Brian Aherne page edit[edit]

Hi there - It looks like you are relatively new to Wikipedia editing and I want to welcome you and encourage you to continue!

You recently edited the page for the actor Brian Aherne, and added a link to his filmography for the film A Night to Remember (1942 film).

It looks like there are a couple of pieces of Wiki markup that you used in your edit that are (understandably) confusing. Let me mention a few things about those.

First, here is the version of the page when you last edited it. (BTW - I want to make sure that you don't take this as a negative comment or anything, I would rather see 1000 good faith edits that don't look quite right than have 1000 people not want to make the edits in the first place because they don't want to be "wrong".)

Here is the wikimarkup after I made a couple of edits to yours:

Let me point a few of the differences:

  • To add a row to a table, you want to use a pipe (" | ") at the beginning of each cell, rather than the numeral 1. The pipe is found on your keyboard immediately above the enter key, and is what you get when you shift and hit that key.
    • Also, if you see a hyphen immediately following a pipe, that indicates that the row is complete and it is about to break to the next row.
  • To italicize a piece of text, you can put two single apostrophes on either side of the text to be italicized, rather than using traditional quote marks.
  • To get the link to point to the correct article, and yet still read correctly on the page, you will sometimes have to pipe within a bracketed link. The reason I made it look like this: [[A Night to Remember (1942 film)|A Night To Remember]] was that I wanted it to go to this link: A Night to Remember (1942 film), instead of this link: A Night to Remember, which lists out several different articles all about something with that same name (such as the 1958 film about the sinking of the Titanic, for instance).

So, I hope these comments prove helpful to you, and I would like to encourage you to continue making useful additions and edits to WP, and I hope you to feel free to let me know on my user page if there is anything I can help you with in the future.
