Edit conflict in Aretxabaleta

Hi Vmenkov,

I saw you undid my change in Aretxabaleta, and of course I don't quite agree with your move. Aretxabaleta is a Basque name, and as such it is written in that language's rules. In Spain, even if in Spanish it should be written Arechavaleta (upon which I agree), Aretxabaleta is the sole official name, and the only one used everywhere. The fact that in Spanish it is Arechavaleta has the same relevance as the fact that in Russian it is written Аречавалета, which in the article has absolutely no relevance. I agree that Aretxabaleta is the only official spelling since 1979-81, but, due to the obvious political factors, the Spanish spelling, Arechavaleta, did have a greater international currency (in English, as well) until then. Accordingly, I moved the Spanish spelling from the lead to a special (sourced) section discussing the history of the name spelling. Hope you're OK with that. P.S. Just saw your user page. So you are from Aretxabaleta! A lovely place. I only spent a few hours in Aretxabaleta and Arrasate/Mondragon a few years ago, but I felt somehow that this is the most "authentically Basque" area along my entire route from Vitoria-Gasteiz to S.Sebastian/Donastia. Chingachgook

How exactly was there a loss of content? Besides an actor or two I thought were already in the main article, the only other content not merged over was original research. TTN (talk) 15:16, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

At the very least, there were interwikis and an illustration (a fair-use image, illustrating Chingachgook's becoming the main character of the German movie - something that may or may not be used under fair use in other articles). Other than that - I agree that there was not all that much sourced material there. Nonetheless, between there being 1433 hits for the name just on Google Books, and the fact that the name obviously had plenty of recognition (with things from a warship to a scout camp named after this character), I feel that there is plenty of space for anyone with an interest in the matter to develop the article to a decent shape. I don't have that much knowledge on or interest in the subject - it must have gotten on my watchlist because I put the image into it, years ago - but I just hope that someone else does... Strait of Anian

If you have a map, I guess so. My source was Samuel Elliot Morrison, The European Discovery of America. He has the east end of the strait near Baffin Island and moving west as exploration continued. Looking more closely, he has a note and bibliography and says that 'the Russians were working on it in the eighteenth century'. He also has a map by George Best from 1578 with the Strait of Anian at the Bering Strait connected to the Atlantic by a Frobisher Strait cutting across the middle of Canada. The suprising accuracy of these two maps almost hints at some, possibly Chinese, knowledge. I wonder what Gavin Menzies would think. Benjamin Trovato (talk) 02:16, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

As I understand, the location of the Strait of Anian varied a lot from one cartographer to another, since, after all, no one had actually seen it. So I won't be surprised if one map placed it near the real Berging Strait, while another routed it from San Diego, California to Iqaluit, Nunavut... Vmenkov (talk) 02:20, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

As you've done plenty more work on this article than I've done, you probably are better qualified to choose best images to illustrate the article, and I won't object to whatever you may decide to replace this picture with. There are quite a few images to choose from in the Commons category, commons:Category:Ferdinando_II_de'_Medici,_Grand_Duke_of_Tuscany. I reckon, though, that the article (thanks to your efforts) is now big enough to contain more than one image - and while the portrait of his wife would of course be relevant, she has her article already...

To be honest, I have been "pushing" the picture of the plaque mostly because I've been somewhat puzzled by it - what did Ferdinand and his Mom the Regent do in 1627 that it had to be described in both Latin and Hebrew? Maybe someone will explain the mystery (and if that event ever gets described in the article, then the picture could legitimately stay there :-) Vmenkov (talk) 14:35, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Bringing order to the articles about Russian railway stations/terminals is something I've been eyeballing for the past several years and never found time to get involved with. Of course I'll be more than happy to assist in whatever way I can, if you need help.

I have posted a comment to your proposal. May I suggest you also move it to where it would be more visible for people to comment on and extend the scope of the proposal to include Wikipedia's naming convention for Russian stations/terminals, and not just the Commons? Unfortunately, I have no particular knowledge of the language - all I wrote on it was simply the summary of what was in a couple of library books. I don't even speak much standard Chinese, after all! You may perhaps be better off asking somebody who contributed to the corresponding article in the Russian wiki... (One could of course simply "transacribe" the above pinyin into Dungan Cyrilic, but it will be a "fake", and not anything like what a real person from Kyrgyzstan would write, since the correspondence is not exactly 1-to-1) Vmenkov (talk) 15:15, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

I personally believe that it would still be intelligible to some extent with "real" Dungan.

Besides, you know Dungan vocabulary and grammar more clearly than I do and can also read Cyrillic to an expert level.
