I actually think that all school articles should be indefinitely semiprotected (to (a) reduce vandalism/cyberbullying/etc.; and (b) encourage more school users to register and thus become productive members of the community), but I highly doubt that this will ever become reality.
Specifically in regards to Xavier, under the current regime regarding protection, no I don't think so. While there has been vandalism, it's been sporadic over quite a long time period. I don't think this justifies semi-protection per the points at WP:SILVERLOCK. If you'd like to use your discretion and semi-protect it anyway, I wouldn't object (because it aligns with what I said, above, in my first paragraph). ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 18:09, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Daniel,

My name is Joel, I go to the Emanuel School.

Although I am new to Wikipedia, I felt it necessary to not release the coordinates of my school, due to the risk of an anti-Semitic attack (I know this may seem quite distanced, but nevertheless a concern of mine.)

G'day Josh, I know a bunch of your teachers and classmates... :) I used to teach at a school nearby and some of my students went to your's after graduation.
(a) I think you worry too much, and (b) I think that your worry is misplaced. In regards to (a), there is no credible threat to Emanuel. I am aware of how much your school spends on security, and I'm sure that they have everything under control moment to moment. I actually think that the school with which I worked had more problems with campus invasions, grafiti (anti-Semitic and otherwise) and attacks generally. Personally, I'd look to the activity on the Emanuel article here. There hasn't been a single instance of anti-Semitic vandalism on that article since the article was created.
In regards to (b), even if there was a credible threat, people so inclined would be more inclined to check the yellow pages or the front of a street directory than wikipedia.
All of that being said, if you want to help out here on wikipedia (in regards to improving Emanuel's article, for example), then I suggest that you register and watchlist the article. ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 12:54, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Requesting third party input for on-going issues with a school article

I am requesting third party input for help at coming to a unbiased determination on edits and content that should be allow/omitted from the Northwestern High School (Hyattsville, Maryland) article. I previously requested formal mediation out of error. The request for formal mediation was rejected and it was suggested I access the WikiSchools page to see if an administrator could help with the disputes. I have seen you make several posts and read your talk page, and you seem quite knowledgeable. Below, I have listed the on-going issues. I apologize for the large content, but I need this to be clear the first time, so there's no confusion and needless back-and-forth:

  • Way too many conflicting parties/editors giving their own input on what changes need to be made to the article, and when changes are made to appease one editor, another will come through and state they are completely unhappy with the revisions made. Prime example, I was just reading through WP:WPSCH/AG which is the official Wikipedia guidelines on how to write/edit a school article. I came across a section that specifically states a section highlighting the schools' EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, should be added — I once added a very nice Extracurricular Activities section — it was subsequently removed by a rogue editor who claimed it had no relevance in the article and, again, violated some sort of Wikipedia policy.
  • Blatant hypocrisy... I have been chastised numerous times for content either added or omitted from this article, but when I go look at the article of another school that is a "Featured Article" (a school that was specifically pointed out by Wikipedia to use as example to base an article off of) I'll see the EXACT same content that was either removed from the article I was editing OR I was told the information was violating some sort of Wikipedia policy and thus it's affecting the quality of the article. One example is a Course Offerings section. The original section was over-detailed and did (in a way) violate Wikipedia's guidelines. It was later shortened and cleaned-up to comply to Wiki policies, by an administrator. Many months later (just the other day), a random Wikipedia editor came to the article and completely erased that section, citing it had no place in the article. The content MIRRORED the Academics section found on FA of Stuyvesant High School. Why is okay for Stuyvesant (a Featured Article) to outline their course offerings but it's not okay for Northwestern??
  • There have been many different editors which have been through the Northwestern article. Again, many have seen the content of the page and determined it was quality work for the most part and went as far to access the Discussion page to highlight what needs to be done to improve the quality of the article so it can move up on the quality scale. Out of the blue, another random editor will come out of nowhere and start slapping red flags everywhere and eventually it's now gotten to the point where an article that was recently rated a C-Class article (close to being a B-Class), is now somehow a Start-Class article!
  • I have specifically been accused of basically being a "hard head" and refusing to comply with the guidelines set by a specific editor, and subsequently threatened by said editor(s) citing they would find a way to make it so I was banned from further editing the Northwestern article. The most insane part is (based on what they cited to come to that point) I wasn't responsible for the edit/revision that infuriated this editor.

I've had a quick look at the article, and it actually looks pretty good... Certainly more comprehensive than other articles that I've seen. Be careful about WP:OWNership of articles, because this can become a problem... Seems like you're a little bit too emotionally connected.
In any case, to respond to the points that you've made:
  • Can you find the diff of the extracurricular activities section that you had made previously? I don't seem to be able to find it in my (admittedly cursory) look over the history. I, and I believe other WP:WPSCH editors, should be OK with such a section.
  • There are some problems with the course offerings section... I don't think that it needs to be in a table on it's own. Prose (i.e., paragraphs and sections if necessary) would be better. Stuyvesant High School has this section in prose. This is what User:Lucas20 and other editors meant.
  • I have no idea why User:LonelyBeacon decided to assess the article as Start... Seems like s/he's missing the point of what the assessment is for. I've reassessed to C, per the guidelines at WP:WPSCH/A. Note, however, that because I'm not a member of WP:WPMD, I'm not willing to assess from their perspective, and I would suggest that, being that you are closely involved with the article, you find a 4th party from that project to assess against their requirements.
  • I can't see any indication on your talk page that you're topic-banned from editting the article. I can see that people were close to asking for a topic ban...
Which brings me to my final point. Be really careful about becoming too closely tied to any article here on Wikipedia. Keep your WP:COOL, be WP:CIVIL and avoid WP:OWNership.
I think you should go over and rewrite that course offerings section... That really does need to be done sooner rather than later. I think then that people will accept that you're editing in good faith. I'll keep the article on my watchlist, but, being that I usually limit myself to Australian Schools, please don't expect too much in terms of editorial contribution from me. Thank you very kindly. You've been most helpful. To touch on a few points... I would like to start out by asking if you can provide me any means of finding other editors or admins who deal mostly with U.S. schools? I found you using WikiProject Schools but it wasn't liked towards a specific region/country.
With that said, I'm glad you've done what you could. As far me being 'emotionally tied' to the article... not really. I have contributed more to this article than anyone else, but, I have absolutely NO issues with any edits esp. because I have no ownership over the article. My biggest issue seemed to be a double standard. I had pointed out the Stuyvesant article on numerous occasions and no one responded to the inquiry. As editors/admins or whomever else on this vast world of Wikipedia, I would expect that if someone is going to revert someone else's edits, they are obligated to give a detailed explanation as to why — and also they need to give a detailed explanation on what other steps they need to take. The impression I got from the two editors I was going back and forth with, was that particular section had absolutely zero relevancy, at all. On the converse, you took time to explain to me what needed to be done and I understood completely. I can easily find an old version of the Northwestern article and create a new 'course offerings' section to mirror the format of Stuyvesant's.
Also, I spent the last several hours reading WP:WPSCH/AG and making revisions on the article to try and comply with Wikipedia school article writing standards to increase the chances of the article eventually being rated a B-Class. If you wish, you can recheck the article.
One last note... I re-added the 'Extracurricular Activities' section using the official list from Northwestern High School. It's no big deal. I'm sure it would have been tremendously hard for you to have found the old version as I believe it was deleted in one mass edit, rather than a single edit.

Hmmm. I don't think that situation was "peacefully resolved". It was left unresolved with one user declaring that the content being put forward was unacceptable because... Because... Because s/he just didn't like it. Never got a better reason out of that discussion.
That was despite fulfilling the requirements of WP:RY through significant international coverage in reliable sources. I walked away because there was never going to be any traction on the issue with a user who WP:OWNs the article in question so hard and it was outside my own area of editing interest.

Temasek Secondary School Debate

In reference to the post you posted onto my talk page, this is my reply: Hi Danjel, i apologies if i have breached any guidelines in anyway. However, please understand that i do understand that wiki pages are not promotional. Please however notethat theissue of schools using their wiki pages to promote themselves is espeacually rampant in wikis of singaore schools. Also, Singapore laws and legislation govern such issues regarding schools. It is the civil responsibility of the student to inform the school managment if such things occur. I had already guessed that AngelSL would not be an upper sec student judging of the poor understanding of the school. If action must be taken, as a senior, action must be taken. I would like to ask you not interfere with this internal issue. I am not trying to be rude in anyway but i absolutly cannot stand people deleting or editing wiki pages they have no knowledge of. Yes, I saw your post. I have not seen evidence of User:AngelSL misrepresenting the school in any way, but I am seeing evidence of his/her better understanding of wikipedia policies and a will to actually improve the article.
You clearly don't understand what's going on here. This is not an internal issue for the school. This is a wikipedia issue. The article must conform with wikipedia policies and should comply with consensus generated guidelines. I personally think it is hookier in the shorter format (that's why I tried to cut back on what I saw as blubber). Regarding the "misrepresentation", I disagree; what a reader may imply from a quick glance at the hook is not always the same as the literal meaning of the hook. However, if you want to rework the original to keep the name of the school near the front of the hook, that's no problem; I'd prefer the target article to be near the front to keep it focused. Can or can't

Hey Danjel! Don't know whether to merge this new section, w/ above...

I've gotten a request from someone I know, and they've asked me if it's possible to make this article. Part of the message this person sent me,:

"The artist is 'Matthew Najar' based in Australia (unsure of which part, I need to double check on his research). He's a mid-range kind of act, has a large fanbase (20,200 active users on his Facebook page and over 26,000 fans - amazing hit ratio) and has started to work with acts unofficially such as John Mayer etc. Thats what I can tell and know from what I have available to me; I thought I could somehow arrange to get a Wikipedia page setup to account for this success as part of my work for his label."

I think that WP:SIGCOV is going to the major issue here. There needs to be some reliable sources before you can start thinking about notability even. Google doesn't give us much here... Formspring

Danjel! Haven't spoken in a while, hope you are doing alright :D

Anyway. The fun part.

Okay, as you possibly may know, I've been working a lot on the Aziz Shavershian article. Looking at it right now, I feel like it's still missing information - so in other words I feel it's incomplete, and is yet to reach its full potential.

Formspring - hope your familliar with - is where people ask the person with the FS account, questions. All types of questions. Then the person who has the account, answers them or can ignore them, etc. whatever suites them. By my understanding, Formspring is a social networking site, and whilst Aziz was alive, he managed his own account with Formspring, answering his fans and followers their questions etc.

What I'm asking is - is it possible to perhaps use some of the Q&A's in the article? not for controversial information, obviously, but for questions relating to what his UAI ranking was, what religion he is, where his family came from, what years he immigrated, his educational history - look, everything we need to know about him, he has written about.

It kind of kills me inside to be requesting this, you know? If using FS as a source is inadmissible, a shame it would be - would you happen to know any other way I can get information for this article? Aziz has died. And as someone who has tried to developing the article, I don't want the article to die too. The media, has used his facebook, formspring and other sites about him as primary sources for their articles, so does that legitimize the social networks in this a case...even a little? Hmm. Yeah I know Formspring. My thoughts are that it would be inherently and essentially an self published source about self. So long as you can meet the requirements there, then it shouldn't be a problem. That is:
  1. the material is not unduly self-serving;
  2. it does not involve claims about third parties;
  3. it does not involve claims about events not directly related to the source;
  4. there is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity;
  5. the article is not based primarily on such sources.

Hate to be annoying or anything, but a) would you be able to give me an example from his Formspring? (please excuse the profanity he uses in some cases; the first three pages should have a few instences where he mentions facts tied in with the article such as his UAI, Birthdate; etc) also "Zyzz" is his own persona in which he takes it upon himself to be known as a "troll", so there may be some weird questions, matched up with weird answers. B) How would I use formspring as a reference - as in how would I reference it in the article? Use it as an external link only, or just simply </ref> it like the rest?
And one more thing, I'm fammiliar with WP:BLP; WP:NPOV etc. and also know not to add trivial or controversial information in, esp. with a source like this one. Ahh... I tried, I really did. But... As I think I've said before, this is a general area in which I have exactly zero interest. So I can't read into it in much detail without getting distracted by shiny objects.
I think the response where he responded to something in Fairfax (I presume either The Age or SMH) could be useful to you in some way. It's an example of a FS post that has enough detail to actually develop it out.

In a somewhat related issue, for Aziz's brother's page, I would suggest that it falls into not news and people notable for one event categories. A petty criminal who has appeared in different newspaper for one minor crime isn't necessarily notable enough to warrant a page on Wikipedia. Thoughts? Why am I suddenly the expert on beefcakes? Did I put an "ask me about muscle-bound narcissists" userbox on my userpage in some report writing haze at some point? Why can't someone ask me about schools ffs.
Sorry if I'm sounding a bit short, I've taken the day off from my hormone soaked students - end of school dance coming up, and So-and-so wants What's-his-face to ask her out, but he's already asked Jane Doe who rejected him for favour of John who asked her later that day and everyone thinks Miss [Name Withheld] is too pretty to ask and... AHH WHY ARE MY STUDENTS INVOLVING ME IN THIS SOAP OPERA???
So, I've taken an involuntary vow of silence for some reason, but the builders on the block next to me decided to wake me up with some sort of pagan "welcome the Sun" ceremony which has now stopped because (a) the sacrificial virgin/apprentice chickened out; (b) their high priest had done sort of euphoria-induced aneurism; or (c) now that 0745 has passed and the entire street is awake whether they like it or not anyway, there is no longer any need for: (1) shouting obscenities at each other; (2) banging of metal things in some sort of demented industrial staccato; (3) operation of heavy machinery because it's there (File:NewNote.pngif you have a diesel generator and you know it, turn it onFile:NewNote.png); (4) power tools that can only be operated in the light of dawn; (5) revving of truck engines because if you've got a truck, you might as well never park it, as such, just repeatedly gun the engine to stay on the gentle slope of my street for 45 minutes (who says you need brakes). Seriously, I think construction has stopped for the day... WTF??? And, yet, I can't get back to sleep.
As for the article, I don't know (or, as I may have inadvertently communicated above, care). Seems like the article asserts notability for more than just whatever the crime was. Coverage seems OK. 3rr warning to me

Actually, I'm nowhere near passing 3RR on Newman College, Perth. Perhaps you're unaware, but, per WP:3RR, "A series of consecutive saved revert edits by one user with no intervening edits by another user counts as one revert." Thus, I've only reverted twice on that article. I won't revert again if you revert my changes or re-add the colors (i.e, I'm not going to claim some sort of "right" to 3 reverts). Note, though, that on the list of alumni, for any of those people that are alive, WP:NLIST is a part of WP:BLP, and thus is technically exempt from 3RR. I'm not particularly bothered about removing uncited alumni. I think it's overzealous, but it's reasonably subject to challenge and I've done the same on other articles (including earlier today).
However, 2 reverts removing the substantive section on houses are still two reverts and close to that bright line of three. Two is somewhere near to three. Great that you're not going to revert again. Neither am I until a consensus forms.

Hmmm. That could probably be worded better. But there's still the issue of notability per WP:LISTPEOPLE. I think principals satisfies notability, but student captains probably not.

About Article 50th Redlands International cadet Australian Championship

Dear Danjel,

After writing my first wikipedia article it has already been put up for deleation. I think it would be fine to userfy the article but I am just a bit worried that, as their is so much harsh feedback, it will never go back on the main sight. As I am new to wikipedia I do not know that this would be the case. If you could give me some gaurenty that my article would could go back on the mainsite I would be happy for you to userfy it for me, seeing I don't know how.

School AfDs

Hi Danjel. You and I may differ very slightly on notability of schools, but I certainly concur that this spate of mass deletions (nearly 200 in the last 2 weeks) is a ridiculous waste of experienced editors' time having to vote and close them. I don't know what can be done about it. Depending on who turns up to vote, some near identical AfDs get closed with totally opposite consensus. Some of the discussion at WT:WPSCH may help, but there are some contributors there who may possibly appear to be simply expressing personal deletionist/inclusionsist opinions without fully understanding how deletion works and how policies, guidelines, and convention by precedent are, or can be, interpreted and applied. Yeah, I know that we differ. I think I'm a bit further along the inclusionist continuum. :) I'm probably more militant generally than you too. Heh.
I think the only way to make sure that the actual consensus view that nonnotable articles are redirected/merged into their respective localities/superschoolgroups is to vote on each one (which is a tremendous waste of time for all of us when people should just be doing the right thing and googling for the school). Even there, I'm concerned that the redirect/merge won't be fulfilled properly. We need to keep an eye on this.
But there really does seem to be some problems with how this process is being prosecuted. I'm really concerned that the parts of the deletion process that could potentially improve articles (and thereby the whole encyclopedia) aren't being followed. I've caught out quite a few where people aren't doing anything over than hitting the XFD button, which I think actually throws the whole list into suspicion. Thanks. Here is an unimportant one...but I am a big Packer fan and thought I would put it on my Userpage. When I typed in the template for being a Packer fan, as it showed in the instructions, it just said template etc. You have no idea how frustrated I get with not being able to do the little things. I had been copying "pipes" because I didn't know where it was on my keyboard. Until...I read today that my keyboard only shows the broken line. I have had no experience whatsoever in any "language", so I feel like an idiot most of the time trying to do incredibly simple things. Only discovered recently there was a button for links and references...I was trying to do it the hard way. Should have read every beginner thing I could find first, instead of jumping in. You mean {{User:UBX/NFL-Packers}}? Just type it in exactly as it appears. The curly brackets are usually just the Shift-key version of the square brackets.
All of this just takes practice. You'll get used to it eventually. Until then, play around and ask if you need help. Craigmore Christian School discipline

The information regarding Craigmore Christian School administering corporal punishment is incorrect. CCS has not done so for some time. The current behaviour management policy does not include such punishments. All references to corporal discipline as a part of CCS should be deleted.
