KGCU[edit]

I have updated the two pages you made as attempted redirects to KLXX. The KGCU-AM one is fine, I just fixed your redirect. For the future, use the #R on the toolbar to set up a proper redirect.

The KGCU one I have converted because it is the call sign of an active radio station in Alaska. It should not redirect to the KLXX station. I have changed it to address the current station, and also marked it to be deleted because that current station is not notable.

You might look at WP:HELP for some of the markup syntax for things like redirects and the like. Make sure too that you check for current uses of any article titles you create. If someone was looking for the Alaskan station they would be confused by the redirect to the North Dakota one. Thanks for your update to the KLXX article. They look good.

One last point. You said that KGCU was licensed in 1925, but [1] this source says it was September 1926. You might take a look at that and correct it if it's wrong. Shadowjams (talk) 11:14, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As you may have guessed, I'm a new Wikipedia contributor. To be honest, I'm not even sure how to get this to you, but hopefully you'll see it and respond. Hopefully I'll learn the markup mechanics, too.

Thanks for your help on my KGCU redirects. I am retired after a 43 year career in radio, thus my interest in some of the station history sections. You might find this of interest.

Regarding KGCU...it's something that's about to get lost in the sea of call letter changes...and I feel that since the station was KGCU (without an AM or FM suffix)...that's how it should be referenced. Since the current station in Alaska is an FM operation, it would more properly be listed as KGCU-FM.

This all brings up a question. Does Wikipedia have a "similar to" popup list like Google? I don't remember ever seeing one...but it sure would be handy.

You're right about the year of sign on. When I located 1925 (Broadcasting Yearbook - 1969) it didn't sound right...but that's a generally reliable source. Later I found the 1926 date elsewhere, then ran into your note. I have made the appropriate changes.

Anyhow, I worked at KBOM for a brief period in the 1960s, and prior to that at KFYR and KFYR-TV. I also made some additions to their historic content...particularly with a list of 1953-1965 TV personalities on the KFYR-TV page.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to maintain protocol.

No problem at all. I saw the comment you put on the KGCU talk page. I moved it to my talk page which is here;
I think you'll be a fantastic editor here. I'm not especially an editor of radio pages (this one may have been my first) but I do like elaborating on new articles, cleaning up new pages, and generally doing a lot of little tasks on a wide variety of articles. There's a vast labyrinth of wikipedia that you can get involved in, but I wouldn't recommend it. I think you can keep it small and find it a very fulfilling hobby. I would recommend knowing the general "wiki" syntax (it's used in more places than just here too), which is pretty straightforward, and then knowing some of the broad strokes of the whole wikipedia code. Unlike the law, for example, it's more of a general ethos, than an outright code. Some things are in fact coded, but others are more amorphous. This too has its problems, but so far it's worked.
After I post this I'll post a "standard welcome" to you, which I hope you won't find condescending, because you know a lot more than it assumes, but it has some useful links that I wish I would have found sooner.
If you have any questions feel free to drop me a line at my talk page. As a general rule, use article talk pages for issues related to the specific article. Relate issues addressed to specific people at that person/editor's talk page (User talk:BlahBlahUser), and wide community discussions get spread around at their appropriate place.
Sorry for all that I haven't answered your specific question yet. There is actually a naming convention located at Wikipedia:Naming conventions, which might have more detailed explanations. I would want the current call letters to at least send viewers to a "disambiguation" page, rather than straight to the KLXX station. There are a lot of disambiguation pages. John is a classic example. There is a specific format for these pages (one I am actually up on), and they provide quick links to the appropriate topics, no more no less.
If you think that the KGCU page should be a redirect instead then let me know. I can help you set that up. Someone searching those call letters will undoubtedly see your KGCU-AM article high on the list, and that redirects to the current station.

Proposed deletion of KGCU[edit]

The article KGCU has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article does not meet the notability standard for radio stations as it was never on the air or licensed, but was merely a "proposed station". Nothing in the article asserts that the proposed station is notable for some other reason.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
