YouTube videos are not acceptable sources in Wikipedia articles. Factual or not, they're primary sources, not independent media, so they're not allowed under any circumstances. Bearcat (talk) 00:05, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

It has nothing to do with "censorship" and everything to do with the facts that (a) YouTube is not an independent media source, and (b) Wikipedia cannot link to copies of reference content on sites that aren't actually the legal copyright holder of that content. CTV News is an acceptable reference, but the reference has to be to CTV News itself: that can be a weblink to a transcript or a video clip on their website, or it can be an unlinked citation to CTV in the format "Title of news report". CTV News Channel, Date. — but it cannot be to a YouTube copy of CTV content, because (a) the YouTube channel that the video was uploaded to is self-published by Mr. Wrzesnewskyj or his staff, and (b) CTV holds the copyright on it, not YouTube. I hear you thanks, but it seems these policies kill reference of truth. Right now according to you/wikipedia, anyone can go into the article on Borys and say "reference needed" to all the quotations (which were taken from the videos) and or delete them. Say for example, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin's comments on Borys are subject to deletion because there is "no acceptable wikipedia reference":

Regardless whether the content is self-published by Mr. Wrzesnewskyj or his staff, Borys and his staff are not the authors of that content. Rather, the former Canadian Prime Minister, Paul Martin, is the author of that content because he is speaking in the video and that is what is being referenced.

Sure fine, if some blowhard skews things ridiculously, absolutely, cut that nonsense out, but links referencing YouTube clips?

You can reference the statements to the actual media report: for instance, if the YouTube video is a clip of a CTV News report, you can cite CTV (not YouTube) as the source. One thing you may need to realize is that there's no requirement for our sources to necessarily be available on the web — we can cite books, we can cite old newspaper or magazine articles that haven't been republished on the web, we can cite television or radio reports that haven't been reposted to the web. But we can't cite to reposts of copyrighted content on websites that aren't themselves the holder of that copyright (like a video reposted on YouTube.) Bearcat (talk) 22:25, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Question: How can Borys' entry quote Paul Martin - spoken by Martin himself, if the source is not allowed to be referenced? Without a reference, then anyone can delete that section of Borys' entry citing "no reference" when in fact there is one.
