Thank you, but I feel fully justified in my edit summary comment (1) why do we have general references? They were already in the footer, yet (2) in your usual "I'm right, the rest of you are wrong" attitude, your edit summary was your normal vindictive "speculation" style (have you actually read your edit summaries?) (3) which seems to suggest an attitude at preset beyond encyclodpedic and verging specifically in edit summaries of pedantic. I don't know you except from your edit record, but it seems that much as though you could add much to the project, your edit summaries at present are excluding co-operation and engagement with others editors - specifically, excluding particularly new editors. Perhaps you are holding on too tight, and should review your edit summaries? Accuracy and referencing yes, but does that need to come with a present attitude of non-co-operation on a human scale and vindictive exclusion? The problem with general refs is that there is no way of knowing which ref(s) support which sentence(s) in the text. There are six books listed under "Further reading" - how am I supposed to know which one to request from my local library?

It is easily demonstrable that Swindon is not the mid-point - the station is at milepost 77+1⁄4, and since Bristol T.M. is close to mp 118+1⁄2, that places Swindon 65% of the way along the line - almost two thirds. The true mid-point is close to mp 59+1⁄4, which is between Steventon and Wantage Road. I have checked through

• MacDermot, E.T. (1927). History of the Great Western Railway, vol. I: 1833-1863. Paddington: Great Western Railway. pp. 120–121.

in which we find a letter from Gooch to Brunel, dated 13 September 1840, containing the reasons for the choice of Swindon: it is too lengthy to reproduce here, since it occupies 1.5 pages of small type - but it does include several relevant points: it is the junction for Cheltenham; it was the point where the gradients change - in particular, it is close to the bottom of Wootton Basset incline; it was close to a canal. There is nothing about it being chosen as the mid-point for the line - indeed, Gooch notes "an apparent inequality of distance or duty for the engines to work", and gives "the actual distances are as 76+1⁄2 to 41". He later observes that since Reading is "36 miles, the next distance, to Swindon, would be 41 miles, and on to Bristol, another 41" - so Swindon is a mid-point, but between Reading and Bristol, and not for the line as a whole, which is what was implied by the text that I removed.

There are a number of people that (for whatever reason) are ignoring WP:NOR and WP:NOT#OR. Offering unsourced opinions on why something was done in one way as opposed to another is original research. What you don't see when I am reviewing my watchlist is the large number of edits made by others which go without comment from myself. If you can not see the references beyond your opinion, then why edit an encyclopedia that relies on its credibility through stating third party references? You can argue mid-point in your opinion until the cows come home, but at the end of the day that's your opinion not a referencerable fact. As the references and article states, the "mid-point" in not defied by Gooch as the physical distance mid-point, but the engineering journey mid-point between the smooth journey from London to Swindon, and the relatively steep journey to Bristol thereafter. Early locomotives were not reliable, needed changing, and like all steam powered devices needed a supply of water. But that's the whole point you are missing here - you are reading the facts (distance not journey) from your perspective, not from the written references. That's the whole point that you are missing here, and its a difficult one to grasp - and it shows in your far too aggresive edit summaries. Rgds, - Trident13 (talk) 14:15, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Do you think the article should be AFD'd? The Jewish Chronicle looks to be the only good source. The others are primary, about the company not him, or is the BusinessWeek profile from its database, which I think just regurgitates official profiles. Thank you for your message - in light of your tone, can you please read WP:AGF. The WP:MOS note re cats on redirect pages came in over 2 years ago. I used to add cats onto such, but someone who was trying to be an editor quickly pointed out the change to me. Secondly, the categories that you are trying to add back are all presently listed in the article to which the redirect points to. Hence, both the redirect and the actual article are listed in all three cats. The WP:MOS directive says that you should only add cats if the redirect name adds to the wider categorisation of the subject. As the three cats are repliacted, what's the point? Congratulations on re-opening this and related cans of worms. I applaud your "rewrite the darned thing! We will ALWYS trip over ourselves if we keep up the Yankification of Wikipedia - same words have different terms in different parts of the world". Thanks for your message - I hope that I find you well! I think certain cans of worms are worth reopening - have a look at the definition of Biscuit, which had become in the seemingly continual process of Yankification as something which was definitively (and not to be argued with) soft doughy objects in gravy. We now have Biscuits (European) and Biscuit has become a big-link/virtual disambiguation page. If you read the German and French Wiki articles on the same Coupe de Ville subject (translations available via Google), then they follow the same form as I did in the rewrite - hence why I did as I did to improve the article. These accept that the words can have different interpretations in different countries - why should we as an encyclopaedia be afraid of this? As a Brit (much as though I spent 20 years working in North America), I haven't got a clue what a Town Car is above a Lincoln model. If you ask me to define an open front topped/enclosed rear car then I'd call it a Sedanca de Ville, as (a) I own one, and (b) the UK dealer chap who I bought it from described it as such, as that's what the Rolls Royce/HJ Mulliner build sheet described it as such. I also accept that if I went to France and Germany, they would define it as a Coupe de Ville, which would have a very different interpretation in North America (hence why I added a North America section in the rewrite - plus it keeps them happy). I personally don't think that if there are major reference sources that clash we should be worried as an encyclopaedia to provide reader guidance around the wording - the article before I started my rewrite didn't even define the term as French language in origin! I think that there is a lot more to go on the article, but the opportunity here is in (1) the definition of what the word means and then (2) how then each area of the world interprets it. Thanks for your message - I hope that I find you well! I don't seek a 1on1 confrontation with Jimmy Wales, nor do I wish that to be the outcome of the post on my FP. My great disappointment with Jimmy Wales choice on that occasion - and on numerous occasions since - was that it cut straight across the rules and accept practises of Wikipedia, something which Jimmy claims to live by. The reality is clearly different, in that (1) he thinks he can cut across any Wiki rules, for what ever reasoning, and that (2) a series of underlings hence go forth and do his work, in the vain hope that they may drink from the same table. Jimmy's upset with my edit was further fuelled in that I had chosen to reference the Daily Mail, which as he is someone who is presently married to a Blairite-Labour insider, he considers a sacrosanct sin (if you follow the mentioned above underlings, you will note that they hate the DM even more as part of their commitment/pledge to the JW cause. The DM also on an at least annual basis heavily critic's Wikipedia, most often on accuracy. But the depth of hate between the two organisations goes beyond the public evidence). I fully accept that I made an error in this particular edit, but then so did the newspapers who printed the story (DM, Telegraph, Observer - I have copies of them all), as it was based on a "revenge"-powered false press release pointed towards the victim, who was later compensated by all of the above media outlets. However, does my following of the Wiki rules and quoting references (which I fully accept turned out to be false) justify Jimmy's choice to (1) cut across the rules of Wiki, and (2) send out judgements on others? As personally the rules of Wikipedia are written on a far more collaborative principles - possibly even with socialist aroma's - Jimmy's chosen action illustrated to me the duplicity of the rules here: hence my warning to others, that however you may view the rules here, the "popular/powerful" consider themselves above and beyond them. I have soft and hard copies of all of the above mentioned documents and the exchange on Jimmy's talkpage, but as I said I don't seek a confrontation with Jimmy or anyone here - much as though he broke the rules. As an article creator I accept that copyvio is a risk - it will always a balance between referencing and original reasearch, and in referencing if you follow the same timeline particalarly for historic articles, then copyvio is a potential outcome. But as for being "awash"? In the early days perhaps, but in recent years? I conclude the tone of your message is purposefully exaggerated - trying to impress someone? I was also dropped a private message by a more experinced Adminstrator who advised me that the settings on the copyvio bot had been tightened, and they noted your awash comment as poorly thought through. Well, the risk is sort of increased when you copy-paste content directly from a copyright source into a new article, wouldn't you say? Thanks for your comment. I note your concerns, but I am fully aware of what copy and paste is versus creation, which can also verge towards original research. If you highly reference something back, then as an article creator you are always playing with CopyVio issues. On this occasion I got it wrong by not following my preferred process (1) my usual form is to create on stubpages or on my own private wiki, and then test - this one I went straight live to (2) you also always play a greater risk with historic articles - time lines are hard to move from, hence that's fixed. I estimate from my own tests by 30% (3) you rely on few sources/singular sources to create a full time line.
