Your edits to Mutual UFO Network

[edit]

I have reverted your recent additions to Mutual UFO Network because they were not supported by reliable sources and were largely promotional in nature. Before attempting to add this material again - noting here that the longer one was essentially identical to an edit made earlier in the day by an anonymous user, and reverted by an editor other than me - I suggest you familiarize yourself with both WP:RS and WP:Fringe. Also, without explicitly outing you, your username suggests that you are the same fellow identified on a web site as a "friend" of MUFON who "believes in the existence of a secret international, human-constructed space fleet." There is of course nothing wrong with that, but if you are that person you should also read WP:COI, wherein you will learn why you should probably not make any additional edits to Mutual UFO Network. Potential COI

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Tlkeller72. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.

As I wrote earlier, your additions to Mutual UFO Network are promotional in nature, and your username suggests you are an individual unduly influenced by your connection to this organization. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 20:59, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I am in the process of updating the Mutual UFO Network page. Much of the data was outdated including the logo.

The current logo may be view at Mufon.com (it's in the upper left hand corner of the home page). The logo is a MUFON trademark and should be in the local Wikipedia.

It is found at: wiki/mufon.com/mufonlogo.jpg

It is unclear how this is to be done after reading the WP instruction manual. How may I get help as to how to upload this logo?

Thank you,

Tlkeller72

Hello Again,

I am in the process of updating the Mutual UFO Network page. Much of the data was outdated including the logo.

The current logo may be view at Mufon.com (it's in the upper left hand corner of the home page). The logo is a MUFON trademark and should be in the local Wikipedia (i.e. not in Wikipedia Commons).

Previously I gave the incorrect address for the official logo.

It is found at: wiki,mufon.com/mufonlogo.jpg

It is unclear how this is to be done after reading the WP instruction manual. How may I get help as to how to upload this logo?

Thank you very much,

I suggest you might receive a response to your queries if you first explicitly address and explain (1) your additions of promotional content to Mutual UFO Network, and (2) your apparent conflict of interest regarding same. Note that WP:COI, which I encourage you to read, has a nutshell summary of "Do not edit Wikipedia in your own interests or in the interests of your external relationships." It is also good form to sign your posts to Talk pages, including your own. You do so by typing four consecutive tildes (~) at the end of the message. To answer your question, I am not an official, employee or contractor of MUFON. Who I am seems to be of little consequence, but I am a technical writer who has been involved with this subject since I was employed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory 50 years ago.

I do not see what I have written as "promotional." I have attempted to add factual material relating to MUFON's history, mission and operations. I have not deleted any of the "Criticism" or "Association with far-right viewpoints" sections. I did make an effort to marginally expand the "Criticism" section. I have attempted to remain neutral. When I submitted my first edit, the Mutual UFO Network page was obsolete. I have:

  1. Attempted to update all of the obsolete information.
  2. Attempted to update the MUFON logo.
  3. Attempted to add citations as requested.
  4. Attempted to add factual history that can be verified using the NASA, The New York Times and MUFON websites.
  5. Attempted to correct a former official's title who is properly addressed as "Professor Allen R. Utke, Ph.D." That too was reverted for unexplained reasons. That fact also can be verified at Mufon.com.

Regarding the citations: I attempted to add one citation which can be found on the NASA website. I also attempted to add a citation from the The New York Times regarding an announcement by the Department of Defense in December 2017. That announcement stated that the DoD had a UFO investigation program, called the AATIP, that started in 2007. That is not my opinion, that is just a fact. It seems to me that this is a significant citation as the DoD does not consider UFOs to be a "Fringe Theory." FYI: the DoD also released a gun-camera video taken by a US Navy pilot of a UFO that he chased off the California coast. That video was widely shown on major TV news programs at the same time as the DoD announcement.

I do not have the prerequisite 10 successful edit to qualify for image uploads. Would it be possible for you to update the MUFON logo? That logo can be found at:

wiki.mufon.com/mufonlogo.jpg

If you have any problems uploading it, please contact me. You can verify that this is, in fact, the MUFON logo by going to Mufon.com. On the home page, it is located in the upper left hand corner. If you need official confirmation, the MUFON head office is at: 949-476-8366.

Thank you,

Thank you for your response.
Your various edits were partly, or wholly, reverted by several editors for reasons presented in each edit's summary. Those reasons, which can be reviewed by selecting the "View history" option of the page, include issues of style, improper use of credentials (for which you were referred to WP:Credentials - it is false to claim it was reverted for "unexplained reasons"), the addition - seemingly twice - of promotional material, the addition of material that does not have direct relation to MUFON (the DoD and NYT material), and the addition of material that is not notable. If you contest any or all of those reversions, the place to take those concerns is the article Talk page. The spirit of WP:BRD is terrific, as it encourages editors like you and me to Boldly edit, Revert those passages (or reversions) deemed inappropriate, and Discuss both on the relevant Talk page. For example, if you do not believe the material you added was promotional, and that the material was removed incorrectly, the place to make that case is on the Talk page. It is through such discussions that consensus is reached among editors. Consensus is Wikipedia's fundamental model for determining what appears, and does not appear, on its pages. Please see WP:Consensus if you have not already done so.
I must ask you directly, once again: are you, or are you not, the same person identified on an easily-found web site as a "friend" of MUFON who "believes in the existence of a secret international, human-constructed space fleet?" If you are - as your username suggests quite strongly - then based upon WP:COI and WP:Advocacy, which I ask that you read, you should not be editing Mutual UFO Network. If you are that person, you should perhaps edit pages, or topics, other than MUFON or UFOs. Editing page(s) for which you have a conflict of interest could cause you to be blocked from editing, and nobody wants that to happen. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 20:35, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
