Malwa region[edit]

Hi! According to this book:

Ahmad, S. H., Anthropometric measurements and ethnic affinities of the Bhil and their allied groups of Malwa area., Anthropological Survey of India,1991, ISBN 81-8557-907-5
"On the basis of physiography, historico-cultural relation, political background, as well as regional characteristics, Malwa region forms a distinct unit (....) It covers an area of about 160,000 km^2 with a population of 16.3 million (1971) The region extends 530 kms East to West abd 390 kms Noth to south. It includes 18 districts of Madhya Pradesh namely Guna, Mandsaur, Ratlam, Ujjain, Jhabua, Dhar, Indore, Dewas, West Nimar, East Nimar, Shajapur, Rajgarh, Vidisha, Sehore, Raisen, Hoshangabad, Betul, Sagar, and some portions in Rajasthan state, namely the districts of Banswara, Jhalawar, and Pratapgarh (Singh ibid 1-2)"

The Singh reference (which I don't have) is the following: Singh, Ram Yagya, 1978, The Malwa region, rural habitat system, structure and change. National Geographic Society, India, Publication No. 20, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.

I am a bit confused about this. Isn't Nimar considered to be separate from Malwa? Do you have any definite idea of the southern and eastern boundaries of Malwa. Do you have any other references on this? Thanks a lot! deeptrivia (talk) 00:58, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Incidently, the official website of Guna district calls Guna "The Gateway of Malwa." deeptrivia (talk) 01:20, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your input Tom. So what is your suggestion for the article? deeptrivia (talk) 12:36, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Tom, I found your suggestions quite appropriate, and I've included them in the article. I must mention that the area and population as mentioned in the article is a sum of individual areas and populations of the districts that were mentioned earlier in the article, while data regarding birth and death rates was directly available [1]. Since some districts are only partially in the region, I guess it would be good to make a mention of the fact that the population and area figures are approximate in the infobox. The fact is, regions like Malwa, Mewar, Hadauti, etc are not administrative units. The administrative structure works as State -> Division -> District -> Tehsil, etc. That's one reason why it's hard to find data, but sometimes it is indeed available. deeptrivia (talk) 03:43, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

...on districts.nic.in it is Beed. I would favor use Beed, but maybe the other spelling has some reasonings. I will be offline soon, so do whatever you want, I trust in you :-) Tobias Conradi (Talk) 18:56, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

done. I also change the templates "Template:X districts" to "Template:Districts of X" because this is the form for most of the entities worldwide like provinces of X, states of .... and the category and main article are named this way too. Maybe if during your work you come along any "Template:X districts" move the template and if you see "old-style" template inclusions then change them. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 19:20, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
i fixed patan. seems to be wrong info by the creator of Patan, Rajastan. for better overview i started Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian districts/templates Tobias Conradi (Talk) 03:06, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
... :-) ... BTW, I think I started a district template, but the project page allready lists one. But before using it, some stuff needs to be fixed, and I think it should be called "Infobox ...." because this is standard naming. User:Bhalan (or so) made some nice "blocks of X district" templates. I think block=tehsil? Then the conflict tehsil vs taluk is avoided Tobias Conradi (Talk) 18:11, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

refining new goals[edit]

who defines the Top level priority? looking at the history, it seems that you play a part. india's featured articles seem a little dry at the moment. there is a distinct lack of articles related to contemporary indian culture. what is there to show that india's culture is alive & kicking as opposed to stale & dead? even the page on mumbai shows little evidence of living culture. why isn't bollywood a Top level priority? i'd like the world to know more about modern india. for balance perhaps top priority show go to articles about; 'the changing attitudes to sex in india'. other Regional notice boards are more balanced. the irish are working on Father_Ted. the japanese on Education_in_Japan. U.S._Southern on Hurricane_Camille etc. what we need are more FAs that that would make an interesting Today's featured article. surely Top level priority should goto more articles with worldwide popular appeal to balance all the dry articles? Veej 15:26, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree! We should be focusing more on such articles, as our present INCOTW Arts and entertainment in India deeptrivia (talk) 15:30, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, well done deeptrivia! Tom, don't get me wrong. i like the dry stuff too. i just want it balanced with sensational stuff. (i can't believe i just said that. ironicly uk newspapers drive me mad with there constant sensationalism.) i need your advice. i'd like to make my point to the wider group of contributors to indian articles. where do you suggest i do this? is there an area of WP:INWNB that is suitable to start this kind of debate? Hello[edit]

Hi, I have been in WP for some months now, editing under several IP's including [2] before becoming a registered user, and it is remarkable how often I find you and myself editing the same pages -- apparently, we share an interest in Indian history. I am planning to take up an informal project on Indian Princely States; the idea is to start with the political divisions of the Raj, make reliable lists of states based on agency, create stubs and then mould pages on to a specific format and categorisation. I wonder whether we could perhaps collaborate? ImpuMozhi 00:40, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Historical records[edit]

Thanks for the Gazetteer maps concerning Baroda and Rajputana. I have improved versions of the same images in terms of contrast and color-levels. But I thought it useful to have a word with you before I post them to wiki.

I have been hunting for similar historical records and am specifically interested in information concerning Fielding Lucas Jr, Anthony Finely, et al; which however has turned out to be hard to stumble upon so far. Will appreciate if you could provide some pointers in this direction if you can. --rgds. Miljoshi | talk 07:55, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas[edit]

Not sure if you celebrate Christmas, and if so, which one, would it be on Dec 25 which passed or on Jan 7th (I think).

In any case, Happy New Year.

The Rajput article has gone to complete ruins and it seems that people are supporting the "Taliban" version of the history of Rajputs ie, a Pakistani creation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Dbachmann_%282%29

I wanted to thank you again for being patient with me when I first started on Wikipedia and I still haven't got a clue how things work but once I get back from my medical relief work in India, I figure I'll learn more.

Again Tom, Thank you for always being understanding and all the best to you and your family.

About Article: Chaul[History][edit]

India: X District vs. X district[edit]

Long not seen. Some people want to switch to lowercase. You can see my thoughts at Talk:List_of_Indian_districts#X_District . Maybe put your name if you still support upper case. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 00:51, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rajput[edit]

I ended up getting banned from the Rajput article for speaking my mind about an Admin and his abusive words towards the "Hindu"Side, teaches me a lesson that Wiki does not necessarily stand for justice. However the reason why I am writing to you is because I have always trusted your judgement seeing how passionate you are in the Indian articles and also your deep sincerity. I would really feel at ease if you got involved. And the Shivraj and his group all got banned, I was unfortunately included (for no reason except that I protested against the Pakistani side hijacking the history without any references).

Anyways, hope you can do something for my heritage. Cheers.Gorkhali 07:59, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List IPS[edit]

Hi, I see you have listed some states just now under Gwalior agency. Are you sure about Benaras and Rampur coming under this agency? AFIK, even Orchha and states to its east were part of Bundelkhand agency. But again, AFIK, Benaras & Rampur were in direct relations with the UP provincial administration and not in any agency. Regards, ImpuMozhi 00:05, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am familiar with these maps (awesome, esp. Kathiawar) and they seem to be reliable (devoutly hope so; no other sources obtain for many of the smaller states). I accept it, but cannot rationalise it -- can you? The same frame (lower right) also says that Rewa came under the Indore residency in 1933. Whyever??
This also makes me wonder about Tehri Garhwal, the only other UP principality. It was under UP c.1911/12, and apparently after 1936 under Punjab Hill States, but what about the intermediate period? UP/Gwalior residency/not Simla hills? Also, the Punjab Hill States page could do with more clarity on chronology. Regards, ImpuMozhi 04:50, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I get the general idea, only that Gwalior/Indore are to the west and Rewa/Benaras to the east of the Bundelkhand/Baghelkhand agencies which each had a vast number of small states. So it made no sense to pair off in the way it was done. Anyway. Ciao around! ImpuMozhi 13:38, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maidan[edit]

Hi Tom, it was certainly a mistake on my part to redirect Maidan to Mysore region. But I did create the North Karnataka page, to cover the northern plateau region, and distributed relevant text to that page -- its just that I cannot redirect to two pages. So I am wondering if we can agree to delete the Maidan page, after making sure the two other pages contain relevant information? Because the 'Maidan' term is a WP innovation, coined three weeks ago. I googled for "Karnataka maidan" and, apart from mirror sites of WP, found only two sites using the term, neither of which is worth referencing. If you did not reply to the charming message just above this one, it may be presumptuous of me to expect one, but being human I look forward to hearing from you. With bubbling LOL from me, ImpuMozhi 03:34, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have I caused grievous, unforgivable offence? Your last paragraph is disturbing. I never accused you of coining the term; what I meant was that Dwaipayanc did that on 18/March, as indicated by the history of that page; and now, what with the numerous mirror sites, the term will receive confirmed currency, something I see no need for. I can however easily endure having it so, especially if you feel emotional about it. Come to think of it, it is I who might be expected to feel emotional about it, since my family have lived in this precise region for centuries! I am sorry if I caused you pain or surpassing annoyance, but most people would interpret my previous message as an innocuous, inoffensive, friendly consultation.
Although I must say that I did check the 1911 EB online before messing with the page. This and this are the two identical entries in two online EB 1911 sites for "Maidan". Both term it "the plateau portion of the state of Mysore" and this is my justification for the redirect I fixed. Expectedly, there is no entry in EB-1911 titled "Karnataka Maidan" or even "Deccan Maidan".
The Maidan page itself divided the “Maidan” into north and south, and this is what I myself did. The two have generally separate histories, and there are many nuanced differences of culture, dialect, cuisine, attire, even music and caste composition. Even ecologically, as per the page itself, the two have many points of difference, lying within the “Deccan thorn scrub forests ecoregion” and the “South deccan plateau dry deciduous forests ecoregion” respectively. Given all this, many would agree that two articles are not an unwarranted extravagance. But if you feel so strongly that they should be united in the one page, so be it. ImpuMozhi 20:45, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and that is anyway what one would understand from the words "the plateau portion of the state of Mysore". This realization informed the apology that serves as the opening sentence of this whole unwanted exchange. All I meant was to divide Karnataka into the usual coast/hills/north plain/south plain, which are regions defined alike by geography, history and cultural nuance. I still don’t understand why that is such an unacceptable idea.
An official endorsement of the term is to be deduced from the existence of a "Maidan development board" in Karnataka. However, there is also a "North Karnataka Development Board" and there once existed a "Hyderabad-Karnataka Development Board", which was merged with the NKDB, which would indicate that in the governments view, consonant with EB-1911, the ‘Maidan’ term refers only to the plains of old Mysore. However, the references painstakingly hunted out by you refer invariably to a ‘north’ and a ‘south’ maidan, presumably referring to the plateau region across Karnataka. In all events, ‘Karnataka maidan’ as a proper noun is an innovation that could only have developed post-1973. Given all this, I favour the four-fold classification and a rationalizing of the numerous articles dealing with the region; there is a Mysore Plateau and other such pages. India districts naming convention[edit]

Tom, Let me first say, I have great respect for your contributions here. I have to disagree with this particular move. You mentioned you had left a message on the discussion page. In the future, please use India notice board or WikiProject Indian districts to leave messages related to this. It would have been right, if you had waited for a consensus before you went about the move. Some of us feel capitalizing the word does not make sense. Take Impumozhi's example, In a line, <town> is part of [[X district]] is easier than <town> is part of [[X District|X district]]. Hope you would take this into consideration. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 12:10, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Madrean sky islands.jpg probably not public domain[edit]

Hi, Tom. I came across this image. It's very useful for illustrating the relevant articles, but sadly, I think it is not public domain. If you go back to the web page that it came from, [3], you'll see that the article was written by Bob Warshall of the University of Arizona, so he probably is not a USGS employee. It also may have been a reproduction of an figure from Marshall, 1957. Therefore, it probably isn't a work of the federal government.

I listed the image at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images, if you'd like to comment there.

Hi Tom, Thanx for helping with Madrean Sky islands pic status. I Started with birds of SW, Yuma County, Arizona and environs, realized the plants were as important, so I am working on plants of the Sonoran Desert. I have been creating some Categories etc, and would like to get back to some Egyptian artefacts, etc, where I started.
When I was doing the bird page, I realized that the Madrean sky islands biome need discussion, and was happy to find the two pages.
I am planning on some bioregion discussions. In the Lower Colorado River VAlley there are many mountain ranges, some with Disjunct sepcies, from 2 M 2million years ago ties.
And the whole Sonoran Desert transitions to the Mojave Des, and is bordered and abutted by the Mogollon Rim, and Mogollon Plateau. Some species extend into Baja Calif, North, and South, ...mountains, or deserts.
Anyway the SE Ariz Biome, the Sky islands are nice, and thanks for your help. ....MichaelMcAnnisYumaAZ (extreme SW Ariz.)--Mmcannis 18:11, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Raghunathrao Article Cleanup[edit]

Guys this article has some fundamental flaws.

  • Firstly this article does not throw light upon the pre-Panipat days of his career. Those were the most important days wherein he led the Bhuyari into Punjab and Afghanistan.
  • It contains no information about the First Anglo-Maratha War. He brought it all about.
  • Thirdly it seems a little biased.
