Wikipedia Meetup Kolkata Invitation

Not disambiguation pages

Hello, Titodutta. I spotted your name in my watchlist, and am impressed and full of admiration that you contribute so many edits to Wikipedia. Thought I would just drop by and make a very minor point. I noticed you put two articles, Sindre and Goodacre into the disambiguation category. Although they look just like disambiguation pages, technically they are not, and they shouldn't be in this category.

The relevant section in the Manual of Style is MOS:DABNAME, where it says, "Articles only listing persons with a certain given name or surname, known as anthroponymy articles, are not disambiguation pages, and this Manual of Style does not apply to them. Anthroponymy articles follow their own style standards. For those articles, do not use {{disambig}} or {{hndis}}, but {{given name}} or {{surname}} instead."

Since they are not disambiguation pages, they don't go in the disambiguation category. Thought this might save you spending time on edits that will be reverted. Best wishes and thanks for all your hard work on Wikipedia. — Hebrides (talk) 06:29, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. Yesterday, I spent some time in Special Pages of Wikipedia.. specially in 1) list of uncategorized pages 2) Newly create pages. I added category in some 7-8 articles using Hotcat. I was trying to help there to add category. In your article I firstly searched category "Disambiguation Surname" or "Surname Disambiguation", but found these category don't exist. So, I used disambiguation category. I have just seen, you have added in those article. That's the category I was looking for yesterday. Thanks for the correction!
:Just like I added category in your article, I added a category in Darling (Film 2012) article too. In this article I found, the editors have written the whole article in HTML and not Wikicreole. Please go to edit mode to see this. I think the whole article needs to be rewritten. You seem to be an experienced editor. Do you have any suggestion how we can convert HTML to Wiki mark up without rewriting the whole article? I saw an HTML to Wikicreole converter, but can't find that at this moment. Thanks again. --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 06:50, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Try the link to the HTML2Wiki tool on http://toolserver.org/~magnus/index.html – I haven't tried it, but I've used some of his tools and found them very good.
You don't need to put surname pages into a category – they are not "uncategorised", since the surname template automatically puts the page into Category:Surnames. See Template:Surname. When you look at the bottom of the article (e.g. Goodacre) you can see it's in the Surnames category.
There are quite a few templates that include category membership, so even if an article doesn't have a Category statement it doesn't necessarily mean it's uncategorised.
Hope that helps. — Hebrides (talk) 12:20, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

In a few days I'll see what I can do :) WhisperToMe (talk) 13:52, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

You may have noticed over the past few days that the MOTD that you link to on your user page has simply displayed a red link. This is due to the fact that not enough people are reviewing pending MOTDs here. Please help us keep the MOTD template alive and simply go and review a few of the MOTDs in the list. That way we can have a real MOTD in the future rather than re-using (This space for rent). Any help would be appreciated! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 14:10, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Re: Reekrit Serai

Thanks for replying, Tito. Yes, there aren't many news pieces. How can I delete his page so that it doesn't appear as a link to the speedy deletion page? When you click on it in Google, it leads to the speedy deletion page. How can that be removed?

Best Wishes Radhika

Radhikapancikar (talk) 09:02, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

The page has been deleted. That was a cached version, you can't remove it right now, and it is not going to create any trouble too. --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 09:07, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

It's a good idea to work on articles in your sandbox before putting them on the site itself. New page patrollers will tag any new page that needs it. That's the point of new page patrolling. A new page that has been properly worked up in a sandbox won't attract tags. In particular, relying only on the Yellow Pages as a ref is bound to raise questions. The Tea Leaf - Issue One - Recent news from the Teahouse

Hi! Welcome to the first edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

Spring has sprung! Stop by the Teahouse for a cup of tea under the cherry blossoms.
  • Metrics are out from week one. Week one showed that the need for Teahouse hosts to invite new editors to the Teahouse is urgent for this pilot period. It also showed that emailing new users invitations is a powerful tool, with new editors responding more to emails than to talk page templates. We also learned that the customized database reports created for the Teahouse have the highest return rate of participation by invitees. Check out the metrics here and see how you can help with inviting in our Invitation Guide.
  • A refreshed "Your hosts" page encourages experienced Wikipedians to learn about the Teahouse and participate. With community input, the Teahouse has updated the Your hosts page which details the host roles within the Teahouse pilot and the importance that hosts play in providing a friendly, special experience not always found on other welcome/help spaces on Wikipedia. It also explains how Teahouse hosts are important regarding metrics reporting during this pilot. Are you an experienced editor who wants to help out? Take a look at the new page today and start learning about the hosts tasks and how you can participate!
  • Introduce yourself and meet new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. New & experienced editors to Wikipedia can add a brief infobox about themselves and get to know one another with direct links to userpages. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, they'll surely be happy to feel the wikilove!

Hey Tito! Can you please try to work on this article? I created it with an intention to mention the group theatre in Kolkata article, so that that mention in Kolkata can be wikilinked to this article. This article needs to be expanded. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 00:58, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I have added that article in my watch-list and will work on it. Do you want the outline there, that'll be better I think, else we'll end up with a ten thousand word article.
I also wish to work on theatres (eg. Academy, Shishir Mancha, Girish Mancha etc). Currently we have only one article -Minerva Theatre. --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 01:04, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh yes, this article needs to have the outline only, with link to individual groups, if articles on them exist. We do not need to list each and every productions of each group. That is suited for individual group's article (as in Bohurupee). However, the most notable ones can be mentioned in this article. The references that I have used so far are not bad, but if you have access to more book references, that will be excellent. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 01:09, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
In fact, this article can be used to nominate in Did you know. It has good references, but probably of slightly sub-par length. If some more details (names, and a few names of notable productions) can be added, and a slight hint on timeline (what happened in 1970s, 1980s etc. Not necessarily a strict timeline, but just an idea how did the group theatre movement go), I think the article will make a good DYK candidate. Wanna work towards that? --Dwaipayan (talk) 01:21, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
I have started a new section Group_theatre_of_Kolkata#Prominent_theatre_personalities. I can't understand what to do in Groups after IPTA! The stage theatre in Kolkata can be traced back to Ramakrishna, Girish Ghosh, Shishir Bhaduri etc.. Why we are centering around IPTA? --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 01:33, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
We are starting from IPTA because that is the start of Group Theatre. Before that it was only commercial theatre. Group theatre movement started to differentiate from the commercial theatre, the sole purpose of which was entertainment, and to make money. Indeed the commercial theatre in Kolkata has almost died now, and I just added that info in Kolkata culture. If you think about art house films and commercial films, the notion could get clearer. However, the Group theatre started as a movement, unlike art house cinema. Also, there has been change in teh characteristics of Group Theatre, and they often produce productions which is in teh gray zone between pure entertainment and mostly social. --Dwaipayan (talk) 01:47, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification

Hello just saw your message. Can you explain to me what a Disambiguation link is and what the notifications means? how do I fix it? (Monkelese (talk) 03:05, 10 March 2012 (UTC))

My recent delete in External Link Noticeboard.

Hi Mr. Dutta, Sorry about that. I was unsure what to do with the message, as you had already responded to the question and no one else seemed interested. So, I deleted it. I'm afraid I'm going to make a few blunders like this until I get used to Wikipedia practices...but I did not intend to offend. I apologize if I did. Re: Swami Vivekananda GA nomination

Hi! It is a good news that you have nominated the article for GA review. The process is variable in terms of time needed. If there is any interested reviewer, it might be done quickly. On the other hand, it may stay there for months.

I am not much familiar with the current GA criteria, so would wait for someone who does this regularly. However, if even after a considerable period of time nobody reviews it, I will do. In the mean time, I would try to suggest improvement, if any.

This definitely is a good start. Following GA, you can prepare for FA, preceded by a peer review. It feels extremely ecstatic to see someone from Kolkata planning for GA/FA of Kolkata (or Bengal or India)-related articles. All the best.

Bye the way, I have nominated Group theatre of Kolkata for "Did you know" section here. I would suggest you to try to nominate for DYK articles that you create, if they have some interesting important facts, as you are editing and creating articles frequently. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:54, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Great to see the article nominated. Hope it earns the GA status in time :) SASSOTO (talk) 06:48, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.
