MyDNS[edit]

on 9 Feb 2010 i created pages for MyDNS and MyDNS-NG during my search for DNS tools. These were among my first contributions to Wikipedia so i did not appreciate how strict the content rules were. The copyright bot found that i had pasted text from the articles i had found on the web about these old tools.

2nd try for MyDNS[edit]

In June, 2011 i tried again. Both pages were deleted again, but now with some feedback:

I would encourage you to read Wikipedia's notability guidelines - esp for web stuff WP:WEB. You must display some criteria for notability by a 3rd party. Your article did not seem to meet that criteria, which is why I tagged it for speedy deletion.

and from the other reviewer

I could not find your e-mail address on your wikipedia page. **FIXED**
Despite having had MyDNS and MyDNS-NG deleted in 2010, you apparently have not learned the importance of reliable sources. Given a total absence of links to significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources, are you surprised we deleted the articles? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 22:29, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you don't mind helping me along the learning curve .. I have read your comment on my talk page about the references I supplied not being acceptable. What I do not get is how high the bar is set. I referenced the permalink URLs of the news articles I cited, the technology surveys and lists of DNS server solutions that mention MyDNS, and the corporation info from the Better Business Bureau of Chicago. *1* What better citations would you want?

since posting this i have found the text of the 2 articles in my e-mail (thanks!) and indeed some of my citations appear to have gone missing .. probably due to properly closing an edit session. So I have some work to do. — vulcan_ (talk · contribs) 13:33, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The contrast between my pages and the WP pages for the other DNS Server projects I see existing pages with very similar content to mine .. have standards been raised since OpenNIC and OpenDNS were written? My I draw your attention to the German version of MyDNS is a rather crude translation of the blurb on the MyDNS home page with no citations and only a couple of links to the projects' home pages.

Would it have been more acceptable if I labeled them as stubs? VulcanWikiEdit (talk) 07:23, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly I am being dim but I cannot see any of the refs you claim at *1* above to have provided. Can you give me just one example? Yes, standards have been raised and labelling them as stubs would make no difference. If you can actually demonstrate notability, create a properly referenced draft in user:VulcanWikiEdit/sandbox describing both products (if they are accepted a redirect will be used on the other title) and raise the matter at deletion review. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 09:31, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Third try at MyDNS[edit]

New versions of these pages are in the works, MyDNS and MyDNS-NGvulcan_ (talk · contribs) 13:33, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Stuff that Wikipedia considers reliable sources.[edit]

To find reliable sources look for books, newspaper articles, magazine articles, or web sites that have editors like a magazine does. Avoid things like Twitter, personal blogs, and internet forums. (That's just my rough summary of what I look for when I'm writing. The official page on sources is at WP:RELY.) Hope that helps. Cloveapple (talk) 17:06, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your signature has been broken by a software change – how to fix it[edit]

I noticed, for example here, that your signature has been broken by a recent change in the wiki software:

Wikilinks starting with two colons don't work anymore, see Tech News: 2017-41.

To fix this, you need to go to the signature section of your Preferences, and remove at least the first colon in [[::User (I suggest you remove both initial colons, as well as the initial colon both in [[:User talk and [[:Special, as these colons are not needed).

Until you do this, it's possible you won't be able to "ping" other users on talk pages, as an effect of the userpage link in your signature being broken.

I hope this helps. --Pipetricker (talk) 10:59, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Tips for additional cleanup of your signature[edit]

Your signature contains the following piece of code: <span class="plainlinks">, and the corresponding end tag </span>.

You may want to remove those from the signature, as they serve no purpose and only make the signature more complicated.

You may also want to replace the code for a non-breaking space, &nbsp;, with a regular space character, so lines may wrap at that point in the signature. --Pipetricker (talk) 14:59, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the suggestion, but i do not use that code in my signature .. there is no span
i will change some of the NBSPs to blanks
