Guillermo Vilas[edit]

Hi. I noticed you changed Vilas' match wins at the French Open from 56 to 58, noting that the "ATP site doesn't recognize Vilas' two wins in 1972." Just to be sure, I actually calculated Vilas' wins from every single French Open tournament from 1972–89 and placed it into a table:

Year Match wins
1972 2
1973 2
1974 2
1975 6
1976 4
1977 7
1978 6
1979 4
1980 3 1 walkover
1981 3
1982 6
1983 4
1984 0
1985 1
1986 4
1987 1
1988 1
1989 0
Total 56

It looks like the ATP site does include his 2 wins from 1972 (as that was the year that the organization was created). I think the one source of confusion is the one walkover Vilas got in 1980 4R. He ended up losing in the QF, but only got 3 wins instead of the usual 4. As a result, I have changed Vilas' French Open match wins to 56. Cheers! —Bloom6132 (talk) 14:51, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

_______ 1 Faulk 7-5 6-3 6-4; 2 Warwick 6-3 6-0 6-0; 3 Hewitt 0-6 8-6 8-6 2-6 6-2; 4 Baranyi 3-6 6-2 5-7 8-6 6-3; 5 Solomon 6-3 10-8 2-6 4-6 4-6

This is Vilas' road at Roland Garros '72. First two rounds aren't qualifying rounds. Faulk was a qualifier, he beat in qualies: Jean-Roger CADOT (FRA) 6-4 6-4 Sergio PALMIERI (ITA) 7-5 6-4 Alan HASWELL (AUS) 9-7 7-9 6-3 7-5

I've got copied all scorelines of the Open era from ITF website which is a more reliable source than ATP in terms of GS tournaments. Voo de Mar (talk) 18:33, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for informing me of this. The only problem is that even the Roland Garros website itself credits Vilas with only 56 wins (as seen from the source provided in the article). I guess we'll have to change WP 1972 French Open drawsheet itself, as it only lists Vilas' wins starting from Hewitt. The article also completely ignores the first two rounds that you pointed out and designates Vilas' win against Hewitt as being the "First Round." —Bloom6132 (talk) 19:40, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that major tournaments in the 70s were in mess (five rounds in Paris 1972, several players had 'bye' in the first two rounds, something which hasn't happened for years in men's tennis anywhere), but there are errors on ATP website which aren't connected to them... If you want I can send you a mail with all scorelines of the Roland Garros 1972, so you will see how ridiculous the draw was at the time

Voo de Mar (talk) 19:56, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mailing the scorelines won't be necessary. I believe you. I was just wondering: are the scorelines available online (i.e. on a website or database)? Because that could be the only source that proves Vilas has 58 French Open match wins. I've tried to find other sources but they all state he has 56, most notably the Roland Garros 2012 website. Bloom6132 (talk) 10:05, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I asked you because the ITF website has recently changed its layout and I'm afraid it's impossible to look at all Grand Slam scorelines in the way as they had appeared before that change. Or maybe it's a matter of a browser. I can't do it on the Opera despite proper links to the entire draws are included in players' activities. Nevertheless you can check here (http://www.itftennis.com/procircuit/players/player/profile.aspx?PlayerID=10001449) the year 1972 to find out that at the Roland Garros 1972, Vilas won 4 matches not 2 which obviously makes 58 not 56 as is untruly repeated as other stuff like "the most matches won in a row" (supposedly 46 by Vilas whilst in my opinion it's Borg's 49 etc.)

Voo de Mar (talk) 21:44, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The scorelines are visible on Safari. And yes, they confirm the fact that there was a R256 and R128 at Roland Garros 1972; both matches showing that Vilas won. I'll now add the source to Vilas' page and change the record to 58. Thanks for giving me the source. Much appreciated! Cheers. —Bloom6132 (talk) 19:29, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
