Songs from Montreal[edit]

Being able to document a song's existence via offsite references is not what defines whether the song qualifies for inclusion in a Wikipedia list or not. The base condition is that the artist already has an article on here.

The problem with allowing any song to be listed there, just on the basis of being able to verify that it exists, is that some of the artists in question fail to pass our notability rules for musicians, and will never actually qualify for articles on here — unsigned garage bands have a remarkable tendency to try to add their names to Wikipedia lists as a promotional tactic, which they're not entitled to do. Yes, some are oversights who should have articles but just don't yet — the ticket, if you think an artist falls in that camp, is to write the article so that they can be added. But if an artist doesn't meet our inclusion rules, then they're not entitled to be mentioned in our lists of songs or musicians either, and some of the artists that I removed from the list do fall into that camp.

So if you want a song to be listed there, then write an article about the artist so that it can be — because until the article about the artist exists to be linked to, the list is not allowed to contain any redlinked artists. Bearcat (talk) 06:14, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Urbanut Reply : Many of the deleted songs are from well-established artists who have long and comprehensive articles in French. A few of them are «unsigned garage bands» and I agree that those should be deleted. I'll fix it. And go to other city-related songs lists, you will have a massive clean up to do. Good night!

Then by all means, feel free to help us out by translating those long and comprehensive articles about artists who have them on fr: but aren't covered on en: yet. The problem is that it's impossible to keep non-notable garage bands off the list if it's littered with redlinks, because you can't tell from a redlink which class the artist falls into, so there would be no way to sort out which redlinks to keep and which ones to delete. So the only way we can keep an open-ended list (one which could potentially turn into an infinite pile of spam) clean is to put a strict "only people who already have Wikipedia articles to link to" rule on them — which means that if you want a song by an artist who doesn't have an article yet to be added, then you need to start the article so that it can be. And I'm not personally responsible for any list on Wikipedia except the ones that I personally see and clean up, either — so if there are other lists that need to be similarly cleaned up, then by all means be my guest. Thanks for the explanations, I am not an expert in wiki editing. I am good at translating from EN to FR, but not on the other way. And thanks for «disambiguating» the artists names.
