting to start looking at aviation articles (I was in the RAF for 14 years on Hunter's then Hawks - and even a Meteor target tower)... but SO much still to do on the bikes! Any leads on UK Manfacturers very welcome. Thruxton (talk) 19:49, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's a small world! Some articles I can think of are ABC Motors, JAP and Scott, the Scott Flying Squirrel was also the name of their aircraft engine, I have references and specs for these companies and their aero engines. Will have another look at those articles. There is a fair overlap with car engine companies and aircraft engines as well, will take a while but they will all get tied together eventually I expect. I'm dying to promote BSA Lightning (short, fascinating hook for a fun article!) but it needs a book source or something other than a Bond fansite as a source for the hook. A book source has been suggested on the T:TDYK page or perhaps a quick search at Google Books would find something for you. - Dravecky (talk) 08:40, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks sorted now its a great ref - I set a target of 25 motorcycle related DYK's for 2009 but nearly got there already. (My wife suggests this is a good time to pack in but I'm thinking of going for 100 Thruxton (talk) 17:05, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bold print[edit]

When you submit a Did You Know hook, the link to the main article should be in bold print, as you can see by looking at other hooks or at Additional Rule F2. For instance, ... that Bob Foster’s win on a New Imperial in the 1936 Isle of Man TT was the last time that Great Britain won a Lightweight TT? should be ... that Bob Foster’s win on a New Imperial in the 1936 Isle of Man TT was the last time that Great Britain won a Lightweight TT? I routinely make this proofreading change for people who forget or don't know, but ... Art LaPella (talk) 20:06, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks I just forget so I do apprecicate the reminder cos I want to get it right. By the way what's your thinking on Alt hooks? (I'm not clear if they help or just make things more complicated) Thruxton (talk) 08:23, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think one or two Alt hooks are helpful. They can choose which Alt they like best. Note my function is only proofreading, so the only time I add an Alt hook is when my proofreading suggests major changes, for instance when the author's native language isn't English.
