The best we can do is to use "British" vs "English" consistently. If people are confused by their mistaken understanding that "British" means "English" (despite centuries of usage to the contrary), then, yes, "British" might confuse them. But words do have meaning, and people have a responsibility to learn them if they want to understand and be understood correctly. As has been pointed out repeatedly on the talk page, Lewis was unambiguously British, not Irish, in nationality. We call him "Irish-born" to reflect his origin, but he was not an Irish citizen, which is what "Irish" by itself today connotes to most people. "Irish novelist", as you suggest, is less accurate than the current formulation. -- Elphion (talk) 17:22, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
