A question about welcoming new users[edit]

Can I ask why you are welcoming new users that haven't even made edits yet? Are you using a bot? Just curious. -- MicahMN | μ 20:49, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what the Wikipedia policy is on welcoming new users, but this is how I interpret the practice: A new user creates a Wikipedia account. This is most likely because either because they heard about Wikipedia and want to join the editing community or tried to create a new article and, under the new policy, were not allowed to. Either way, the Wikipedian is going to make an edit. If the user has already made an edit, then they will be able to read the manual of style, naming conventions (if they joined to create a new article), etc. If they have not yet edited an article, it might be because they either do not know how to or because they click on "edit this page" and then, confused by the wikimarkup, decided not to edit. In that instance, the user can then read the editing tutorial listed on the greeting and learn how to edit a page and what the markup means. Oh, I don't have a problem with welcoming new users before they make edits, but I think there are problems if a bot is being used to do it (without permission). I just saw a bunch of new User talk pages spring up on the RC list very quickly, and I didn't think it was possible for a person to do that by hand. I'm sure it is entirely possible to do it with a tabbed browser and doing it in a batch. I'm not an expert on trademarks and that dispute, but I'm pretty sure that going through and deleting the article is not the way to remedy the situation (because people will frankly revert it). If this is a copyright issue (like the text of the article is a copyright violation), then there are ways to remedy that situation. From what it sounds like, WCF and FIDE are two different organizations. If this is the case, then it can easily be fixed. You can edit the World Chess Federation page here. This site is a goverment site, which is maintained by the department of Ayurveda, Sri Lanka. Therefore it is not a Commrcial content provider, also i have taken information from other sources and have referred to them in the article.

Hi, since you took the time to revert my edit on Talk:Tranny_chaser, I'd like to ask you to take a closer look at the content you restored, which seems to have been ignored for a while now. It's in clear violation on the Wikipedia policy of civility, and continues to spiral down. My edit was more of a tongue in cheek effort to get the parties involved to stop since I know most of them personally. I would love to move the discussion to another forum, where it can be more clear who is saying what (especially since those espousing the "tranny chasers are gay" line are nearly all anonymous) and which wouldn't take up so much room with name calling. One author has ignored my repeated requests to stop using the word "fag" (she even contrasted "fags" with "real men") and attacted me on the basis of my sexual orientation (because that is relevant...). I would love her to be banned but I would also love to come to some sort of agreement. Norm Coleman Page and Galloway[edit]

Hello MicahMN, I just wanted to let you know that I totally disagree with your assertion that Sen. Coleman "played a relatively small role in the grand scheme of things" related to his subcommittee's and staff's continued and politically-motivated pursuit of antiwar British MP George Galloway. It is his subcommittee. And if he can't get the subcommittee to go along, he'll get his Republican majority staff alone to do it. This is shown by the second report against Galloway, unlike the first it is by the majority staff only. This is the same majority staff that has been spinning the Wiki Coleman article itself recently. I think his chief of staff was involved in that, read the articles on it. All this does not happen IMO, certainly the expansive and bamboozling second report doesn't, without Coleman's involvement. It is a scandalous use of government personnel.

You imply that you consider the section low quality, I say the recent news about his staff getting in there to spin it (note: NOT correct it) tips us off that something has been done right. I do not know what your motives are, but you seem to prefer a Coleman-friendly article. Last year, more than once and without consensus, you deleted and displaced the section for inevitable later deletion. If, as you are implying you might, you summarily displace or delete this section again, as you did last year, I will resist that. Feel free to let me know if you disagree and why. I just wanted to comment on your overreaction on edits on the Norm Coleman article. [4]

My edit[5] that you angrily reverted was minor and was not the "removal of coleman's anti-abortion position" as you falsely claimed. If you bothered to read the rest of the surrounding paragraph you would see that not only did my edit remove a redundant statement, but the entire paragraph already serves to define Coleman's position. Your false claim would only be true if I had deleted the entire paragraph and called it a minor edit, both of which I would never do.

The "article" is horribly written and contains no source... the closest thing I can find to a "source" on the intarweb is this gem (notice how freely I use "gem" ... that said, the image on this page is cool, if a bit anachronistic and somewhat unrelated...). At last a wikipedia editor we can actually leave a message for. Is Wikipedia run by DMOZ editors? As the success I've had in adding anything to wikipedia seems about as good as getting into DMOZ' own club, hence my addition to 'W**kers' on wikipedia. I am sorry but this is born out of frustration. Basically it seems absolutely fine for some commercial sites to be added to wikipedia (Err...ipod lounge 200k members, I can't imagine the site owner is paying for that kind of bandwidth as a hobby) yet not others. Wikipedia should either set rules for all or rules for none. And no before you ask I run no sites related to ipods!!! Search the forums guys, wikipedia is becoming the polices police, why bother spending my time contributing for every editor to disagree and class me as commercial, my breast cancer info site was deleted as 'commercial' yet featured not a single ad, affiliate program or adsense ad. I really do hope that the said editor sleeps well at night with the money he makes from his wikipedia (ADSENSE!) site. Hope he sleeps real well as does my wife who's 6ft under. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

hit counter[edit]

Hi Micahmn,

I noticed that you have a very good knowledge of how to use Wikipedia as well as the MediaWiki and I was wondering if you could help me out.

I have been working on the Water supply and sanitation by country notes with other professionals in the field. As we understand, Wikipedia turns off hit counters so as not to slow down their servers. However, we have also seen that hit counters can be used on MediaWiki software. Are you aware of any way that hit counters might be included on those pages? Or, if they can be turned on selectively?

Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Just noticed your template "Clean and Blue" on this page: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_user_styles

I really like your style sheet & want to use it for my wiki. Great work.

However, I can't seem to find the monobook.css file location in the Wikipedia directories. Where is it? And is that the only change I need to make it live? It looks that I can switch the setting $wgDefaultSkin in LocalSettings.php to switch out to one of the default skins, but for yours, am I just copying in the monobook.css to whereever it belongs?
