 Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City. New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events. | |

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.   The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday November 16, 2019 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.

Hi Tom my name is George Spilich and I'm a cognitive neuroscientist writing an undergraduate level textbook titled Behavioral Neuroscience for Wiley Press. I am looking at your great images of LTP on wikimedia commons and I am asking for your permission to reproduce those images in conjunction with a discussion of LTP. Thanks for File:Reporter and journalist Nellie Bowles.jpg, you are quite right, it is better than the screenshot I was able to grab, and I hope we get the emailed release statement. However, the source is the most intriguing thing - this was taken by Bari Weiss? - Hey yes, I felt bad about replacing your image (but maybe we can still use them elsewhere, or maybe in a gallery section?) And yes, I've been working on getting an image of Ms. Weiss; I was sent the image of her but I don't yet know who the photographer is, but when I get further information, I'll try to upload it. Right now I've found that 33 of my wife's watercolors are up for deletion on the Commons and after they probably get deleted, well my enthusiasm for volunteering here will dampen even further. It took me perhaps two hours to do the uploading, and then with a few typed words and a mouseclick, they're up for deletion. Sheesh. - Heh; it was a momentary twinge, but after thinking about it, I'm always glad when one of my screenshots gets replaced by a better image. That does happen; an article lives for years without an image at all, but then when a mediocre one gets put in, it gets replaced by a better one within days! For the deletion discussion, though,

Sándor Szabó
Hi. I saw that you reverted the changes I made to Sándor Szabó (musician). My aim had been to improve the article by adding biographical details, mentioning his most recent positions and replacing the numerous references with more recent sources. I was surprised to see my changes reverted. Could you explain your reasoning and provide recommendations for improving the article? - Thanks! I've worked on the article again, added a little bit of extra information and kept more of the references. Since many of the references about concerts were from several years ago and he's performed in numerous concerts since then, I didn't keep all of them, especially where the information in them is the same as in other sources. Hi Tom, you have uploaded several photos with a person named Stacey Robinson who apparently claims to be an opera star and an activist. I have not found any person with that name who is either of that. To me, this looks like a guy who wants to be in Wikipedia with famous people. We will begin the event with the debut of a new video celebrating our community. This will be followed by a panel discussion with some of the people you'll see in the video talking about Wikipedia's 20th anniversary, Wikimedia New York City, and the amazing work they do on Wikimedia projects. Question about something you wrote a long, long time ago.
Hi Tom,
I was going to add some stuff to the page for liberal legalism. There's a sentence that isn't clear to me, so I tried to track down the author. It's been changed a little bit, but you were the original author... back in 2009. I know this was so long ago, so not to worry if you don't remember. But hopefully you will be able to clear it up.
"Liberal legalism has also been called legal constitutionalism, such as is found in United States and Germany, with political constitutionalism, which is more typical of Britain, by British constitutional scholar Adam Tomkins."
Does this mean legal constitutionalism is the opposite of political constitutionalism?

- Hi JapanOfGreenGables, don't these terms make your eyes water? Legal constitutionalism, Political constitutionalism, Liberal legalism -- sheesh, what do they mean? I think the terms are fuzzily defined, used differently in different contexts, hard to pin down. So I'm somewhat at a loss of how to answer your question; I'm not a lawyer, just a handyman and hobbyist writer, not an academic. You might be better off checking those sources? I remember being in email contact with Adam Tomkins, years back -- I had read his book, emailed him, and he emailed back. Maybe if you got in touch with him, he could answer your question? My advice would be to not put too much emphasis on the terms themselves but on what they mean. Tomkins thought the US system was not as good as Britain's (and I agree) as the article explains. Here's my sense of the essence behind some of these terms, one at a time, (no two-word conjunctions). Liberal is probably meant in the 19th century sense, of enlightenment values, rule of law, property rights, jury trials, etc and not meant in the current context of people that the American far-right doesn't like (ie progressives, social justice warriors, etc). Constitutionalism is having an underlying structure to the political process, whether it's a written constitution like that of the US or an unwritten one like Britain's. Political, well, dealing with politics. I think joining some of these terms causes unnecessary head-scratching.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 23:50, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

- Yes I've been very open about my connections. I write about a huge slew of subjects, on politics, biographies, planets, fashion trends, history, philosophy, and I always try to be fair. Almost every sentence I add is referenced, and it's all good stuff, it's all real, not made up. So if other contributors go about removing my good content, in essence, they will be committing a sort of vandalism by removing referenced content. Sure, it's easy to slap tags on articles, but it's hard to do what I do, which is contribute good content to this good encyclopedia.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 12:12, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

COI editing
I just wanted to drop a slightly chattier note than I left on WP:COIN. I too first got on Wikipedia to write an article about a family member, so I'm sympathetic. (I did take the article through WP:AfC, and have since made only edits that I believe to be non-controversial; I'm also aware that practices have changed a fair bit since you first started editing here.) If you want to write a new article about someone who you have a close connection with, then I recommend developing the article in draft space or user space and then running through AfC. It might avoid a lot of later arguments, at the very least!
As far as talk page requests for existing articles: you can use Template:Request edit, especially on articles that are not followed by a large number of editors. That will flag it for (eventual) attention from a disinterested editor. It helps to break your requests down into clear pieces. WP:NPOV and particularly WP:DUE are good policies to think through carefully before an edit request, as they can be tricky for someone close to a subject.
I agree that assessing WP:COI can be a matter of judgement. I do not mean any ill-will when I say that I would expect to see better judgement from an experienced editor like yourself. I surely believe that you can distinguish between family members and Fuddruckers! I don't think that you want to suggest that other editors need to closely examine all of your edits?
