WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Poland Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and Canada Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. We are currently seeing concern about the amount of time people have to wait for reviews, especially at GAC- if you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. GA Review

Hi. I have nominated Majura Parkway for GA. I tried to address all the feedback in the failed review at Talk:Majura Parkway/GA1, and double checked to make sure it complied with GA criteria. As I'm a still learning contributor as far as GAs go, and I know you have a lot of experience with GAs/FACs. I was wondering if you could review Majura Parkway. (I have also asked User:Wizardman, User:Nick-D and User:Hawkeye7 if they could review.) I would like to improve my ability to get through GA faster, increase my understanding of the GA criteria, and would appreciate a comprehensive review. -- Nbound (talk) 11:17, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Better source request for File:EMK eulogy of RFK.ogg

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 21:06, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Could I trouble you for advice?

Hi. I was wondering if you would do me a favour. I've not been through the FA process in a very long time, and I think Superman lost its star a while back. I'm looking to get Crystal Palace F.C. and History of Crystal Palace F.C. up to FA level in time for the new football season because I'd like to see if I can get one of them on the main page in time for the new season which starts Saturday 17 August 2013. What steps do I need to take, and would you be prepared to comment at Wikipedia:Peer review/Crystal Palace F.C./archive1 or give a Good Article review of History of Crystal Palace F.C.. Appreciate any pointers you can spare the time to give. Thanks, Hiding T 14:23, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the help. With Crystal Palace F.C. I looked at other Football Featured Articles and adopted the style and length they had, so I hope it compares well with Aston Villa F.C., Arsenal F.C. and particularly Norwich City F.C. who are a club of similar stature. With the offer of a GA review, I guess I am in a hurry so while I appreciate the offer I'll have to pass. Is my goal realistic, to try and get these featured and on the main page in just under six weeks? Do I have to go through the Good Article process first or can I just go and nominate for FA now? Blue dress

Hey, it wasn't whitewashing, just something that I'd come across fairly regularly when it came to AfDs. Just because a site isn't outright blacklisted doesn't mean that it's usable as a reliable source. It's actually a pretty common thing that comes up at the reliable sources noticeboard, as people frequently ask about its usability. The problem is that since it is considered a tabloid (at best) or an attack paper that has fabricated stories (at worst) for the most part, what it can be used for is fairly slim. See this, this, and this. Basically my point is that it's such a point of contention when it comes to sources that when it comes down to it, it's not something you should really count on as far as saving an article goes. Maybe there's no official consensus, but it'd be near impossible to use it to really save an article because a vast majority of editors agree that the newspaper is of exceptionally low quality when it comes to reporting stuff. I think it's actually considered to be worse than Fox News, which is saying a lot. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 14:35, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

Tony, hang in there. You've got some very clear ideas about what's best for WP:FOUR, and I greatly appreciate all that you've done for content improvement, but the above demonstrates that you're currently out of step with things. I value you, and I don't want to see this dispute end your curation of a unique and compelling award. Let me know if I can help mediate anything. Cheers, Jclemens (talk) 06:12, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
I don't know that the ANI and the block indicates that TonyTheTiger is "out of step" with anything, unless being disconnected from a cabal of crazyiness by out of control administrators counts. IMHO, the ANI proceeding and the Four award Talk page seemed to show that TTT was victim of some crazyness, with negative jabbing and poor behavior by others within the ANI. TTT reverting clearly-out-of-order changes to the Four Award page seems justified as removal of what is effectively vandalism, IMHO. I think TTT being blocked is awful. I am personally rather ashamed of what a lot of Wikipedia has become; i no longer am willing to recommend to others that they should consider contributing, because of the predictably awful treatment they will likely receive. Turning on solid contributors like TTT who administers a purely positive award system, is just an awful example. Blaming TTT for being out of touch with a crazy, harassing clique of ANI frequenters, is, well, unfair. --doncram 19:32, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Re: Wikipedia e-mail

The problem wasn't in the |four= parameter, the problem was that Crisco had accidentally filled in |action1result= wrong. The documentation for {{Article history}} says that the "result" for a GAN action has to be one of either listed or failed, but Crisco had put promoted instead. Therefore, the part of the template that looks for possible 4-award articles didn't recognize this one.

I may be able to update it to recognize "promoted" as well as "listed" (even though that's not the correct way to fill out the template). rʨanaɢ (talk) 18:11, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I just want to introduce myself and let you know I am delighted to be reviewing the aging in terms of good article nominations but wonderfully written article of which you have been the main editor, with an astonishingly high number of quality citations: 2012–13 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Bus Stop

I had no idea you were blocked. Neither you nor Hiding were responding, so I assumed the both of you were just watching from the sidelines.

Bus Stop has twice reverted his responses to my last comment. I have no idea if s/he still intends to respond, but as of right now, there isn't anything for me to respond to. Curly Turkey (gobble) 21:07, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

I'll try to find the time in the next day or two to look over the article again. I've wasted so much time "debating" Bus Stop that I have no idea what state the article is currently in. Curly Turkey (gobble) 06:52, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

DYK Question

Hello, I'm hoping you can help with this question (seems everyone at DYK is offline). Would the WBSC (AM) article be eligible for DYK in it's current state? I have updated the article with a TON of information, but not sure if it is 5x or not. Thanks in advance. - NeutralhomerTalk • 08:07, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 July newsletter

We're halfway through this year's penultimate round, and the competition is moving along well. Pool A's Canada Sasata (submissions) currently leads overall, while Pool B's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) is second. Both leaders are WikiCup veterans, and both have already scored over 600 points this month. If the round were to end today, London Miyagawa (submissions), with 274 points, would be the lowest-scoring participant to make it through. This indicates that participants will need a score comparable to last year's (573, the highest ever) to qualify for the final. The high scores this year are a testament both to the quality of participants and to the increased focus on significant content (eligible for bonus points) in this year's competition. So far this round, both Sasata and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) have made up over half of their score through bonus points, with, for example, high importance FA koala earning Sasata a total of 440 points (from a multiplier of 4.4) and high-importance GA sea earning Cwmhiraeth a total of 216 points (from a multiplier of 7.2). Other articles on important topics submitted this round include a featured article on the Norman conquest of England by Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), and good articles on Nobel laureate in literature Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate in physics Hans Bethe, and the noted Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryū. These articles are by Poland Piotrus (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) and Sturmvogel_66 respectively.

Other than that, there is not much to report! If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
