The Sega Project Invitation

[edit]

Hello, Unknown the Hedgehog. I can see that you're a Wikipedian interested in Sonic the Hedgehog. If you're interested, I think I know a WikiProject where you would be comfortable working and sharing ideas with other Wikipedians for editing Sonic articles and other Sega articles in general. It's called WikiProject Sega and we're an expanding project. Please take this message as an invitation to join, as well as this stylized invitation. Should you choose to accept this invitation, just add your name to the members list. Thank you in advance for your consideration. RE:Sonic Profile

[edit]

I remember who you are, don't worry about that. I'm usually pretty good at that. Anyway, I'll have to pass on the profile image, but I do have a suggestion for you: you might want to make sure that any image you have has a license tag on it, such as GFDL, public domain, etc. Otherwise it can be deleted since no copyrighted images can be on your userpage, and if it's not tagged, they'll think it's copyrighted. Just a little tidbit of your time. Red Phoenix flame of life...protector of all... 23:23, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Still, I recommend you list it as public domain, then, if there's no copyright. This is just a technicality so that way you don't get your image pulled by someone. Red Phoenix flame of life...protector of all... 02:42, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the offer but I'll pass.Fairfieldfencer FFF 08:03, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There, I've fixed it for you. I added {{pd-self}} to the image, which is the official way to mark public domain on Wikipedia. Your image should be fine now. Red Phoenix flame of life...protector of all... 15:41, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sonic

[edit]

Thanks for the offer, but as I've said to a couple of others, I'm not actually a big Sonic fan. I loved Sonics 1 to 3 on the Genesis/MegaDrive, and had the misfortune to get Sonic '06 for the PS3, but other than the upcoming Unleashed - which I am actually hoping is going to be a great game - Sonic features little in my games or interests lists. :) Synergy/Blades (Talk) 02:04, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with upload of Image:Unknown the Hedgehog.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Unknown the Hedgehog.png. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or what the copyright status is. We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.

To add this information, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the information to the image's description. If you need help, post your question on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 03:05, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Image:Sonic Unleashed Speed Boost.png, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

No rationale is provided, nor fair-use template used; it is a full-resolution (non web-res) image that has been ripped from a non-free and copyrighted source.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on [[Talk:Image:Sonic Unleashed Speed Boost.png|the article's talk page]] explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Synergy/Blades (Talk) 21:43, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sonic Unleashed 2D

[edit]

Here you go, I've done this one for you: 200px|thumb|left|Side-scrolling gameplay in Sonic Unleashed.

I tried to overwrite the one you uploaded with the new one, but it wouldn't let me, since I uploaded a .JPG instead of a .PNG as you uploaded. Perhaps you can use it to see where you went wrong re: tags, licensing, size etc.? Anyway, feel free to use it in the article. If you decide not to, it will be deleted as orphaned after five days anyway, so no worries. Synergy/Blades (Talk) 22:44, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sonic Unleashed edits

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your edits to Sonic Unleashed. You mentioned that you were new to Wikipedia, so let me explain why I had to take out your edits. As an encyclopedia focussing on accuracy rather than the latest and greatest information, we do not reference fan sites for information, and you explicitly referenced tssznews.com, which is a fansite. Please see the following that has already been discussed on the Unleashed talk page: "Camp Sonic", "CampSonic scans".

Simply put - you can use these fansites as an "intermediary" to browse for information, but realise that it could be unreliable. If you actually want to add the information on these sites to the article you will need to: a) make sure that where the fansite got its information is a reliable source and, once you have done that, b) come up with the original, first-hand source the fansite got the information from, and place these in either the cite web or cite journal template (for websites and magazines, respectively) for a reference in the article. We cannot allow references to the intermediary, second-hand source - the fansite - in the article itself. Synergy/Blades (Talk) 13:44, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:

[edit]

Unfortunately, I can't help you, and this is why: The image you're talking about, even though you made it, is derivative work and is thus copyrighted by Sega and Sonic Team, not you. Therefore, the image is copyrighted, not free. Might I recommend you try a spin off of this image instead with a recolor?

While it's pretty apparent that it is meant to be an image of Sonic in a ball, it is composed of simple geometry and is thus in the public domain. Try to go with something simpler, it fits with copyright laws better. I'm not saying anything about your other pic on your userpage because I think it is different enough that it's public domain (note that Sega might think otherwise, though). Hi, Unknown the Hedgehog. I added a {{clear}} template below your userboxes because I saw what userboxes do with your headers. I hope this helps you, and if you don't like it, feel free to revert it. Thanks. Red Phoenix flame of life...protector of all... 05:05, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

[edit]

Hey, Unknown. I moved your Shadow the Hedgehog userbox to User:Unknown the Hedgehog/Black and Red Circle to better comply with Wikipedia policy about userboxes. Generally, most userboxes don't belong in the template namespace unless it's something for a WikiProject or something major like that. Anyway, you can still use the userbox like a template, all you have to do is enter {{User:Unknown the Hedgehog/Black and Red Circle}} instead. Hopes this helps you out a bit. Re:Star Fox

[edit]

You can use any free image in a userbox. Free images include anything licensed under the GFDL, Creative Commons, or released into the public domain. So technically, yes, you can use Creative Commons images in a userbox.

As for that particular image, I don't know what to make of it. I think it might actually be copyrighted on the basis of derivative work, but I can't be sure. Copyright law is awful tricky, and just because I know something about it doesn't make me an expert in every situation. I would be wary of anything made to look like something else, but there's nothing wrong in trusting in that particular image until it is deleted. I was thinking maybe the image you uploaded for your infobox might have been derivative, but it looks different enough (like our Sega Project logo) that it would probably escape copyright. RE:the Mario Userboxes

[edit]

Having read that speedy deletion issue below, before I comment on anything else, I want to remind you to make sure that any userbox/whatever else you make that isn't an article should go into your userspace (i.e. User:Unknown the Hedgehog/Your page title here). Your userspace can only be noted by the User:Unknown the Hedgehog being on there.

As for the boxes themselves, first off, are you not sure that the blue text on red isn't hard to read? Because it really makes my eyes hurt. You can change the color of text by adding <font color="XXXXXX">Your text here</font>. For example, my name, Red Phoenix. As for colors, you can use any HTML/CSS color code, denoted by a combination of numbers 0-9 and letters A-F (also known as the base 16 system of numbers). See web colors for some color suggestions and codes. But I'm not going to criticize, since I know you want comments on the image.

There's nothing wrong with an image being Creative Commons or GFDL. It's still a free image if you made it, just like anything in the public domain, and if you didn't, all you have to do is credit the original author and it's still free. With these particular images, though, I would be afraid of possible derivative work violations. I'm not sure though, because that's a pretty simple image. For now, I would say it's fine, but I can't be 100% sure. You see, anything that you make that is deliberately modeled after a copyrighted image and it's pretty apparent that it's of a copyrighted image (like if you drew a picture of Shadow the Hedgehog by hand or something like that), then the image is copyrighted by the people who own the original image, which would be Sega in the case I just mentioned. This is called derivative work. Now, as for the question mark box, it may be too simple to be classified as derivative work, but I really can't be sure. While I'm on the subject...

[edit]

I can see you're probably going to need a lot of help getting started here on Wikipedia. Don't take it as a criticism, it just comes with being new. Trust me, I was new once, and I know what it feels like to be confused about a lot of things. Given that we share the same interests, it seems, I was wondering if you would like me to adopt you as a user. There's a program called the Adopt-a-User program, which is basically a program that pairs experienced members with newer ones. Basically, I would serve as a mentor whenever you have questions (kind of like I already am lol), but I can help you more with article edits, understanding policies, etc. I wouldn't mind helping you out until you're ready to stand on your own. So what do you think? Red Phoenix flame of life...protector of all... 22:21, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All right then. If ever you need any help, just let me know and the next time I'm on Wikipedia (or if I'm on right then), I'll give you a hand. There's also a userbox as part of the program for you if you want to use it, but again, it's optional. The template for it would be {{Adoptee|Red Phoenix}} if you're interested. Thought you might like that seeing as how you certainly seem to like userboxes (which isn't a bad thing, don't worry about that). Anyway, if you need any help, just let me know. Re:SSBB

[edit]

Yeah, I actually do play SSBB, very fun game. Problem is I don't own a Wii. I have friends who do and I usurp it off of them :P. But I do play a lot whenever I can. I use Marth (my SSBM main), Lucario (my SSBB main), and Sonic (who I suck as, but I play as for fun). Actually, I'm unique in that I played a lot of Melee and the Nintendo Gamecube but I prefer the Wiimote and Nunchuk over the Gamecube controller. My friends all think I'm weird for it, but it means we have to bring less Gamecube controllers together. Red Phoenix flame of life...protector of all... 02:42, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As much as i love the image and its a great peace of art and would love to sue it on my page i have a good feeling its derivative work therefore copyrighted by sega.

If I am wrong correct me?, It hurts you know telling you this and looking at the quality of that peace of work, it really does suck how you cannot add some image on wikipedia, because i don't think sega would sue if they didn't like it, they would just ask for it to be took down and so would most companies but wikipedia cannot take the risks i guess even as a non profit company but as you know rules are rules and i don't think that can be called free since the circle with a smaller circle inside it is getting called un-free.

By the way add me to your friends list, id like to be your friend, i founded "The Sega Project" by the way Gaogier Chat! 05:15, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Correct me if I'm wrong but, it seems to either be drawn, or computer generated, and I'm fairly confident that he can use it, but, I'm not entirely positive. Nice to meet the founder of the Sega Project! Skeletal S.L.J.C.O.A.A.A.T.R. 05:31, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For starters: Gaogier, you're unblocked!!! And secondly I've seen where the image originates from, and if it hasn't been taken down then this shouldn't be taken down either.Fairfieldfencer FFF 07:08, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And it doesn't break any copyrighting laws. (IE: Unknown takes a picture of Sonic made by SEGA, and changes his eyes to brown, and used it as a company logo, it'd be fine.) Skeletal S.L.J.C.O.A.A.A.T.R. 18:26, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Notes about the Sonic group

[edit]

I find it a little bit of bad faith, but I will wait and see how it goes. They decided to go off on their own, instead of discussing things in a civil manner with people that understand policies. Another part of the problem is SLJ and Fairfield (among others) don't understand notability, sourcing and plot guidelines on Wikipedia. I've stated this on several pages: Wikipedia isn't the guide to every detail. The group can try and make the articles however want, but I'm hoping you (and the rest) realize that there is policies that shouldn't be ignored. When the group is done working on the pages, I'm hoping they wont go around attacking people that don't agree with their work. Which is what has happened to the current articles: they don't see any major problems, and edit war with anyone that is trying to help. RobJ1981 (talk) 21:41, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm done talking about SLJ, and I suggest he does the same thing. There is no need for him to mention my name. Perhaps when the project is finished, I will see something good has happened. I have my doubts, because people don't seem to understand Wikipedia policies. RobJ1981 (talk) 21:59, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Posting for a user who is currently blocked

[edit]

The point of being blocked is that he doesn't get to edit. Now if you edit for him as you did [ http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:RobJ1981&diff=228687735&oldid=228683250 here] that rather defeats to point of the block. [edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:User Unknown the Hedgehog.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Replaceable fair use Image:Sega of Japan's Headquarters.png

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Sega of Japan's Headquarters.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? J Milburn (talk) 16:11, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not MySpace

[edit]

You don't seem to be editing the encyclopedia much at all and Wikipedia is not MySpace, so I have indefinitely blocked this account from editing. If I'm mistaken and you plan on making meaningful, helpful edits in the article space, please say so and we can talk about it however please bear in mind Wikipedia's servers are not meant for social networking but rather, for giving the world a free encyclopedia. Moreover, "training" and "lessons" are not needed for one to make helpful edits here. Gwen Gale (talk) 05:26, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for editing Wikipedia as if it were MySpace. Hi. I thought I'd better let you know, you're very close to being reblocked. Please stop posting about userboxes and user pages. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. (Still not fully understanding. Why? I'm really out of it today...) Okay...So, we're just making this a sandbox, or are we going to make this a full fledged article when we finish? Also, I think that it'd be wiser to list like the most popular (IE: PS1/PS2/PSP/PS3 would list the "Greatest Hits" games (IE: Sonic Heroes.).) Or, should we list just what the reviwers (IE: IGN.) gave say 8.0+ as a rating? But, no matter what, this would most likely, end up being divided into seperate articles for each system. Just letting you know, man! ;) Well, I'm off to work on SNN. See you there? Skeletal S.L.J.C.O.A.A.A.T.R. Soul 01:59, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I think I may have a solution. How about, as I suggested before? (IE: PS1-PS3 Greatest Hits) That would have games like, [Sonic Heroes]], Shadow the Hedgehog (video game), Kingdom Hearts, etc. Thing is, it'd most likely need to be divided. Each system would get a seperate article. Hmmm... Skeletal S.L.J.C.O.A.A.A.T.R. Soul 14:26, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sega article

[edit]

Wow, Unknown, I'm impressed! I've been watching the Sega article for a while now, and it's much better. But there's a few issues first. If you want, in a few days I can go through and retag all the issues so that way you'll have a great article when you're done with it. But here's a few things I caught:

1. You should use this tool to check your links to see if any have gone dead. It's a useful tool that I used to use when I reviewed GA articles. You've got a couple of bad ones, including that GameFaqs one, which, despite being said as being found, is marked as "suspicious" for good reason: it's dead and actually a 404 error.

2. Speaking of GameFaqs, don't use sources from there that people have written. They're not reliable. However, GameSpot is considered a reliable source. You can see WP:VG/S for a few suggestions on known reliable sources on video games (note that that's not a complete list by any means, it's just ones known by many to be reliable).

3. Try using citation templates for your sources, it's considered more proper that way. I can give you a tutorial on them if you need it after reading the linked page.

4. WP:SELFPUB, Wikipedia's guideline on self-published sources, is somewhat complex, but here it is in a nutshell: if you use self-published sources (such as Sega's website), it's perfectly fine to do so as long as you don't use it to show notability (i.e. don't say that they make great games citing them or something like that.) The reason for that is to go along with WP:NPOV since self-published sources can be tainted with point of view, but self-published sources are usually acceptable.

Anyway, keep up the good work! I'm very impressed with this. Red Phoenix flame of life...protector of all... 04:06, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, we live and learn, so don't worry about not knowing. I didn't know a lot when I was new to Wikipedia too, but that's part of why I adopted you as a user, to help you learn it. Give me a couple days to lay down some more tags, but the article does look much better. Keep up the good work. Red Phoenix flame of life...protector of all... 17:14, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

As an experienced GA reviewer, I don't think it's quite ready yet. Here's the main complaints I have:

  • Not enough citations. There needs to be citations almost everywhere so nothing can be seen as original research.
  • Get all of your references formatted properly using WP:CITET.
  • There's some indiscriminate information there that needs to be removed.

I'll look more into it later. Red Phoenix flame of life...protector of all... 21:36, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unleashed Release Date

[edit]

Are you "feeling stupid" cos the article already says the 18th? :) Whilst the TSSZ ref is not usable in the article it does indicate (as does even the first page of results in a Google search) that there's still ambiguity around the release date, and now certainly for Japan, so I've switched the release date and reference to the official Sega UK source for the time being, which indicates a "November" timeframe (without specifying an exact date). If we could find a reliable secondary source for either definitive release date, or for any delay in Japan, that would help greatly. SynergyBlades (talk) 21:27, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Eggman

[edit]

I'm fully aware of the fact that Sonic Drift 2 and Sonic R are spinoffs. That's why I didn't change the note of SA2 being his first playable appearance in a main-series game, just added that it was technically his third (or rather 4th, because I forgot the original Sonic Drift) playable appearance overall. 97.118.137.176 (talk) 00:14, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

London maybe, but here in Liverpool it's just a big fireworks display that we didn't even watch. Some idiots even set fireworks off an hour early. I'm not sure about America, but here in England you can buy fireworks in big shops like ASDA. I don't watch/care about the giant ball thing (That sounded pretty perverted... ^.^;) In matter of fact, I don't for anything. Come to think of it, I'm pretty emo-like these days... Skeletal SLJCOAAATR Soulsor 06:53, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear WikiProject Video games member,

You are receiving this message because you have either Category:WikiProject Video games members or {{User WPVG}} somewhere in your userspace and you have edited Wikipedia in recent months.

The Video games project has created a member list to provide a clearer picture of its active membership.

All members have currently been placed in the "Inactive" section by default. Please remove your username from the "Inactive" listing and place it under the "Active" listing if you plan on regularly:

Ideally, members are encouraged to do both, but either one meets our criteria of inclusion. Members still listed inactive at the beginning of November 2009 may be removed. You may re-add yourself to the active list at any time. Thank you for your help, and we look forward to working with you.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi. We're into the last five days of the Women in Red World Contest. There's a new bonus prize of $200 worth of books of your choice to win for creating the most new women biographies between 0:00 on the 26th and 23:59 on 30th November. If you've been contributing to the contest, thank you for your support, we've produced over 2000 articles. If you haven't contributed yet, we would appreciate you taking the time to add entries to our articles achievements list by the end of the month. Thank you, and if participating, good luck with the finale!

Slightly more appropriate, thanks

Using semicolons for all the separations isn't what I'd do, but perfectly acceptable. The problem I reverted (if we can even call it that) was your addition of just the one. Cheers to noticing small details! InedibleHulk (talk) 20:02, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
