Disambiguation link notification for June 30

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Ó Scealláin, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Kernel (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Reference Errors on 26 August

Hello, I'm ReferenceBot. I have automatically detected that an edit performed by you may have introduced errors in referencing. It is as follows:

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, ReferenceBot (talk) 00:30, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Nice to meet you. How did you post the cookie template to my page? I noticed that when you did this, whatever method you used did not leave a signature, so I had to check who left the cookie. If you leave it with the Wikilove button, which I expect is a heart at the top of your interface, then that should allow you to easily leave a cookie which includes your signature. Could you tell me how you left the cookie? Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:00, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Nice to meet you too. I just copied {{subst:cookie}} and posted it to your talk page. It left my name in the beginning of the text but not a signature. I actually didn't realize there was a WikiLove button lol. Upjav (talk) 17:38, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

WP:PERM Request

After reviewing your request for the account creator right, I have enabled the flag on your account. Keep in mind these things:

  • The account creator right removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24-hour period.
  • The account creator right is not a status symbol. If it remains unused, it is likely to be removed. Abuse of the account creator right will result in its removal by an administrator.

If you no longer require the right, let me know, or ask any other administrator. Drop a note if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of the account creator right. Happy editing! — xaosflux Talk 18:14, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

Please see Special:Diff/623474357, this has been enabled with a stipulation that it is only to be used for throttle bypass (what you were asking for), if you do not agree it will be removed. — xaosflux Talk 18:15, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

Thank you very much. I agree to only use this for throttle bypass. Upjav (talk) 18:19, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

Page review

Got it - thanks! Most of the Al Hayrah Google entries are because of Wikipedia - for instance 'Al Hayrah hotels' is autobot stuff. There are no hotels in Heera!!!

Will request merge. Cheers! Alexandermcnabb (talk) 06:51, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Okay, cool. Thanks for setting up the merge process - it's not really my forte, and I don't know anything about Heera, so I'd rather let someone else handle it. Best of luck on your articles, and like I said, let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to answer you or direct you to the right place. :D Upjav (talk) 06:57, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Dealing with problem users

The first thing to do with a user causing problems is to warn them. There are a whole series of warning templates like {{uw-vandalism2}} and {{uw-delete3}}. The full list is at WP:WARN, but the most commonly-used ones are explained at WP:Vandalism#Warnings. That whole page is worth reading. The warnings mostly come in four levels: 1 = assume good faith (if it might be an innocent mistake), 2 = no AGF, 3 = if you do that again you may be blocked, 4 = if you do that again you WILL be blocked with no further warning. Very often L2 or L3 is enough.

WP:AIV is the place to report vandalism, but as you will see from the notice marked "Important" at the top, the user needs to have been warned first. Admins at AIV will normally only make a block if vandalism has persisted after a L4 warning.

Of course, that kid writing about himself was not vandalism, and after two or three repeats {{uw-create2}} would be appropriate, and go on from there. If the user persists after warnings, then what started as an innocent misunderstanding of what WP is for becomes disruptive and suitable for a report to AIV.

There is a template {{uw-autobiography}} for people who write articles about themselves, but it is rather formal and this one gave his birth date which showed, if I remember right, that he was 13, so a simpler explanation is better. WP:Wikipedia is not about YOU is quite good, and WP:Guidance for younger editors is also good to point children to. You can see what I wrote at User talk:Sergeandrei#Wikipedia is not for writing about yourself, and he seems to have got the message. The warning at the end was intended to be equivalent to Level 3. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:44, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

@JohnCD:, thanks a lot for your help and response. I'll read through all the warnings shortly and bookmark templates. I also appreciate you removing that comment from my talk page. Best, Upjav (talk) 06:05, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Gino Pozzo

Hello Upjav. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Gino Pozzo, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: WP:G4 declined on a technicality: there is no Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gino Pozzo. No prejudice against nomination for any other reason. Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 11:42, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

@Shirt58: - that doesn't apply for recent speedy deletions? It was just speedily deleted and then reposted with the exact same content. I linked to the deletion log in the speedy deletion tag. Upjav (talk) 03:11, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi Upjav!
As I said wrote above, it was a technical CSD decline. WP:G4 only applies to articles that have been deleted by a formal deletion discussion, most often WP:AfD. While the article may have been speedily deleted before, it wasn't a candidate for that particular speedy deletion category.
If you think the article should be deleted, I think the better discussion would be at AfD.
I hope this explains things a bit more clearly. Please let me know if you have any questions whatsoever.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. account creation

Hello Upjav,

We are cleaning up some unused account creator flags. This flag is for people that need to create lots of accounts for other people on Wikipedia, normally part of the account creation team the education program, or for specific edit-a-thons

You show as inactive for this flag (0 actions in the last year), and it has been removed. If I have overlooked some other pressing need for this flag, please reply on my talk page. Please note, this will have no impact on your ability to edit anything, or create up to 5 new accounts per day for other people. priviledge

Hi Upjav, I need to revert your good faith amendment of the spelling of "priviledge" to "privilege" in this case, because it is in context in the title of a 17th century book and is following the original spelling, not just a modern typo. Hope you approve. Best wishes, Eebahgum (talk) 01:27, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Thanks a lot, Eebahgum - I saw that my change was in a reference but didn’t realize that was an old spelling so I treated it like a typo. I appreciate you leaving a message and apologize for the erroneous change. Definitely something to take into account when I’m going through Wikipedia looking for typos. Have a great day, and happy editing! Upjav (talk) 02:55, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

On 17 December 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tamakautoga, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in the late 19th century, Australian author Louis Becke's infant daughter went on a trip to Tamakautoga without him? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tamakautoga. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Tamakautoga), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Tolovana

hope this gets to you. The info I posted is straight out of my personal journal. It was entered in real time in 1953-1955. It has not been published elsewhere. It covers a period that is basically omitted on the Tolovana page. If that is not sufficient reference then I guess the page will have to do without my input. Old Put

  • Hi, @Old Put - thanks for getting back to me. I put your comment into a new section. I appreciate you taking the time to edit Wikipedia and make a contribution; however, unfortunately, Wikipedia requires that edits be verifiable and contain no original research so that readers and editors can check that the information comes from a reliable source. Obviously your intentions were good with your edit, but that isn't always the case. You can read more about these policies at Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:No original research. Thank you for your time, and thank you for your service. Best, Upjav (talk) 05:56, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
Upjav, I happened to come across this and while I understand why the content was deleted, I am not sure that it doesn't belong on that page. First, USS Tolovana (AO-64) only has one source and it's a primary source. A diary would be considered a primary source and the edits don't need to be easily verifiable. For instance, if Old Put makes the diary available to anyone who asks, then it is verifiable. As I see it, the problem is that the person who wrote the diary is the one adding it to the page. I wonder if Old Put would scan those pages and add them to Commons if then the information could be added back in by another editor.
Those diaries probably belong in an archive somewhere. And if they were in an archive, we could cite them as a primary source here. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 04:51, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
    • @PopularOutcast, I understand where you're coming from and agree that primary sources are important and Old Put's journal entries are worth preserving as a part of history. Your point is also taken about having another person use the content from the primary source upload. On that point, though, I would think someone else should be the one uploading the journal in line with a piece of the policy of notable people not writing their own biographies --- theoretically, if someone is notable enough, someone else should have written/be inclined to write their biography without the subject being the one to do so. Should the same go for a written source, where if it is notable enough, someone else should be inclined to upload it? A counterpoint there would be how pictures and other visual media are uploaded, where I can take a picture and also be the one to upload it. Obviously there is more nuance to that, and I have to think more about it, but generally I see your point --- it's just that on the whole, I think it would be much easier for hoaxes to appear on Wikipedia if anyone could freely write up their own sources (potentially with a sock so that they're using "someone else's content" as you suggested should be prohibited) and use them to back claims. At least with unreferenced claims you can pull them, and with fake book references you can search for those titles to verify, creating a credible-looking website is labor-intensive, etc. Beyond that, if we saw a bunch of people abusing this, we could see Wikimedia get clogged with fake primary sources that would take eons to sift out from real sources. Let me know what you think, and I appreciate your comment on this talk page thread. I apologize for the delay - I've been swamped at work. Upjav (talk) 04:32, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

DYK award checkbox

Hey there Upjav! I noticed that you checked off the box for the 25 DYK CE Award on my entry at Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of DYKs. I'm no more an expert than you are, but my understanding is that that box should be checked once the award has been given by another editor, which in my case it hasn't. Just wanted to check what happened – maybe you meant to drop the award template on my talk page also, but something went wrong? ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 04:40, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

  • Hey, Ezlev! I took the check mark to mean that a user crossed the milestone rather than received the actual award on their talk page. However, I definitely should have given you the award so that you can have a date and milestone and display it - apologies for the oversight on my end, and I'll drop you an award momentarily. Keep up the good work, and thanks for flagging this. Have a great weekend! Upjav (talk) 06:13, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
