You're welcome. I've never even heard of that feature. Whenever someone makes an unblock-auto request, we do a few checks on their past history and then unblock the offending IP address and reblock it as anonymous only. --  Netsnipe  ►  19:44, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

MP:Talk

I agree it was a bit brash of me. I removed that part because the apology had been made and accepted, but the section had deteriated into two people insulting each other. My reference to BEANS was a bit obtuse, I was trying to put a halt to the two(?) editors reverting each others' insults and etc. The whole section had very little to do with the main page and wasn't worth archiving. Welcoming new users

Hey there! Just dropping in to tell you that it is rather pointless to go through Special:Log/newusers and welcome literally everyone there. Most (and I really mean most) of accounts never edit, so it's way better to watch Special:Newpages instead and find some real new contributors there (make sure you don't welcome vandals!). Don't take it personally - just letting you know that what you're doing now is considered a very bad practice by many people (who consider it a cheap way to raise one's edit count) and is frowned upon. Okay, I understand. But take this: look at Special:Statistics - we have over 3 million users. Now, the welcome template you're using is 6410 characters long. This gives roughly 19 Gigabytes of text if we were to welcome everyone! 'Nuff said about numbers; it has also been common in the past for such eager "welcomers" to welcome vandals as well, which makes Wikipedia look stupid *g*. Finally, as of edit count, I don't judge people roughly by the numbers (only by decomposition by namespace), but some do and might view this spamming as a cheap way to increase the count. :-) Миша13 17:50, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

I believe WP:DUU90 failed for an entirely different reason. Its implementation involved a mass "deletion" of accounts and people are still against massive unsupervised administrative actions. Plus, the "vanishing" of accounts would be bad for Wikipedia's image (i.e. a user comes back after a later date only to find that their login no longer works, or worse, the username has been usurped by someone else!). Hi, I'm a new user that just got a welcome message from you (Vanderdecken) and thought I'd put in my two cents. I appreciated the message. I uploaded a photo yesterday that I thought might be a nice addition to the page on Kata Tjuta in Australia. I don't use Wikipedia much, but a friend saw the picture and suggested I submit it. I'm pretty clueless about how to navigate this site and clearly made some mistakes of protocol while trying to figure out how to make my submission. So today I found what felt like a barrage of criticism for my missteps along with the "accusation" that I had just registered as a user before uploading. Maybe that's just the wiki culture and I'm not familiar with it, but your messages of support (one personal, one that might have been an autoreply(?)) were the ones that made me reconsider my initial reaction which was to walk away. Re: Portal (computer game) removal of image

I don't think the image makes too much sense for two reasons: First, it's way too small to actually find out what it's supposed to be. My first reaction was "What's this?" as I saw it. You can identify a flag at this size, but not that picture. Second, I think this is a fine example of Wikipedia:Don't overuse flags (or world maps, in this case). There's just no real reason to have the map there, it's more confusing than it is useful. It's also misleading to state that something's available all over the world because you can download it, see Internet censorship in mainland China for example. --Conti|✉ 16:32, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

The whole point of the flags/icons is that everyone can quickly see where something is from. When you have to click on the image to find out what it is the whole point becomes moot. I know that the image is used likewise on other articles, but that doesn't justify its use. I'm trying to reduce the overuse of flags where I can see it, and this, in my opinion, is a prime example. We don't have to add images besides the publisher's name, so let's just do it where it is helpful for the reader. --Conti|✉ 19:43, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

3rr warning for Themodernizer

Hi, you left this warning on Themodernizer's talk page, warning him against edit-warring. Please understand that the person continually attempting to push this screenshot into the article has been repeatedly vandalising various Windows-related articles, as well as my own user page, because we're stopping them from pushing a large pile of screenshots with copyrighted Kids Next Door images in them, which is a clear violation of our fair-use policy. Have a look at the user's image uploads, for example -- notice how they're overwriting a number of fair-use Windows images to incorporate cartoon images. In some cases, the problem is that they are using a Windows Vista "lookalike" style to demonstrate Windows XP features, which is a serious concern since it misrepresents the visual aspects of Windows XP. Anyways, to make a long story short -- Themodernizer is upholding Wikipedia fair use policy, and fighting vandalism, by reverting this user's changes, and as such is not subject to 3RR. Regarding this, no, it should NOT. Please familiarise yourself with Wikipedia's fair use policy. Unless the content is discussing Kids Next Door specifically in the article on Windows XP, or any of the other dozen-plus articles they've tried to insert inappropriate copyrighted content into, then absolutely no Kids Next Door content should appear in those articles. This is NOT up for debate -- this is long-established policy. Also, if by "in the past" you mean "just a few hours ago", then yes... please note that this user only logs in to do image-related work; otherwise they're usually editing while not logged in. Regarding this, actually, no, I'm not murdering piles of Muslims in the name of religion. I am, however, absolutely hellbent on building an encyclopedia that contains accurate, well-sourced information, is neutrally presented, and adheres to our fair use requirements. As a regular contributor here, I'm sure you can relate to that sentiment.

"Proving" whether the anon IP (who vandalises Microsoft Windows articles with Kids Next Door bullshit) and Jigs41793 (who vandalises Microsoft Windows articles with Kids Next Door bullshit) are the same person is not all that important, but they did start at almost exactly the same time, and serve pretty much exactly the same goal of damaging the overall quality of the encyclopedia. New users whose sole purpose appears to be pushing their favourite children's cartoon into all the screenshots of a computing product are not working towards the goal of a better encyclopedia, and as such, all of their offending contributions need to be removed. Fighting this vandalism wastes my productive time, and apparently it earns me the reward of having my user page vandalised, but whatever, someone's gotta do it. -/- Warren 11:46, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Re: my edits

I feel the rewording of the Daemon tools article was a good idea. Prior to my edit, it stated that emulation tools could be used to copy copyrighted material. You can copy copyrighted material without an emulation tool. It would be more correct to say that emulation tools could be used to copy copy-protected material or circumvent copy-protection. About the edit count, I can assure you that I am not hunting for a high edit count. If you look at my contributions, you can see that I often add a description, though it happens that I don't, I guess I could improve on that and try use the description field more. I will admit that I was offended by American arrogance and over reacted, but is putting officially recorded information on Wikipedia really that anti American? I thought Wikipedia was for information not American propaganda. Thanks for explaining that aspect of wikipedia, the Arrogant insulting [user:Kesh] has written The article so that the casual observer will be mislead into believing these are official or credible claims with of course they are not, the claim lacks vital caveats I would be happy if it was clearly visible when reading the article that these are unofficial claims. I thought Wikipedia was about credible information not American propaganda. The Empire State Express is at present just a tool for Americans to rub their ego's the minimum that should happen is there be a disputed.

I am fed up with this place.

I tried to create an interesting article (FYI, I am in no way associated with CHUNK 6.6.6., being a plus 50-ish multiple century (that is, 100-mile-ride) bike rider with a variety of interests, among which I do NOT include practical applications of anarchy) and the insinuation that it was some sort of vanity piece says a lot more about the person who said it than it does about me. The so-called 'removal of delete tags' or whatever you refer to, was not malicious, but in fact was a natural reaction by a fairly competent software dude (me) to what I thought was unexpected and unexplained behavior by the wiki engine - as soon as I realized that it was a PERSON putting in the delete tag I stopped removing it.

The smallest search of Wayback would immediately have revealed that the 'pretentious' phraseology this Hayworth character finds so non- whatever, was actually part of the manifesto of the group, a literal quote from their organizing documents (or whatever passes for the equivalent in an anarchist bicycle strike force.) Ditto the references to 'post-apocalyptic', and it is a serious violation of any editorial code worthy of the name to avoid substituting the editor's version of what is normative for that of his subject in a story. (Not to fly my flag, but I have published tens of dozens of articles in big trade papers, general circ mags, op-eds in the Christian Science Monitor, Detroit News and the Boston Globe, etc etc. I may not be Shakespeare but I also ain't chopped liver.)

Similarly I posted what I thought was a reasonable, inoffensive and informative piece on the etymology of the word 'Hoodsie', as is used in Boston slang.

Whack! 'WIKIPEDIA IS NOT A DICTIONARY' was the kindly comment which accompanied that particular commissar's judgment. Oh, really? I can point to dozens of similar definitional entries. But apparently there are those who have, in fact, woken up as Pope, and who enjoy swanning about waving 'delete flags', like some invisible squad of Red Queens in the increasingly unbreathable air of this through-the-looking-glass wonderland. 'Off with her head!'

These supercilious attitudes that seem to characterize many of those who appear to occupy the chairs of authority around here have chased me away. Puts me in mind of a 60's bitch slapdown between aging gays (again, I am not one of them either.) The only actual positive feedback I have seen here was relating to the first thing I posted, but I am afraid to even mention that, since it now seems highly likely that by calling attention to it I will doom it to a summary execution.

Remind me again of 'wiki standards'; is that some sort of digital version of the Academe Francais?

I thought not.

Good luck with reviving the post, but another French phrase (translated here) seems likely to be the reward - 'The more you kiss their ass, the more they shit on your head.'

WP:UW future?

Sorry for the blatant spam, but you have yourself down as interested at WikiProject user warnings WP:UW. There is a discussion on going here that might be of interest to you about the future of this project. There are two strawpolls on the talk pages and the second one is about the future of the WP:UW project. Now we have the end in sight we are looking at wrapping up the project and merging it with Template messages/User talk namespace WP:UTM and creating a one stop shop for all userspace templates. I just wanted to say thanks for the welcome message on my talk page. Where I work we have actually set up a wiki for our internal documentation, so I've read through quite a bit of the wikipedia help resources and policies, but I still wanted to say thanks for taking the time (or programming the bot ;-) ) to leave a message on my talk page. I've always observed wikipedia to be a really friendly place, and kinda half expected to get some kind of message once I made an edit.

I do actually have a question that I've never been able to find an answer to. Do you know any way to make the link when you click on an image take you to an article instead of the images description page?

Also when writing on my user page should I use first or third person? I'm asking because I've read the page doesn't actually belong to me.

RE:Your voting template

In fact, I don't have a template, I just type out the full image name. I think I was using 20px instead of 15px because in the latter size, the image looks slightly distorted.   • Yes I guess you were right. After the four tildes, I always type my user name. But I never really realized it/didn't really care that I was doing it incorrectly. Hi Vanderdecken. It seems that you have checked the "Mark all edits as minor by default" box in your preferences page. Minor edits, as explained at Help:Minor edit, are edits that the editor feels do not need to be reviewed by other editors. Thanks for the comments on my Wikipage about Korean Pottery. Last October this page was nominated for deletion and after much discussion was reccommended to keep with clean up...........................I have been working on the clean up since then. Please read the comments of the deletion discussion that can be found on the Discuss This Page Link. I really believe that deletion of this page and its photographs would be a loss to Wikipedia and to students who search the internet for research source material. Deletion from Wikipedia will lessen the archive value of this encyclopedia. MVCOL

You seem to have put a test1 notice on my user talk page regarding some edits made on March 24, 2007. I wonder what edits you might be referring to, as I fail to see anything at that date on my contributions page. Also, I don't remember doing anything that'd warrant a test1 notice. Thank you for taking your time and answering my concerns. I'd be grateful if you could elaborate just a little bit further, as, although you answered my original question, you caused some new ones to appear: I fail to see, why revert? The table is obviously empty and I can't see what purpose is it supposed to serve... I just assumed someone put it there as a test (or maybe to be expanded later) and left it there. Or maybe I'm missing something? Which specific policy are you referring to? TIA for bearing with me.

(Oh, and BTW, I'm not that new of a user... I've been here since... let's see... sometime around 2001. I only created an account some time later, though, and have never really gotten to contributing much. But forgive my digression, I take it that a) it is inconfirmable (well, User:taw could confirm, perhaps, but) b) it doesn't really matter, and c) as far as number of contributions is concerned, I could very well be classified as a newbie.)
