NT textual variants

Responding to your question at Talk:Textual variants in the New Testament here since it's more a reader interest question than an editorial question. Talk pages are intended for editors to discuss direction for an article or resolve differences about article content.

"Is it possible to find any kind of reference for how many of what kind of variant there are? I mean how many of Ehrman's estimated 400K are spelling errors? I don't know. Just wondering if you experts did."

I'm not an expert, but I can provide some information. Remember these are estimates by scholars at different points in time about 'known' manuscripts and fragments. There is no exhaustive index of every variant. There is a relatively small number of papyri and uncials, a much larger number of later cursive miniscules. Added to this are quotations from early Patristics, writings by the Church Fathers who frequently quote from sources earlier than our existing sources.
Uncials and Papyri manuscripts plus a significant number of Minuscules are indexed. Obvious scribal errors are basically ignored for textual criticism. Spelling errors are certainly a significant percentage; also word omissions and duplications.
