Christian IX of Denmark[edit]

I have just reverted your recent change to Christian IX of Denmark. There were several problems with it, most mentioned briefly in the change summary. I don't think you can add possibly-controversial new material based on a book that has not yet been published. The book needs to be published before it is referred to in Wikipedia otherwise the new content is original research.

Given the circumstances here, where a researcher with privileged access to the royal family's archive, I assume that 1) the reviewer is very trustworthy 2) the royal family would have objected by now if the information was not true. The information in book which I cite in the article has been summarized by several trustworthy national newspapers, who I assume have read the book (The linked newspaper Information for example say that they will publish a review). That is enough for a reference, IMO.

Will the book be self-published? - I could not see a publisher in the review.

With the amount of publicity this book has gotten, the number of reviews in national newspapers, and the privileged access to the monarchy's private archive, it will without a doubt not be self-published. The publisher is Gyldendal, btw [1].

Is the author a notable expert? The fact that he is quoted at the beginning of the review as having said "Holy shit!" makes one suspect not.

That is a silly argument. Expects are allowed to say "Holy shit!" too when they make a big discovery. They don't have to be an archetypal English aristocrat ("Dr Livingstone, I presume") to be an expert. The fact that he was the first person ever to be allowed access to the royal family's private archive from the Second War of Schleswig means that he can be assumed to be abundantly expertly and trustworthy. As the article also says, the author is a Lector at the South-Danish University. He has also previously published another book about the Second War of Schleswig.

You of course need a chance to read it before referring to it anyway.

There are 2 possible cases
1) The journalists have read the book, and are using the info from the book for their articles. In that case, I can cite their summaries as a reference.
2) The journalists are getting their info directly from Tom Buk-Swienty. Again I can cite the newspapers as a source.
Note that the primary source material, Christian IX's private archive, has only ever been read by Tom Buk-Swienty. So you are unlikely to get a second source to review Tom Buk-Swienty's accusations (except the royal family).
Also, the royal family would have objected loudly already if the information wasn't true.

Both book and review are in Danish, we should normally avoid relying on foreign-language references for basic confirmation of material that people may doubt - if there is no suitable secondary English reference the material is probably not suitable for the English Wikipedia.

Non-English sources are is OK with Wikipedia: Verifiability#Non-English_sources. I could not find a good English-language source.
If you think I am somehow misrepresenting the facts, but feel unable to check them in Danish, then post a request for review at Wikipedia:Danish Wikipedians' notice board.

The citation was completely broken "cite url=" instead of "cite web |url=" and there was no reflist definition - this may well have been just a typo and oversight, but we should always look at the article after editing to make sure everything is OK. Thanks for the replies. The verifiability link is in fact Wikipedia:Verifiability#Non-English sources (we all really do need to check what we have typed every time!) and it indeed says that "English-language sources should be used in preference to non-English ones, except where no English source of equal quality can be found that contains the relevant material." However the main reason that no English sources are available for this is that you are updating Wikipedia before the book has even been published. See WP:NOTNEWS which says: "As explained in the policy introduction, merely being true, or even verifiable, does not automatically make something suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia. Wikipedia articles should not be: ... News reports. Wikipedia considers the enduring notability of persons and events. While news coverage can be useful source material for encyclopedic topics, most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion." Wikipedia is also not a crystal ball: "While scientific and cultural norms continually evolve, we must wait for this evolution to happen, rather than try to predict it." This means that we are not allowed to say "I think this research will be notable so I will report it now." There is clearly a feeding-frenzy at present with journalists wanting "their" book review online before their competitor's. We should step back a bit from this to see what other experts say once they have a chance to read the book. Journalists are not experts.
I think you should wait until the book has been published in any case. I do agree that, if the book is not dismissed as complete rubbish, this looks like significant information: you should take the trouble to make this contribution of high quality even though the articles as a whole lack inline citations. The first mention in the article should probably start with something like "Recent research (August 2010) indicates that ..." with citations from the book to establish what has actually been said and citations from reviews to establish some sort of notability until better secondary sources are available. I'm quite impressed with Google's automatic translation of Danish but I think you need to provide a couple of key quotes with translations.
Avoid the rather breathless phrase about "That Christian tried to make Denmark into a German state was not publicly known until publicised by [[Tom Buk-Swienty]] in his 2010 book ''[[Dommedag Als]]''": the information about the book should be in a proper citation including a translation of the title and ISBN (you really should read it before mentioning it), you should take the trouble to create a page for Buk-Swienty if you really think he is sufficiently notable, there should certainly be no wiki page for a book until it is published and clearly notable and anyway that phrase devalues the material, making it look like spamming for somebody's personal research (I accept that it is not in this case.)
This is not meant to be, or sound, negative. I think that all significant new material should be added with high quality from the start, even if the article as a whole still needs substantial improvement. Mirokado (talk) 10:40, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

December 9 Syrian Death Toll[edit]

I hate to pester you again, but you mentioned on ITN that in principle you'd support regularly updating ITN with from significant stories? I'm sorry if that comes across as a misinterpretation on my part, and I hope you don't feel as though I'm making baseless assumptions, but that's the impression I had gotten when I read your response at ITN. By the way, just to be clear, I personally consider 41 deaths to be a significant news story despite not being a record in itself. MSU Interview[edit]

Dear Thue,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and

Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's

Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we

teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community,

and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what

you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community

[[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-

_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my

students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training,

motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one

of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of

communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)

  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will

never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.

  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an

interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.

  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics

review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have

been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak
