UnblockAre you having problems with editing? I noticed you added then removed the unblock template; your blocklog doesn't show any blocks, but it could be a block of the underlying IP. hey ViolinGirlJust saying 'Hey'. I, too, love Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. I also love Aaron Copland and Stravinsky and the Beatles, and Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan and many others. I play upright bass (bluegrass), guitar (folk and started learning classical long ago), and some banjo (bluegrass - Scruggs and melodic three finger picking). I love Wikipedia. It was so good to hear that you placed well in the competition last Saturday. I mean, really! I couldn't stop smiling as I read those last two v.com posts. For some reason, it made my day. That day was fun for me, as well--I had a competition of my own last Saturday (math, haha). And still, I need to apologize for having taken still another week to write back. Oh, but more importantly, you're playing the Siciliano tomorrow! *grin* Of course, I'll make sure to send a request to a Friend for a smooth performance (and more reliable strings). Anyway, it's high time I replied (and hopefully I haven't completely forgotten the way of the wiki)...
Yes! ^_^ After a good number of phone calls and discussed decisions, I've begun studying with Lee Joiner for a few weeks now (hmm... link, link... there we go!). I've really been loving the lessons, and he's just a great teacher. Without fail, we always go past the hour-lesson mark, since there's simply so much to cover. And getting private lessons has changed my life, busy-wise--but more on that later. As a sample of his style, one of the ways he suggested practicing the violin arrangement of the Rachmaninoff Vocalise was--to my delight--to actually sing the part (to understand the phrasing as it was originally meant). *thrilled*
Well, I certainly have gotten into a good share of bad habits, and I'm sure there are more that I just haven't been told about yet XD. Bowhold, "chin-hold," shifting movements, hand shape, you name it! I actually find it pretty exciting ^^. Oh, and Mrs. Collins--did I ever mention that I had her as my private instructor at the String Workshop maybe four years ago? I still remember her teaching me things like "the Itzhak Perlman way to start a piece." XD
Oh yes, your quotes of "SLOW DOWN!!" sound very familiar ^_^. Of course, you can't help but appreciate when your parents decide to impart to you all of their carefully-discovered driving secrets, ranging from some pretty hilarious gas-preservation techniques to my mom's introducing the concept of people who turn on their headlights in the middle of the day as a way to "warn" other drivers that there's a cop nearby. Now that was interesting.
Amen ^^. I recently did a little search in the college and public libraries for "Christian Hedonism" only to find that, well, even using Google Book Search, the concept isn't known by that name to many. ^^ The article does seem like it'll require some innovation to jump into; after all, "Christian Hedonism is a liberating and devastating doctrine" (How to Fight for Joy). Will be looking forward for opportunities to build on it nonetheless.
Music! I have been reading Extreme Calling and that, among other things, have been seriously been challenging my own standards in the music world, which have unfortunately been taking a turn from the perfect in the past several years. There is so much to ponder!--even Piper's standards call for some deep thinking, with the way music works with our satisfaction in the Lord. Does he mention that in any of his books? And I did hear about Bruce Wilkinson's work in Africa... *sigh* Indeed. So much that can be discussed, but... time isn't exactly on my side right now ><.
I think I know what you mean XD. Last year, I was surprised to find out that all of the kids were ages 4-7 (instead of ~6-12 as I had been expecting). Definitely a big difference, and like you said, an interesting experience. To be honest, I think I survived a bit better psychologically than did Victoria (mostly because I had a milder group of kids while hers were astoundingly... turbulent); though, I seemed to have caught a few health-related side effects from the week ^_^. One can get pretty hoarse with so many kids under their wing! *laughs*
And rightly so! :D Happily for me, I did make good on my declaration to copy your poetic posts into a file, and thus will be writing some thoughts on "From the snowy mountain" before long. I hope you'll forgive me for that. ^^ Ah, poetry! *happy sigh*
Victoria's work with Daily Success included a few things, as far as I've come to understand it. Mainly, it was HTML-izing the Daily Success emails, which would come from Mr. Gothard, then go to her boss(es), and then to her. She and her coworker would also need to "put 'em live," basically just uploading the latest email and making sure that it would get sent out to the right people. During the course of the year while the DS emails were being written, it sometimes looked like pretty intense work, since Mr. Gothard might not get it finished until later in the day, and then it would need to go through a couple other people before she or whoever else was doing the uploading could do the final formatting touches and send it out. Good thing Victoria's a tough person ^_^. And ah yes, Dairy Success. I happened to very subtly spoof/reference DS as well in a poem somewhere, truth be told... *acts mysterious* Whew! Hope the quotes from my talk page worked well, since it was a long time ago when you wrote those ^^. Anyway, as I promised above to mention later, I'll give an update on how my life has been lately before I run off. Violinistically: Lessons have, as I said, changed everything. I guess when you have a couple of pieces to work on (I think this will be the first time that I have actual solo pieces prepared for the SW audition), Kreutzer, scales, and a million bad habits, and you toss on one, two, three orchestras, you begin to wonder if you should have thought through your schedule a bit more thoroughly before saying "yes" so quickly. XD If you read Victoria's latest blog entry, you'll also be introduced to one of my latest passions--improvisation. That last thing also raises concerns about music standards, though... *lost in thought* Everything else: Well, I think the other things will start relaxing a bit now that... *laughs* that I've written this, finally. Like how you mentioned "forcing myself to neglect replying to e-mails and miscellaneous comments in cyberspace" at v.com, I've been similarly making sure that I write here before doing anything else ^_^. It's just been too long! Next on "the list" is, well, poetry, definitely (including one I wrote several weeks ago for Sango's collection but never finished the last third of), "internet correspondence," and, dutifully, academia. These next couple weeks I'll really be flying around (a couple orchestra performances, a couple auditions to work towards, SAT's on Saturday, etc), so your prayers are very much appreciated, as always. Just the other day I was sitting there and thinking, "Wow. somebody's praying for me right now, I just know it." ^^ Thanks so much for reading, and God bless! That article on Friedrich Seitz was mostly written by other people; I only happened to notice that both articles existed (both showed up on a search). I have created one article, List of composers by nationality, in an attempt to consolidate some of the shorter lists for individual countries, namely Ireland, Spain, and Bulgaria. Part of me also thinks that, because categories exist for these already, if any of these lists are useful at all, or if they are simply restating the same information. What do you think?
