Okay. A couple things: First, not everyone has the same resolution/text size/monitor size, so there's just no possible way you can make it so some people won't have to scroll, that's just inevitable. I run 1600 resolution, 22" widescreen, and I have to scroll on your user page, even if the Tango thing is gone. Don't stress about vertical scrolling, but horizontal scrolling is a bad thing, so that's something to watch for (not a problem for you here). Now, second, the table of contents is either above the image, or to the left. I'd actually suggest moving the TOC to the left side of the page completely, to make it visually balanced. Or, dump it completely, it is a userpage, so maybe a TOC isn't required. Up to you. Finally, I can put the panorama in the center if you want, and make it bigger (and, I'd suggest that you upload a new version of that, and crop the black edges out, if you can't do that, I can if you want me to in Photoshop), and then drop Tangobot stuff under it. Naturally, as the page grows, the layout will change, you can move images around to balance it visually a bit better, etc. Anyway, let me know if you want me to fix the image, and what to do with the TOC. Okay, uploaded a new version, I rotated it CW so it was even, cut out the black stuff, and actually resized it, it was over 4000px in size full res, which is just huge, lol. I cut it down to 2500, but a FI only needs to be 1200, so if you wanted to ever get this to featured status, it would qualify. I centered it, and checked the Cambridge page, looks good. It's all right, the coordinates aren't supposed to display in the infobox, but at the top of the article: see the instructions at Infobox UK school. I also had some trouble with the infobox format, so I've added the coordinates in the {{coor dms}} template. Xn4 21:05, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for doing that - my only gripe - would have preferred the active members to have had their original joined date (like inactive and retired) rather than their renewal (2007) date - putting founder at top of the list (it now looks as tho' there's been a coup!) ...Zir 09:57, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Please put Stubs on Template Page

Yesterday I posted the following at the wikipedia talk:WikiProject BBC/Templates page that I created. Would someone please put the following with correct Formatting on the Templates Page under Stubs. I tried to do it myself but had to Revert it.

Re: WP:BBC

To be honest it's not that much quicker to asses articles using the standard AWB (I think there is a plugin that makes it quicker but I haven't tried it, I think there is also a script about too) but it does make it easy to find and tag articles using the list comparer and the prepend function. I have added you to the approved users list so you can use it, but please read the rules of use first (by editing with AWB you confirm your acceptance of these rules and failure to abide by them will result in your name being removed). There is a user manual if you get stuck, but let me know if I can help. Happy editing! mattbr 17:20, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Removing multiple wikilinks is one of those things that needs judgement applied to it, so getting it to remove them all is not really advisable. For example, multiple links to the same article in the same sentence/paragraph is not advised, whereas the same link at either end of a 100kB article is probably OK. Plus there is piping and linking to headings to take into account, as it may not be apparent (to the reader) the same article is being linked to.
Again cleanup is one of those subjective things, and doing all the automatic things doesn't necessarily mean the article has been cleaned up, eg the refs might be a mess or there is excessive bolding or the Headings Have Capitalised Initial Letters when they shouldn't or there are too many links or too few links or there are too many or too few headings etc etc. They are also mostly minor formatting things that shouldn't really be done without doing something else at the same time. Fixing typos is one of those something elses, and I usually run with the edit summary "Typo fixing and other fixes". Don't forget though that some typo changes it makes are not really typos, eg it may be in a quote that is spelt wrongly, it may not be in English (best to wrap it in a language template such as {{lang|2-digit language code}} (if inline) or {{lang-de}} and variants (if the language name is in front) as AWB doesn't fix typos wrapped in a template (they also set the "language" of the text as read by browsers)) or it may be a name. If it is correcting something it really shouldn't be, such as a common first name, just report it to the typos talk page and one of the people there will remove it from the list.

Probably the other general thing is fixing links to disambiguation pages, but it is most useful for doing something specific you want to do to lots of pages, such as adding project banners, adding/removing/changing a category, updating infoboxes, and anything you can do with the find-and-replace feature, and also generating a specific list of articles to work through eg pages that are in Category:A but not in Category:B. You might also find something to do at WP:BOTREQ. If there is something you want to do (within reason), it can probably do it in some way, if not the devs are always open to feature requests. mattbr 19:57, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
For doing typo fixing, it doesn't really matter. I usually pick a page and load the what links here (do pages in different topics so you don't check the same pages all the time) and let it go, do something else until it finds a typo and beeps at me, make any other fixes and save or ignore and then go back to the other thing I was doing and so on. If you want to properly clean up the pages making manual edits as well, then you are definitely in the right place! mattbr 20:52, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, go to 'General' > 'Preferences', tick 'Flash' and 'Bleep', then on the 'Set options' tab tick 'Skip if no typo fixed' and then start it running and minimise the window, then when it has found a page with a typo to fix, the minimised bar thing at the bottom of the screen will flash and it beeps. mattbr 21:06, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
The plugin I was thinking of was User:Kingbotk/Plugin, but it appears that is more for tagging rather than assessment. There is an assessment script described at User talk:Outriggr/assessment.js, but I have no idea if or how it works! I use the ListComparer to find articles, just load the contents of Category:WikiProject BBC articles in the List 1 box and then load the articles of another category in the List 2 box, such as BBC television programs, then right click and convert to talk the second list and hit compare. If you then save the Only in List 2 list, these are the talk pages that are not in the WP:BBC cat and therefore not tagged. After closing the ListComparer, you can then load this list back into the main Make List box, add some basic text to the Append/Prepend box (I use {{BBCproject|class = |importance = }}) in the More.. tab and select Prepend, add an edit summary and go! It should then add the empty box to the beginning of the talk page (move it as required), right click in the edit box and view page in browser, view the article and add your assessment into AWB then save. mattbr 21:36, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Looks like you are suffering from the bug Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Bugs#First lines of edit box not displayed, which appears to be due to the fact I asked for the edit toolbar show/hide preference to be saved in the settings. Sorry! Hopefully this will be fixed in the next release. In the mean time, setting a new settings file might solve the problem. mattbr 22:41, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Shared IP

Hi Tom,

I tried to opened my talk page without logging to Wikipedia and saw your message regarding vandalism to a food preservation article. The IP,124.157.236.149, you are proposing to ban is a shared IP in Chiang Mai Thailand. I happened to get logged on to that particular number this morning when I logged in on my home computer. Since I am on a six party the vandalism should have come from a home user rather than in internet cafe is they distribute the IP numbers the way I believe they do. However I could not venture to guess how one would find out which particular subscriber. I hope they have stopped. RegardsNYerkes 06:43, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Admin coaching

Hello – I'd like to know if you're still interested in admin coaching. If you are, I'd be happy to take you onto Krakatoa with me. I've looked over your contributions and your interests, and I think we'd be a good fit together.

I've been an admin since June 2007, my RFA passed unanimously, and using them had a huge learning curve for me. I've made a bunch of stupid mistakes had many learning opportunities since getting my own mop, and I'd like to help someone who wants to walk on the janitorial path. I'm American, I'm pretty sure that I'm old enough to be your way, way, way older sister, and although I only have one user-interest-type userbox, we share a few common interests.

Great! In all honesty, I did look at the editors "ahead" of you, but several were pretty inactive due to exams or other real life issues, a couple weren't experienced enough, one was going through RFA and is now going through the ArbCom elections, and there were one or two that I believe are here for social networking reasons instead of building the encyclopedia. I think you are taking the same general track I took and have a similar editing philosophy. I'm pretty thorough when I investigate things – I once spent 7 hours researching and reconsidering a 'delete' !vote I gave on an AFD, but that doesn't mean I'm picky or anything. Just diligent.
I've never coached a prospective admin. However, I'm an RN, so I'm a teacher by profession, only I teach patients instead of formal students. I'm an critical care nurse, I've taught certified first responders, emergency medical technicians, and paramedics, and I was a BLS instructor-trainer and an ACLS instructor for several years. For what it's worth, (not much), several of my students have told me I was the best teacher they ever had. I'm pretty good at teaching, and I've taught everyone from oil company CEOs to chemical engineers who hold more than 100 US patents to secretaries to janitors to people who still have outdoor plumbing. I can handle you, buster. ;-) As you will see, I don't take this too seriously while taking it pretty seriously, and I like to have fun. Taking Wikipedia too seriously is why people leave the project in tears. We're not going to do that.
So, here we go – make a coaching subpage titled something like User:Tiddly Tom/Admin coaching or whatever you want to call it, and we'll work there. You could start with a simple paragraph or two about why you want the mop. There are about 1,300 admins and just as many reasons why we chose to trade a lovely pad and pen for janitorial tools, and I'd like to hear your reasons. I do have email enabled, and I'm the one who lately has been handling the autoblocked requests to register new accounts on unblock-en. combining footnotes into the reference section on Ida of Lorraine

Thanks for looking at the barebones article of Ida of Lorraine. However, I'm terribly confused why the footnote section was combined with the Reference/Bibliography section. Was this an auto-change that you didn't see? I was following layout examples from other pages and combining the two section ruins any clarity of reading it. LMK. And you raise an interesting point - we're all beating each other to the punch. When the update rate is low and only one user is using an efficient anti-vandalism tool, things work well. When the update rate goes over 200/minute and there are several of us clicking away as hard as we can, we're tripping over each other and yet there is still scope for vandalism to get through undetected. Most people do not have such a complicated past as your self, you have to agree? I did do as you describe a "minimal examination of a contributor's background " before leaving the above, now struck out message in good faith. This does not appear to be the case with your above reply. I checked your user logs and noticed you had not blocked anyone recently, then checked a edit count tool which made it seem like you had only been editing in full for a few months. Odd. Your counting script must be broken; if you have a look at my contributions you'll see that I started editing in December 2005 and made, for example, about 8000 edits in March 2006, which I think can be called "editing in full". That's 20 months ago. Altogether I have about 79,000 edits; are you getting something different? If so, I suggest you use a different script, or perhaps actually look at users' history yourself rather than relying on a machine to do it for you in future – Gurch 19:46, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, You are correct. I used this - and I know it only shows a maximum of 45,000 edits, but I did not realise that it would make out you started editing months after you did. You have to agree with me that it would have been a tedious task to go through all the pages of your user contribs though. Firstly, what browser are you using? If it is firefox, press ctrl+shift+r. Go to a user talk page, and see if a tag labeled 'welcome' appears to the right of 'edit this page'. Hello Tiddly Tom, I'm a long time fan of Wikipedia, and I have always enjoyed editing and adding to pages for years, albeit anonymously. I kind of regret not having been a registered user earlier - I'm proud of what I've contributed! The reason that I'm sending you this message is to explain to you that I just edited a page, and I looked at the history and clicked on my supposed ISP address, and was dismayed to see that someone with the same ISP number as me has repeatedly vandalised Wikipedia. This is what inspired me to register. Can you tell me, I thought that ISP numbers were individual computer's numbers? I didn't realise that my ISP (and yep, that's them) controlled one's ISP number. And I wanted to let someone know that I don't vandalise Wikipedia - and maybe get this ISP address thing a little clearer?

Illegible superscripts from AWB edit

Hi When you use AWB, could you refrain from reformatting superscripts? For example in your edit of Lanthanide contraction at 14:30 27 October 2007, you replaced 3 by a tiny illegible 3, which I could only read by increasing my screen text size to maximum. I later reverted this manually to 3. Yes, the source code is now longer, but the article is legible which is more important.
