How to

[edit]

Hi Vmd921, you posted the following message on my talk page:

As noticed by other comments Gwernol is very particular. After reading his Wiki articles I have notice a writing style that is very different in nature, possibly from a technical stand point.. If this format and writing style is the protocol to use for article submission. I propose it will be wise if Gwernol writes a how to article on how to write and edit like him. This should save time for many of us in the long run. I have concerns as a new member that as soon as I write a article it may be deleted if not to his liking. Gwernol if you have this much power over Wiki users than maybe you need to educate us also on what you like and don’t like so we may step in line. I say this in respect, I feel why even try to participate when as a contributor you cant win. In addition could you please be not so quick to ban new users. Give us some time to get used to this. Constructive criticism may be better that two warnings and then banned. Kind regards vmd921

You are mistaken if you think I advocate a particular "writing style" of my own. Wikipedia has a few core policies and a set of guidelines that all editors are expected to follow. You can find the core policies at WP:5P. If you follow those you won't go far wrong. If you are interested in issues of writing style, the best place to start is the manual of style: WP:MOS. Like other editors and administrators here I only ask that you follow the rules laid down by the general Wikipedia community, not anything that is specific to me.

The only "power" I have is the power of persuasion and a few additional administrator tools that the community granted me use of. Its unfair of you to suggest that "as a contributor you can't win". There are hundreds of thousands of contributors here editing nearly 3 million articles consisting of nearly 1 billion words of text. It is clear that the vast majority of those who contribute here do so in a productive and positive manner. If you can give me an example of a situation where you think I have banned (or to use the correct terminology blocked) a new user too hastily, I am happy to review that case. If you want to complain about my actions you are also welcome to go through our procedures for dispute resolution. I would ask that you not make vague allegations against me but instead put forward specific examples where you feel I have acted incorrectly. I assure you I do make mistakes like anyone and am quite open to correcting them if pointed out to me. Thanks, Gwernol 19:08, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
